It's in three more days (Wednesday) and I'm definitely going to crank one out this month. Last time I tried, I only heard about it halfway through, and only got about a third of the way before giving up. This time there will be no surrender.

nothing can be prewritten, and you have to get an average of 2,500 words in a day to make it happen.

I'm doing a sci-fi in a setting with medium tech (No transporters, replicators, etc) and an all alien cast (trying to get away from the human-centrism in scifi, and it lets me make my aliens a bit more individual, rather than just a member of their species.)

Is anyone else participating, and what are your ideas for a novel?

I might participate. Don't know what I'd write about.

it sounds interesting. never entered one before, but new things are fun. hmm. if i did, it would be on an assasin.

I'm going to fail at least one essay because of this.

At the moment, I have two characters: one a soldier in the 13th century, the other a modern-day descendant of his. The storyline will connect the two genealogically.

Sci-Fi is always fun, I would have an idea but this would mean to put the story, I am writing now on hold :/ Can't decide!

Hadisveja is a story about hackers in a weird economy and a girl getting sucked into the scene.

The other idea, is difficult to explain... a Sci-fi in which there are 2 different empires on earth, which after a nearly-war ceased all contact to each other. Then after a ship-wreck, one person is washed on the shore of the other empire.

Hm...perhaps this month having that designation might motivate me to write (somewhere other than on here).

You have to get an average of 1667.75 words a day if you can write everyday, I can't write everyday so I shoot for 3K a day.

This is my second year, I already have my story heavily outlined, research done, and am just waiting until Wednesday to get started. My local group is getting together Tuesday night for a "write-in" and we are all starting at midnight.

So fun.

Hah, I tried looking for an age limitation but found none; I assume now there is none?

I won't be thinking about joining (this year) as it's insane considering my uni workload ATM, but I like the idea.. I even found a single person taking part this year from my little German town..

I didn't last year because of my full course load, but, this year I'm in. I can easily crank out that much; I just have to picture a character I can do countless evil things to and watch as the mayhem unfolds.
Myralon
30-10-2006, 19:36
Yep, I'm doing it.

Did it last year.

Decided to go a bit nuts about it this year.

I write a lot (read = way too much) and so my goal is actually 150k words, and I think I have a good chance of getting there.

i dont have much of an attention span to write a novel. but i have some ideas. some actuallly trying to get done.
one about a facist society that works.
a comedy about irelnad turning to a uber liberal socialist country.
musical about the jews taking over the world.
comedy about a black person in ireland joining a neo-nazi basketball team.

I don't have time. I'm currently writing a novel-length story (it's currently 68,244 words long), but I couldn't have written it in only a month, and I'm still focusing on writing my current story, in addition to school work.

you know why there is a great deal of human centrism?

because people oddly enough relate to humans. thats what people like is characters they can in some way relate to through fantasy or real. im not saying its a bad idea, actually sounds kind of cool. just saying its going to be a really tough task to complete. i wish the best of luck to you.

I think a story about aliens would be interesting, and besides you would relate to them at some point if the characters are realistic enough.

That was kind of the whole point. Of course, getting rid of humans allows me to make the aliens feel a lot less alien without making them star trek aliens (humans with weird foreheads)

In most stories, aliens have been mostly background, and otherwise little more than an example of their race. I felt the best way to make my aliens real characters, with real characterization, was to make there be no alternative.

it's 10:15pm on day 2, I am sitting at 3500 words exactly. Pretty good since I worked 10 hours today and then had a mental breakdown this afternoon over a stupid iron-on T-shirt project.

I can't write much tomorrow, but then again I thought that today and I churned out over 1500 words.

I am pretty sure I will pick up 12-15K this weekend. ;)

mine isn't either, but I think since hubby is driving I can blog some of my novel on my PDA and upload it to my google docs when we get close to the Wi-Fi that seems to be about every 4 blocks around here....I can't really do that while driving, I can dictate to my kid, but she does't type as fast as I talk. LOL (not that I have done that with this NaNo yet, I usually let her write emails and posts for me.)

Yea, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. Seeing that I've already written over 3000 words so far. It's the story (the psudo-autiobiography in fact) of Amber Red-Brown, her life as a werepenguin and her rise through the political insanity that is well based on a chain of inspired bys that you should probably be able to recreate on your own.

I tend to use limited third person, it's easier for me that way. I have to go to sleep soon I had a conversation with one of my characters, I typed the whole thing and near the end I was like "why am I typing what I am thinking?" only I typed that too.....I think I might need some sleep.

I started with a somewhat messed-up concept of technically writing in the first person, present; only that this me-narrator basically tells the story by telling us about what this other character does and speculating about her thoughts/feelings etc. It's a rather.. unusua mix of frist and third person narrator, but I think I'm going to stick with it alright.

last year I did each chapter from a different person's pov, it was very interesting, it was first person-ish since within the chapter you would only know what the one was thinking, but I would switch it up a lot within the book. I don't know what the heck I was thinking. LOL

Maybe you fail at that (the bolded part)? Umm.. make and print a short hand-out - FAQ and just distribute that when trying to write in public. Alternatively, just tape said handout to the lid of your laptop. *nods*

Yeah, look, with an average post-length of, say, 15 words (and that's a reasonably number for shortish spammy posts ;] ), and a post-count of 15,500, you're at 232,500 words already- that's 9 novels, give or take a few words. Scary, eh? :P

P.S. I duck whenever I want to! *ducks*

So fun.

Grave and I are writing a novel together. We're not inspired by this, but it's cool to know so many people are doing this. What a great project. Since there's two of us we'll go for 100,000.

A leftie! Yay!

It's a comedy about two guys who trip (the fall down trip, not the whacked out on drugs trip) outside the universe.

The following bears no resemblance to how these events actually happened. At times, if I could use that word, Mike and I were among the timeless with no real shape at all. We had no location on the lines of any dimension. To tell it as it happened would cause your left eyeball to pop out of the socket. And after the first three tellings, I figured I better tell it differently or become an optician. So I adjusted it to give it a sense of order, to turn it into a story rather than the garbled mess that happens when one tries to take events with no time or place and convey them to beings that need their stories to have both.

I’ll tell what I remember and I’ll let Mike tell what he remembers and is willing to share. I can’t promise it will be enlightening or even entertaining. But I promise it will be true except for the places where no truth exists or where certain liberties were necessary to deal with that whole eyeball popping thing. Oh, and, to be fair, I smelled much worse at times than is apparent when reading the story. For that, I offer my humblest apologies to Mike.

Grave is a much better writer, but I don't want to post his stuff without his permission.

Done and done. I'll contact GnI right now so we can start working on it.

And you'll like the premise even if it turns out we handle it badly. Our 'heroes' are going to meet God. You have to think a book written about the absolute truth of the universe by an Atheist and a Christian is going to have some interesting ways of explaining things.

yeah, it's a very dialogue driven story, I hate that because it kills my wordcount but Inez's incoherent rants seem to make up for it.

My husband has been reading my novel as I add to it and he said it's "dark and twisty" (he stole that from Grey's Anatomy whether he admits it or not) but there are parts when he is laughing so hard he almost falls off the bed, I don't know if it's good for a book like mine to have those parts, but he says it's important or people would get bogged down between the backwater mental institution, the serial killer, the shady doctor, the evil nurse, and the sociopath who likes to annoy the innocent insane heroine of the story.

Ah, I have a plot and all... I rather enjoy my storyline.. it's just I don't think I can extend it to the necessary 50,000. It looks like it might fizzle out on its own before then, probably around 38,000 like I did last year.

Haha, congrats. Last year's NaNo fizzled out at about 38,000... before I finished it, like I said, at about 75,000. It's a satire about publishing based heavily on an experience I had with literary agents. I'm in the revision process of the story now and will be sending it out, hopefully to get published. I did not have a friendly time when I tried to get an earlier novel published.

This year's submission takes an internet craze and spins it around a bit.

As a compromise between the desire to frustrate you and the desire to please such an avid reader, I have excerpted a section involving one nubile young naked woman talking about sex and engaging in intense personal activity with an alien male.

^_^ It is, of course, completely non-pornographic, and is not illustrated. Check it out, you should know my screenname. I daresay it's not half-bad, although I'm going to have to go over everything with a fine toothed comb in NaNoEdMo.

LOL she was praying through the rosary this morning, it was hilarious....I think that most people don't get where I am going with that character, but it's pretty typical for people to gloss over and fail to understand the point of my novels. I got a call back from an editor on last year's a few days ago, she said it was very deep and very shallow at the same time and she couldn't figure out if she was reading stuff into the manuscript, so we ended up talking about my book for about an hour.......she ended the call saying "you are either very intelligent or slightly insane" to which I replied "can't I be both?"

:D I think the best literature SHOULD be both deep and shallow at the same time. Half of the 'text' is no creation of the author, after all - but the relationship between author and reader. You get out of it what you put in.

The only risk with the Inez character, I think, is that a lot of people are lazy readers. If you make them work for it, they'll either skip the whole section, or they'll skim it one time. I blame Hollywood, with it's 'story-telling-for-dummies' approach to the audience. :(

Right now "cat" is being used as the generic term for one variety of alien. "Dog" and "rabbit" are the other two generic terms. I'll figure out exactly what to do with it during NaNoEdMo. (I'll probably also re-sequence the novel a bit.)

This is actually about 40 pages in right now, and everything that Katie describes in that paragraph has already happened for someone reading straight through, but I do start in the thick of things and go in both directions chronologically through a combination of description, recounting, and narration. Chronologically speaking, Katie's just about up to where the novel starts with Joseph and the cyborg, only on a different thread for the moment.

Gravy, if you go back to writing your novel and go line up a publisher after it's done, Santa Max might just come to down and stuff your stocking with a foreword. So get back to work before J. starts really cracking the whip on you.

Oy... the pressure mounts, and it looks like the Hand of Mod and even 'higher powers' are bearing down upon me. Plus, the enticing prospect... I mean, terrifying concept... of being whipped to within an inch of my life by Jojo. :D

You have to admit that this idea has real potential if we can just find a way to get it on paper. Right now we know the story line itself even with an ending (which is where I always fall down). I have excellent ideas of where to take the story for the plot to flesh out. You have some great ideas of how these places should appear in order to get the proper amount of depth to the story. You have some excellent twists and turns to keep it interesting. It really seems like we have everything but words and you know where those come from.

Personally, I think Bowie singing tips the balance. "The Last Unicorn" is a good third choice... and another 'deep-as-you-want-to-look' one.

And, yes - I stole baby boy's breakfast. He seemed quite happy to share. :)

(Here is a picture of the breakfast I was 'half-inching'... there's another of those little England phrases... http://www.shopnatural.com/product/12419.jpg)

Just for you - here's a little of the pre-edit flavour text from the 'project':

As though walking backwards away from a window, Mike watched the sun-filled airport recede and fade. Suddenly, the world was just one wall in a big, dark room. A picture on a wall. A postage stamp. A dot in the distance... and... nothing. The last traces of the sunlight bathing the city gone, no more thn a memory.

A feeling of wightlessnes. No - not weightless, more like... falling. But, falling so slowly. Drifting down like snow, a gentle descent. Almost hypnotic. No sense of surprise, yet. No panic, and no shock. It was almost like a dream.

Thinking about it, Mike decided this 'dream' idea was the most likely explanation. Some dreamstate... some imagining, or confusion. The alternative was that he and Eric had somehow tripped over the edges of reality, and were falling in a timeless, spaceless void. That was a good point... the thought of Eric provided a kind of anchor. It might not be much, but if he could just work out where Eric was, he'd have some kind of a reference point... one small reference point, in a vast confusion..

Looking around, he spotted Eric lying face down, just an armslength away. Face down... lying. There was another reference point. If Eric was lying, he must be lying on something.

So.

So... the blackness around him must actually be two blacknesses - a blackness above, and a blackness below. In fact - he could almost resolve the difference. A black 'sky', devoid of features, and a glassy black ground beneath them.

He reached towards his motionless friend.

"Eric... you're really not going to believe this..."

Yeah, I must/should have put that in the past tense, too (in case I didn'); if it's unbecoming of a vegetarian to eat things that formerly had bowel movements, it's even more unbecoming of them to eat something that smiles at them.

I tried that vegetarian thing once... I really did. But the argument of 'bacon' was just too overwhelming. :)

My philosphy now is closer to "vegetables are great... for food to EAT".

Nonetheless, the idea of food that smiles back is somewhat unnerving.

'Half-inch' is derived from 'pinch', which is used as a phrase for taking or stealing. Not sure how common 'pinch' is... even less sure how common 'half-inch' is. Could just be an East-End-of-London thing. :)

Oooooh! Wordy object! [I have just been informed by my friend that 'wordy' has a negative connotatio or even definition to it. I refuse to believe such militant propaganda and herewith proclaim it to mean nothing else than "consiting of, or relating to, words".
I'm so honored. If you would now excuse me while I haul this one back into my den to safe-store it for future unforeseeable excerpt draughts?

Eww, bacon.

Nonetheless, the idea of food that smiles back is somewhat unnerving.
Which is why I cannot figure out for the life of me how people can eat whole fish, you know, with the head on and all, or those piglets with the head and stuff all 'intact'.

No, what this is actually all about is procrastinating under the holy veil of socializing with other NSers under the poor disguise of discussing alternative plots.. or something.. and there's chocolate chip cookies!

..oh, you meant NaNoWriMo, not the thread. Uh, well.

No, that is all about writing your novel during the allotted time slot and motivating yourself by updating and comparing your wordcount and quick glances at the deadline... you can share excerpts on your profile (like Smunkee and TJHairball apparently did), and there's sharing at the live meetings as far as I understand it (nobody meets in sparsely WriMo-populated Germany, at least not around here), and many people contact publishers around the possibiities of NaNoWriMo contacts etc. - but no, at the very website itself you don't post your (entire) novels. It's a place to get you started and help you through actually doing it, but not the place to put it up at in the end.

I am so behind it's pathetic, I think I wrote like 300 words yesterday (if that).

I have way too much to do this weekend to write....like an uber important test Saturday....that I think I am going to fail, that I can't re-take, that I know I am going to fail.

:(

I am hoping to pick up a few thousand words today........my story is getting too far ahead of itself so it will probably mostly be fluff........that's okay, I can edit out all the crap later, or maybe I will fluff it up with useful to the plot crap.

Oh, btw, this mega big outline I did in December? it's useless.

Well - if the test is so important.. shouldn't you be focusing on that? I mean - NaNoWriMo is nice, but 'real' world' issues just might have to intrude over wordcount, no?

Not that I'm trying to discourage you - I think when you 'hit your stride' again after this little burst of excitement, you can put yourself back on track. In the meantime - you can use the 'downtime' to explore some other ideas in your head, without committing yourslf to them on the page. That way - if you try three ideas in your head, and drop two... your word count doesn't jump up and down, but you do have fresh concepts when you hit the books later.

But then, if you cram... might you not scrape by?

If you really have decided 'screw the test', then wave it byebye now and stop worrying. Spend your time instead on some new twist for your story... maybe a character who is sure the building is empty, and is petrified that he/she keeps getting moved around and manhandled by ghosts/aliens...

Ah no, that's not 'funny', that's a given. Thread-srtarters per definition are the procrastinators; why else would you start a thread in NSG for? ;P

Positive encouragement..umm,you've still got 20 days left to catch up at your own pace; your lower wordcount most probably means that you still ahve lots of room left to have your characters go all kind of different way, while at 17k things are pretty defined already (or so they say.. mine is still swinging all kinds of ways) so you are in creative advantage, and you'll ahve the weekend now to really hit the eyboard and catch up some?

Not true... unless you make it so. I realise that the NaNoWriMo deadline is a third of the way towards us, but the 'month' is fairly arbitrary, as is the wordcount.

They could have said 100,000 words in a month, and some people would still do it - you just have to pop out enough words in the time that remains.

Now - if you only have two days left, and 50,000 words to write... that might be a tall order. :)

I'm not going to make it. I know I'm not. I have other writing projects to deal with and this one...just isn't flying as high as I thought the storyline would. I'm more than perfectly able to write a fifty thousand page novel--that's nothing to me. I've more than doubled that in one story. It's just...I don't feel like writing this. It's...not interesting..this year.. or something. I don't know. I need to pull more all nighters, I suspect. My writing comes more freely when I have no sleep whatsoever.

I don't know. I need to pull more all nighters, I suspect. My writing comes more freely when I have no sleep whatsoever.

Decide, now; is it because you feel you will not be able to (because of some sort of block or time constraints or whatev), or because you don't feel like it / don't want to? You're giving mixed messages here.

If it is the former, then I side with Uncle Gravy and say that nothing ain't decided yet and you just gotta keep on trying- the biggest part of it, after all, is really having tried it and crossed that threshold of sanity that'd usually keep you from things like this. If you honestly kept trying and putting a real effort into it and end up 30k, I think you've een more of a NaNoWriMo than the one who half-heartedly managed to churn out 50k in 20 days and never had to push themselves beyond that sanity level.

If it is the latter, then, well, I suggest trying beyond the second-week milestone, and then really give it up if it doesn't get better. This si not exactly the kind of thing that gets you anywhere if you're only trying half-assedly.

I may get a bit more done tonight, but I thought I'd upload my word-count while it was still the 11th to be honest about it.

Being the nighthawk I am (at least in Anglo-Saxon languages; in German, I'm still a nightowl ), that happens to me a lot, that I forget to upload in the middle of it and then end up with a meager few hundred words for the one day when I had a coupleof minutes somehwere, and the bulk is counted towards the next day.. so my day-to-day wordcount is slightly skewed.

Yahoo, made the 20k! Will be off to celebrate and play funny games with flatmates now :]

Never mind that I didn't do a single scrap for uni the whole weekend. All is good.

I wouldn't have imagined I'd be procrastinator enough to search YouTube for NaNoWriMo (oh who am I kidding), but this is the absolutely coolest thing.

Check out the one and only NaNoWriMo ad! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQo4AcfrsIo)

And, umm, do I see someone posting a sort of video blog of themselves writing their NaNo? :eep:

still sitting here under 15K :(

I should pick up some writing later in the week, but I keep thinking back to 'the test' overthinking my answers to questions trying to figure out if I got them wrong or not.....

I hate myself sometimes.

Aww now, that's okay. You'll have caught me, for one, soon again as I have imposed a writing ban on myself until I get all of this uni work which accumulated for nearly two weeks done. Coveniently, this happens as I have a major plot problem.. heh.

Oh, and get your adult side out again and convince yourself that there's nothing you can do now in hindsight and stop mulling it over. That's an order, ma'am. :]

Writing will help you move away from reviewing the test problems in your mind.

Just crossed the 20K line. I'm finding that when I have trouble moving Joseph forward, it's easy to talk about Katie, and when Katie gets stuck, it's easy to just go back to Joseph.

I don't know what I would do if I had been trying to write this from a single perspective.

Listen to the wise man, because his words are..uh.. wise? ;P

Probably get stuck in plot morasses, procrastination hysteria and devastation like us ordinary people ;P

I wrote an entire children's story this morning. It took me about fifteen minutes. That'll teach my girlfriend not to challenge me.

How is everyone doing in the quest to get to a novel?

between work, sick kids, sick husband, broken laptop (I fixed it myself....GO ME! of course I also broke it myself.... shame)

I haven't written much. If my babysitter doesn't end up in the hospital I might get some work done Saturday. Tonight after dinner hubby and I are going to work on our novels for a while, if we don't get bored and decide to go to a movie. LOL

Uh. Help. Too bad YouTube doesn't have the CTD's 'Overachiever' or I'd have linked you..

I'm fine-ish; lagging about 2k behind because I took 2 days off, but I'm working on it :] I think both my coherence and my continuity made a dash for it after around page 11, but we manage quite alright without them ;P

How's the duo coming along?

It's now halfway through the month. Time's a-ticking.

I'm finding I'm starting to get behind a bit. It's not that I've run out of plot - it's that I've started to get hooked back in to my old time-wasting habits, preventing me from working on my novel.

Yeah, I caught up some yesterday, using the free time on my hand after being kicked out of a class, but I'll probably not get to write any more than a thousand or so words this weekend.. my ass starts to seriously be in trouble.

P.S. Smunkee, I only cursored over the other thread, whatever it is, hope you get well soon :]

It hasn't been. The storms last week killed my DSL connection, and when they finally repaired it, it turned out it had also fried my DSL modem.

I'm back online now, but I haven't had any time to do anything. :(

Umm, update: it's the evening of the 20th for me, and I'm at 26.6 so far.. I never managed to write more than an hour this weekend, and I have the sinking feeling it's not going to be much more today.. uh.

Aww, damn. Off you go now, then, to work some more on it! *gently shooes UG out of the thread and into the arms of the project*

Thanks. I'm doing my best here, and I'm more than determined to make it this year, but I still need to fill in the last of my four fill-in-the-blanks grammar sheets on the progressive and conditional (I feel so 5th grade here, but that's what you get for trying to become an English teacher) and I fear that today..

.. but I just received an email that one of my classes tomorrow is cancelled, so there's hope. Is what I say. Now.

It's 8 pm now and my progress report says
Current word count: 26676 (53.35 %) with 10 days left, with current pace, expected to finish in 18 days.
I shall now set out to change that depressing number- talk to you again at midnight.

There's a minimum word count? Shit! I thought it was something much different. I've already finished my book and it's only about 16,000 words.

There's only 6 days left to this gig; when will it repeat so that I may catch it from the beginning? Is it safe to assume that this is an annual event that will happen next year at this time?

the official official National Novel Writing month is in November of each year, but if you go register and get on the forums you will find people who write a novel every month. There is a group starting one again in December.
