So I got my tattoo yesterday, and while its excessively sore to move, I love it.

I was wondering what people thought of it. The symbol of a rose has personal connections with me that run deep through my past while the symbol is based off of my favorite book and altered by the artist slightly. Comments please.

You've got a rose shaped like a crucifix on your back that you'll need lasers to remove. Congrats.

Well, now not only is the symbol of a rose running deep through your past but deep through your back too. /stating the obvious

It's a pretty cool design, but I think I'll stick to avvys to show off my taste in symbols/music/video games/gods/etc.

Next time if you feel like drawing, get a piece paper and pencil or even some pretty pens. It hurts less, it wont get infected, and when you get older and your tastes change you can put the piece of paper in the attic.

Although this isnt of course universally true, in my life i have noticed an inverse relationship to the number of tattoos someone has and thier IQ. Just one tattoo only seems to be an exception but when it gets more then that the rule seems to kick in.

Well, I for one think body mods are a "want" not a "need".

If you don't like the body that you were born with, and feel compelled to make permanent or semi-permanent modifications, you should start with your brain first.

I don't usually combat other's views upon art, but tattoos suck! I'm sorry to hear that your chance of dying of infection has risen %66 percent along with back pains!

And if you decide to remove that tattoo, (which I hope you do), you will need a professional -tattoo-remover that removes them via laser, which will UNDOUBTEDLY cost you 3000$ just for the minimum treatment!

I'm sorry for critisizeing, but this a general forum, and I feel the need to say my mind.

I wont get it removed. i've been thinking about getting this for many many years, and made sure i wouldn't regret it.

I went to an all female tattoo parlor and got it done. it was really pricy, because they are really clean/good. so, meh. I'll take my chances. it wont' get infection given the fact i'm babying it till no end for at least a week and a half.

I think it's alright, I think it would have looked better in color though. All that really matters is whether you like it or not.

I have one tatoo on my upper left arm (shoulder) a bald eagle. I plan on having it redone and plan on adding an American Flag on a staff that the eagle appears to be holding. Pretty cool. I love the bald eagle and the American Flag and I really don't expect me to ever change in those regards because who knows me better than me. :D

Moi aussi. I spent some time at a few Ivy League schools and didn't like any of them. Princeton has awful food and the distances between important buildings you're bound to visit daily are astronomical. Yale is completely surrounded by secret societies, terrible drivers, and youth gangs, and it's more than a bit pretentious. You seem like a lovely young woman, Ravelyn. I'm not a great fan of tattoos and wouldn't get one myself, yours looks pretty well done. I suppose the back offers the largest and least sensitive area of skin for decorating oneself, but I wonder about putting a tattoo there. You said the rose is very meaningful to you and you've thought about it for quite a while, and yet, by its placement, you aren't going to be able to enjoy it except in photographs. And people won't see it unless you have your back to them. Anyway, just some observations from curiosity.

Quite true. It usually works, unfortunately... trapped as I am amongst other high school seniors, I hear them announcing their ambition to one day get into a small community college or something. I mention the names of some of the universities I've applied to and they look at me like "WTF?" And for a while, when people asked me my SAT score and I told them, I gathered a reputation for being the schoolwide smart person, even though I was only in the lower 2200s. its not supposed to be a cross. if it was i would have made the thorn leaves longer and had the design that way. it is supposed to be a rose. the reason i didn't get color was becasue it fades, and well, i really like tribal artwork. Actually, not all that many. Simply because many of the cybersexers are low self-esteeming teenagers living in their parents' basements, and/or paedophiles masturbating to pretending to be underage boys/girls... and neither group would be that inclined to actually go out and meet someone, whereas people who actually are who they say they are/are comfortable enough with themselves/have a good knowledge of martial arts and/or weaponry would be far more inclined to do so, which have resulted in a couple of NS relationships (i.e. Jim & Roan, Silver & Hans, PM & Glitzi et al.)

I did that too, but they all lost interest. :(

I do have a good knowledge of martial arts [shaolin kempo specifically]. That's fun.
I always wanted to learn one of those barely known and extremely powerful martial arts, but my town doesn't offer it so I'm in non-competitive taekwondo for now, i.e. the kind that they don't use in tournaments because it can actually kill or incapacitate people. My reasoning for avoiding NS meets is firstly that none have occurred in the New England area to my knowledge, and secondly due to assorted mental problems and shit that prevent social interaction from being feasible. (Social interaction that doesn't involve me ruthlessly killing people, that is.)

Yes, but I do not believe I will get any more additions to it, unless something huge happens in my life or a major event that would lead to me getting another. For me it had to have a real meaning behind it before I got it. I have no regrets and love it.

Actually, there are some that are more powerful: for instance, kickboxing, the assorted jitsus, et al. There is one style of fighting, for instance, that specifically trains its adherents to knock someone else out (or kill them) in a few seconds. Besides, most people perform only competitive taekwondo, which is not nearly as effective (but far easier).

Yes, no one in our area bothers attaining anything in their life. Our education level is the highest in the country, and our income is also extremely high. We also have the best public schools in the nation. We also have the highest proportion of educated people in the US. Which includes me.

Yes, that's a real practical skill there, riding a horse in competition. LOL.

Wait, you attack me and now it's my fault? Are you the kid who threw the egg at the car and when you got your ass kicked called the cops? I'm sorry for pointing out that my wife is cultured. Do a look up for the area code 07028 and you'll see that my town would piss on your "area." I came from the gutter to get whwere I am and the hell if I'm going back. Yes, my wife is hot, we're both smart, hardworking, and complete people. You want to bait me and get me to respond aand you got what you wanted. Well, I for one think body mods are a "want" not a "need".

If you don't like the body that you were born with, and feel compelled to make permanent or semi-permanent modifications, you should start with your brain first.
The body I was born with weighed less than 8 pounds. I'm not saying that I dislike that body, mind you, but I hope you will understand that I have made some changes to it over the years.

As for decorative modifications, I figure it's up to individual taste. I find piercings and tattoos very interesting (and often very attractive), and I have few of my own.

I've experienced more painful and lasting ill effects from eating a poor diet than I have from any of my "body mods," and I've been at far greater medical risk simply due to living in a city all my life than I have been from getting any of my piercings or ink.

It's possible to get stupid piercings or tats. It's possible to get pierced or inked in a profoundly stupid way, or for profoundly stupid reasons. But that's pretty much true of every single thing humans can choose to do with their bodies: there's always a way to be stupid, and there are always going to be people who go the stupid rout. Meh.

I like it alot. Looks great, looks like it was well done, and has meaning to you. Bueno.

Although this isnt of course universally true, in my life i have noticed an inverse relationship to the number of tattoos someone has and thier IQ. Just one tattoo only seems to be an exception but when it gets more then that the rule seems to kick in.
I go to a top university and have two tattoos, with plans to get many more.

Amazingly, getting ink injected into your skin in now way influences nor is influenced by IQ.

I don't usually combat other's views upon art, but tattoos suck! I'm sorry to hear that your chance of dying of infection has risen %66 percent along with back pains!Nice made up stats. Cute, really. There is only a short period where a tattoo can be infected. Infection rates are low, particularly if done in a clean place. Having a tattoo on the spine is in no way related to back pain, as that is related to the disks between the bones, not the skin that covers them.

Wellesley then transferred to Bryn Mawr. Next year Columbia Med.Wellesly scares me :(

Neither Wellesley nor Bryn Mawr are Ivy League schools. Good luck in New York, though.Actually, Wellesley is often listed as part of the ivy league as one of the smaller liberal arts schools, as opposed to the large ones such as Yale.
I do love it. i will love it even more once it heals and i can sleep on my back again.
give it 3 or 4 days. After 6 or 7, it will look weird untill you shower, when you will get a handful of black skin. it's fun.

I have to do that some day, but with wine, so it looks kinda like I'm pissing blood and drinking it.
expelling the myth: having it done on your spine does NOT hurt worse than when you aren't on the spine. I have the top of the stem, that little curve, a lot of line work was done there and that is the only thing that really hurt because of that.
Not that I have a tattoo, but I've heard that how much it hurts depends no how much fat and muscle there is under the skin, so getting your arm tattooed would hurt less than your ankle.

Back on topic, that is a pretty cool tattoo.

Back off topic, if I do get a tattoo I'm probably gonna get one that only shows up under UV light. It ups the coolness and lowers the "ZOMG that's gonna look sooooo shit when you're old and wrinkly!"

People seem to have odd ideas about tattoos. I wonder about this. Because most times that I have found out that someone else had tattoos, I had already decided to be intimate enough with them that such things could no longer matter.

trust me on this.... all tattoo's blur......if properly done the blurring will have a minimal effect on the design......

it shouldn't .....if you watch Miami ink they always refuse to do small details because of blurring....yours is big enough that blurring shouldn't affect the look, but it will soften over time....

Hello all,

Let me say first and foremost that tattoos are both an expression of the tattooist and the person getting the tattoo. Typically, tattoos have been an expression and have reasoning. During the late 90's, however, they took a turn for the worse, as they became 'hip' and 'cool'. It was also during this time that they opened up to a much larger audience.

Now, there are still people out there that look down on them, because they are too closed-minded to believe that expression can be done through a tattoo gun. If you are one of these people, then you have my greatest sympathy. Only when you are under the tattoo gun, feeling the adrenaline pumping through your veins, can you truly understand the point of getting one.

It's not like when you get your ears pierced. They have meaning. Unlike the people that pierce random parts of your body, for no particular reason, short of 'Hey, man. It's f***ing cool, dude.'. Tattoos have, since their inception, been a way of expression for people.

I, personally, have 8 tattoos with plans on getting more. Each of them have a reason, like the person that started this whole thread in the first place. Tattoos aren't just needles and ink, they're a lifestyle. If you have a problem with that, I've heard that Cuba needs more workers.

Sincerely,
~TnD~

Oh? Well, I went to an ivy league college and will be in med school next year.
I got it on my back just low enough so that i can wear scrubs and it won't be seen, i can wear a business outfit and it won't be seen either.

Lovely tattoo ;)
Yeah, I don't get the IQ / tattoo correlation that that other fellow was trying to make. *shrug* I'm going for my PhD in Forensic Psychology, have a tattoo, and am making plans for tattoo #2. :D I had mine done a little over two months. Fantastic job, it didn't even scab.

@OP - Nice tattoo. I at the very least respect anyone who can go through that kind of pain. And I'm also a fan of the rose, so I heartily approve of the design.

Hey, here's a question for my fellow ink-wearing folk:

I got a tat on the inside of my wrist about 3 years ago. It's black ink only. It healed swiftly and cleanly, no infection or problems.

From time to time, though, the tat seems to get a little irritated or something. It gets raised up, sort of like how it felt just after it was done, and is a little bit ichy or sore to the touch. This has happened maybe half a dozen times since I got it done, and always subsides within a few hours.

Does this happen to anybody else?

Actually, Wellesley is often listed as part of the ivy league as one of the smaller liberal arts schools, as opposed to the large ones such as Yale.

I could list Oral Roberts University or the New England Tractor Trailer Training School as an Ivy League school if I wanted to, but it wouldn't make it so.

I hate lower back tattoos. I find them so tackey. but that is my opinion. I believe my friend's term to describe them really covers it. "ass antlers (http://static.flickr.com/35/92580336_01c071b07c_m.jpg)"

never happened with mine but I've read about it happening to others so it's not uncommon......if you have doubts see a dermatologist....black ink tattoos are the easiest to remove if necessary....

if money were no object I'd fly down to Miami for my tattoo, the people are Miami Ink are excellent....there are tattoo artists that just stick on a tattoo and and collect their money....then there are true artists that consider the big picture and how the tattoo will fit your body, and advise you on your choice and even refuse to do it if they disagree, that's Miami Ink.....

AND If you happen to be closer to NYC, try Last Rites. Paul Booth and his guys are gods among tattoo artists (Dan Marshall did mine). A bit more expensive than most, but it's worth every penny. Very professional (*gasp! you go for a consultation first, no walk -ins  )

Ravelyn's Tattoo (http://profile.ak.facebook.com/v52/828/26/n10302344_2876.jpg)

I was wondering what people thought of it. The symbol of a rose has personal connections with me that run deep through my past while the symbol is based off of my favorite book and altered by the artist slightly. Comments please.

I think it is very nice... nto that I personally care for the design myself, but it is good looking, and was clearly well-done

I will also not say that you are foolish for merely wanting art on your body, especially in a concealable spot, the body does not determine the IQ, for those that think more tattoos must mean less intelligence

and as far as potential removal, I hope that it looks good for you, and that you enjoy it for the rest of your life, as it will be there for the duration

I have wanted the same tat since I was 7-8 years old which was when I make "the promise" I said if I still wanted the same tat in the same place when I was 25 I would get it, and they said if I waited that they wouldn't give me any crap about it.

I still want the same tat in the same place, but hubby wouldn't like it, so I am going to get something else, although it could take me another 5 years to decide what.

You do know by posting this much you are required by law to tell us what tattoo you wanted and where, right?

And compromise with hubby by agreeing to get a "Property of Mr. Smunkee" tattoo on your ass ;)

on my hip right about where my jeans rest a spider. hubby is deathly afraid of them though and he is scared he might wake up in the middle of the night and see it half asleep and freak out.

I offered that to him (well, something similar) and he said if he died and I got remarried that it might be hard on 'new hubby' and trickle down into tension in the family and it would suck for the kids

I tried to explain that I wouldn't marry someone so stupid, but he is convinced that I will..........

Good reason not to get it, he might try to squish it in his semi-conscious state. Which would be a not so nice way to be woken up.

The other option would be to wear pyjamas ;)
