I'm sure every music genre has it's redeeming qualities.

Country, for example, has it's crap. However, it also has artists that I can enjoy listening to such as Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams.

As for rap/hip-hop... I'll reserve my judgment. What I've heard, I mainly dislike, but I recognise that that is a very minor portion of the genre. I can't judge a genre based on the mainstream.

Aside from rap and country, has anyone mentioned the ultimate suckage that is Christian Rock?

Worst 3 Genres-
Rap - If you listen some of the lyrics are pretty interesting, but all that rap is is lyrics and a repetitive sound like drums or a similar instrument.
Christian Rock - Oh dear god this one was a toughy to place at second simply because while rap actually has lyrics going for it, Christian rock has "You make me move, Jesus"....
Country - It's been mentioned enough in this thread....

And the runner up for third worst being Indie Rock. It pisses me off so much >.<

I grew up with glam/glitter rock, punk rock, early elctronica, electro-pop and what they used to call "New Wave". Most of the music that I enjoy was made in the 70's and into the mid 80's. Aside from that I enjoy Classic 50's rock (Buddy Holley, Bo Didley etc...) and garage band rock.

As for rap, hiphop, so called 'danse music' and the like, I could never get into it. In truth, it may as well come from another planet because I just can't "connect" with it and I find it sounds horrible.

Kind of like musical 'sand paper' really....

id have to say that mainstream stuff is kinda sad, they dont play for themselfs anymore, only the fans. So they get tossed around like a bag of S***. Never knowing when they will have to change their style a bit. Overall, I hate anything that needs 20-40 girls in one music video shaking their asses to make money. (Yes I am talking about Rap, RnB, Hiphop)

House/rave/trance/whatever the hell you wanna call it.
Just don't call it music.
Time for a rewrite, I think. It is music, although I really, really don't like it. What I dislike more than the repetitiveness and mindlessness of the music, is the culture associated with it. It's just the way you've got to be hyper or on drugs to listen to it, and the rampant commercialism. This is music that doen't think. I get this with some rap and Hip-hop as well. Anyone else dislike a genre more because of the image behind it than the music itself?

Try IDM or possibly EBM. IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) is far superior to commercial dance, in that the people who make it use interesting loops and samples rather than taking the same 4/4 beat and repeating it in song after song. It's also very good to listen to when stoned. EBM (Electronic Body Music) is kind of a cross between industrial and IDM. I'd reccommend it if you already like industrial or metal.

Drum and Bass? Meh, some of it's interesting, more for the rhythm than the actual tune (I like percussion). The Prodigy I like, there is an originality to their work that I like - their later stuff for preference. Never heard of Pendulum.

I'm not too familiar with IDM (try looking it up on wiki, there'll be a band list there somewhere). The term EBM was coined by Front 242 when describing their music, so they'd probably be a good starting point. Try the albums Front by Front and Tyranny For You. Also, VNV Nation and Wumpscut. VNV Nation are fucking awesome actually - start with Advance & Follow (the re-issue (v2) is better than the original), then get Praise The Fallen. I only have one Wumpscut album, Wreath of Barbs, which is pretty good.

That's because it's their only album. They're one hell of an act, they've done some great remixes of Prodigy's stuff.

True C+C aren't strictly speaking 'metal' but thats where u find them in the shop. They are one of the very best bands around at the moment however you class them. Nine Inch Nails could also not be classed as metal but Korn? how are they not a metal band? and as for them killing off metal???? I don't know what planet you are on - Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach were very late 90s/early noughties. Nirvana were dead and gone by '94. Also, without Nirvana, it's doubtful that the mainstream gates would have opened for a large number of shite groups such as the above-mentioned. Kindof...there were a lot of other influences too (hendrix, blue cheer, etc.), but Black Sabbath was the main band that started it all. Zeppelin was an influence on later metal bands, but I personally believe they weren't really "metal" themselves (though there's no right or wrong as to what metal is)...they were basically just a blues-rock band in my opinion.

Assaults on guitars and drums? That's a bit unfair. Some of the best drummers in the world are metal drummers. It requires a hell of a lot of skill to drum some of the beats in metal.

And I find that lyrics don't matter so much with metal (not always, but as a generalisation). It's more the sound of the voice rather than what is actually being sung that is what matters.

This is not sarcasm. Metal, and ALL of it's clones, along with bad rap, and bad pop, are the worst music genres ever. Period. But not end of disssion!

....

What's a disssion?

Good grief. The only thing worse than some of the bands being mentioned now that this thread has degenerated is the chronically lame attempt to classify them. Who cares? Like what you like and get on with life.

Though in the end without that sort of discussion what worth is this thread? (even for entertainment value) ?

I suppose you're right.

But man, "neo-death-christian-emo-reggae-metal" can't be far behind, can it?

agreed. and while NIN is definately industrial metal, most true goths when asked what is the achetypal goth bandf they will say either Cradle of Filth or NIN. PLus NIN gets extra brownie pooints for bein jus Trent Reznor almost entirely on his lonesome

Neither NIN nor Cradle of Filth is goth.

Try Sisters of Mercy and Switchblade Symphony. ;)

to say that any one kind of music is intrinsically bad is not fair. and I know I've been saying certain genres are shit but that's just in my opinion. but the fact cant be avoided that different types of music require much more skill than others. I play bass and rap etc is piss easy from that point of view because it is jus the same simple riff over and over. same with most of the instruments that are used but for death metal for example, an enormous amout of technical skill is needed, by all involved, including the singer

True, but rap focuses more on the skill of the rapper than the beat. Metal is driven by the guitar and drums, so clearly more skill is going to be needed. So classifying by the level of skill required to play the music just doesn't work.

Rap is crap...takes absolutely no talent besides being able to talk fast...Every other genre atleast has to play instruments and sing, not speed-talk, sing. Rap is the worst by far.

So anything purely vocal is crap, then?

Well at least you have listened and not made your judgement based on a few songs.

Oh well.

Country sucks sh*t.

It's basically a bunch of hillbillys singing in an annoying voice "My dog got hit by a pickup truck and I only have an eighth-grade education" :upyours:
