Now we all know then! Glad to be of service! :D

BTW, I would say it is inherent in human nature to generalise, to stereotype and to put people in categories.....to name a few:
rednecks, lefties, moshers, chavs, tweenies, scallys, yuppies, toffs, country bumpkins, sloane rangers.......its like a form of tribalism!

I always assumed it would be from sunburn lines, but I have always thought that redarms would be more applicable, due to the predominance of cutoff t-shirts.

I'm not sure how the term was so easily annexed and put to use in such a fashion. Really (and I use it myself so I'm as much to blame) to be a redneck - literally - is not a bad thing. It's a shame really what somehow became associated with the term. Just like cowboy.

There are just as many bigot's wearing suits as there are in cowboy boots. Rest assured we will do well to remember that. I live in the city now, but was born and raised in the country - there are just as many people who are intolerant here surrounded by concrete as there were where people were surrounded by open land. Intolerance is not something locally reserved for people living away from urban centers.

In fact, there have been times when I've thought it worse in the city, because in a small town you have to get along with everyone. In a big city you have a choice to segregate because there are more people to 'pick' your social circle from. I'm not saying that there aren't bigots in the country, or that all people in the city are - nothing of the sort. I'm just speaking as someone who came from such a place and as a person who doesn't appreciate the generalization being made.

Just my two-bits, for what it's worth. ;)

Absolutely right. Really its only because its alot easier to pick on people who are poor/ignorant than it is people who make lots of money and are impeccably informed as to how to appear open-minded!

Exactly, just because it's a dressed up refined (if you can say that) form of predjudice most certainly does not change what it is at base value. I have found that people are on relatively equal footing when it comes to making a comparison of such issues between different social divides. The strange thing is that the people on the lower rungs of that ladder are the ones who get hit with the dirty end of the stick the most. People up top sometimes forget about whose shoulders they're standing on while they're reaching for the stars. ;)

Jeez there's so much I want to reply to that I've forgotten all of them :p

Cambridge is wet. I've been there, actually in the city, three times in as many years. It chucked it down the first time. It chucked it down steadily for two days the second. The third it rained a bit, was very cold and very damp.
About the bias. In my class 8 girls applied for Cambridge. 2 applied for Oxford. The international student applying for Portugese at Oxford got in. One of the Cambridge girls got into LSE for Economics, one got into UCL for medicine and another into Boston Uni, USA also for Economics. Cambridge wants to get in Blair's good books with their statistics. Whatever happened to judging by merit?

I like clubbing. About the only time I come out of my shell is on the dance floor and online..oh and with close friends of course. Trouble is being a sexy dancer bit me and I think I've been scarred :( I let myself be pulled by some guy who proceeded to semi-stalk me, wanting sex. I've refused every guy who's asked me out...I've got a feeling there's a connection...
But I've been a 'bar-bitch' it's fun. :D (<- Mr.Green!) And free drinks are always good.

Talking about coming out of my shell online...I msned a guy a pic of my breasts as bribery to get him to call a helpline for his gf's domestic violence probs. My bribery worked...unfortunately the call didn't...ah well, I just got depressed.

Girls are better at passing exams than boys. Boys have a greater domination of the sciences and languages I believe and women of English, humanities and creatives...but that might be wrong, haven't seen the chart since the summer...

Women > men at dancing that's for sure.

Some other point....

Merit means different things to different people....if I'd paid ten grand a term for my kids education I would damn well expect A grades! Going to a school where no-one cares if you even turn up means an A is practically a miracle

I think Latin just wants the other languages to think it's cool, so it does the metaphorical equivalent of leaning against a wall wearing sunglasses and trying to act disillusioned with all the modern phases other languages are going through...

It probably just wants a hug, really. Maybe we should try and set it up on a blind date with English*. Although she might cheat on it... she tends to get around quite a bit... Maybe Russian would be better.

Or maybe I should go sleep because it's 2am** and I'm discussing the intimate relationships of languages.

Latin dating English? Wouldn't that be like a sixty year old dating someone in their early twenties? I think something like Greek would suit it down to a tee, and all the younger languages can all go 'Aww, look at the two oldys in love :fluffle: '.

Nah I think Latin would like the scary side of Greek, it's been a while since Latin's sons and daughters have flown the nest and it's been all alone, but now suddenly something as big and famous as Greek is courtning it - quite a confidence booster. Wow, my brain is messed up.
I misread that as "COCAINE PHOSPHATE" and was about to comment on how that wasn't anything, when I realized that wasn't what it said.

On a different note...
Cocaine was soon sold over-the-counter. Until 1916, one could buy it at Harrods: a kit labelled "A Welcome Present for Friends at the Front" contained cocaine, morphine, syringes and spare needles. Cocaine was widely used in tonics, toothache cures and patent medicines; in coca cigarettes "guaranteed to lift depression"; and in chocolate cocaine tablets. One fast-selling product, Ryno's Hay Fever and Catarrh Remedy ("for when the nose is stuffed up, red and sore") consisted of 99.9 per cent pure cocaine. Prospective buyers were advised - in the words of pharmaceutical firm Parke-Davis - that cocaine "could make the coward brave, the silent eloquent, and render the sufferer insensitive to pain".
Harrods used to rock.
:D
There is perhaps a single predictable time of life when taking crack-cocaine is sensible, harmless and both emotionally and intellectually satisfying. Indeed, for such an occasion it may be commended. Certain estimable English doctors were once in the habit of administering to terminally-ill cancer patients an elixir known as the "Brompton cocktail". This was a judiciously-blended mixture of cocaine, heroin and alcohol. The results were gratifying not just to the recipient. Relatives of the stricken patient were pleased, too, at the new-found look of spiritual peace and happiness suffusing the features of a loved one as (s)he prepared to meet his or her Maker.

Drawing life to a close with a transcendentally orgasmic bang, and not a pathetic and god-forsaken whimper, can turn dying into the culmination of one's existence rather than its present messy and protracted anti-climax.
Now that is a good death.

I try not to use heavy stuff, but theres lots available to people who need it up here. I just end up eating a lot of the crap during peak snowboarding and wakeboarding seasons. ... Well, it's not just a harem. It's Myrth's harem. So the decor tends heavily towards red and black... not that great for mental health, if I recall.

But I guess the free hats and possibility of free alcohol might help people overcome that...

But of course, red and black are my favourite colours. Really!

Oh there are plenty, a lot of whom are discredited based on looks alone.

I have found, over the course of time in which I’ve been able to see it clearly as thus, that there really isn't a great deal of unintelligent people in the world - men or women. There are a lot of people who make poor choices, but that is not at all a sign of their intellectual capacity.

I have come to think, reflecting upon this, that sometimes the people we consider unintelligent may well be much smarter than we give them credit for - but in different ways. Even those lacking in education, can display remarkable aptitude for the so-called 'simple' things in life that we all ought to regard in the highest order. Aren’t these the things that the more socially acclaimed as 'intelligent' among us seem to forget? I have yet to see a poor man not made richer than his wealthiest comparable for the love of his family, nor the richest man made poorer for a lack of love in his?

These forms of power, money, fame, status - come at a high premium. Who are we to judge those left at the bottom rungs of what we consider a hierarchical society? Who are we to say that despite their simple nature, these aren't in fact the most intelligent of us all?

I wonder often about the state of man, and think that perhaps despite our better interests, our education - indeed our intellect - has cost us more than we have gained by it in places. I think as people in general, we all share a relatively quantifiable and similar intellectual capacity – but we specialize in different areas of knowledge, right down to the most ‘simplistic’ among us.

That was a bit random... no offence... it was interesting to read... when i said intelligent i was referring to general intelligence (i e nerdy intelligence) not wisdom (not that having one assumes that you do/don't have the other)

Well, I thought it suited the direction the thread had taken, really I was just trying to show my standpoint on an issue that has been plauging my thoughts.

I do beleive that looks are sometimes an unfortunate bypass for people when looking at a persons intelligence though. And the intelligence of good looking women is often overlooked by those who are only capable of seeing their outer beauty, just as the shoddily dressed are often over looked for that.

This is not just with women of course either. One of my grandfathers, for instance, was not 'properly' educated, an Italian, forced into changing his name after the world wars. Due to the same intolerance (there was a lot of anti-Italianism after the wars) he was raised isolated in a homestead. He was out on his own at a very, very early age and had to work in order to survive.

School, in such a situation, was not an option. But he taught himself, how to speak english, how to weld, how to drill pipeline, how to understand mineralogy - and on and on... He came from nothing, and he looks like that to this day. A broken down, toothless old cowboy (and don't get me back on the perversion of that good word). To most people, his decrepid shabby appearance is just how they judge him... even by the fact that he wears a cowboy hat. People just assume things, when in fact - hes one of the most charming, intelligent, understanding and tolerant people I have ever met.

To me, despite his outer appearance, this makes him one of the most beautiful men on the planet. His scars and weathered skin are a testament to his endurance, his fortitude, indeed even his intelligence. So he may not be able to quote shakespeare - but I'll bet he could teach an acedemic a thing or two about how to survive, about what it means to live. There are all kinds of 'smart' in my books these days - general intelligence, wisdom or otherwise.

Intolerance, and poor judgement are not a local things - they are widespread, and it saddens me deeply to think that.

As far as the way you look, to me - I can say youre beautiful without even seeing a picture simply for being as smart as you've already displayed. :)

In my rather subjective experience, Adelaidians tend to be more passive aggressive than other Australians. Mind you, I come from Tasmania, so obviously I'm dumb and have two heads and my mother is my uncle or something...

What's the difference between a 'Nice Guy' (tm), and a nice guy?

Here, have some examples.

ng: opens doors for anyone who looks like they need help, or just everyone
NG: opens doors for hot girls so they'll think he's polite

ng: becomes friends with a girl because he thinks she's interesting
NG: becomes friends with a girl hoping to eventually get layed

Does that start to show the difference? In one case it's being nice for the sake of being nice, in the other it's being nice because they're spineless, maipulative jerks.

Oh, and just for kicks: www.sluggy.com Bun-Bun's back, and this time he's got a pirate hat.

For the unenlightened, Bun-Bun is a lop-eared rabbit that watches Baywatch, consumes 151 proof rum, and wields a switchblade. Earlier in the comic he continually tried to kill Santa.

*Shaed politely points out that Hades has got her confused with Persephone, and asks him if he can give her a lift to London instead*

And yes, yes I know. Persephone wasn't 'never seen again'. Shut up, smart people.
*Hades tells her that he know's she's not Persephone, 'cause Persephone let him come up here* :D

Yeah i get what you mean about people judging for instance if you dont have brand name clothes people act like your not as smart (whats with that?!!!)

My grandad sounds similar because although he can't speak english brilliantly he knows a lot about life and he plays an amazing game of chess..

lol thanx 4 ur compliment i could say the same to you (well apart from beautiful cos ur a guy...) cuz you definitely know what you're talking about when you post on here... have a cookie :)
