Never been a fan of the Minnesota accent ... sort of a weird mix of Swedish and Western Canadian. *shudder* See the film Fargo and you'll know what I mean.

I really like Georgian accents (the State, not the Country) and Russian accents.

It's probably different from the north Welsh accent then (no idea, honestly though. Just the Welsh people I have heard.)

Interesting crime statistic I heard recently, 10% of crime in north Wales is caused by Scousers.

No idea if it is true (it was in the express), funny though.

Depends on what the person using the accent is like really. It is difficult to determine how sexy someone is on his or her voice alone, although it is a useful indicator.

I don't think many people outside Australia really truly know what an Australian accent is. It certainly isn't the sounds one hears from the likes of Steve Irwin!
Markreich

What you don't normally encounter. By far the best one I ever heard was some British nanny in some park in London. All she said was "Geo-ooorge" in order to bring one of the like 9 kids she and two other nannies were watching back to the herd.

But invariably, anything that hits you in that semi-exotic spot works. :)

This was in Manchester. (I should also add that she stayed her for a year longer then planning to, only a few months originally. So the pros must have outweighed the cons.)

AKAIK London has quite a large immigrant community from Australia and NZ (yes I know you sound different but we cannot tell the difference). Also they're used to foreigners. I Manchester we just get students from around the country.

Three times I was able to walk from the center of Cambridge out to one of the Park & Ride sites without hearing another person speak English. I know it isn't true, don't worry, but there are a lot of non-English speakers in the cities, not that I have any problem with it.

"What most English people don't know is that there is a difference between the Australian accent and the New Zealand accent. What most Australians don't know is that English people don't care" ~ Milton Jones. ;)

Although the main way we cannot tell the difference is because we rarely ever hear a New Zealand accent, and if we have, it is probably from the LotR commentry.

Ha ha ha ha HA! Well yeah the soft accents are sexy but the hard spikey ones are just HILARIOUS to listen to. Like in Rat Race, "Woo wooend awah ole vacation!" And from some movie I forget, "Five hundred dollah!"

Can I weigh in here as a native speaker of Great Lakes US English?

Sexy/attractive accents:
The really slow Southern US accents, what I call "plantation Southern" fron
Tennessee, Mississippi, etc.

Light Irish and Scots, including eastern Canada like Nova Scotia and Newfoundland which often sound Irish/Scots (not the really heavy ones which are hard to understand)

Some Non-English accents if they're not really heavy: Italian, Spanish, East Asian, Latin American

Unsexy/unattractive accents:
Any accent so thick I can't understand the speaker

Heavy Northeast US--New York, northern New Jersey, Boston, Philadelphia
the "Mafioso" accent

Oooh! There are so many sexy accents! (In fact, I think almost anyone with a sexy voice can make an accent sexy!)

I'm in love with french accents (Sophie Marceau), Latin accents are a real treat too (Maria Grazia Cucinotta), or better yet combine them (Monica Bellucci = French & Italian!!). South African accents are hella sexy (Charlize Theron), and so are some English accents (Elizabeth Hurley), and some Australian Accents (Thandie Newton). Most of the Eastern European accents are sexy (Grrrrr!! ;)) and so are a lot of the Northern European accents. Southern accents can be, but only if its a dignified accent and not the stereotypical trailer park slang ridden rot. I've even met a few Japanese ladies lately who have changed my opinion of asian accents as being un-sexy... So yeah, like I said, almost any accent with the right voice and on the right person can become sexy! :)

(PS: A person needs to be able to speak eloquently as well ;))

(and on a side note: for people in here saying that they dont like Canadian accents but that they are in love with Bostonian accents... um, have you been to the maritimes? It just so happens (though I'm sure pride will intervene here and some will try and deny it) that the accents of some of the provinces in the maritimes are almost indistinguishable from the accents south of the border... accents arent divided by imaginary lines folks! ;)

Thats alright then, as long as youre not like one un-named poster who went as far as to describe Canadian accents as Un-sexy, but described Bostonian accents as dead-sexy. I don't like generalistic over-provincial attitudes.

Like I said, Parts of Canada and the states share the same accents, more on a north to south basis than east to west. Anyone who has met both people from the Boston area and Southern New Brunswick and english speaking Southern Quebec/East Ontario have accents so similar that I dont think most people could tell them apart (hell, just look on a map and see how close they are, its no wonder people sound the same!) Accents dont just suddenly stop at borders. :)

Now I wanna hear your accent :)

Sorry. :( If I ever buy a microphone, I'll record my voice and put the .wav file online for you all to download.

Best accent by FAR is a girl with a soft ulster accent. It just has a lilt to it. :fluffle:

I'm impressed (and scared) that someone put bristle (bristolian). Impressed that you care, scared that you think it's sexy. Have you heard anyone from Hartcliffe speak?

I'll look for it then, I just don't want people to think I'm conceited (well, actually I think thoughts of that will fade if I can find the pic anyway! haha! My dead sexy half naked sinewy body! hehehe!)

Say now though, what do you think about accents of different places close to Boston? Ive talked to people both from Boston and from Southern New Brunswick - I cant see a difference at all. I can imagine there might be as one gets closer to Northern New Brunswick... but heck, they even call it a 'Bostonian accent' in Southern NB!! Hm, just wondering what the opinions of people over there were. :)

Nova Scotia is different than New Brunswick though, they seem to have their own language - still a little similar though.

(and dont even get me started on Labrador Newfoundlanders and people from the rock! by-gash-der-bye!!! Great people, and loads of fun to talk to, if you can pick up on the many words distinct to each locale!!! ;))

I can so relate.. I live in Gainesville Florida (Home of the University of Florida Gators)

But the city/county is right in the middle of redneck land..

They have the lowest IQ known to man... Talking about and I quote "They're new pickup truck with the big mudding tires on it"

Unless people in New Bunswick don't say thei Ah's, they don't talk like we do.

That's probably not something you should be letting too many people know.
