First of all why all of these assumptions? I am Mexican born, American raised can speak both languages and a few other more fluently. I am also 3/4 WHITE mexican (yes there is such a thing) and my family while not affluent is pursuing education and is trying to embrace the American culture while keeping our own at home. I am proud to say that through hard work, I too will be of the middle class that you seem to think only American whites are part of. In three years I will have my Master's degree and teaching license in the state of Oregon. How's that for a dirty farmer wetback eh?

They also are not draining the social service resources that many seem to claim they are. Look at the statistics, you'll find that a lot of that is in proportion. Also, be aware of the fact of the purchasing power that they have. They spend millions of dollars in the American economy. They are paying for the war that America is waging. Many are fiercely patriotic...towards America or both countries.

I live in Utah, not a border state. There's way more kids in the schools who only speak spanish than we can handle. And their parents don't learn english either, making it impossible to communicte to the families.

and yeah, I was saying the earlier groups of immigrants did what they could to assimilate, even though at the time resident americans did not want them here. at least those groups tried to assimilate, and they have done so by now. I'm saying that today, lots of people don't bother to try to assimilate, as evidenced by my experience mentioned above in our schools.

What is so wrong about being multicultural? Can we not celebrate our own ethnic/religious/whatever holidays and still embrace America? There aren't, or at least shouldn't be any 'barriers' in schools. I at least was in a school where it was alright for a person to celebrate who they were regardless of race, origin, religion, culture, etc. and it did not encourage racism. In fact, this teaches children that it is wonderful to live in a place where there are so many different people getting along.

Wow, I finally made it to the end. I honestly thought I'd fall asleep before that happened. I'm actually disappointed that I didn't see this earlier as all of the points I would like to make have been said by someone else at this point. Nonetheless I'd like to say my piece.
With respect to the idea that all the illegal immigrants (read: Mexicans) should use their nationalistic fervor to improve their own country, i can only really laugh. Can you even imagine the result of such actions? Mexico is in a bad way economically and it isn't helped by the people who hold the economic power there. If there were to be a revolution for the improvement of life for the average Mexican citizen it would almost certainly take on tones of socialism if not outright communism.
With the amount of interest American business and government has in Mexico, I could hardly see them letting this happen. We make a good profit out of exploiting a weak economy so close to us, in fact part of that is in exploiting the cheap labor that people here were complaining about. In the interest of business and political influence, the Mexican citizens cannot be allowed to greatly improve their own country. What choice do many have then other than to illegally immigrate to the US, as legal immigration would probably take too long to immediately provide for their families.
Now the whole issue of legality. Are they breaking our law? Yes, however they are breaking it to come here and be productive and ultimately contribute to our economy by providing cheap labor. Does this hurt the American middle class? To this I would have to say no. They are doing unskilled labor that would still be paying people dirt cheap even if they weren't illegal. Middle class America is not going to be taking these jobs anyways. It does possess the ability to hurt the truly poor people in our society though. Is this regretable? Yes, but the mere possibility of it shouldn't create an atmosphere in which hard working people should be denied the right to make a living.

I have an idea, why don't we just close the United States off to everyone. We only let people that are citizens return. Foreigners can't complain, it is a privledge to come into the United States and start a better life, not a right. And after a few generations, everyone would start to have a slight resemblence, like every other country. we could also build a Great Wall of America if we wanted to, but it would have to be big enough so that the illegals couldn't catapult over it. Just my thought
