mine... friendly, a bit silly, understated and trying to be nice and smiley http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/2226/smileis1.gif

i just picked something randomly really, that was different then what i have in the GM forum, though i am tempted just to use that one as well...

what precisely qualifies as a crappy avatar anyway? what you think sucks someone else may think kicks ass. 'sides if someone has an avatar you don't think fits, its your problem, just have to get used to a new insight on the poster won't ya? ;)

*waits for time when i don't listen to advice of own avatar*
I love your avatars. I especially like the way PM's is basically a sugarcoated way of giving us the finger.

Not a fan of GURPS, even though two of my friends have written sourcebooks.Really? Who are they? Most probably I have the books and there's a good chance I know them since I'm one of the gazillions of MIB :)

I used to argue with people who doesn't like GURPS - when I was yound and hot blooded that is. Now, I can even be persuaded to host 2nd edition games if the PC's are persistent enough - but that's because gaming is a social experience not because I like the system least bit.

I know the fellows who wrote GURPS Autoduel -- they also wrote a number of articles and stories for Steve Jackson's AutoDuel Quarterly a million years ago -- Rob Garitta and Chris Burke. Met them in college, and we still see each other on a fairly regular basis.

I thought they'd worked on other books as well, but it seems I was incorrect. I think they did some playtesting as well.

I also wrote a couple of short stories for ADQ waaaaaaaaaay back.

Er... I've had it a long, LONG time....

I remember the one before, she was cute too. More classical manga, with the ears that wiggled.

Avatars are great, better than names to remember who is who.

We are duly grateful to Jolt or Max or whoever decided we could have them. Personally, I'm glad ordinary users can't have animated avatars, too many would choose ones that flashed or had a huge long cycle. Visual pollution, like a screenful of popup ads.

Since the line is not very well supported (as far as I can tell, I may be wrong) anymore, I'm not thinking about ordering them either but I may someday when I have all the bits and pieces I want (: Did those short stories got published? Pyramid maybe?

Hear, hear! I love it when developers upgrade a system / setting when it is full to the brim with new and improved information compared to what you had when the edition first came out but to upgrade 3.0 to 3.5 to 4.0? Well, the upgrade doesn't seem to include and incorporate new ideas from supplements and make them work seamlessly and in a balanced manner - it is a completely new system that looks like the old but feels like "dungeons and template forced unbalanced skills based leveling dragons" (:

Anyways, sorry for the off topic and game system bashing (:

Katganistan, you avatar was an issue of interest long before we were given the avatars (: I have it both on my office and home PC's ;) I don't think it can be related to your apparent personality here at Jolt (as far as I can tell, of course, I'm fairly new here) but it surely gives you an air of congeniality :D

WHAT avatars? i'm not seeing any HERE. just about every place else i go i see and have them. is there something to chainge in personal preferances to see them? or is this just a discussion of avatars in general, wherever they might happen to appear and be used?

i guess you could say each nation's flag is a kind of avatar. i think that's how the (whatever) "bb/forum" (system this is) engine sees them. is THAT what's being refered to?

kati's makes me want to hug it a squeze it and get all scratched up. i guess i'd better not go to any anime cons.

as for junii, whell, that one reminds me of a teacher i had in grade school, 50 years ago, and she was 60 then. which is totally unlike all the other junii ones i've seen.

there seems to be a junii on every other forum i'm on too, other then trainz classics. or wait, no, on hips there's another name, but with the same me picture in their gallary as another one where she does go by junii. (that one's a furry/ninja/d.j.) i'm guessing the junii here might be someone else. but only might be.

i can hardly wait to see those of the others in my region.

You put the "Cat with praying paws" in your sig. You didn't see it there ... because you had sigs turned off ... so put it at the end of each post, assuming the "sig" thing hadn't worked.

Funny enough, when Hunter was released, I met a good number of friends on the WW boards -- we started doing a cross-game RP there and GOT THROWN OFF -- not for breaking rules per se, but because apparently you couldn't have an RP as a vampire on the Hunter board, regardless of the fact that we were in an RP with hunters.

That led to us getting annoyed and starting our own board, UDG, (ultimate diceless gameroom) where we RPd to our hearts content for two years -- when the site owner became too busy with work to maintain it, we went to EzBoard and created "Players of Darkness", and though I haven't been involved in some time, that board still exists (in much diminished form) on yuku.com. Funny enough, one of the Players of Darkness members turned me onto NationStates and, well..... ;)

:) So don't feel embarassed about playing WW games (though I admit, I never LARPed, myself).

<snip> (though I admit, I never LARPed, myself).Oh, it is a very good experience if you can find yourself a well managed, well written LARP where people can afford good costumes or designed so that you don't need expensive costumes. The only thing one should look out for is if the group is making a big ad campaign about how "the rules are not necessary, this is the ultimate roleplaying experience" or not :) If they are, you're probably in for a powerplay session with an "inner angst" disguise (I remember the Phoenix (one of the GM's) coming into the room where a powerful fire sorceress, a demon and a fire elemental was about to strike a deal that would end the game in a "blaze of glory" so to speak and saying that "I throw a fireball at you, you're dead" since the LARP was running an hour long than expected). If they know what the rules are for and are professional about it, you really can enjoy yourself for a few hours.

Costumes -- not a problem. I'm a former SCAdian and a Rennie Rat, and in college my friends and I liked trying to top each other on making superhero costumes that didn't look like you only spent $30 (or in some cases, MUCH less) to pull it together.

I've seen some very very VERY bad LARPing at conventions and I think it's turned me off the idea -- though I do TT with props a lot.

It's funny how avatars do that, and although I look little like Ivor Cutler or my avatar, I do like the image it portrays. Euroslavia mentioned earlier in the thread about how many posters presume on the back of his avatar (a picture of a girl) that he is female. I confess I made the same assumption. But that isn't really strange; we're very visual creatures, and (those of us who can see) rely a huge amount on the appearance of others to form beliefs about them.

There's a wee biography here (http://www.ivorcutler.org/content/view/62/1/), and there's at least one TV program in existence about him and his life, though they will probably only have been broadcast in the UK.

I'd highly recommend his albums of songs, poetry and general Cutler ace-ness, especially Jammy Smears and Dandruff.

i fuse pokemon sprites (and am a member of the pfn, a club on newgrounds thats 'the pokemon fusionists of newgrounds') those are some of my favorites that were small enough to allow me to include more than one
theres plenty more ive done, and in fact, those are some of the worst of my favorites :s
---
brief history of the pfn (http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/735575/1): although on newgrounds there is a 'clubs and crews' section it was never meant to be a club, it was originally posted in the 'art' section where the op (and now leader) would take requests and make pokemon fusions
over time others joined in and made pokemon fusions as well, and eventually a club was formed of it, i saw the thread back when it was much smaller and had been fascinated by the fusions - only having ms paint im limited to what i can do in it, and not having a tablet and sucking at drawing im even more limited - however i am fairly good in paint at using the spraycan to draw or using sprites to make fusions - no where as good as many of the other members of the pfn, but good enough
a while ago i was bored and had been meaning to try my hand at pokemon fusions, i hadnt seen the thread in ages but decided to try - it worked out great but ng (abbrv for newgrounds) only allows pictures that are gifs or jpeg to be uploaded
i didnt have the foresight to save my original pictures as .png and either convert it using an online converter or just post a jpeg raped version while keeping the png version
after a while of improvement i decided to take a chance and post in the thread, i wasnt looking to join, just for feedback - i got the feedback and it was mainly positive, so i continued to post there and overtime without my asking the leader made me a member of the pfn (they also wanted to give me a title, something older members usually get - but i declined because a friend who had been there much longer did not (and still doesnt) have a title)

I think I've finally settled on an avatar for good, after changing it four or five times. There are so many images that represent "me" in different ways on NSG, it was hard to decide which route to go--political (West Wing), geographical (East Bay), poetic (Mayakovsky)?

Then I was looking randomly through the pictures on my computer and found this one, and I think it suits me pretty well. Naked picture to anyone who knows what it is. ^_^

Which software is that? And would it happen to be freeware, by any luck?

I am. I've been looking for a proggy to make planets for quite a while. Never found a good and free one. Can you help?

Not to worry - some people have more posts per page enabled. On my screen, your post ain't the last one. ;)

I read Moomin books as a kid, I still read them as an adult, and it was the only avatar-sized picture I had on my pc.

Actually... it's a prosecutor from a game series I enjoy (Gyakuten Saiben). There's three characters who all dress like they've stepped out of another era.

Is that the game being picked on here (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=262)?

Yeah, there's a free program called "Celestia". That's the program in my avatar. And it is entirely freeware! :D

you can download it here (http://shatters.net/celestia/download.html). I also have a link to it in my sig. :) Be sure to check for updates once in a while. Now, here's the catch: you gotta manually type out the parameters for planets and stars in a writing program, such as notepad and wordpad (in windows, anyway), and also draw the map for the planet in a paint program. However, a few people on the celestia forum (http://shatters.net/forum) may be able to point you to some free programs that do the writing for you. :) As for drawing maps for the planets, there's a program called "lunarcell" (http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Misc__Graphics_Tools/LunarCell.html) that plugs into adobe photoshop that may be able to draw maps for you. (I haven't tried it myself, so I really don't know for sure.) Unfortunately, it's shareware, but you might be able to download it for free from the site I linked to.

And thanks for the optimism!

My avatar is actually quite simple, it's a symbol for chaos. -snip-

First time I saw it I thought it had something to do with Hank Jr. haha

I did notice the head was facing a different direction than his tho. I never new that symbol was of/for anything. I figured he made it up.

Hooray! You honestly wouldn't believe how long I've been looking for something like it. Years! (Dreaming of it for decades!)

Wow. Thank you for the links provided, I've already checked them out. I have quite a few picure-maps I wanted to turn into a planet but didn't have the proggy. And the numbers...? Well, I'll figure it out, I'm sure.

Since I don't have Adobe Photoshop installed, that's not much of a problem.

So, thank you again! :hail:

(Nice avatar, btw.! Did you make that yourself? :p:rolleyes::)

And thanks for the optimism!
