To be labeled best or worst you have to decide on what criteria and stick to it for all the presidents. Frankly, it would take me awhile to study all the presidents and rank them.

Jefferson didn't care for him and his backers just managed to get him in instead of reelecting Adams. Besides, if I remember right, Jefferson was sore about not succeeding Washington to begin with so he never liked Adams if only for that.

One issue in paticular I'm enjoying watching on this thread is gay marriage. First of all, it's not a national issue. Marriage criteria is decided by the state government, not the national government. It's not Bush trying to ban gay marriage, and even if it was everybody is forgetting one big thing: One of America's biggest principal is majority rule, and seperation of church and state or not, the vast majority of American's believe in one religion or another, most of these religions clearly stating that marriage is between a man and a woman. Many people, however, are torn on this issue. It all depends on which state you live in.

That is a good point, especially with your reference to slavery earlier (I think it was yours, if not, I apologize).

However, regardless of whether it is right or wrong, it is still subject to the rule of majority. I personally agree with banning gay marriage (though I find that an ugly way to state my position), but I do agree with civil unions between gay couples. If you have civil unions, the issue of marriage is really no longer with the state as much as it is with the church. That's just my belief.

Also, let's keep in mind that marriage was created by these religions.
