you seem to forget who MADE rock in the first place?

It started with black musicians in honky tonks, derived from the Blues. Still, that doesn't mean America has the best Rock 'n' Roll around.

EDIT --- Fuck. Beaten to it, I see. *shakes fist furiously*

The British invented Cricket, doesn't mean they're the best at it.

It's funny how all the people who dismiss rap as 'non-music' have never even really listened to any, I suppose it's just ignorance.

It is ignorance. I personally like most all kinds of music, but until a couple of years ago did not like rap at all. But, now that I have had a chance to actually listen to the words that they are saying (it's amazing what having a 14 year old in the house can do to change you!!!!) I don't necessarily like a lot of it, but I have come to RESPECT the music and the people who have written it. All musicans and songwriters (INCLUDING RAPPERS!!!!!!) are just people who have found a way to express themselves without harming anyone else.
And before you start in on those idiots who have committed suicide because they listened to Black Sabbath or who ever, remember this : IT WAS NOT THE MUSIC THAT CAUSED THEM TO ACT THAT WAY! THEY WERE ALREADY FUCKED UP IN THE HEAD AND ON THE PATH LEADING THEM TO SUICIDE ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :headbang:

I would definetley not go with USA for best music. Our mainstream music that "everyone" likes blows. US has some good rock and so does UK. Japan's metal is awesome and so is Germany's. One band that doesn't really fight into a category is Kaizer's Orchestra German Dark Jazz Rock.

Kaizers Orchestra is Norwegian. Everyone go get their songs now.

America...end of story. We currently have the best rock bands going on...and rap is without a doubt dominated by the U.S., even though I hate rap...same goes for punk and pop.

However I do like Scandanavian black metal...Dimmu Borgir is probably my favorite. And I love Germany's Rammstein...godly.

personally i love arabic oldies, rock and i always get "excited" from the latin beats, salsa, samba, tango etc...

but i think Arabic has the best Music, because its the inspiration of the Blues and has very Unique instruments, with very moving sounds, also that arabic is a very deep language, and Arabic Lyrics express wordless feelings....

modern:

1. United States
2. United Kingdom
3. Mexico

days of yore:

Austria, Germany, Italy
(gets confusing telling Germany and Austria apart because some were born in one country but lived/worked in the other... like the German-born Beethoven who did much of his greatest work in Austria)

America...end of story. We currently have the best rock bands going on... Brit rock takes the cake any day of the week, though I've a fondness of Icelandic rock too. US rock is often simply too plain or bland.
and rap is without a doubt dominated by the U.S., even though I hate rap...same goes for punk and pop. Dominate does not equate to best. Personally I prefer japanese rap anyways. It is less about the ego and more about the amusement.

Hmmm...this one is hard. I'll go with the US, but the UK is a close second.

I've also heard some good music from Sweden.

rock wise-

US/Brit/Germany are pretty close, but i think US is still on top just because of the fact that almost all the good bands COME TO AMERICA to break out. US is where its at.

I've always been very fond of Spanish music. Quality stuff, it is.

Still, America is the best for all the Jazz Greats.

Probably Germany, given that they have Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, three of the greatest composers ever to have lived. True, there are those neo-nazi bands, but if I counted off for those, I'd have to give the US negative points for Britney Spears, et al. I would say that the US and England are not too far behind Germany, though.

I think Canada has a very good hit-to-shit ratio. We have a lovely knack for sending anything that we really can't stand to the States.

Quite an interesting debate here. Most people (points the finger firmly at the US) seem to think that quantity is equivalent to quality. The US do have some decent producers of music, but they also have, by a country mile, the worst as well. For consistent quality, the UK wins, as the true birthplace of Rock, and with the current independent music scene there, it truly has the best.

To the person who stated that bands go to the US to "break out" - that is clearly a commercial decision - you buy loads of music and have a much more commercial scene - that means, for international recognition, Bands have to 'make it' in the US to be considered commercially successful - in no way does that make them good.

On a side note, Australia has an excellent live music scene, almost every club or pub has live music, and for real 'dirty' rock music, I think the Aussies have held the market since AC/DC in the early 70's and you only have to look at bands like Spiderbait and Powderfinger to see they still rock!

I am partial to music from all over, I like as far as U.S. genres go, Zydeco, and I like Tex-Mex music very much, as well as old school Mexican music.
I have a great fondness for both Irish and Scottish music, but not that New Age fake Druidical stuff.
I am very fond of Balkans music, particularly music from Bosnia Hercegovina and I love Macedonian bagpipe music, it has great technical excellence, one of the very first records I EVER purchased with my own money, I got when I was 16 and it was Macedonian bagpipe music. Some Irish guy went there and recorded a bunch of it and made this totally excellent record. It was stolen from me, but thankfully there are good sources of this music on the Internet. I've since replaced some of the tunes at least that way.

You guys must hate the Paperboys and Barenaked Ladies then! We like them here but they are not on the radio, not even on folk stations, I have heard the Paperboys live twice when they came to our gulag, and heard Barenaked Ladies only once on the radio, an NPR program only available in two states had them on.
