well i've gone through something of a political conversion recently myself... i'm a bit scared to take the test again :p (my score on there is a couple of months old)
i kinda agree with potaria now (from what i read of his explaination) in that i could support capitalism and communism... and i kinda do. what i mean is either is 'just' (any outcome is just - communism or capitalism) as long as the starting point is fair. of course there are other considerations to that (government needs to steer environmental and social policy, welfare and positive rights to health, education, shelter and the basics of life are still a must... so i'm still good and leftie!), but basically what i'm saying is my support for communism, exclusively, has waned in favour of policies and a governmental structure that will enable true meritocracy. as potaria said, people are not born equal, both in socioeconomic senses and talents and gifts etc. one can't legislate against the latter (as that would indeed be punishing the talented for something they had no control over recieving, which is just as bad as people having no choice in being born disadvantaged), but government can do things to ensure the former is equalled. therefore, equality of opportunity is what i support and prioritise these days, rather than only equality of outcome (as per communism).

anyway, i'll stop ranting now...

(edit: unfortunately that isn't something the political compass would take into account so.... i don't know where that leaves me :p )
I really shouldn't reply to this with my brain still switched off but hey, just try and make me stop. :p

What throws me a bit about that is that I've never even been close to communist to begin with and yet I score that far on the left.
Remember during the last NS elections when I said I couldn't honestly vote for the UDCP but rather voted Social Democrat instead? Now, don't get me wrong, I'm sure that for example our very own dear Kilobugya is one of the most socially and politically responsible people you'd find anywhere (not to mention politically active, immeasurably more so than I am) so I certainly am not saying that communism is bad in any way. It's just not for me - I like a lot of the basic tenets in theory, but I just can't see most of it work in real life.

As I said further upthread, I'd describe myself as a green, leftist, social democrat. Or tree hugging, bleeding heart liberal, for our American friends. ;)

But I certainly did answer all the questions truthfully. So who says you'd automatically end up way over there on the other end of the scale like ol' Pot? :p

Or am I just suffering from some political split-personality myself? o.O

No. Promoting inequality based on morally arbitrary things like the amount of talent someone is born with is not avoiding the punishment of the talented, it is, rather, the punishment of those who are not born as talented.

The notion of a "natural aristocracy" is as vile as the notion of any kind of aristocracy.

I'll go with Rawls on this one - inequalities based on natural talent are only justified insofar as they benefit those disadvantaged in that respect as well as those privileged.
that's what i thought, and i totally agreed with Rawls... and in fact, you're right on the mark as to where most of this new thinking comes from. i agree with Rawls for the most part up until he starts talking about natural talents being comparible with the artificial constructs of social and economic standing. this is simply not the case, and legislating over this would be at least ethically similar to discriminating against tall people, or fat people.... or black people, for example. you get the picture? socioeconomic considerations are one thing, but natural things are another, and just as a person born into a poor family should not be 'punished' for an outcome they had no possible choice in, so should a talented artist not be punished or legislated against for happening to be born with a talent. the veil of ignorance works both ways in some cases...

anyway, i'm not promoting a "natural aristocracy" at all. what i'm saying is that what is most important in any consideration of equality is equality of opportunity. that is, ensuring (somehow) that all men are indeed born equal and have the same opportunities in terms of not only, say, access to eduction, but the exact same level of education for all so none are advantaged over others. ditto inheriting assets (i would abolish).

in this way, in theory any distribution is 'just' (in terms of a veil of ignorance)... but not necessarily 'fair'. this is why socialised economic policies would still need to be very much in effect to ensure a more fair (or equal) distribution of outcome.

so i am not at all promoting a "natural aristocracy", only that the first consideration for any politicised theory of equality should consider equality of opportunity first, after which all else is still important but secondary.

i'm not sure... the thing is i could be either, depending on how i look at things. one way, IF the world were a meritocracy and there were already a true equality of opportunity for all, then i would probably end up really more centrist or even ( ) right-wing. actually, that's doubtful as, as i've said, even then (with all that follows being philisophically "just") i would still very much support welfare, free education, healthcare, positive rights, etc... so i'd probably end up more 'liberal'

if i look at it the other way, in terms of what i believe should be in the world as it stands as a corrupted pseudo-meritocracy, my views aren't represented in the questions IIRC, so... i don't know where i would end up.

if i keep true to what i do still believe, in that human nature is indeed malleable and in time more altruistic ways of life will be possible, then i'd support communism as per usual. i agree with you that it can't work in real life.... yet. in 200 years, who knows? (and yes, i certainly agree with what you say about our friend kilobuggy :))

see... i'm just not quite sure what's going on here :p
(i was tasked with overseeing the next election btw, and i said i would do it about nowish, but i have an important website to finish this week that takes priority. however, next week i should have some time to organise it :) i'll be entering a new party with my newfound thoughts...)

I am a minarchist, yet I support government action in the areas you mentioned...if the private market cannot provide there, that is. I'd never support communism as I am not an egalitarian. I am an elitist through and through. What I'd support is Hayek's, Roepke's and Friedman's versions of minarchism, which include a safety net and focus on formal equality and the natural aristocracy.

My support for a safety net does not stem from any genuine consideration for the poor or genetically inferior...I simply realise that not to give them the basics would be a cause for rebellion. They must be sated and have equal opportunity.

As for my results, they haven't changed.

What were yours PM?
well at least you support positive rights... that's rare for someone on the right of the political spectrum, in my experience :p

and my results are same as before as i'm too scared to retake the test :p

And no one is proposing punishing the talented artist. Not Rawls, and not me. The question is whether the talented artist should be rewarded more than, say, the janitor solely because she was born with more talents than the janitor. Doing so would be equivalent to rewarding someone because she was born white instead of black, or blond-haired instead of brown-haired, etc.

If society values art, and it benefits society as a whole to encourage its production by paying the talented artist more, of course you could do it. But you would do it only if it would benefit society as a whole - not simply because the talented artist is talented.

"Equality in opportunity," at least when interpreted without regard for differences in talents, would result in such inequalities solely on the basis of natural talent. People are unequal in talents, but they are fundamentally equal in moral worth; as such, basing decisions on a person's talent is illegitimate.

anyway, i'm not promoting a "natural aristocracy" at all. what i'm saying is that what is most important in any consideration of equality is equality of opportunity. that is, ensuring (somehow) that all men are indeed born equal and have the same opportunities in terms of not only, say, access to eduction, but the exact same level of education for all so none are advantaged over others. ditto inheriting assets (i would abolish).

I agree on those points.

in this way, in theory any distribution is 'just' (in terms of a veil of ignorance)... but not necessarily 'fair'.

Why is it "just" in terms of the veil of ignorance? Anyone behind the veil of ignorance would have to consider the possibility of being an incompetent idiot in the resulting society, and would try to guarantee her own welfare even under such circumstances.

this is why socialised economic policies would still need to be very much in effect to ensure a more fair (or equal) distribution of outcome.

They would need to be in effect to ensure equality of opportunity anyway.

so i am not at all promoting a "natural aristocracy", only that the first consideration for any politicised theory of equality should consider equality of opportunity first, after which all else is still important but secondary.

I can accept the notion of "equality of opportunity" - but only when the unequal rewards permitted on that principle are distributed on the basis of morally relevant factors, like, say, the quantity of effort a person contributes to society. On this point I disagree with Rawls - there is no notion of merit in his system, and that is one of its biggest flaws.

I'm a libertarian, so it's not too surprising. I do have fascist predilections, but I give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they are not utter and complete morons, hence I am minarchist. Go on, take the test. ;)

I'm sorry to say this, but comming from a technologically oriented family, there's no way I could possibly grant any accuracy to Wikipedia.

The heck does "a technologically oriented family" have to do with Wikipedia?

It really can't be trusted.

Wikipedia is a valuable source for informal debate and discussion, much as what we're doing right here. It is considered unacceptable for serious academic work for the reasons you cite, but under the conditions of a debate on an internet forum Wikipedia is to be considered acceptable, when subscription services are not readily available.

It is espescially valuable in situations with commonplace topics, such as the basics of socialism, or recipes for chocolate cake. This is because of the amount it is reviewed, not only by the general public, but because the wikipedia editors keep an eye on such tension capable topics.

A long while ago (before my time) there was a political compass graph for people of NS General, someone made one recently (within the last 8 months) but it didn't have many people on it, and really didn't get off the ground.

I thought it would be neat to do another, and since I have zero technical knowledge I got help from Pure Metal.

Take the test here. (http://www.politicalcompass.org)

You can post your results in the thred if you want, but unless you fill in the form at the link above I really can't guarantee you will make the graph, Pure Metal has been so nice as to make this workable for a girl like me, and really I am too lazy to wade through posts.

Mods- I will come back and bump this a few times, I will try not to make excessive bumps but I want everyone to get a chance to be on the graph, thanks.

I have found that this test leaves out some issues, and thereby is not entirely accurate.
It also fails in understanding other parts of certain issues as well. I feel that the test inaccurately represents certain viewpoints. My favorite example is the "Are businessmen more important to society than artists" question. I find that statement ridiculous. An excellent artist is more important than a shoddy businessman, and vice-versa. Neither is more important. If they're excellent, then they're important, if they aren't, then they aren't. After all, Richard Halley was a key person in the valley in Atlas Shrugged.

All the same, it's probably the most thorough test available for quick, internetty use.

Every time I take this damn thing, I creep a little closer to the center. More so on the social stuff this time, but economics too. The trick, of course, is determining whether that reflects me losing my ideological edge and turning into a cranky old conservative (bad, especially since I'm only 17...too young!), or if it reflects a better understanding of more complex issues. I'm voting for the latter.

Love the compass and I do tests on there every two months or so. Find it interesting as I'm studying politics. It is, however, flawed. Most people answer it in the ideal way. You answer the questions as though you're listning to John Lennon's 'Imagine' - with a smile and a 'Yeah, thats a good idea'.

For example:

Land shouldn't be a commodity to be bought and sold.

Ideally I'd say, ''Absolutely - its a silly idea to trade land' and quickly click 'Strongly Agree'. However with further thought doing so would create anarchy and serious problems.

Also most people answer the class/nationality question by saying, 'Strong Agree - class divides us more'. Pure and simply (in my eyes) thats right. Around us in America, Germany, UK or Australia people are split up due to how much they earn. But clicking 'Strongly Agree' places a level headed person with the 'Marxists' as its a strong Marxist idea.

Basically if you come out as strong left wing and very Liberal don't be suprised - most people do. Its because I believe that psychologically we answer those questions as though we're creating a new and better world. So if you go and vote Libertarian or Democrat yet you're cast as a strong lefty don't get confused. No compass will tell you were you are placed - only you can.

Oh if you wondered I'm:

Economic minus 2.50
Social minus 1.75

If someone came up to me in the street and asked my political views I'd say centrist/ social-democrat/liberal/green. I think I'll turn thirty before I find a suitable ideology of really right on organisation to support my views.

Its because I believe that psychologically we answer those questions as though we're creating a new and better world. So if you go and vote Libertarian or Democrat yet you're cast as a strong lefty don't get confused. No compass will tell you were you are placed - only you can.

That is, of course, absolutely true.
And I really should have remembered all that before posting wondering about how come I'm so very far left. Not because I don't like it there - after all it is very much my political ideal/dream- but because it doesn't really reflect my "day to day" political sensibilities.

I'm so going to ace my Political Degree;)

But yes. I'd say most people unless they were hard on Republicans or straigh out Capitalists would say:

''Yeah! Land shouldnt be sold!''

Or

''Man, thinking about it...water shouldnt be bottled! Its a crazy idea!''

Or

''How much money you earn choose where you are in the US - not your colour''

Or

''Good point! Businesses shouldnt be allowed to make monopolys!''

Do so and you're a 'damned lefty'. When I first took the test I was minus eight economically. Yet I pledge support towards parties such as the Democrats and Liberal Democrats. Don't asnwer questions straight away. Think about them as though they were Bills you were bringing into law. If you're land was no longer owned by you and was avaliable to everyone...would that really be that great?

EDIT:

Challenge:

Take the test and try to come out as eight or more both economically and socially.

Is it possible that the compass is ever so slightly aimed at making you think you're a anarcho-syndalist?

Every time I take this damn thing, I creep a little closer to the center. More so on the social stuff this time, but economics too. The trick, of course, is determining whether that reflects me losing my ideological edge and turning into a cranky old conservative (bad, especially since I'm only 17...too young!), or if it reflects a better understanding of more complex issues. I'm voting for the latter.

The test is imperfect... it avoids issues such as term limits, government size, and imprisonment.

There seems to be a clustering of NSers in the minus-minus area, but I guess it kinda confirms the leftie nature of NSG. :)

I'm a centrist leftie.
