5th NS UK Meet Planning Thread (August 2007? Leicester? Curry?)

Yeah, I totally forgot until I saw Stalin's post in the other thread ;p

Anyway, planning. When? Where? Who?

So Far:

Time:
A weekend between the 28th of July and the 19th of August is preferred, I think. I think the 18th of August was the best of those. Those dates are so Erastide could come, and maybe TSI (I'll post on his blog telling him we're planning, so he can drop by if possible). Anyone local got any preferences?

Place:
Leicester is best for me (it's got pretty good transport, too, and it's not as far south as Londinivm), but that's negotiable to a point; I doubt I can be arsed to go further North than Nottingham (too grim/far to drive in a morning) or further West than Birmingham (if that). London's good for me, too, but further south is a PITA. Again, preferences?

What to do:
If in Leicester I reckon meet in pub then eat curry. Otherwise, pub then... Preferences and suggestions?

If anyone thinks I'm being crap tell me :p

I second the nomination of Leicester. All in favour say aye!

*chorus of "aye"s*

All against say nay!

*tumbleweed*

Motion passed. Woot! :p

Erm, yeah. Leicester's good for me. August 18th is also good for me. I think having it in London again is a bit unfair on the northerners (and Scots), so the Midlands (or maybe Yorkshire) is probably the best idea.

Eagle and Child oin Leyland, Lancs is your best bet.

Leyland is on the West Coast Mainline and is ideal. The Eagle is fantastic and Leyland is only 6 minutes from both Preston and Chorley by train (good nights out both).

Lancashire?

No :p

Seriously, it's a three hour drive for me, or >4 by train. Ain't happening.

Aug 18th is good as I am not working. Leicester is a stretch but I can make that, any further north is a no no really.

I remember quite liking York. I went to look at the university. But it is a long way away... Even Sheffield's 100 miles, I think that's the absolute maximum I can reasonably (be bothered) to do twice in a day.
Can't stay overnight; will probably need the money in September.

Yeah, they lumped the organisation onto someone who hates travelling. And I ain't organising a meet I'm not going to ;p

18th sounds fine, by the way. 25th is an absolute no-no. Leeds Festival and all.

Can I pretend like I'm coming again? I like being involved :p Actually, if it's Leicester I may be able to make it as long as it's a weekend, I'm in SE Asia through all of July to August 10th and after that I'm (hopefully) work experiencing in a hospital.

Also, to the guy who said about the Eagle and Child - fucking A mate, that pub's brilliant for skipping lessons at Runshaw :D

EDIT: Actually, the 18th's the only day I could make it, I've got Leeds Festival the week after. Busy Summer for me. Finally, again to Mr. Wiggles II - Preston and Chorley are not, repeat *not* good nights out. Manchester yes, Liverpool yes, Preston no.

I've not bumped this for ages, and I'm not letting you all forget!

A poll for wherabouts has been added. I'm sure you'll agree that it's fair and balanced.

Seriously, pick wherever. Only options I can reasonably get to are on it; if many people want an meeting Way Up North, in the Deep South or in Forn Parts then maybe someone can organise seperate meets there?

The date, unless many people wish otherwise, will be the 18th of August.

I know there are people interested in places in the Far North, but they're simply too far for me to reasonably travel there and back in a day. Even Sheffield's two hours each way, so I'd rather not go that far...
I put the "further north" option on the poll so that if there was enough interest a willing party could organise a meet way up there somewhere. Please, if you want to do that be my guest; don't think you'll be messing this one up.

But medics dont' count as real people since they gloat about being on holiday whilst other students are stuck doing exams. All I can say is that the counter gloating once their summer term started was enjoyable.

Huzzah! It's about two hours by train from Chester to Leicester, according to National Rail Enquiries (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/). And only about £27 which isn't too bad, considering...

Right, we've had a few votes from people I don't recognise... Do Venereal Complication, Arkstahl and Caprican Peoples fancy standing up and being counted? You guys new, new names, or just puppets? I'm going to be a steward at the Sidmouth folk festival during the first week or so of August... I don't know English geography that well, which place is closest?

Not that it matters really, I suppose... I'll be back in Scotland by the 18th.

Sidmouth in Devon? That's way out the other side to "Somewhere even further South". Closest to Oxford, I think, but even that looks a trek.

Pretty much just the Space Centre. And you need considerably more than half a day there to see everything.

If you particularly want to see the largest outdoor covered market in Europe, though, Leicester is the place to be.

Wo0t!

Double wo0t!

As I said above, the Space Centre and the market are the only things of interest in Leicester.

Actually...there's a Picasso exhibition on at the New Walk museum. Donated by one of the Attenboroughs. I forget which one. Might be interesting, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

The Jain Centre is pretty impressive.

I know just the place. Basically, I've been there enough for the staff to know me. :D

Probably will need to book: I'll do it a couple of weeks beforehand. What sort of times would people prefer? It's a bit of a way from the pub as well (ie. the other way from the station on the map I provided), but it's worth it. And at least it's near the station for those people requiring trains.

I would suggest that the ones on Belgrave Road like Bobbies are the place to go, though Halli on Granby Street is a good vegetarian southern indian food (and cheap). Taj Mahal is probably okay as a more post pub traditional curry house. The pizzas in the Criterion are okay.

Sorry, limited internet access (as in, forums are banned under my company's internet policy) (bastards).

I'm going to book it on Monday, for 6.30 Saturday, if that's ok with people. It's the Taj Mahal (as Rambhutan mentioned previously). It would have been Bobbies, but that place is entirely vegetarian and quite a way from the pub so I'm not sure quite how well that would go down with everyone. I't's just off London Road (check the map I posted earlier) - that's the road the station is on - but away from town, about 5 minutes walk from the afore-mentioned station.

I should be able to get online on Sunday, but that's possibly going to be the last time before next Saturday. I'll text you, CD, when I've booked the restaurant.

I went to Manchester the night before so I could get the train. Then, I discovered it was my friend's birthday, a fact I'd forgotten. However, I refused to openly declare this minor detail and, instead, made the pretense I'd come up especially for him. Then went drinking with him. Then got really high. I mean, I figured hey, he's got to get a train to Edinburgh the next morning so I should be alright, right? Erm, yeah. He woke up at 12 and charged straight out of the house - the last news was him being stuck at the Preston changeover - and me unconscious until 3. Probably still should have gone but, feeling like utter shit, I've just kind of lazed around and witnessed my home team really fuck up their season prospects via Sky Sports News. :(

I'm going to stop saying I'm coming to these things, then one day turn up unannounced and scare the crap out of you all. Possibly dressed as the Phantom of the Opera. I hope it's been great...Soooooorryyyyyyyyy...

What? No one else is back... I was on a slow train and it took me 2 hours to get back. I curse Stalin to death involving Thai Sweet Chilli Dipping Sauce and Condoms.

Bah, I'm off to bed, my legs are knackered and I'm tired. And probablt suffering from culture shock after my visit to Leicester.

It was today. Or yesterday now. I just got home.

It was good. People in possible order of arrival:

Me + Ruffy (>.>)
I V Stalin
Erastide and Tactical Grace
The Infinite Dunes
Ollieland

Some notable absences (>.>) including our pet government spy^H^Htatistician, The White Hats (clearly you don't get subversive organisations outside of London ¬_¬), but a good time was had by mostly all, I think.

First we met gradually in the pub, drank beer, cider, coffee, Coke (hastily "imported" by Dunes for Erastide - Pepsi clearly just isn't good enough), ate some very tasty banana bread made by Erastide, and giggled about condoms and chilli sauce, and then we had a very tasty Indian meal. Finally Dunes had to dash for his train and we left Tactical Grace feeling unwell in the restaurant's toilets (probably not too much booze, actually) with Erastide, and the last three of us wandered off to a pub with a cider and cheese sampling thing...

There shall be pics; I have some I'll upload tomorrow (now today), Erastide has some too.

Oh, and Erastide brought along an NS bible which had been signed by all the people at the Californian meet - replete with messages of gratitude to the author and how the book turned their lives around...

... Then we got our hands on it. We signed it... and then we vandalised it, complete with obligatory twirly moustache and goatee added to the mugshot of Maxx on the back cover. We did lots of other things, but I'm not sure whether we should let it be a surprise for Mr Barry or even if I should delete this post.

Dammit, we got out partied by the Brits again. When you guys meet it's "We got drunk at this bar then that bar and so-and-so ran up a flagpole and declared all of England in the name of Whatevertheirnationiscalled (deja vu, I actually sat here trying to come up with a fake nation name and just fucking couldn't...) and at least one or two people are left fending for their drunk stumbling selfs at the end.

We went for ice cream.

We need to up it a notch, dammit. Next meet I'm bringing tequila and half an ounce of the stickiest green I can find and we're not gonna stop getting messed up until we convince Mikitivity to joust someone, steed to be determined.

That'll show 'em.

lol! last time (was it last time?) in London, Gru puked all over the pub just before glitzi and i arrived. what can i say, brits like to drink :p

i still remember being in some of the more touristy coffeeshops in Amsterdam, reading the "menu"... my mate and i had a good laugh when it said something like "you can order alcoholic beverages at the bar, but be careful! fine weed and booze make a potent combination - don't drink and smoke unless you're experienced!"
we had a good laugh at that, cos pretty much every single night at uni was rounded off with a good smoke and a lot of beer. experienced my ass :p

Erastide may have nicked one of them.Two. She took both of the ones that referenced her. I almost slipped the third photo into the book at the end. Right where I'd written a similarly styled comment in the book. I think we really got carried away with defacing that book.

We didn't really get drunk. I only had about 3-4 pints the whole day. It was all fairly tame. We didn't even begin to contemplate running through the nearest museum/gallery completely starkers.

We went for ice cream. The effects of the sugar high should not be underestimated. Especially when combined with other binges of the drug variety. Sugar + Caffeine + Alcohol = Good_Time.

We need to up it a notch, dammit. Next meet I'm bringing tequila and half an ounce of the stickiest green I can find and we're not gonna stop getting messed up until we convince Mikitivity to joust someone, steed to be determined.

I don't know, she was the only one who had an 'adult beverage' at our meet.Pah. we had a tough time finding an alcoholic beveridge to suit her needs. It's a hard life. That meant I had to have shandy instead of proper beer later!
She did say the US meet was fairly sober. "It was in a restaurant", she protested, as if that were any kind of excuse.

You get told a series of statements and have to guess what 'thing' the statements are refering to. We got laptop in 5, chocolate in 4... there might have been a beer one, but it took us 12+ to get the question refering to Winnie the Poo.

Oh, Erastide had the Condoms and wipes because she was given them for free. I think the person wanted her to go somewhere, and thought the condoms and wipes would help to convince her to go.

Erastide (and TG, I think) has more; I was obviously being lackadaisical with my camera. There is a movie, but she also has a better one of those (and my camera seems to have stopped recording sound...) so little point uploading it anywhere really.

What did Ruffy's Question Game ask?

It was an American kids' 20-questions game about things like Europe and Winnie the Pooh :)

And why did Erastide bring all these wipes and condoms and stuff again?

I think she got them given to her at the station. Advertising a film or something.
That was her excuse, anyway.
