While speaking about WWII, it could make sense to recall that a physicist called Enrico Fermi gave probably the single most important contribution to discovering and controlling nuclear chain reactions. Other, bloodier, WWII issues are too serious to be "discussed" here.:(

I hope that our football team will not hurt again the feelings of the more sensitive part of the audience... maybe we will lose to Ukraine. Otherwise, we will yield to the brave German team, for the happiness of the uncorrupted couple Blatter - Beckenbauer.;)

By the way: in Italian there is no idiom like "it sucks" or the like. I don't know how Totti's gesture has been intepreted abroad, but it clearly (well, clearly for us) he is one of those players, fathers of newborn children, who cannot refrain from public celebration of their fatherhood. Childish enough, but no more than many others I have seen (first I remember was Bebeto).

Remember that most people only know their own cultural frame, and understand things by that. No matter what, they are mostly worldblind.

That didn't mean "it sucks", of course, even as I despise Italian football, by the style and by being genetically bred for that, I do not find Totti's attitude offending.

Otherwise, we will yield to the brave German team, for the happiness of the uncorrupted couple Blatter - Beckenbauer.;) Heh. :p I doubt Blatter is getting much loving these days, as busy as Beckenbauer is with flying from one game to the next by helicopter. How he found the time to get married a couple days ago is beyond me. Probably on the helipad.

But that's really interesting (not to mention a tiny bit weird, seen from outside <.<).

When I first saw it, I thought he was probably dedicating the goal to his new child, or something like that. Lots of sportstars do it in some form or another.

Wow. I'm way more out of the loop than I thought. I've never seen that before.

Meh, probably some Italian-Australian thing. How fitting for the topic. :p

I remember one of the Aussie cyclist doing a similar sort of thing after he won a stage of the Tour de France last year. He didn't suck his thumb, but made a sort of cradle with his arms and rocked them back & forth.

If that is the case i'd give it to you i just don't like the fact he did it after a BS penalty that one the game.

The way Italy won was bullshit. that was not a foul. the guy tripped. ive seen 1000 worse incidents in the 18 yard box this WC without the bat of an eye. it was a ridiculous dive and i hate seeing a game decided by that.

Yeah, it was a bullshit penalty, but the referee gave it. The result stands as Italy 1 - 0 Australia. Much as I hate to say it, it's time to accept it & move on.

i guess... really grudgingly - DAMNABLE FOOTBALL MATCH

we got waaay further than anyone expected, and proved a bunch of people wrong. [always good]
the socceroos went beyond everything we could have hoped for, just by proving they can play well against the world's best
and, on the brightside, the only way we can go from here is up! bring on 2010

Well it was only the World Cup... nothing like 'Under arm '81'. We get ours back though.

tee hee
the '81 incident
OUCH
i wasnt even alive then - thats much worse than the world cup, the aussies basically cheated
at least the italians did their business within the rules of the game [ie. the ref is right, even when he's wrong] Ours back? as in NZ? or Australia?

I thought the whole thing about the underarm incident, is that Greg Chappell didn't cheat. It was actually within the rules of (although arguably not within the spirit of) cricket at the time. I'm pretty sure they've subsequently changed the laws & underarm is now banned.

We apparently send over all our 'useless' people to bludge off of their welfare system but it isn't true.

True.
But no one wanted it to happen and Trevor felt like absolute shit.

so what's the penalty now?
either way, the italian bloke, whether overacting or not, at least didnt do something that bad in order to win
which im glad of. it could've been a whole lot worse

For anyone interested...Totti biting his thumb was about the single most offensive thing he could do and get away with it. It goes back a long way...the earliest reference i found (although i didn't look too hard) was in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which is set it (you guessed it) Italy. The Capulets are wanting to start a fight with the Montagues, so one of the Capulets says
"I will bite my thumb at them, which is disgrace to them if they bear it"
He bites his thumb at them, and this is what happens...
Abraham (Montague): Do you bite your thumb at us sir?
Gregory (Capulet): I do bite my thumb sir
A: Do you bite your thumb at us sir
G (to another Capulet): Is the law on our side if I say Ay?
Another Capulet: No
G: I do not bite my thumb at you sir but I do bite my thumb sir...

It goes on like this for a while, and then there is a huge fight...

So this is what Totti was doing, he was biting his thumb at us, which is a disgrace to us if we bear it...

Sorry, the quotes may be slightly wrong, i'm doing this from memory...
