It's that time of year again...Eurovision!

Yup, this Saturday it's the festival of camp that is Eurovision. After Lordi's spectacular win last year, this year's contest is being held in Helsinki. I've already found my favourites - Ukraine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnV7Nydf9L4) and Israel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_h_rLKTLvs) (check the trip-hop Hebrew rap halfway through the Israeli entry). Please note that these are just my favourites to win, not actually what I think are good songs. I mean, if they were, they'd stand fuck all chance of winning.

Anyway. Who do you want to/think will win? How will Britain do? In case you need reminding, this travesty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kNoAddyUMQ) is our entry this year. I love the British public sometimes...

Yeah, there'll be a poll. It might even be relevant to the thread...

Yeah...I really do think that the Scandinavian countries should just enter their black metal bands. Certainly would be the most memorable Eurovision ever.

What's the worst thing that could happen? At worst, all the other acts get eaten by the Norwegian entery, and Eurovision gets canceled. I'd give them a Nobel Prize for that.

Israel is in Europe?

We go through this in every bloody Eurovision thread.

Here is a simple recap: the Eurovision Song Contest is open to members of the EBU/UER (European Broadcasting Union/Union Européenne de Radio-Télévision). Israel is a member, hence it gets to compete. Morocco has competed in the past. Armenia and Georgia are competing this year. So get over Israel already!

Anyway, one need only take a look at my signature to hear my favourite (http://media.putfile.com/Molitva) this year.

I've not been paying enough attention... I think that maybe it's being shown over here in Aus... but, will I have to stay up all fecking night, like with the cricket? Ach!

People taking Eurovision seriously, and criticising the standards and taste they associate with it, eh, it's like people still mocking Bjork's swan dress. It's Bjork, it's supposed to look like a fecking swan, and it does! It's Eurovision... it's supposed to be a big stupid European panto, and it is!

Imma get drunk and force Aussies to watch it. That'll make the bastards like me.

Lordi kicked ass. Best thing ever to happen in Eurovision.

On the subject of the British entry...

1) Did I miss something - Are British Airways the sponsor, or something?

2) Are we going for the 'camp' vote? Seriously... "Would you like something to suck on for landing, Sir?" Did Graham Norton write it?

Career suicide. It can be good for bands to launch a career (think ABBA) or to revive a career (Katrina & the Waves), but for a 'good' band they'd lose pretty much any credibility they had.

To all brits...

Be glad we got what we got. The other contender was a friggin' power-ballad.

My dad and I were laying bets on which chorus we'd get her voice going all shaky in and neither of us got it right (first I think, that's gotta be some kind of record).

At least this one gets in the spirit of things.

It's only natural. Songs that are in English just have a generally higher chance of winning. When was the last time you heard a non-English song win?

It's kinda... "Holy shit. We sell a hundred thousand CDs per album. Each concert we give, we play in front of several thousand people. We were at Wacken Open Air. We generally play a flat two hours and get the crowds crazy. Yeah, we could totally associate with a bunch of poppers, choose the one three-minute song we have *, and do a three-minute gig. That's totally worth it.

"Erm, except not. Fuck that shit."

* Due to the number of participants, Eurovision doesn't allow songs longer than three minutes. Similarly, the time table is too narrow to allow for big decorations or whatever - imagine Rammstein without the fire, if you will.

Too bad I can never remember country names to match the songs..

Those I do remember:

- I think my top ones were France (WTF was up with them getting close to no points?!), Sweden, Romania, Russia, and someone I appear to have forgotten.

- of the usual non-quality were most remarkably Turkey, Greece, Belarus, the last two (three?) entries - honestly, tree of passion, decorated with what appears to be loo paper? hypnotic song withrandom drums? Girl who forgets not to sing whe breathing in? - , the monstrous British entry, the incredible failure that was the Irish performance (As our commentator put it so aptly "Now there's a country where nearly everyone can sing.. and they pick the one woman who can neither sing nor dance?"), and.. many others.

- as one of my flatmates put it: "Well, at least an ugly, fat lesbian without any charme at all but a nice voice won. That's good news for the music-vs-good looks debate, right?"

P.S. Congrats to Fassigen for getting his wish as far as this year's winner goes! :]

I think the way to win (if you really want to; personally, I reckon this years ones from the UK, France and Ukraine were the right kind of tongue-in-cheek approach to take regardless of votes) is to try to be a bit more tangential in our song styles. Suggestions:

2) make fun of stereotypical English things like rain and umbrellas and bowler hats and bad food and afternoon tea
Funny how stereotypes work... It really doesn't rain much here (except for the last few days), I've never seen a bowler hat worn in anger, and afternoon tea is almost unheard of.

As for our food.. Our food is brilliant. And our words are backed with nuclear weapons. So there :p

3) be hurt if your press makes every story about Germany a story of WWII clichés about little Hitlers and Blitzkriegs

Don't forget reserving sun-loungers with towels! Although I've never seen that happen, either, but what does reality have to do with it. And ruthless Teutonic efficiency and engineering! And the lack of a sense of humour, but that one's not very accurate either. Ho hum.
But I think it's quite telling that the thing we're most proud of was a little spat that finished over sixty years ago, occasionally punctuated by about one footbally thing ever (I forget, I don't like the game, but wasn't that a while ago too? 1966 or something?).

4) take a cheap flight to go shopping in London over the weekend.

But... Why would you do that?

I don't know how you could make it any different - it's hardly surprising that countries that until very recently were one nation are voting for each other. It would be like breaking up the UK and then expressing surprise that England voted for Scotland.

In fairness, though, the UK entries for the last few years have been utter shite, so it's hardly the voting systems fault that we've not won it.

I hear there's talk about trying to make it more representative via allocating votes according to inhabitants, but meh. While that might give some relieve to the "Eastern block problem", it doesn't alleviate teh general problem of neighboring countries voting for each other / other assorted non-music-based voting behaviour, like huge immigrant communities *looks at Germany's unbroken habit of given max points to Turkey*

Surprising how I could predict the outcome better than most of the self proclaimed "experts" by basic knowledge in geography, history and politics. It's always been political. The reason why the west European countries scored shit this year was because the songs stank. The East had much better songs this year.

There should be a jury because people are too stupid to vote. They only vote for their neighbours or immigrants vote for their home countries, an additional reason why the eastern countries get more votes from the west than the other way around.

I'm boycotting this contest until a competent jury is deciding again.

Serbia is a very deserving winner, and its geographical and political situation had nothing to do with it; they've consistently placed well and they got high scores across the board, not to mention of course that the song is beautiful and sung very competently.

Not to mention that I wished for high places for both Ukraine and Russia! This year was very kind on my sympathies, so yay! :)

Ireland came last! Woohoo! Serves the people who organised the Irish entry right for sending such a muppet of a singer (worst performance of the night, I agree) to represent our country. 5 points (who gave them to us, by the way?) - they should've gotten 0! Maybe Ireland might cop on and realise that they'll never win with 'traditional' Irish songs and no presentation.

Honestly, though, I feel sorry for the UK. They tried so hard - their song was so incredibly cheesy and camp - if it had been performed by an Eastern European country it would've done well.

As for Serbia winning - I'm actually quite pleased. It was a nice song and the woman could actually sing in tune. If the Ukraine, on the other hand, had won, I would've been furious - a terrible song, and a tacky performance. I hate to say it but it was mostly political voting. I sat watching the scores with my atlas, picking out the countries that bordered each one, or in many cases the countries from whence many immigrants in said country came from, and I have to tell you that most of the time I wasn't one bit surprised. Even Ireland voted somewhat politically - Lithuania had one of the lowest scores, and yet it got 12 points from Ireland (quite a few Lithuanians over here).

Kudos to Finland, though, for putting on a great show. Their lighting, the stage, and the overall presentation was superb. Even the presenters didn't come on too often (or change their outfits every 20 minutes) nor were they very annoying (except for thet blonde girl in the pink dress behind the scenes). A very good show, if an unsurprising ending.

Well, Finland is debatable as an Western European country seeing as it shares a border with Russia. Hence part of the reason why it won last year. The funny thing is that if you take out the big 4 (UK, France, Spain and Germany) who automatically qualify for the final every year the onle other Western European countries were Sweden and Ireland - so the Eurovision was dominated by Eastern European countries (some of whom I wasn't even aware of being considered as part of Europe - Georgia and Armenia are further east than Iraq and on my atlas were shown as part of Asia). In fact, in the semi final 10/10 of the countries voted into the final were from Eastern Europe - doesn't really seem fair, does it?

The fact that you liked Israel's tripe automatically disqualifies you from having any standing to criticise the Serbian entry, which indeed did get high scores from most countries. So, to answer your question: almost everyone voted to some extent or another for Serbia, and they did so because it was deserving.

Well, Finland is debatable as an Western European country seeing as it shares a border with Russia.

Norway shares a border with Russia as well, so your comment is completely irrelevant. Finland is Western European. That is not debatable at all.

Hence part of the reason why it won last year.

No, the reason it won was that they sent a good song. Just like Greece (another country that counts as Western European) the year before them. So, we have two Western countries win consecutively, but that for some reason isn't enough for xenophobes, is it? They never want anyone else to win, do they? So they bitch and moan about "voting blocks" even after "their side" () won twice in a row.

The funny thing is that if you take out the big 4 (UK, France, Spain and Germany) who automatically qualify for the final every year the onle other Western European countries were Sweden and Ireland

If you look at the songs sent by the other Western countries, they sucked last year like they sucked this year. So, they didn't deserve to be in the final.

- so the Eurovision was dominated by Eastern European countries (some of whom I wasn't even aware of being considered as part of Europe - Georgia and Armenia are further east than Iraq and on my atlas were shown as part of Asia).

Georgia and Armenia are considered transcontinental countries. They are both European and Asian. Not that it is in any way relevant to the ESC because the competing nations do not have to be European - they just have to be members of the EBU/UER. That is why Israel competes. That is why Morocco competed. That was why Lebanon would have competed last year had they not withdrawn.

In fact, in the semi final 10/10 of the countries voted into the final were from Eastern Europe - doesn't really seem fair, does it?

This is a competition. It's not about being fair, and it's quite pathetic for sore losers to invoke such a puerile notion.

And for those who don't speak the language

Prayer
Ni oka da sklopim I can't close my eyes
Postelja prazna tera san The empty bed chases sleep away
A život se topi And my life is melting away
I nestaje brzo, k'o dlanom o dlan And it's disappearing quickly, in a split second

K'o razum da gubim It seems I'm losing my mind
Jer stvarnost i ne primećujem As I don't even notice reality
Još uvek te ljubim I still love you
Još uvek ti slepo verujem I still trust you blindly

K'o luda, ne znam kuda Like crazy, I don't know where to go
Ljubavi se nove bojim I'm afraid of a new love
A dane, žive rane And the days are like open wounds
Više ne brojim I don't count them anymore

Molitva, kao žar na mojim usnama je Prayer, like ardour on my lips
Molitva, mesto reči samo ime tvoje Prayer, just your name, instead of words
Nebo zna, kao ja Heaven knows, just as I do
Koliko puta sam ponovila How many times I've repeated this
To nebo zna, baš kao ja Heaven knows, just as I do
Da je ime tvoje moja jedina molitva That your name is my only prayer

Al Bogu ne mogu lagati But I can't lie to God
Sve dok se molim As long as I pray
A lažem ako kažem And I'd be lying if I said
Da te ne volim That I don't love you

Molitva, kao žar na mojim usnama je Prayer, like ardour on my lips
Molitva, mesto reči samo ime tvoje Prayer, just your name, instead of words
Nebo zna, baš kao ja Heaven knows, just as I do
Koliko puta sam ponovila How many times I've repeated this
To nebo zna, baš kao ja Heaven knows, just as I do
Da je ime tvoje moja molitva That your name is my prayer
(Molitva, molitva) (Prayer, prayer)

I nebo zna, baš kao ja And heaven knows, just as I do
Koliko puta sam ponovila How many times I've repeated this
To nebo zna, baš kao ja Heaven knows, just as I do
Da je ime tvoje moja jedina molitva That your name is my only prayer

ukraine was rediculously shit, but this was eurovision, it embodied the spirit off the event as far as i'm concerned. israel's entry was 'controversial' and frankly all over the place, hence it was interesting and deserved further recognition. serbia was simply boring, there is no other way to describe it. pure pap. all other entries were beyond mention, well germany was entertaining if entirely unoriginal. and let me be counted as saying britain's entry was a disgrace.

okay, but we are talking about eurovision here. it was controversial according to some interpretations. most of them encounter eurovision as a parade of power-balad singers with there eyes on some sort of recognition, if not 'the stars', and subject matter restricted to bollocks about love and patriotism and whatever the fuck they were on about. israel's entry was different, it stretched what eurovision sounded like, and it stretched what eurovision stands for. unfortunately the producer/mixer was a woebegone amateur and they fell flat on their face.

Actually, no. Eurovision has seen many nonsensical entries over the years and Israel's was simply the crappier of the sort. There was nothing in it that hadn't already been seen, such as for instance in Austria's 2003 entry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZJt6Gv4XPk), the shtick of which Israel seem to have diligently emulated.

For the opera genre, the Slovenian entrant was bottom of the barrel. As a fan of opera, I was disgusted by the low quality of her "singing", which it pains me to even call that, not to mention her insincere countenance (one tip: when people only smile with their mouths and not their eyes, know that they are faking it) and appalling dress. And that cheap gimmick with the lights in the hand? She looked like a leper with lesions! You sell yourself to a bargain, and she should be as embarrassed as no doubt every Slovenian who has anything with opera to do was.

I had a lot of fun watching this whilst simultaneously cross-commenting on the #ns_general IRC channel and in other places. It was an enchanting evening, some wonderful songs and some that really sucked.

To the British whiners...... let me be very, very, VERY honest here. I'm Dutch, and as such I like Britain. You are our neighbours, you're generally nice people. And there is Shell and all those other nice multinational businesses. We're chums. If anyone is likely to vote for you, it's us.

HOWEVER.

The United Kingdom entry to eurovision sucked. And I don't just mean that it was bad. It was mind-bendingly HORRIBLE. Moreover, it was without a doubt the worst song in the entire songfestival, though Irelands attempt to woe us with traditional dresses, leprechauns and bad singing came damn close. I personally don't understand it. I love British music generally. Britpop is great. WHY did you guys have to send those.. well.... monkeys to represent you?

I'll choose a powerful ballad over patriotic airline-innuendo any day.

During the tally I kept hoping the Ukraine would not win. A tin-foil transvestite with a big communist star on top. Seriously. What are people thinking???

In my opinion, both Finland and Germany deserved to score higher, so they can crai more about how OMG Eastern Europe political vote NOES. I dunno.. the German guy was cute AND could sort of sing. (The Greek guy was cuter, but his lack of talent slightly annoyed me.)

Serbia, on the other hand, actually did have a really nice song. I enjoyed it. It was genuine, it had depth. A deserving winner.
