It was a fair question. He had no problem with the confederate flag as long as it didn't fly higher then the US flag.

meh. Fly any flag you want, it's all in free speech. As long as you don't trample on other people's rights, you have your right of free speech.

Wear that Nazi thing on your arm is fine with me. Brandish a knife and threaten to kill a Jew while wearing that isn't.

We all have different opinions, some more to the extreme. Preventing a person's expression of his/her belief just because the majority deems it unacceptable is tyranny of the majority, not a democracy.

So it's ok to call blacks Niggers as long as I don't threaten them?

It's ok to talk about Niggers don't belong here as long as I don't threaten them?

What about pedophiles? Their expressions about sex with children are frowned on by the majority?

Freedom is expression isn't a simple matter.....

To me, the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism. The fact that a group of states chose to secede over "states rights" when the main issue was slavery alone is enough for me to be convinced of that as fact. The fact the Ku Klux Klan flies the Confederate flag makes it even more of a symbol of hatred.

I used to say when I was a kid that I'd want to burn the Confederate flag as a symbol of protest. I'd like to see someone do that now in the presence of the KKK.

You don't even need them. Try that in the Southern States. Especially Virginia, Georgia and South Carolina.....

For those like me who aren't from the US, there is an interesting documentary on the Southern States of the US called "2001 Maniacs" which explains the culture behind this debate.

What do the people of NS think of allowing Confederate flags to be flown? Is it just a tribute to history, or outright racist? I find it quite offensive, but for the sake of arguement, if no one comes foward to defend it, I will not mind playing the role of devils advocate.

If I could find one in a store here (I'm in Massachusetts) and at a reasonable price, I'd proudly fly it.

If you have Flea Markets in your area, I'm sure you could find one their if not there are a lot of online places to order for reasonable prices. I think the going price locally here in Florida is around $20.

because that is the racists' chosen terminology. we already know the guy isn't from the south, so we can't blame it on passive cultural acceptance of the name. the only other people who use it are either pro-slavery racists and lying revisionists or the incredibly naive who buy their bullshit.

Germany had the good sense to stop flying the Nazi flag. All the Confederate flag stands for is racism and regressivism. If that's what they want to champion, I suppose it's best that we know that up front.

How about in exchange for being allowed to fly the Stars and Bars, every Red State must officially recognize and celebrate William Tecumseh Sherman Day?

But what's wrong with the term itself? I mean it doesn't sound very biased like "war of northern agression" or something similar would be. Especially as term "civil war" is usually used for describing conflicts which are fought for control over whole country(Russian civil war, English civil war, Spanish civil war, China civil war, Finnish civil war, Greek civil war) not for conflicts where part of country tries to secede.

Olmedreca;12295834']But what's wrong with the term itself?

nothing, in itself. just like there is nothing wrong with the term 'final solution' in itself. but terms don't exist in vacuums - they can carry additional meaning in symbolism, connotation, and usage associations. and when you adopt some term used by a particular group and use it in the same contexts they do, then you are associating yourself with that group. your only hope of avoiding that is to consistently and loudly distance your usage from theirs. and even that might not work - particularly if there isn't a compelling reason to adopt the tainted terminology in the first place.

Typical Yankee ignorance. The "Stars and Bars" are not the same as the Navy Jack that is being discussed.

If you look at the proportions, the Navy Jack is the flag that people are objecting to. The battle flag was squarish. The Navy Jack is more of a traditional flag shape and size.

oookayyy?

I think I can still see and judge dimensions.....

Wouldn't it be better to explain why everybody wants to fly the Navy Jack.....
