I know it came up, and a few people thought it was a good idea, but it's time to nail this thing down.

A few things (to be added to as details are agreed on):

WC Imperial Court is the host.
We will meet at noon on Saturday, August 25th.
Here is the tentative itinerary:

- Meet at Village Pizza (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=village+pizza&near=Philadelphia,+PA&fb=1&view=text&latlng=39960421,-75188778,12247828695150225691) around noonish. Hang out and shoot the shit for a couple hours, not necessarily staying there but maybe wandering around that area.

- 2ish, break out and do sightseeing, shopping, w/e for a couple hours. Chances are we will probably split into groups depending on preferences.

- 7 or 8ish: get dinner, maybe someplace unusual/nice. One of my favorite places is Pod (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&view=text&hl=en&q=pod&near=Philadelphia,+PA&ie=UTF8&latlng=39953986,-75195358,12989431457614396772&ei=_ZnDRvzyNaXSrQKBi5D5BQ&sig2=hD4yNzwpY2Wbyb6-OKyNAA&cd=1), it's basically sort of asian food and it's moderate to pricey, but the atmosphere is a scream. If people want to go, I'll make reservations a few days before.

- Afterwards, either find a party (depends maybe on whether school is already starting for those colleges, does anybody know?) or go to a club of some kind, we've been discussing maybe Shampoo (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&view=text&hl=en&q=shampoo&near=Philadelphia,+PA&ie=UTF8&latlng=39958874,-75151994,8140051686487041911&ei=6ZrDRrPwCYakqwLzp4zqBQ&sig2=esnJkLwIq3XSuPxiGl7o6A&cd=1) although it is now made plain on their website that Saturday night will be a goth/industrial event, so maybe some other place if that's what people want to do.

- crash sometime that night

- if anybody will still be around/available, meet for breakfast, Cereality (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&view=text&hl=en&q=cereality&near=Philadelphia,+PA&ie=UTF8&latlng=39953207,-75195400,13526836940346586006&ei=E5vDRtbVDJ-WrALXspzvBQ&sig2=aAepxnn9Ns6GPu_ehRTs-g&cd=1) is a suggestion.

Even though I'm one of the closest to Philly, I know I won't be able to really show everyone around. It's a disappointment I have yet to correct, but I will be in the city every week Sunday-Thursday starting in late June, and then every week day at least starting late August. If we are going to get cheesesteaks, we have to get Steve's in Northeast; it's just so good.

Edit: and Kiryu must be there ;)

Ruffy also is from there.

I'm going to be in Philly this weekend, all weekend in fact.

And I'm free from Thursday-Sunday most of the summer, so find a convenient time and place for everybody and let's do this!

Edit: and I know University City like the back of my fucking hand.

I cannot be the host, as I have only been to Philadelphia a couple of times and I don't live there. But I want to go. So, host position open.
It will be in August. Sometime. Dates open.
University City area (http://www.ucityphila.org/) seems best, lots of reasonably priced B&Bs and fun places to go. Also quite lovely. Specific meet location open.

...aaaand...GO!
Perhaps you should hold it in Millersville then perhaps Corneliu/Lancaster County/Allegheny County can attend? :D

The only time I might be able to go this summer is after August 20th, cause that's when I'm getting back from Japan.

Also, I'd so get carded and kicked out of anyplace that cards and kicks out people. :(

I'd like to go, but I think Philly may be a bit too far for me to get to easily.

EDIT: according to Google, 555miles, or about 9hours 26minutes.

I should host it! You're meeting in Philly. I'm Philly. Sort of.

So, is it all right that I host it from the UK, without putting any effort in whatsoever, and don't actually attend?

I would recommend we start some place open and public, and proceed from there. As to time, I'm not so sure.

I'd personally recommend just meeting in the Main Concourse of 30th Street or something. Though that would probably nullify going to Pat's.

Oh it's not anywhere near University City.

It's on (or near) South Street, a good 30+ blocks out.

I've only ever been there twice. Took the subway there both times and was there so late we all got lost trying to walk back to campus. Luckily people in Philly tend not to mess with groups of 10 people many of which look reasonably capable of holding their own in a fight.

Oh...well hell, if people want to go, we should go. But we should go once we're all together. The train station is a logical place to meet. I suppose we should figure out a time in the early day, maybe around when people's trains will be coming in. Anybody taking the train, post what time you're coming in. Barring that, we should just TG each other a couple of cell phone numbers of those who will be there from the night before so they can just meet wherever we happen to be. Trains come in at all different times, and I'd rather not hang out in the train station all day.

I honestly have no clue. Hold on... http://septa.org/service/rr_schedules.html there. Those are the SEPTA (train) time listings.

Anyone coming in from Trenton taking regional transit (as opposed to AMtrak) would be taking the R7 Chestnut Hill East/Trenton line.

Note: they all open up as .pdf's.

Also: 30th street station puts us out about a block and a half from Drexel's campus and the "start" of University City. I know a ton of restaurants in the area, ranging from fairly expensive Italian, to fairly expensive gourmet pizza, to reasonably priced round-the-clock buffet Indian (though this is about a 10 block walk from 30th) and a shit-ton of nice pizza places.
There's also a Bubble Tea about 5 blocks from 30th, which is about a block away from a Starbucks, and also tons of other places to eat.

I mention this largely to make it clear that getting food is not an issue.

Can we agree to meet at a laid-back pizza place (preferably where you order the pizza at a counter and hang out at a table/booth so no waiter is trying to count us) to wait for the first meetup people?

Hmm...the closest two I can think of are Village Pizza and California Pizza on 33rd and Race. So 3 blocks west of 30th street station, then about 3-4 blocks up.

There's also Drexel Pizza, which is overpriced and kinda sucky, but it's closer, on 33rd and (I think) Arch.

Then there's Ed's on Lancaster about a block diagonally from the intersection of 34th and Market.

I know the perfect place. It's called Allegro's, its on the corner of 40th and ... spruce, i think? Anyway, being on 40th, its not difficult to get there from the 30th St Station (go in to the subway, take any of the green line trolleys to 40th St (which is right where the trolley gets above ground) and walk 2 or 3 blocks. Allegros is on the right hand side, on a corner.

I've never been to Ed's... I'll check it out some time this week. I trust NSers to be able to figure out the subway, it isn't that hard, and I can give detailed instructions and/or meet people at 30th St. But I'll check out Ed's, i'm amenable.

So where is everyone from who will be coming? What kind of stuff do you guys want to do?

Some of my favorite Philadelphia things include:
Olde City/Historic Philadelphia - I'm a history nerd, especially US history. There's the (overrated) Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall, plus the always fun carriage rides.

Reading Terminal Market - Future home of DubbRuff's bakery? Also, just generally a LOT of fun. It is very crowded and busy, though, so we'll just need to make sure either no one gets lost or we all agree to meet up again someplace

South Street - If you know anything about Philadelphia, it's self explanatory. If you don't, I have two words for you: Condom Kingdom

Cheesesteaks - Personally I'd rather not do Pat's or Geno's since they are so touristy. But if most of you are tourists, and that is what will make everyone happy, I'm okay with that. If not, I'd like to hear other suggestions, so far I've heard Steve's and Tony Luke's

Phillies - ok, so we don't have the greatest baseball team in the world. But the last phillies game I went to, the guy behind us just yelled about the highschoolers who were on some trip, and the girls who apparently didn't think boobs should be covered. Tickets are as cheap as $14, and not a bad view. Also, there are cheesesteaks to be had at the stadium, so if we did this we could kill 2 birds with one stone. Also, Chase Utley is hot. Yes, I realize this is probably only a selling point for Ilie and me.

Penn's Campus - ok, I know I'm a big dork. But I think Penn has a gorgeous campus. And you can get a filling meal from the food trucks for less than 6 bucks.

Food - we have great food. Vietnamese Food, Thai Food, Italian food. There is this great little hole-in-the-wall restaurant in South Philly that has the best ribs and best mussels in the WORLD.

We don't have to do any of the things I listed. Please give me you input, tell me what you like to do in Philly, or what you would like to see.

David Wright and Jose Reyes are both much hotter. And David Wright's hotness is a selling point for me to go anywhere. >.>

I've lived very, very close to Philly my whole life, but I really haven't been there a whole lot. I really don't care what we do, I'm up for almost anything. My school is blocks away from Penn and Drexel.

I hope that by the time we do this, I will have gained some better navigational skills and will know where things are. As of now, I know very little. I will be in Philly for 8 weeks this summer, living on campus for the summer program, I hope that will help. I'm not sure how I will be getting to the meeting place yet, as I'm very unfamiliar with public transportation (I've either been driven around or I drive in my car to wherever I need, although I have taken the train into the city a few times, mainly to go to Temple)

Well there you go! And its the national league so the prices should be very reasonable.

It being the national league I suppose I can smile and be happy for their success as it doesn't effect my Red Sox. Now what I wouldn't mind occurring is the Reds actually playing decently. Living in Cincy makes them my secondary team after all and having the worst record in baseball is just so damn irritating.

You'll get no argument from me. The guy going into the Hall of Fame seems assured and he is stuck on a team with no power and a shit pitching staff. Sucks for him. Other than him Cincy's got Arroyo who I find swings from average to good to awful and Adam Dunn who while can hit homeruns strikes out too many damn times.

I don't know about other Philly familiars, but I very much like just walking down Arch Street. It takes you past many many museums, cool shops, and past the arch in Chinatown. I've walked from RTM to 3rd & Arch and discovered a lot, and I'm sure the people in Starbucks across from Betsy's house know my name -- as do the people in the cool store across from the Real World house on 3rd.

I suggest eating at RTM, or in Chinatown. I also suggest buying tickets on the doubledecker buses (http://www.bigbus.co.uk/phila/html/phila_home.html), but they might be a little expensive. They're nice though, because you can hop on them at Betsy's house, and get off at the art museum, or Antique Row which is cool, and near South Street.

My suggestion if you want to have a touristy day is to stick to the Parkway and Arch Street.

But if you're really wanting to stay in Uni City, I have no clue..

WC Imperial Court is the host.

You are starting to depress me as well. I mean you are in throwing distance and can't go....

I... No! Don't look at me!

Geez, if I go, I'll be (by far) the oldest person there!

Only in years. You'd have no such concern, maturity wise ;)

I am 17 going on 18 (damn you Sound of Music, Damn you!!!) I'll be 18 by the time we meet. I'll only have been 18 for about 2 weeks at that point.
Remind me to tell you happy birthday!
S'ok. You'll be our responsible adult chaperone.
Boooo!!!
And buy us alcohol!!!

.. wait.. he's seen me drunk in the NYE thread..

..

And buy you guys alcohol..!
Yaaaaay!!!! (Don't worry Ruffman, I'll slip ya some booze.)
If I'm supposed to be the responsible adult, we're all in big trouble.

I don't like you guys nearly enough to break the law for you. :D
LoL aint that the truth. And I don't blame you.
I'm sure you all can find some way to stay entertained without the devil juice. You are all (reasonably) intelligent people.

How about a Phillies game? They in town that weekend? Baseball always works. :)
I vote for a Phillies game ONLY if this is a get-together lasting more than one day. (IE, sat and sun or something like that). If so, then I think its a great idea. If not, I think there are too many other things we could be doing with our time.

Oy vey! Traffic's going to be a major bitch that day.
Any particular reason? Also, shouldnt we all just take SEPTA so it wont matter?

I'd rather not do a baseball game on the 25th. Though once again it's everyone else's decision.

Also, I'm in Philly right now. And NOONE is here. I fucking hate Memorial Day. Sorry I was visiting grandparents in OH.

I'd rather not. We'd have a good time, but I think it would be better if we all just did a number of things around the city. I concure

I think we should headquarter in Uni City, but I think the stuff we should do and see are the kinds of things you suggested.

Also, Johnny if you're reading this: Evenif youcancome, you can't come. Ithink I speak for everyone when I say tha we don't want a 13 y o along for this. You're entirely too young, especially if there's gonna besome alcohol invoved, potentially.

Also: If we can secure a place, is there anyone who'llbe able to buy liquor by then?

Edit: No offense Johnny, bu if you're really 13, you shouldn't be meeting random people on the ninternet in person.
You don't speak for everyone. darling. I don't want Johnny to not come bc of his age any more that I would want Maineiacs to not come bc of his age. People of all ages are welcome to meet each other and explore the city. If alcohol does get involved, I think everyone agrees that those who are too young shouldn't drink. But he can still party with us.

Okay, let me see. I'll be 25 when we go. I don't much care for sports, but I do care for eating out, shopping, having fun photo ops and crashing parties in the houses around the universities. Seriously, I hope school is in session because Philly students throw the best parties, sometimes we've gone up there just to walk around and find a good party in University City. As for other things to do, let's see...we've seen improv comedy at Helium Comedy Club, that was a blast. When we went they were having some kind of festival in Clark Park, not sure how often that sort of thing goes on.
You've been to Clark Park?!?! WHEN?! I live right near there. You might have met me. Or my ex (he tends to be at those things more than I do). School isnt in session as far as I know, and I'm guessing you went to the Mayfair in Clark Park which only happens once a year. (If, however, you are ever in hte neighborhood, lemme know and I'll swing on the swings with you!)

Hmmm... I actually go to school in the city even though I could walk to Upper Darby High or Bonner...
lol Whores on a Hill...
Hmm, I know people in Philly, including a former NSer. But I probably can't slip away to go meet random people the weekend of my little sister's birthday.
This is true. THat would make you a terrible brother.
Oh shit... August 25? That's during training camp... those two weeks I'm luck if I can get out of bed on the weekends...
Training camp for what? Soccer? I'm guessing soccer *nods*
pffft screw west, Roman's where its at ;)

i dunno if i can come to this im going to wildwood some time in August
LoL Roman is awful. Do you know Mr Monillas or Mr DiBenidetto? God I miss those teachers
ROMAN?!

Oh god... that school is a bunch of fags... I mean c'mon they're an all guys school and their colors are purple and gold...
*seconded*
yea going to an all guys school sucks, but whens the last time you guys won anything for the PCL?

damn straight they are....colors of the Roman Emperors
Didn't our football team finally win the championship this year? Also, you do know that Roman Emperors slept with little boys, don't you?
I don't suppose anyone can somehow squeeze the earth to make Cincinnati and Philadelphia a wee bit closer?
Dude that would be AWESOME
pma is really neat, could i suggest penns landing(kinda part of olde city)or the franklin institute, boat house row is pretty nice also.
i lived in philly and worked there the better part of 10 years, know the city like my house, worked in every inch of the city, which is why i dont live there now.
downtown is downtown anywhere,but i love southstreet,the museam area,old city,penns landing.

as far as cheesesteaks,i cant rmember the name of the place on oregon ave down by delaware ave.never ate there but i heard it was decent.
also the nicks roastbeef place is awesome..not the on on 2nd street but the original over on 22nd,great food cheap.
Very good suggestions *laments lack of Y100 to throw concert at Penns Landing*

OK kids, I'm back, at least for a time. In August I will try in earnest to make more definite plans, so please keep shootinng around ideas and suggestions!

Has Monillas told you his middle name is perfecto and about his retarded kid?
Monillas taught me Latin and French 1. He was one of the greatest teachers I ever had.

Does Mr Di play guitar for your school masses? Has he done Mary Did You Know for Christmas? And Don't Laugh At Me? Omg its ALMOST enough to make me miss highschool.

I was going to get a room at the Castle B&B since it is the cheapest, but this is reminding me that Mike wanted to get a place at the Sheraton so he doesn't have to feel weird about (essentially) staying in somebody's home and worrying about coming in late and whatnot.

That'd be the Sheraton on 35th and Chestnut? Hehehe, they used to house Penn kids there when their housing ran out of space. It's a pretty nice place, actually. Can't remember if they have wetbars though.

Alright folkety-folks, I think it's time to start getting together a general list of things to do for our meetup. We don't have to have a schedule or anything, just options.

I anticipate that we will come together for a big meet-and-greet, some of us will branch out in the late afternoon and do stuff they want to do with likeminded NSers (or rest, for us introverts), then come back together in the evening-nighttime to carouse and generally paint the town red.

Here is stuff I like to do when in Philadelphia:

- eat out at weird places, like Cereality and Pod
- shop at weird stores
- visit used bookstores
- take pictures of the lovely historic houses
- go to interesting crafts fairs/local art expos
- see comedy shows
- drink at weird bars

My friends constantly veto my desire to eat at weird places, shop at weird stores, visit used bookstores, and drink at weird bars. (Taking pictures and going to craft fairs/expos are secondary interests.) Just yesterday I took a friend to New Hope, PA... which certainly has plenty of the above... and I didn't get to spend but five minutes surrounded by "weird." :(

Actually, so far it doesn't look like anyone I really "know" from NS is planning to go, so I'm not at all sure that I'll come to hang with a bunch of strangers.

But if there's someone who can show me the "cool" side of Philly (and doesn't mind being a tour guide to a complete stranger), I might add to the "pro" column of my "should I / shouldn't I" notes.
