Here's mine:

Economic Left/Right: -0.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.85

This means that I'm centrist on economics and libertarian on social issues.

I know most of you are aware of this site but for those of you who don't know:
http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/

I intend to compile a chart of NS users. I imagine the most dots will be on the liberal left quadrant, but let's see!

I know it's been done before, but people's positions change. I used to be far left and more conservative.

so i've been meaning to do a chart with a randomly selected sample of ns players, instead of just the self-selected ones who answer these posts on the general forum. would you like to work together on it?

i mean in order to get a random sample. like if we used some sort of random process to get a list of nations to telegram and compiled their answers.

its really just two different methodologies that aim at different things, and i'd like to compare the results - i suspect that a random sample will be more evenly spaced on the chart than the intensive survey of denziens of the general forum.

and if i could get a couple volunteers, it would be really easy to do. just fire off a couple of form letters and report replies.

I'd always support my country, whether it was right or wrong

I don't get a few of these questions. Are they asking if I would profess support of my governments actions even if I thought they were wrong, or do they ask whether I'd leave the country and hide in Canada if I were in the military and asked to go to a war I didn't support? I guess they mean the former, but the latter is an acceptable interpretation.

Seems like the quiz was written by a libertarian.

I don't see where a statement that asks what how you would like to see a societies laws shaped is predjudical. On the other hand, I picked one of the PC quiz questions at pseudo--random. Is "Our race has many superior qualities, compared with other races." so neutral?

Sorry, but what a load of crap.

"Medical care will be provided most efficiently by a free market as opposed to a centralized government bureaucracy."

Loaded language. The word bureaucracy is a deliberate attempt to sway people. If you removed the words "Centralised" and "Bureaucracy" you would have an unbiased question.

"Record companies are right to go after on-line services that encourage the violation of copyright laws."

"Encourage the violation of copyright laws" Is loaded language as well. If it were to be unbiased, "offer free downloads of copywrited material" would be more appropriate.

"Limiting the practice of medicine to licensed doctors is bad policy because it unnecessarily drives up the cost of medical care."

Biased. Who wants to spend more on medical care? Not me! I guess i'll agree with them without considering the ramifications.

The other questions aren't so bad, but I loved the result:

Total Inefficiency: 70.7%

What it means: A high inefficiency score indicates that you favor policies that make people more unhappy than they could be otherwise.

Hooray. That's an unbiased test for you. I favour policies that make people unhappy!!! Oh noes!!!

Most likely, the questions are *supposed* to be loaded. They are meant to see which extreme you sympathize with the most. Some questions are more central, others are obviously very loaded.

I guess (though that's not what the original poster said), but saying to me "A high score under anarchic indicates that you are probably a stereotypical extremist libertarian." doesn't bode well either. They might as well have titled it the "how well do you fit with my political beliefs test"

But more importantly, this "compass" is biased. C'mon, Thatcher much closer to Hitler than to Friedman?! Obviously, they really don't like her. I'm sure the weights they assign to different answers are biased according to their own preferences. If I had time to experiment, I could easily find out how much each question is weighted, but it so far it seems to me that they consider lower right quadrant the "correct" position and all others as deviations.

I have fairly right-wing views on business (though I am anti-monopoly as they are bad for the economy and turn business sects into warped forms of communism, and there needs to be some form of enviromental regulation), though I'm socialist on health care, social welfare and social security. Economic Left/Right: 2.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.05

I have fairly right-wing views on business (though I am anti-monopoly as they are bad for the economy and turn business sects into warped forms of communism, and there needs to be some form of enviromental regulation), though I'm socialist on health care, social welfare and social security. People just aren't smart enough to save up on their own, although if you want private social security it should be optional.
You sound similar to me (except I am not really big into social welfare).

I wonder how I ended up to the left of you?

You're a libertarian socialist (aka "extreme liberal" if you're an American), which puts you in the majority here on NS.

Total Inefficiency: 57%

What it means: A high inefficiency score indicates that you favor policies that make people more unhappy than they could be otherwise.

Your score breaks down as follows:

Authoritarian: 10%
What it means: A high score under authoritarian indicates that you advocate policies that inefficiently restrict the rights
of individual people, placing these rights under government control instead. You believe that in many cases the government knows
better than individuals what is good for them.

Anarchic: 80%
What it means: A high score under anarchic indicates that you are probably a stereotypical extremist libertarian. You
believe that people ought to be inefficiently within their rights to perform certain actions, even if those actions make others worse
off without compensation. You have arbitrarily selected certain behaviors as unquestionable natural rights and the impact they have
on people who disagree is of no consequence.

Japhthor says: "Yep, that's me. Low on the 'authoritarian' side and high on the 'anarchic' side."

This thing's bullsh*t quite frankly. It covers nothing about military issues, and only a couple of social issues. Heck, it paint me as just a touch right of Gandhi!

It asks economic questions that are filled to burst with complex nuances that they won't let you explore, for example, "Protectionism is sometimes necessary in trade"

Now I can think of plenty of ways Protectionism could be useful to a naiton, it can help prevent shocks or gluts in the market, we use it all the time in the US. But overall they ARE market distortions and should be avoided in the long term. Now, what do I put down? If I put even a slight "agree" I'm a collectivist in their eyes.

Bullsh*t. I'm a realist. Sometimes the market goes too far too fast, but does that mean I want to restrict it unduly? No! Sometimes people just need a cushion, easing out an outdated product, or slowly letting a new competing nation to increase trade with you, etc. Mind you I say sometimes! So I agree with them that yes, Protectionism is sometimes needed; now I'm a commie.

This thing is as bad as any other test. It tries to pigeonhole you into a idealogical identity. That's a bad way to think of yourself;, as merely an idea recepticle instead of a human being.

I mostly agree, sometimes when answering you have to compensate for the deficiencies of the questions.

However, I think it's better than any other online political quiz I've seen. It doesn't try to pigeonhole you as much as the others. They only have four quadrants, where as the others will tell you you're a "conservative democratic socialist" or some such.

This test is useful for surveys like these, but personally I didn't need it to know that I was a centrist libertarian.
