OK, we have had a bit of a break, but it is now less than 24 hours to kick off in the first quarter final.

The usual question - who will win and why.

For me - Germany by 1 (2 - 1) just because of the fan support. (And because I am in Brazil and have to diss the Argentines. :p )

I count a win in extra time as a win by whatever margin.

why do I keep seeing all these threads about water closets in different countries?

Because it is the international WC quality of service competition month. Why else? :p

The Germans are likely to win because their WC attendants have the biggest fan base.

Argentina will be able to control the midfield and Gremanys' centre halfs have hardly impressed during the tournament. Cant' see anything other than a goal fest for Argentina, 3-1 is my call.

It's a shame really because I was really looking forwards to an England - Germany final.

Argentina hopefully, although their performance against Mexico didn't exactly inspire confidence. So long as their defence holds firm (which it can), they'll win by 1.

My friend told me that a couple of hours ago the matchreport was posted on the FIFA site, Germany would win 2-1 (1-1 in regular time, with an own goal by Germany), and in the last minute of the additional time a Argentinian player would receive his second yellow card. The page was taken offline just a few minutes after it appeared.

look at my sig and guess. :)

i think it will be 3-2 germany, only allowing the fact that the german attack plays to the level of its defence inversely. if the d sucks, the o is great (costa rica). if the d is good, the o is mediocre at best (poland)

as i cant watch it live (anyone know if its streamed live video somewhere on the internet?), i'll be wearing my jersey to work and biting my nails while watching the gamecast on espn.

i wish i knew some german soccer chants/songs/whatever. living in the us kinda shuts out soccer.

So basically, you have to hope that your defence sucks and your attack is great, because if you play like you did against Poland you are going to get royally fucked over by Argentina.

Germany. They don't have to be scared anymore. They can stand up to any team in the world now.

Plus, it would be brutally cruel to see Germany, playing an awesome, exciting football completely new to the team eliminated now. Because that would surely cause the next coach to go back to the sort of England-football Germany was known for.

Klinsmann gave us our team back, and there has to be some poetic justice in the world.

And by the way - if they beat Argentina, they're gonna win it. There is no other team left in the competition that could stop them - not even Brazil.

Finds it funny that the German team is full of confidence, while the Argentines seem to be the one who act a bit cautious at the moment. They're even hoping that god will stand by them.

They lost to Brazil in the 2005 Confederation Cup.
And they lost to Italy 4:1 not too long after that. They also drew with Argentina 2:2 in that tournament.

And?

I think it's been made abundantly clear by now that this team is several levels better than the one we've seen in the preperation, of which the Confed Cup was just one part.

What about against Sweden? Defence and offence were both great.
Not really. The defence was good - but then for most of the match Sweden only had 10 men. The attack were good as well - 29 shots in total. But once you've taken away all the speculative efforts from Ballack, that's probably down to about 10.

Also - how did Germany concede a penalty? Because the defence was jittery when a Swedish player was tightly marked in their penalty area with his back to goal. That's not a great defence. If Argentina can get in among the defence - which they've shown they can do - theyll easily score 2 or 3.

Australia scored 31 against American Samoa in the qualifying for the 2002 World Cup. Most in one game at the World Cup finals is 10, I think, by Hungary against El Salvador. Not sure of the year, though. I think another team scored 10 in a World Cup match once as well, but I could be wrong.

You are making the mistake of correlating being in form and winning the World Cup. The two very rarely go together. Just ask the Dutch about that.

The World Cup is most often won by teams that just grind out the wins, rather than those that play spectacularly well. (There have been exceptions of course.) On this basis the favourites have to be England and Italy.

What about Argentina - sure the 6-0 thrashing of Serbia & Montenegro was hardly ground out, but the 2-1 (aet) win over Mexico and the 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast were ground out to an extent. Add to that the fact that they have more talent in their squad than either England or Italy, and they must be up there.

Or Germany - especially with home support behind them - will have a very good chance.

France haven't exactly set the world alight yet either, with a hard fought win over Togo along with draws against Switzerland and S. Korea.

Brazil aren't playing at their best, yet they're still comfortably into the quarter finals (admittedly after an easy group and the easiest match in the last 16).

In fact, the only two teams I'd write off now are Portugal and Ukraine. Ukraine aren't good enough to beat Italy, the winner of Germany/Argentina, and whoever they'll meet in the final, while Portugal may be good enough to beat England, but aren't good enough to beat the winner of Brazil/France, and certainly won't beat Germany or Argentina.

And Argentina do not play like they did against Serbia and Montenegro.

What they did to S&M didn't impress me. Germany would have done the same.

30-06-2006, 13:51
What about Argentina - [snip]

I was basing it purely on the repeated grinding out of wins. Argentina, Brazil and Germany have not exactly ground out all of their wins.

France is lucky. They met Spain who self destroyed as ever. I really do not see them getting past Brazil in any way - which is a pig for me as it means either England lose or I have to deal with an England vs Brazil match here.

Portugal are the dark horses, it depends if they can find favour with the referees or not. If they can, they may be unstoppable, if they can't then they are without a hope.

Ukraine have over achieved already, but it only needs one slip from Italy and they could be in another penalty shootout.

That leaves England and Italy, both of whom have been winning without being impressive - typical of World Cup winning teams.

To settle this, let's just take an average...

English language (http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=Germany&word2=Argentina): Germany (1.82bn), Argentina (589m).

If Argentina lose on PKs I hope they sack the coach. The substitutions he made were so negative. Until then, they were running rings round Germany.

the yellow for Argentine (diving!!!!!!!) . either he shouldn't have whistled it at all or he should have given penalty for Argentine. That was a clear faul by Germany.
