There is one situation, and one only, in which a knife is more effective than a loaded gun in equally skilled hands, and that is when the two combatants find themselves within arms reach of each other before the gun can be fired. To begin with, this is the situation the Redcoats who fell into the MOBRA pits found themselves in.

Also, even the top-notch training of the British regiments could not prevent a touch of disorder when the ground fell away beneath the soldiers' feet. The Demonic Gophers made good use of this and their small size to close with a few more of those who had fallen into the pits, but increasingly accurate fire from the lethal British Maxims, both of those they were fighting directly and from above the edge of the pit, soon pushed them back into the tunnels.

With a high-pitched call of "Retreat! Retreat! Fall back to the second position.", the surviving DG soldiers scurried back to the tunnels and vanished into the depths.

Battered and with many casualties but triumphant in victory, the troops scramble out and march off in search of a village that hasn't been burned by the Gophers yet, so the other ranks can get drunk and the officers can declare the local house of government there new officer's club and demand payment from all those tresspassing, especially the girls!
