=WARNING=
=POTENTIAL SPOILERS IN THIS THREAD=

Ok - if you've seen the latest Star Wars film - Revenge of the Sith - post you favourite quote from that film AND your favourite quote from any of the other 5 films.

Give the film title, and the person who said the quote. If you feel up to it - elaborate on the events directly preceeding the quote - without, obviously, revealing the plot to those who haven't seen the new film yet.

My favourite quote from the new film would be

"Every single Jedi is now an enemy of the Republic. Do what must be done. Do not hesitate. Show no mercy."
- Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious, Revenge of the Sith

From all the films, would have to be

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you."
- Yoda, The Phantom Menace

I dont have a favourite quote from Ep III yet, but I do like look Anakin gives the Youngling......

My favorite quote however, is one Palpatine gives to Luke, after Luke implies that the Emporer is wrong.

"Oh no my young Jedi, you will find it is you who are mistaken, about a great many things."
-Emporer Palpatine, ROTJ.

"NOOOOOOOOOOO!!"
- Darth Vader, Revenge of the Sith

My friend and I were sitting in a cinema full of people into the emotional moment of this scene. But ... well, we just burst out laughing.

What I want to know is how consciously Lucas included this scene - was it meant to be a strong emotional moment or was it meant to be a reference to Cheese with a capital C?

That was the only flaw with the movie. It could have been justified if Vader had destroyed some more off the scenery when he said it, or gave Sidious a good smacking out of anger, but just standing their like a constipated lemon did Lucas no favours.

I love this one:

"This is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause."
- Padme, Revenge of the Sith

and

"He killed the younglings, I'm so sorry."
- Obi Wan, Revenge of the Sith

"In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Republic will be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire, for a safe and secure society which I assure you will last for ten thousand years."

hearing darth vader do that was the funniest thing ive seen and heard in my life. It just doesnt fit his character.

What I did in that whole scene was imagine everything Darth said with Anakin's voice, then it all seems to make much more sense why he did it.

But my favourite quote from EPIII has to be...

'There are too many of them, we're outnumbered, what should we do?' *lightsaber sound*

I nearly wet myself laughing in a 'did he really do that?' state of shock.

The best of all tho has to be...

I liked the quote where Mace Windu and 3 other Jedi's come to arrest Palpatine. It's a kick ass opening to an even more kick ass ass-kicking. Can't remember exactly how it goes, but if you've seen the film, you'll know what I mean.

My fav from all movies:

"Apology accepted Captain Needa" - as Needa slumps to the floor dead. Bloody hilarious.

From Revenge of the Sith:

this one's hard...umm...

"Help us Master Skywalker!" or whatever it was exactly that the Padawan said to Anakin, before Anakin pulls out the lightsaber, very cool

YOUNGLINGS: Master Skywalker, there are too many of them. What are we going to do?

ANAKIN looks back at them with a stern expression on his face and ignites his lightsaber.

that was really sad! everyone in the cinema was really shocked when that happened!

That was the only flaw with the movie.

It's not a flaw if it was intentional though, if it was intentionally cheesy. Then it's an injoke or a reference to something else, and a bigger part of movie culture.

I'm not sure though. It's hard to tell with Lucas, especially after he missed the mark so badly with JarJar.
Alomovo
22-05-2005, 10:49
Yes, but it was a serious and defining moment in the film - why would Lucas want to put a "cheesy" moment or joke within it? That's just bad directing, not humour.

[QUOTE=Meilongistan]"Thank you Chewbacca."
- Yoda in Revenge Of The Sith, the only phrase he doesn't speak with the subject misplaced.[QUOTE]

Not to rock the boat (those are all great quotes by the way) but there's really not that much to do with 'Thank you Chewbacca'...

'Chewbacca thank you' - same difference
'you thank Chewbacca' - now that's really illogical, speaking to Chewbacca
'you Chewbacca thank' - ditto
'thank Chewbacca you' - okay, this is getting silly.

Just a dumb thought,

My siblings watched the premiere and we really had fun with this Buzz Lightyear moment afterwards...

"Do you want to have coffee at Starbucks?"

"NOOOOOOOO"

"Do you have the money for the parking fee?"

"NOOOOOOOO"

It's not even authentic Star Wars... the way he shot the scene was a spoof of the scene in Pixar's Toy Story 2... "No Buzz - I AM YOUR FATHER!"

"NOOOOOOOO"

Believe it or not he didnt miss the mark with Jar Jar. I thought the same thing until I began working with children and came to realize that Jar Jar Binks is their favorite Star Wars character. Jar Jar Binks was one of the tools he used to build up a following of younger fans for his new trilogy. That strategy worked. The older fans bitched about Jar Jar but kept watching the sequels anyway, and the younger ones loved Jar Jar and climbed on board for the other sequels (and generated even more profits by renting the old movies they hadnt seen). Jar Jar actually hit the mark perfectly. He now has two sets of fans. Young ones who think the new films are better and love Jar Jar, and old ones who think the originals are better and hate Jar Jar. Both sets watch the movies and buy the merchandise despite the things they dont like. He has successfully appealed to two distinct audiences simultaneously.

Hmm, you may have a point.

I was about to argue the differences between the ewoks and JarJar. I can see that the Ewoks served the purpose in RotJ that you suggest Jar Jar serves in SW:TPM. However, the Ewoks are tolerable.

To me. But I was, roughly, 9 when I saw Return of the Jedi. Was there mass condemnation of the Ewoks in the 80s?

However, I *do* find Jar Jar not only incredibly annoying but also offensive in the appropriation, and dumbing down, of cultural stereotypes.

Favorite quotes:

Leia: "Why you, stuck up, half-witted, scruffy looking nerfherder!"
Han: "Who's scruffy lookin'?"

C3PO: "I believe they think I'm some sort of god!"
Han: "Then why don't you use your divine influence and get us out of this."
C3PO: "Begging your pardon, but that wouldn't be proper."
Han: "Proper!"
C3PO:"It's against my programming to impersonate a deity."

SOme of the other interactions between Han and C3PO are just hilarious.

Honorable Mention: "Don't fuck with the Jedi Master, son!" -Cock Knocker "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (I know. Not Star Wars. But funny enough to mention. :) )

SW universe is, I'm afraid, chock full of latent cultural stereotypes:

Toydarian (Watto) - Arabic
Gungan (Jar Jar) - Jamaican
Ewok (Wicket) - Filipino
Nemoidian (Viceroy) - Chinese
Sandpeople (errr..) - Bedouin Arab

The only cultural stereotypes that get off well are the Japanese, on whom Lucas based much of the Jedi mythos. For example, Obi - sash, Jedi - similar to Jidai Geki or Period of the Wars, even the ascetic unemotional unattachment of the Jedi is taken from Japanese heroic typology. Watch Seven Samurai - Kambei the hero is the leader, type, who is, for all intents and purposes, Asexual. Katsushiro, the young samurai is the pretty boy type who eventually ends up with the girl but can never be the leader type hero he aspires to be (sound familiar?) The others are too obvious for comfort sometimes. I swear, the Ewoks spoke Filipino once or twice.

Haha! Thanks for bringing Kev Smith into the discussion. His takes on the Star Wars universe are hilarious and insightful. The DEATH STAR ROOFER discussion in Clerks is brilliant and the racial deconstruction at the start of Chasing Amy ("Darth Vader, the blackest brother in the universe... now Luke Skywalker, jumped up white boy is attackin' his hood, the Death Star...") is PRICELESS.

Just to make things a bit more interesting, my least favorite quote was deffinentely when yoda said,

I just sat there and shook my head. I was respecting the movie pretty well up till then.

And the giant lizard/horse thing was a bit nutty.

so darth vader has just woken up in that suit for the first time. his body utterly ruined; he is going to be halfman/halfmachine for the rest of his existance.

he asks about his wife, the REASON he has murdered not only his friends and mentors but helpless children. the one thing in the galaxy he holds dear.

he is told that not only did he fail HE IS THE ONE WHO KILLED HER. and in killing her he killed his own child.

you have 60 seconds for this scene. what do you think he should have said?

Well, it always bring memories whenever anyone says, "I have a bad feeling about this."

I'm not sure if I have all the words right and stuff, but my favorite part of Ep III was the battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin, Jedi vs. Padawan.

Obi-Wan said, "You were the chosen one! You were suppose to destroy the sith, not become one of them! You were like a brother to me Anakin. I loved you!"

Ugh! It was so heartbreaking.

Yeah. What was amazing, though, was the Jedi's ignorance.

Yoda realized it about halfway through the movie, which I was happy about.

Anakin did bring balance to the force. The force was centred MUC TOO STRONGLY towards the Light side of the force, and Anakin brought it back to center, henceforth bringing balance to the force.

Yoda figured it out.

Ep. II - "I'm quite beside myself" - C3PO, for its crapness

Ep. III - "You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them" - Obi-Wan. I just found it really emotional.

Despite the fact that George Lucas is a horrible writer and pitiful director (though great producer), he does manage to get some rarely wonderful lines off. Generally the dialog is banal or cheesy at best. The scene transitions were horrible in SW3... he does give the viewer time to savor the unexpected lines. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. It made up for the previous two awful movies. Since it's still fresh in my mind, my favorite part was:

Padme: "I won't die. I promise"
Anikin: "No. I promise."

(Me during the movie: "Whoa. Lucas actually pulled off an emotional scene--oh, nevermind. More droids.")

The allusion to Jesus Christ through the Sith Lord was disturbing: "He saved others but could not save himself."

Also the condemnation of fundamentalism: "Only a Sith speaks in absolutes."

And the political critique: "So this is how democracy dies... to a thunderous applause."
Derscon

Ok best crappy quote from the morase of crap that was that screenplay:

"NOOOO!"
-Darth Vader

"Anakin, You're breaking my heart!"
-A tearful Padme

"You're so beautiful."
"Only because i'm so in love."
"No, no its because I'M so in love with you."
-The sappiest love scene ever written. Not sure whether to laugh or cry at its god awfulness. The best part of the movie is when Padme died, because it insured that such an exchange could never again take place.

"ULTIMATE POWER!"
-Palpatine, otherwise known as the meglomaniac deformed frog being on crack

"Wait, how did this happen? We're smarter than this!"
-Obi Wan, on a side note, Lucas obviously has been in situation where hes felt the desire to say this. Such as when he saw the finished products of Episode 1-3. Unfortunatly, he clearly isnt.

Best Quote in the movie from a petulant Anakin: "I HATE YOU!"

When he got his legs cut off, i cracked up. That paired with Padme's demise almost redeemed the movie. wait... no... no power on this earth could have done that save one of the film's editors accidently wiping the audio track from the entire film.
Also, just out curiosity, why the hell did Yoda run away? he wasn't losing the fight! And why did Obi Wan, who claimed to love Anakin, leave him to slowly and painfully burn to death? If he really had once loved him as a brother, why didnt he at least grant him a quick and painless death?
And finally, to sum up, george lucas, you suck. May you never make a movie again. The end.
PS WHAT THE FUCK WE'RE YOU ON WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU COULD WRITE?!!? That screenplay could have been the work of a group of add glue sniffing preschoolers on a coke binge.

Also, he wasn't "darth vader" when he did the "Nooooo!!" thing. He was still the Anakin/darkside person. He thought she was still alive. It's like he got off a bad pcp trip and didnt remember what he did.

Also obi-wan, didnt want to kill him with his lightsaber. Even tho he was like a brother. Would you use the symbol of your belief's and teachings to kill a family member? Plus he was slipping downteh slop, I dont think Obi-wan wanted to chance getting sucked into the lava also.

When, Obi-wan is on the transport and was pushing aniken to go talk with the senitors, and was talking about how many times he has saved Obi's life, "Only 9 times, that time in (i dont remember =( ) doesnt count...... just doesn't count...." Makes you wonder what happened =p

I was trying to remember that line, course I lost track of that with the moment the Galactic Empire was declared by Palpatine.

Just to ask, did anyone else think the entire bit about the 'Chosen One' ws ever meant to actually 'help' the Jedi? I never bought it at all in the first place.

The Balance to the 'Force' was the catch 52. A thousand Jedi and two Sith a balance do not make.
Theres actually a thing in Sith beliefs that speaks of someone who will bring balance to the Force. It's believed that The Jedi believe the same thing, but interpret it completley differently

The boy who dreamed is gone, consumed by Darth Vader he is

sayeth Yoda to Obi Wan in the Jedi Temple

I.....HATE......YOU

sayeth Anakin as he slowly burns away. I actually think this is one of the better bits in the film as it shows the deformed, mutilated mad creature Anakin has become. He is so enraged, so full of hate that all he can scream is hate as Obi Wan pours his heart out. I think its at that moment you see what fuels the later character of Darth Vader and you see that Anakin is really no more and Darth Vader he trully has become. At that moment you see Vader as a pitiful wretch and it has some poignancy.

I have waited for this for a long time my little green friend!

sayeth the Emperor upon trying to kill Yoda.

so darth vader has just woken up in that suit for the first time. his body utterly ruined; he is going to be halfman/halfmachine for the rest of his existance.

he asks about his wife, the REASON he has murdered not only his friends and mentors but helpless children. the one thing in the galaxy he holds dear.

he is told that not only did he fail HE IS THE ONE WHO KILLED HER. and in killing her he killed his own child.

you have 60 seconds for this scene. what do you think he should have said?

"oh well, easy come easy go?"
I'll admit that I've stopped reading just past this point, so I don't know how other people have adressed this, but I'll give it a whirl-

Sparse up his dialog a little more, maybe even down to just one or two words: Padme, or Where is Padme (alright, thats three...). Palpatine tells him whats up-you killed her. He is putting Vader in his control-it's part of the subtext of that scene, Palpatine is undermining Vader-that's in there even without the yell.

Keep the crushing, make the breathing uneven, maybe even cut it out all together. Clench the fist, amp the damage crank the score, then bring it down all at once...pause. Inhale, exhale. Vader walks forward, Palpatine barely contains his smile. Vader has shutdown-he is now a passionless power mad pawn of the emperor who will later hope to betray him and rule the universe on his own. He is, now in this final betrayal the Darth Vader we next see raiding Leah's ship in episode IV.

While I'm at it-Anikan should not have built C-3PO, a protocal driod that appears all over the place and is only special in that he is paired up with an extra spunky R2 unit. Anikin should have been building R2-D2, a very remarkable, resourceful and independent R2 unit that literally drives the original series in a way that Toto can only dream of. It would have actually leant narrative to the original films without having to alter a single thing about them. Now granted, they only wiped C3PO's memory at the end of the movie leaving R2-D2 to know exactly what's happening and who is who 20 years later when A New Hope starts up, but it would have had soooo much more weight if it had been R2 that he built. There even could have been a moment of clarity before Anikin slips where he has R2-D2 'look after my wife and kids," thus setting in motion his actions in the original movies.

That and don't explain the force, I don't want to know how it works. Everything else I have come to terms with, these are the only things left that bother me.

I never though about it that way. I thought he brang balence to the force through Luke and Leia or something like that but what you say makes MUCH more sence.

Hilariously bad dialogue:
"Yeah i heard its quite the thing to see"
"I don't like sand, its rough, irritating and gets everywhere"

actual cool lines:
"I'd sooner kiss a wookie"
"You want me to arrange that? he could use a good kissing"

"What are you doing here?"
"We're here to rescue you!"
"Good job!"

"I have a new strategy, let the wookie win" (or something along those lines)

"And i thought this thing smelt bad from the outside"

"You were the chosen one! you were supposed to bring balance to the force, and destroy the Sith!"

"You were like my brother, i loved you!"

"You're breaking my heart!"

and any other quote in the final deul

"I love you"
"I love you too" (Han and Leia)

"I'm a Jedi, like my father before me"

"You killed my father! No, I am your father"

The entire bit where Vader taunted Luke about the possibilty of changing Leia over to the dark side

"Just like beggar canyon back home!"

"May the force be with you" (right before the final assault on the death star)

The conversation between Luke and Han as they were both about to be execute by Jabba

The bit where Leias acts like the posh princess and calls Chewbacca a "moving carpet"

Any sort of friendly bickering at all between Luke, Leia and Han

And many more I can't remeber

Here's a @@SPOILERS@@ question-

Was Palpatine faking it? When Mace Windu was going to town on him and had him pinned, Palpatine kept pressing, but the damage being done to him was from his own attack reflected back. Was he doing that to keep Windu from whacking him, or was he putting on a show for Anikin to trick Anikin into killing Windu? Could Palpatine have ended that fight anytime he wanted? Or was it a gamble, could Windu have taken Palpatine and was Palpatine gambling on Anikin coming across to the dark side? It was obviuosly calculated, but in what way? How bad-ass is Palpatine, or Windu for that matter?

Palpatine was putting on a show for Anakin. Mace couldn't have beaten Palpatine in an even match.

And yes, I saw Ep. III Thurs evening. In costume.

My fave quote was: "And have the protocol droid's mind wiped." Bail Organa to Capt. Antillies.

But also was "I do believe I'm starting to get the hang of this flying thing" by C3P0.

And I liked: "Something wonderful has happened. Annie...I'm pregnant."
*Stunned silence* "That's wonderful."
"Annie...what are we going to do?"

And of course: "You were my brother, Anakin! I loved you! You were supposed to bring balance to the Force, and destroy the Sith, not join them!" ~ Obi-Wan Kenobi.

A little bit of everything. Palatapine was faking it to a point. Mace Windu is probably the second-strongest Jedi on the Council (Anakin notwithstanding), second only to Yoda, so yeah, he's pretty freakin' strong (Plus it's Samuel freakin' Jackson, come on! :D).

It was a show, though, at the same time. Palatapine wanted Mace/Jedi to look bad in front of Anakin, as to bring him to the dark side.

Also, I'm making a WAG here, though, I think Palatapine WANTED his face to become deformed as to have physical evidence of the "Jedi Rebellion."

Plus, the Chancellor was using his force lightning to push up on Mace's lightsabre, who was pushing down.

So yeah, it was a fascade AND and actual struggle.

Palpatine was putting on a show for Anakin. Mace couldn't have beaten Palpatine in an even match.

BS, dude. Mace Windu was the best saberwielder in the Jedi Order, even better than Yoda (although Yoda was the stronger Forceuser overall). Palpatine was trying to make Mace look bad, but he wasn't faking for anyone's benefit; he was trying to fend off Windu from taking his head off. Had Anakin not been there, Mace would have cut the would-be Emperor to ribbons.

Now, as the for my favorite line, Derscon got it already, but my favorite was Yoda in Ep. V, describing the Force:

"Size matters not. Look at me; judge me by my size do you? And where you should not, for my ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is: life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us, and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force surround you. Here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere. Yes, even between the land and the ship."

Yoda was beaten overall (but barely) by Palpatine. Yoda could kick Windu's arse from one end of the galaxy to another. Ergo, Palpatine was clearly superior to Windu. If he wasn't a VERY powerful being (powerful enough to cow even Yoda into hiding) he would not have lasted almost 30 years as Emperor.

I imagine it's already been posted, but my favorite is "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering." by Yoda because if you look at the world you will see that it is so true.

Heh - my favourite thing to do is to wave my hand whenever a teacher asks me for a piece of homework, and say "You do not need to see my Geography Paper"

Unfortunately, a couple of teachers have cottoned on and now just answer with "Your Jedi mind tricks will not work on me, my young padawan"
I used to wave my hand in front of co-workers and say things like "Bring me a candy bar" or "Buy me this book"--until one actually bought me a book and it kinda creeped me out...

Apparantly - Mon Mothma was supposed to be in Revenge of the Sith - but I didn't see her...maybe I blinked.

Anyone else see her?

No, and the number of people quoting her is beginning to confuse the hell out of me.
Actually, finnuily enough, somone also mentioned a quote from a scene in Episode II that I have no memory (the one in which somone is speaking to Padme about Dooku). I just watched Episode II again, and I'm starting to wonder about my sanity. Can anyone clear this up?

TARKIN: You would prefer another target? A military target? Then name
the system!

TARKIN: I grow tired of asking this. So it'll be the last time. Where
is the Rebel base?

LEIA: (softly) Dantooine.

LEIA: They're on Dantooine.

TARKIN: There. You see Lord Vader, she can be reasonable. (addressing
Motti) Continue with the operation. You may fire when ready.

LEIA: What?

TARKIN: You're far too trusting. Dantooine is too remote to make an
effective demonstration. But don't worry. We will deal with your Rebel
friends soon enough.

That never gets old.

Mon Mantha was supposed to be in the film, but I think I heard that Lucas cut her from RoTS.

In Ep 2 - there is a bit towards the beginning, when the Jedi are talking to Palpatine, and Padme says that she thinks Dooku tried to assassinate her. There is then a lengthy discussion about him.

Has anyone ever tried a slight variation of the good ol' "You don't need to see his identification" when entering the movie theater?

"You don't need to see my movie ticket." Of course paired with the "waving your hand like this" - sure will give you a surprised look :D

I actually was with a group of people and there were seats that were "reserved", when we tried to take them the person holding them said, NO you cant take them they are reserved. I waved my hand and said, "These are not the seats you are thinking about."

Then the guy pulled out his fake lightsaber so i ran away.

So how many people have ever used, or seen someone use, the whole 'You do not need to...' trick? And did they couple it with the hand gesture?

Yoda was beaten overall (but barely) by Palpatine. Yoda could kick Windu's arse from one end of the galaxy to another. Ergo, Palpatine was clearly superior to Windu. If he wasn't a VERY powerful being (powerful enough to cow even Yoda into hiding) he would not have lasted almost 30 years as Emperor.
Yoda was a force welder while Mace was a swordmaster. in pure lightsaber combat he could yoda however the battle between palpatine and yoda was Force and Lightsaber

I still don't fully understand why Yoda went into hiding. All that happened was that he suddenly gave up on the fight, hobbled into what Trekkies would call a Jefferies Tube, and suddenly
"Into exile, I must go"

Surely he could have kept up the fight against Palpatine

A Star Destroyer is surrounded by ATTACK CRUISERS. On the bridge of the Star Destroyer stands the EMPEROR and GOVERNOR TARKIN

DARTH VADER walks along the bridge to join the EMPEROR and GOVERNOR TARKIN. The camera PANS to reveal the huge frame

Palpatine (to Anakin): The Force is a pathway to many abilities, some considered to be... sploitz.
Anakin: Can I use them to powerlevel?
Palpatine: The Jedi are lame. They won't let you PL.

Obi Wan (to Anakin): Be sure to log all your chats with Old Spice.
Anakin: That's against the EULA!
Obi Wan: Information wants to be free, yo.

Mace (to Palpatine): We gonna take you to the pen, Wrinkles!
Palpatine: Step back, fool!

Palpatine (to Vader): Those Jedi biotches are now K.O.S. Time to get busy, angst man! :mp5:

Yoda (to Obi Wan): A dirty haXXor that Anakin punk is!

If he wasn't a VERY powerful being (powerful enough to cow even Yoda into hiding) he would not have lasted almost 30 years as Emperor.

Yoda is the stronger Forceuser overall without question, although this isn't to say that Windu isn't a damned powerful Forceuser (in the entire galaxy, probably the only three people that could match him or beat him are Palpatine, Anakin, and Yoda). But that isn't what Mace and Palpatine were using; they were doing a straight-out lightsaber duel. And Mace Windu, while not the strongest Forceuser, is flat-out the best lightsaber user in the galaxy. No one, not Palpatine, not Obi-Won, not Anakin, not even Yoda could have stood up to him in a one on one duel were it kept fairly strictly to
lightsabers-only. The only guy who might have had a chance was Dooku, and that was only because his style was so heavily geared towards defense against opposing lightsabers (as opposed to the typical lightsabers styles, which emphasize defense against blasters far more).

As I understand it, the reason why Yoda went into hiding was two-fold. One, the Emperor managed to cripple Yoda (note how he was clutching his side) and prevent him from continuing the fight even though Yoda was winning. The other reason was because Yoda finally realized that he had been mistaken in how to use the Force and how to beat the Emperor: he need not avoid emotion at all cost, but harness it in a positive way. This was detailed more fully in the novelized version of the movie.

.

Just a note. Windu was a practicionar of a little-known combat style in lightsabers, which is why he was so good. Theres actually a link that I found whilst browsing, you might want to look at it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightsaber_combat
