Unless people in New Bunswick don't say thei Ah's, they don't talk like we do.
Well, Ive talked to people from Boston and Southern NB (northerners tend to take on the Labrador accent a bit) - but yeah, same sound. :)

Like I said, they even call it a 'Bostonian accent' ;)

BASTIN (Boston) accents are not thus (no "r" voicing, hard vowels) due to italian-american influence... right?

wouldn't it be more due to british influence, as with most of the northeast?

I'll look for it then, I just don't want people to think I'm conceited (well, actually I think thoughts of that will fade if I can find the pic anyway! haha! My dead sexy half naked sinewy body! hehehe!)

Say now though, what do you think about accents of different places close to Boston? Ive talked to people both from Boston and from Southern New Brunswick - I cant see a difference at all. I can imagine there might be as one gets closer to Northern New Brunswick... but heck, they even call it a 'Bostonian accent' in Southern NB!! Hm, just wondering what the opinions of people over there were. :)
hmmmm. i can tell the little differences from the east coast canucks and bostonians. i can even single out a vermonter, and a person from new hampshire. and also, i dont think that people from edmonton and calgary sound exactly like minnesotans. alike, but different. but thats just me. i notice details.

New York - Certain ones. People in Manhattan tend to have the nicest accents... Well, let's just say the least stressed. And that's a good thing.

London - Not sure what area, but the "soft" sounding ones.

Italian - Again, not sure what areas/regions, but to me they all sound very nice.

Now, for the ones I cannot bear.

Texas - Most areas/regions. Horrible accents throughout the state, many being in the "dipshit" level.

Alabama - Like Texas, but higher-pitched and squeaky. Not a nice accent.

Arkansas - Well, not too bad in some parts, but plenty of people sound flat-out strange.

Yeah, Im sure there are subtle differences, I mean, there are differences from one town to the next sometimes. Im sure there are differences between NB and Boston, but they are very slight ones indeed. As far as east coast Canucks and Boston, well, there are so many accents within eastern Canada - NB is by far the closest though.

I can spot most accents right away too, the only difference Ive ever noticed between here and Washington is that the farther south you go, and for sure by the time youre in Oregon, you get that drawn out 'whhat' sound happening (theres a tendancy to really annunciate the 'wh' sound) - otherwise I cant tell the difference between say, people in Seattle and people in Vancouver that easily. :)

I've never heard Cuntucky before either. Also, in response to the "nekkid" vs. "naked" thing, there is a difference between the two, at least to those of us who actually use the word nekkid. "Naked" means that you are devoid of something, usually clothing. "Nekkid" means you are doing something that you probably shouldn't be doing while at the same time being without clothing, like when one says "He shot across the football field, nekkid."

Also, I have a very pronounced Kentucky/Tennessee accent. Just for your edification.

I have no idea why. We've also got a sizeable Irish population (think Boston Celtics), too, so I doubt it's any one group.

There are several strains of Boston accent.

The most recognizable ("pahk the cah"), is southie. I don't know if the accent comes from any one group exactly, because there are a buncha buncha Italians and Irish in Boston. However, I'm inclined to go with the Irish, just because the North End accents sound a lot more distinctly Italian.

But then there's the "Boston Brahmin" accent, which is like the over-correct Kennedy-speak. That one I think is a hold-over from colonial days when folks tried to show sophistication over provincialism by trying to talk like Brits instead of letting language slide.

To get back on topic, neither of these are particularly sexy accents. Nothing quite like a really hot chick asking, "What ah you, fukkin' retahded?"

I think the Kennedy type accent can be ok, I like the accents and find them interesting, perhaps not 'sexy' though. I tend to go for more 'exotic' sounding and 'elegant' accents (I really go for eloquence in speaking though over anything else, and if I can learn to talk with the eloquence of Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery or Goran Visnjic I think I'll have it made, regardless of my accent)

On another note, I really thought youd be the one to mention one accent in particular ;) (and for what its worth, Polish is a very sexy accent to have!)

The Kennedy-speak really isn't that prevalent at all. It's the accent of the overly wealthy Bostonians who once spoke with the regular accent, but tried and failed to speak "properly." They're the kind of people you see with multi-million dollar homes on the Cape or Martha's Vineyard. Certainly not normal Bostonians.

Ah. I do alright. But really, what's the good of being remembered if one has to be a pest about it?

I'm actually most impressed with the multi-language accents. Like, to pull an example out of thin air, a Moroccan who learned English at a French school. So you got the French-accented English over the Arabic accent patterns. This is why I said the thing about Boston Brahmin before: I was in Boston when I was young and I still say "against" like I was Prince Charles Kennedy. "agA-inst."

Another notable is Monica Bellucci (which I posted to the effect of earlier) An Italian who was brought up for some of her education in France, and then learned English... wow, what an amazing accent to have all that rolled into one and then to have it backed up by an even more beautiful voice. Whoo! Now thats sexy!

I like Welsh accents....might be something to do with the fact I sometimes collapse into a Welsh accent for no reason.....but then I can sort of do scouser and Brummie too....maybe I should say I have the generic Middle Class English accent, perhaps if you listen closely enough with a touch of generic American middle class, but I don't know about that...yet.

While I was in Dallas all I got was 'I lurve yar accent!' and bad attempts at people mimicing it :p but then their attempts to get me to say 'I know y'all' came out to a similar standard.
