I was wondering, me being a Spaniard and all, what´s the popular opinion here on NSG when it comes to my countrymen (those of you who have spent time in Spain or know Spanish people)? Does anyone here think we´re really that rude?

I've heard pretty horrible things about Spaniards. The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is that they use a lot of racial slurs pretty openly, not because they're racist but because "they don't know any better."

I think the rude ones of Europe are the French. The way they treat people that don't speak their language is a bit screwed up from what I have seen. Spanish in my experience have been friendly. I have been all through Spain and never remember any particular rude behavior. Going to Malaga in August for a few days. In fact I would say that most of the Southern European countries are decent.

You have to remember that technologically, the Moors were more advanced at the time. That was mainly their advantage for 800 years against the Spaniards, plus the fact that we weren´t a united nation at the time. That started in the late 1400s with Queen Isabella and King Fernando.
And yes, Southern Spain and Morocco, or the rest of the Arab countries are very similar in the people that live there.

Here is the difference between Spain and France.
In Spain they realize that visiting Spain for about 1 week I am not likely to learn perfect Spanish, and they tolerate my broke Spanish or switch to broke english as the situation requires. Also they realize that I being an American I am likely to speak Spanish with a Mexican accent since thats the only people i can practice with here. The French utterly refused to speak with me unless I spoke perfect French and heaven forbid my French reek of French Canadian accent.

well when I've been there they refuse to communicate in English or French, got so bad i went to the catholic church just so i could speak in Latin with the priest.
though I hear southern France is actually much more friendly.

Chinese because I work at a Chinese restaurant and i wanted to learn how to yell back at the boss.

I don't recall finding any of the Spanish people I have met in the slightest bit rude. I have met more people from Portugal, than Spaniards, and everyone single one of them has been really likeable.
The rudest people I have come across are from Yorkshire and from Norway - but in both cases this might just be a cultural thing in the way they try and speak English.

I don't know about rudeness... the common stereotype about Spaniards (coinciding with personal obeservances) is that they have this tendency to just stop in their tracks no matter where to have a chat or stare at something, entirely oblivious to the nuisance they are presenting to anyone trying to get past them.
I've noticed groups of them getting off full busses at the end of the line, and just stopping once their feet touch the ground for a chat among themselves, while others trying to get off the bus simply can't. Eventually, an enraged busdriver might yell at them, causing consternation and strange looks.
Also, they tend to walk as many abreast as the pavement will hold, and walk extremely slow.
Other than that, I had two Spanish housemates at different times, both of which turned out to be utter nutcases (both of them threatening me, one with a knife, the other just with words).
While I realise that this probably doesn't reflect the entire Spanish population, it has made me somewhat wary.

It is common. I gotta own to that. I remember that one time, when I was 16-17 this old man at a pub back home yelled at me in passing: Move that ass. I love it! I was horrified. But I became accustomed to it. It´s normal now, but in no way a good thing.

Well i honestly have no idea which part they came from, i didn't want to speak to them, they were pretty impolite.
However they totalled about 30 people who were tired i believe.
Another load who came in were also rude, but happy which was worse for me, but hey they're on holiday what do they care about me.
Now I wouldn't draw the conclusion all Spanish are rude because i haven't met them all. As you are Spanish and polite, this would infer my experiences have just been unlucky. Still some of them were hot so it's not all bad.;)
while i'm on the topic i found most American and Canadian customers to be the most polite we had, and generally very chatty and kind. Of course i can't draw the conclusion they are all like that, but i think it helps if you speak the same language to the destination you're going.
I don't mean that nasty like, but it's true. I also apologise for all those rude arrogant Brits who go abroad, they really get on my nerves, mind you most rude people do but maybe i've got a scewed sense of reality. who knows?

You tell them, Ris. These damn English gents!
A funny anecdote from a friend of mine. She was walking by the streets of Sevilla, holding a pretty expensive camera in her hand, (she's a photographer), and her handbag, and then suddenly she saw a pretty, small alley nearby. As she enters and takes a picture of a virgin painted over the wall, one man appears from the front as another one stands in the exit as to prevent her escape, (according to my friend, who yes, is a sucker for walking alone into a solitary alley in a foreign country, both men were perhaps the hotter pieces of ass she has ever, ever seen).
The man in front of her, moving slowly, without taking his glance from her eyes, (as she was inmobile as a rabbit flashed by a lightbeam), took the handbag from her shoulder, looked inside, took like 200-300 euros, (can't remember the exact amount), and gave her the bag back.
She put puppy eyes and tried to put her camera away, and then the man looked her in the eyes again, with a pair of amazing green orbs, and said smiling "No te preocupes, maja, que el arte no se le roba a nadie), (Don't worry, pretty, you don't steal art from noone), and left, letting her keep the camera.
According to her, it was the most polite assault she could ever imagined, and wished that here the muggers could learn a lesson or two from those handsome spanish ones. (According to me, she's a total idealistic idiot. However, after the last mugging attempt on me left me with several broken ribs, a swollen face and a week at the hospital, can't really disagree with her about the "courtesy" of the mugging).

That is sad and funny at the same time. Best way not to get assualted in a foreign country is do your best not to act and look like a tourist in major cities. I know it is difficult to do sometimes but damn people need to use common sense.

I, on the contrary, have had your same experience, with American tourists. English tourists for example, try to speak Spanish to us whereas Americans think we have to speak English to them at all times.
I would venture to guess that ten times as many Americans speak Spanish than Englishmen. As for some of my fellow Americans I see in Mexico for example (because I go there a lot) they try to speak Spanish a lot. I think it may just be perception on your part rather than a fact.
One thing I am rather surprised by in Europe and especially Southern Europe is how many people do not speak two languages fluently. With all those languages so close together it amazes me that people in Spain don't pick up French and vice versa. I was in Italy and had a hell of a time finding someone that spoke either French, English or conversational Spanish. I scratched my head a bit about it but realized that people are the same all over the world with regards to knowing a single language.

With Spain is more of people being more interested in picking up the regional dialects. My mother, for example, speaks Spanish, Asturian, Euskera and some Valenciá. People are more interested in keeping the dialects alive at all cost, than picking foreign languages.

I´m watching this video of a Brit in Asturias, saying that Spaniards aren´t very polite. I imagine that´s his experience. I was wondering, me being a Spaniard and all, what´s the popular opinion here on NSG when it comes to my countrymen (those of you who have spent time in Spain or know Spanish people)? Does anyone here think we´re really that rude?

I was in Spain for a few months last spring, and wouldn't call the Spaniards rude so much as blunt. I see 'rude' as trying to be gross or offensive, whereas in the general case of the Spanish I see them as not really trying to offend, but still have a bit more candor than people are generally used to.
That is, when you can actually get one to talk to you. I actually know Spanish pretty well, and even when I was speaking Spanish (in Castilla-Leon, so I know they spoke Castellano), they didn't really respond when I tried to simply be friendly. I don't know if the fact that I'm a blonde-haired, heavy set, blue eyed American had anything to do with it, though I was sometimes confused for being a German.

That´s odd. Leoneses tend to be so friendly. We Asturians call them cousins.
But of course, Leonés and Asturian are practically the same in the common dialect, or more the similar characteristics of both dialects. We Asturians, although not considered rude, can be somewhat stiff with foreigners. I try not to, in general, but some foreigners do get on my nerves. But yes, we can be too blunt in general, to point of perhaps, offending some sensibilities.

Después podemos pasar a chupitos más fuertes. Por lo de las tapas, pues un buen quesito manchego. sudadito o un cantímpalo salteado en vino. Vamos, o unas almejitas con limón o unos bollines. I would´t call the French uncivilized because they advocate prostitution. If I were to do that, I would have to call uncivilized a lot of nations like the US, India, Indonesia, Thailand, The Netherlands, Brazil amongst others. Just because prostitution isn´t frowned upon doesn´t make a nation uncivilized. The prude argument was superfluous.
