Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to another year of NFL Football. Today marks the first day of preseason football and that means we are nearing the beginning of the Regular Season.

I am hoping to post finals as they came in along with key injuries to major players for teams as they come in.

Today is the first game kicked off in Tokyo earlier today. Though the game is now officially over, it'll be broadcasted on ESPN at 6:00 PM ET. This game pits the Indianapolis Colts against the Atlanta Falcons. If anyone wants to know the final already, let me know :D

On Monday is the famous Hall of Fame Game and that will kick off in Canton, Ohio. The teams playing in this year's game is Chicago Bears and the Miami Dolphins.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?

I suppose this can tide me over for the next 3ish weeks until college football.

There's just something more entertaining about college football that I've yet to nail down.

I don't know, maybe it's that the athletes are more...athletes...and less businessmen, although really, any athlete seriously looking at a career in athletics needs to have a business mind starting around their junior year in high school...

But still, I just prefer college football.

I don't know, maybe I like it so much better simply because of the option play. Hard to say.

Hunter Kelly, 8, dies of Krabbe Disease
Aug. 6, 2005
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Hunter Kelly, whose battle with a fatal nervous system disease inspired his Hall of Fame father Jim Kelly's charitable works, died Friday morning. He was 8.

"Our prayers go to the family and kids," Jim Kelly's brother, Dan, told The Associated Press.

Born in 1997, Hunter Kelly was given no more than three years to live after being diagnosed with Krabbe Disease, an inherited degenerative disorder of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The disease hinders development of the myelin sheath, a fatty covering that protects the brain's nerve fibers.

In honor of their son, Jim Kelly and his wife, Jill, established the Hunter's Hope Foundation in 1997.

Well ladies and Gentlemen,

The first preseason game (though already completed! gotta love time delay) is at half time. The score? 20-14 Atlanta over Indianapolis.

Indianapolis jumped out to a 7-0 lead by a 2 yd touchdown from Manning to Troy Walters.

In the second, Atlanta got 2 field goals from Todd Peterson of 28 and 36 yds respectively. On Defense, Indianapolis's Kendyll Pope recovers a fumble and takes it 1 yard to make it a 14-6 Colt lead.

Then Atlanta got 2 unanswered touchdowns. Schaub throws a 6 yd touchdown pass to Brian Finneran and a 3 yd Touchdown pass to Fred McCrarry. This made it 20-14 and that is how the half ended.

St. Louis decided to go with Marc Bulger at quarterback and sent Warner to New York. It's more important for New York to develop Eli Manning as their franchise quarterback than to win right now, so they shipped him to Arizona.

Oh that's easy ... in college ball, they play to impress the scouts. You get more big plays and great drives and beautifully coordinated teamwork. It's a more pure version of the game, much like watching AAA minor league baseball.

Once they've got the 10 million dollar contract, then they don't have to try as hard.

I'd like to announce that with upset losses to serious postseason competitors Jets, Broncos (I think they're dreamers by now), Chargers, and sorta the Ravens (Not an upset, but a serious loss), the Jacksonville Jaguars are now officially big contenders. All they have to do is go 3-3 in their first 6 games and they're a lock.
Copiosa Scotia
13-09-2005, 06:06
Broncos (I think they're dreamers by now)

Don't count the Broncos out too soon. They've never won in Miami, and it shouldn't be a big surprise that they lost this week. It's Week 1, very few teams are really in shape yet, and no amount of practice in a dry city like Denver can truly prepare you to play in the Miami humidity.

Same with the Chargers. If they have Antonio Gates for the Dallas game, they score on their last drive and win. There's no doubt about that.

You gotta love how the Vikings can rationalize a huge mistake. They let Moss go and say they got rid of a huge distraction to the team. Apparently, Moss was distracting the Vikings from truly sucking.

I can't believe the Vikings have won three in a row. I didn't think they'd win three all year. And all this without Culpepper.

I know! It's awesome! It looks like our new defense is finally starting to meld together. There's another forum I post on, hang on a sec...

Some interesting statistics that go a long way to explaining the Minnesota Vikings of 2005

After 10 games the #1 rushing defense in the NFl is the San Diego Chargers who are allowing 78.1 yards rushing per game. The Houstan Texans are #32 allowing 160.6 yards per game.

In the first 5 games of the season the Vikings were allowing the opponent and average of 161.6 yards per game rushing good enough to take over dead last. On top of that the Vikings themselves in their 5 losses have averaged rushing the ball for 62 yards per game which by far dead last the #32 rushing offense in the league. Needless to say the Vikings were 1-4

In the last 5 games of the season the Minnesota Vikings defense has been STELLAR against the rush, they have allowed their opponents a mere 57.6 yards per game rushing which would put them by far as the #1 rushing defense in the NFL.

Excluding the Giants game which by anybodies account should not have been a win, in which the Vikings ran for a total of 12 yards, no team in the NFL has EVER won when rushing at least 20 times for less than 1 yard per carry, no team had ever returned a punt, kickoff and return for a TD so I think we can all agree that had nothing to do with the Viking offense, so other than that game in their 5 victories the Vikings have averaged rushing the ball for 144.8 yards per game which is good enough to be the #4 rushing offense in the NFL.

It's pretty obvious to me that when the Vikings run the ball successfully and stop the run successfully they are going to be very tough to beat.

Now, if only one of these recievers would step up, we'd have a good shot of catching up to those damn Bears!!! :)

The Refs, admittedly, spotted the Giants 15 and it wasn't good enough. Why? They suck. Why? People from New Yawk suck. Why? It's what they do best, and they play to their strengths.

Sure they could have stolen one, but they have a crappy coach. Sorry, he is an ass-clown. 11 false starts? You can't find a set of giant speakers, or a crowd of 60,000 to yell obscenities while you practice in New York? Bullshit^2. Holmgren had an oppotunity to put the game away earlier by stretching for a long field goal. But like everyone, he knew that the wind could be subtlely deceptive, and it was later in the evening, and it was cold. So he was smart, and even though the Seahawks defense wasn't playing as well as the Giants, he wisely punted for position. Ol' Tom, not so quick. That was the single worst play of the Giants half of the game from a pure desire to win standpoint, never mind they needed A LOT of help from the officials just to get there.

Seahawk is appearently a colloquial name for an Osprey, or a large sea hawk. The logo is more reminicent of the Thunderbird, who lives in a glacier in the Olympic mountains and comes out to cause 9+ earthquakes and tsunamis that kill thousands of Japanese people without warning.

If the Giants are lucky they may be able to hold on to that final NFC wild card spot so they can be humiliated by the Cowboys, but more likely the Bears or Panthers, which wouldn't be nearly as bitter or entertaining. What the Giants fans need to do is go back and read that Sportsline piece about how Feely was such an amazing free-agency aquisition. They can also take some comfort (pride?) in the fact that the third missed field goal almost certainly necessitated that Parcells change his depends undergarments.

No shit. That kept us out of the playoffs that year. We might get back in this year, though. at least 3 of our last 5 games are winnable, that should be wnough fo the wildcard. The best team in the NFC is Chicago, hands down. They are riding a 7 game winning streak and have just beat Carolina and Tampa Bay. Carolina as you may recall was picked to win the Super Bowl by ESPN and Tampa Bay is also playing for the number one spot in the NFC. Chicago is playing in a tougher division than Seattle (Ok, so the NFC North is #6 while the NFC West it #7, but hey, better is better.) and they do not have the luxury of playing Arizona and San Francisco twice. (Detroit is/was slightly better than both those teams.) The Bears, with a win over Atlanta, will have swept the NFC South which is arguably the toughest conference in the NFL. With Minnesota winning four straight, their defense now showing itself to be one of the best in the league, as they were picked to be before the season started, and Brad Johnson being is quiet, reliable self the Bears' toughest game might come at the end of the season when they play the Vikings at Minnesota.

And how about those Vikings? After a 2-5 start the Vikes have won four straight to improve to 6-5, they beat NY, this team that is supposedly the best in the NFC, without scoring a single touchdown on offense and followed that win up by beating Green Bay to complete the sweep, something the Vikings have not done since 1998. (You know, the team that went 15-1 and lost to Atlanta in the NFC Championship game with Gary Anderson, who had not missed a single field goal all season, missed a game winning field goal that would have sent Minnesota to the Super Bowl in Miami to pay an also 15-1 Denver Broncos in what might have been the greatest Super Bowl ever) I still believe that if Minnesota wins that first game against Tampa Bay the are also a 9-2 but that first loss really took the wind out of their sails. (Excuse the nautical pun.)

And on another note, Carnell Williams would not have broken those rookie rushing records if not for an incredible string of luck. First game against the Vikings he had 148 rushing yards, keep in mind that 71 of those came off of one lucky play where he somehow ran into a pile of 18 full grown men and emerged on the other side and was gone. The next two games were against teams that are...... less than mediocre and since then he has not had many good things to say about his accomplishments thus far. And also, I seem to remember two Wiggins' TD catches that were called back by let's just say questionable calls.

As was said earlier, it's that damn Viking luck.* (I tell ya, if they didn't have bad luck they would no luck at all.)

Yeah well that's not going to happen. At this point the Giants will be lucky to get a wild card spot. Remember all those yards they put up were against a battered secondary, a battered linebacking core, and a battered defensive line, on a day when the usually merciless Seahawks offence (still sans their best wide reciever) had a horrible first half and kept giving them chances (and I gotta give the giants D some credit particularly willis. He had a couple of key key tackles.)

Dallas wins the Giants lose control of their own desitiny, and I think Dallas is really going to press on some of those weaknesses. Never mind what a defense like Chicago would do to them. Can you imagine Eli scrambling like that in front of Urlacher? Haha. In the dead of winter in Chicago? That would suck, but be great TV. They are better at home than they are on the road (although with that vikings loss that's debatible), and with their record, it's an all road playoff picture unless they get their stuff together quick.

Man the Seahawks playoff picture is looking good with all those tie-breakers. If only we could have that Redskins game back. But I have got to get on buying my broom for the upcoming 49er's game. Woo Sweep!

This is my prediction for the Colts. They will go undefeated until they meet the Seahawks in Seattle. There is when I will throw my overpriced beverage onto Manning. Just like last year, I like the Colts to go all the way; I hope they can stop choking in the playoffs. Being from Ohio I tend to favor the best performing team from my state [for once it's the Bengals, but life has been hard enough as a Browns fan anyway], but I'm realistic about our chances. Cincy's looking nice this year but they still need a better run defense before they will be a top-tier team like Indianapolis or Seattle.

I was in that position last year, don't get too cocky, all it takes is one bad game by your highest scoring player and two good games by his best to turn things around fast. We had a playoff system in my league, four teams, two weeks, one champion. Somehow I ended up against the only person to beat me in the regular season and what do you know, he beat me again because he managed to pull out the second best single game score that season. (guess what, the third and fourth highest were when he was matched up against me earlier in the year. I had the highest with 145 points one week something which nobody has even approached this year.) And I ended up finishing third, best record, most total points, but bad luck.

Just like last year, I like the Colts to go all the way; I hope they can stop choking in the playoffs. I agree but only because I felt that two teams at the beginning of the year in the NFC could match up to the best the AFC would put together, whether it was new England or Indianapolis but neither of those teams are a real Super Bowl threat. Both have for game streaks going, however the Vikings have a four game winning streak while the Eagles have imploded and have a four game losing streak. For all the talk about the Panthers I felt that they were just hyped up. Clearly I know so much about football. >.<

But really nobody has a huge edge in the NFC, sure Seattle has the best record but it is built upon a foundation of sand with a shotty defense, no depth on offense and a team that is very streaky. They are playing one of the easiest schedules in the NFL and they have a history of choking that can almost compare to the Vikings.

Last year it was all Manning and Harrison ...So whenever Manning Choked at the Playoffs it was all over...This year Freeney and that Dungy Defense Pwns...they can take over the game and win it for Manning.

And here I thought people in other countries found American football to be to violent... It would make sense though since soccer is for the more delicate athletes. :D
hehe, soccer is a tad light weight (even more so recently) whereas in rugby you see people trying to defend players having punch-ups;) and being stamped on at the bottom of rucks makes me envy those American football players, that protection...

A bit of violence never hurt anyone ;)

My bookmaker favours the Steelers 69/100 straight up, but I am less than sure, imo it depends on whether Bettis will be playing, last I looked he was listed as probable.

How in the name of God is Denver at 85% when they are 9-2 and New England at 95% at 6-5? That makes absolulely no sense.

Because Denver has 8-4 KC and 8-4 San Diego nipping at their heels while the most New England has to worry about is 5-7 Miami and 5-7 Buffalo.

5 in a row. They're now 7-5. All 4 remaining games are "winnable". Week 17 at home vs. Chicago could potentially decide the NFC North. And if the playoffs were held now, they'd have a wildcard. They'd win tiebreakers over Dallas and Atlanta on division record.

Seattles' my team, but I can't help but agree with most of this. Last week, though, against the Giants, was their first big test. Granted, the Giants lost that game (or rather, their kicker lost that game). But the Seahawks didn't completely blow it down the stretch, as they so often in the past have done.
That said, every week now is becoming more stressful for me, being aware of their weaknesses. However, they can beat, I think, anyone, if they're firing on all cylinders.

Well you're in good position to get Leinart or Young in the draft, but it won't matter if you don't get an offensive line in front of him.

Matt Millen seems to be your real problem. What team needs three #1 wide receivers, besides maybe the Colts? It's pointless to have that many weapons if you can't utilize them.

Got lucky. Two things.

1) That hit to the helmet call shouldn't have been thrown because he lead with his hands and not his helmet. I don't blame Lynch for yelling the way he did. That was a bs call and those of us who knows football knows it.

2) Denver was 1-14 in the month of December at Arrowhead. I'm not 100% surprised.

Why? Why would they risk hurting their stars in meaningless games when they have a Super Bowl to think about. A perfect season is meaningless if Manning or James or Harrison or Freeney go down and they take a quick exit in the playoffs.

if they dont play, they will get rusty. then they will have to find the rythm in the playoffs and that might cost them the game. winning a superbowl is great, but going 16-0 is legendary. they shouldnt be afraid to start guys for fear of injury. playing to not get hurt is what causes injuries. they should just play hard every game.

EDIT: i saw an interview with dwight freeney. he would rather play than sit. and i think that is what any player would want to do.

Yeah, and I think pulling your starters when you have a chance like that betrays a dangerous mindset, that of playing it safe. I thought the Colts should have beaten New England in the playoffs last year, but they came out and played it safe early in the game and it was over almost as soon as it began. You've got to play to win, and you don't want your players thinking any other way.

honestly i think going undefeated is a big deal. i dont see the colts sitting anyone unless of a good size lead. they play off the hype of going undefeated but i bet they are salivating over the idea of a perfect record. the only game i see them sitting anyone is the last one, in the 2nd half against the cardinals...

Colts head coach already mentioned the fact that he would be resting some of his stars. Therefore there is good reason to believe that they may be beat.

But can you risk a injury? Why not play it safe until the playoffs? Then put your first team in and kick ass with well rested guys. An unbeaten season doesnt mean crap if you dont take home the superbowl trophy. I am a Mariner fan. Remember they won 116 games? Probably not huh? Why? Because they lost in the playoffs and didnt bring home the World Series pennant. Basically records dont mean shit unless you win it all.

Again heard that on ESPN from a commentator. Did not actually hear a "Dungy" voice clip saying that fact.

if you invest 30 seconds in a google search you can find this: "Dungy, coach of the undefeated Colts, has said he is playing for a Super Bowl title, not a perfect season." in this story: http://www.courierpostonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051209/SPORTS/512100330/1002/SPORTS which is the first result for this search: http://news.google.com/news?num=20&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2005-09,GGGL:en&q=dungy+colts+perfect&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d

still, he can be saying, what he wants, i dont believe him :-)

Players risk injuries when they get out of bed in the morning. I understand the desire to not take chances, especially when you'll be going up against teams with nothing to lose and who may take the opportunity to cheap shot one of your stars out of the lineup, but if I were the coach, I'd still be playing to win, if only to keep my athletes in their grooves. I might consider pulling my starters in the fourth quarter or even the third, but you don't want to screw up their rhythms this late in the season.

I heard George Will on the radio this afternoon. He has it exactly right about football. It combines the two worst aspects of American culture, violence and decisions by committee.

San Francisco (2-10) at Seattle (10-2)
I favor the mercy rule we have in my New Jersey youth softball league, translated to football: If a team's up by 30 in the second half, you call the game immediately.
Seattle 40, San Francisco 10

haha, this is going to be a bloodbath in Seattle.... I love it...

Let's not forget to mention the San Diego Chargers.

This is a quality football team, with enough weapons to beat any team on any given Sunday.

If they make the playoffs (with their nasty schedule) and I think they will, then they are the only team with a chance of upsetting the Colts.

I could be wrong, though, and it wouldn't be the first time.

And Minnesota just won their 6th in a row. The NFC North just got a whole lot more interesting.
