tattoos are all the rage nowadays. it seems as though everyone has one, or is getting one. i want to know-
are you inked or not?
how many do you have?
any in secret places?
any in places that you can't keep secret?
describe them if you want(meanings, also)
your favorite one?
planning on getting some?
not into tats? why not?
[you can copy and paste the ??'s into your reply, if you like]

personally, i have been extensively inked for 8 years. i just started my forearm. luckily, i have a job where a fully tattooed female doesn't raise any eyebrows. i will post in a bit with the above questions answered.

* no one will be attacked for a "politically uncorrect" [ahem] tattoo. got it guys? art is art.

i dont really like tattoos, only because everyone wants them so bad. that and 99% of them are stupid and generic. if i ever got a tattoo, it would be something all "personal and meaningful" and whatnot.

heh. well, theres that and theres the fact i have this horrible paranoia of needles.. who knows.

I have a tattoo on my right upper arm over the bicep. Its a tribal knott sun symbol. Currently it is just black with shading, but I might add either red or blue to it, won't cost too much, maybe $25. I want to add a symbol for either crazy or fire, not sure what one.

I am planning on some sort of Large tattoo on my back, starting with smaller ones, that work into a bigger one. Maybe a large cross or something like that. Was thinking about getting each of my childrens chinese zodiac worked into the big picture.

First, I would like to join the Masons and get the Masonic symbol.

I would also like the Greek letter "Psi" below that.

Funny, amongst my friends I was the only one to whom a tattoo appealed. I'd been wanting one for years, and at some point decided to get one while Stateside. And I did.
My tattoo is unique...I wanted a dragon but they always looked so fierce so I asked for a custom cross of two in a shop and ended up with this (http://g.myspace.com/00047/25/69/47669652_m.jpg) on my lower back.
It's bigger than I intended, and wearing low cut trousers and/or short tops...which most of them are, it gets revealed more than I intended. Also it apparently has another connotation to have an arrow like symbol there :headbang:
But I wouldn't exchange it for the world...or my parents kicking me out the house when they find out.

No tattoos. No real interest in getting one.

Tattoos, in certain places, I do find extremely sexy though. The middle of the lower back, or on the hip bone... alot of tattoos is a turn-off for me, though.

I don't have any tattoos, although I might get one if I find a design I like.

My partner designs tattoos sometimes, not professionally or anything, but she has gotten money for some of them. She's helped out a local tattoo parlor with design 3 times, and got paid 2 of them.

i have the name of my first and only true truer truest lover on my breast,in a heart, that has fire burning behind it. the fire at some point will circle the n****e all the way.

*i have 13 ants crawling up my leg, they represent the 13 kids in my family.
*i had a stick figure, and a stupid saying about tall girls on my inner thigh, but i covered it up with an ourobourough- a serpent eating it's own tail. that goes round my leg.
*i have an angel on my back shoulder, its says mother- for my ma
*my back is still in progress. it is 2 dragons, one with horns, head across the top of my shoulder, breathing peacock feathers down my armthe peacock feathers start out colorless, and gradually fade into brilliance. the second dragon is twisting around the first, and the head ends on my lower back. this dragons head becomes skinless with the skull bones showing twards the front of the face. he also has a koi fish in his mouth.
* i have a praying mantis on the back of my neck.
* i have eddie, from iron maiden, on my ass. he is clutching an hourglass.
* i have fire that appears to have the consistency of water tattooed pretty low, in the front.the flames reach up to a dead hand, that clutches a syringe.
* my left lower forearm is a phoenix, whos tail wraps around my arm. the head is on my innerwrist. this sleeve will be black and grey, and filled in with anatomical medical illustrations of different organs, bones, and the like.
*my best friends signed my outer top thigh, and its tatted on. they all have the same one, in different places.i have had these friends for over 20 years.
*underneath the curve of my right breast, it says "angry for a day, effective for life"
* i plan on finishing my other arm with different types of snakes and skulls,in different stages of decay. that wont be for a long time.
they are of great personal meaning, and very very important to me. artistic self indulgence is a pretty big theme of mine,so the tattoos fit in with that.

Not planning on it- but if I had an experience I'd want to remember, and was able to symbolize it with a tat, I'd do it.

not into tats? why not?
Too much pain for something that will fade and sag in time. Forget it if I gain weight (and since I'd want kids that is in my future) Tats stretch out and look strange after weight gain and loss. They're perm, so I'd have to be 100% sure I'd want it on me forever. I like change, and hate things that stay the same I'd get bored of it fairly quickly.

Though I could see myself getting a blood tattoo- that way it's a tat that I don't have to keep for the rest of my life (It lasts about a year from what I've heard, then fades)

I have one on my left ankle that myself and my brother drewup and inked after my father passed away....it has 2 large tribal "lines" on the outside that curve around a circle in the middle....in the circle has a cross and flames on top and bottom of the circle.....I have one on my left chest that has a tribal background and gemini symbol on that...the color of the symbol fades from gold to white(self-explanatory)....on my left arm I have a broken circle that the halves loop each other(meaning broken circles of trust can be mended;just in different ways)....last I have a double star on my right arm....the main "star"(sun)is in old stone form....then their is a 5 color sun burst in the middle of that....kinda showed how hope can explode from deep within and you can do anything.....That is all for now....my wife and I are expecting our first child in Sept and I will get a tat for that milestone as well...And I agree only get inked if it is for a good reason...not to be cool...or whatever....think ahead...find a great free-hand artist and see what original work he can do....And last but not least....you get what you pay for.

yup

how many do you have?

just one.

any in secret places?

not unless my inner forearm is a secret place.

any in places that you can't keep secret?

surprisingly, my parents managed to not notice my tat ALL SUMMER LONG, even though it is bold, black, and easily visible on my inner left forearm. i never expected to be able to keep it secret, but i guess i can...they didn't notice it until i showed it to my aunt right in front of them.

i do keep it covered at work, though, usually by wearing long-sleeve shirts. just a professional thing, mostly.

your favorite one?

i can't pick a favorite until i get a few more :).

planning on getting some?

maybe; can't decide on what others i want, though i really really really liked getting the one i have.

hmm, that doesn't bode well for me, in that case. :) i already have trouble reminding myself that i can't afford to spring for new piercings every week, and tats just add to the problem.

luckily, i have a job where a fully tattooed female doesn't raise any eyebrows.
i'm in a relatively permissive field when it comes to body art (biomedical sciences) but i haven't decided if i will go academic or sell-out to the corporate world for more money...if i want to go corporate i have to keep the body art on the DL for a little longer, so i am waiting on it.

4 different color studies of an andy warhol self portrait.
That sounds badass. Which portrait, this one (http://hirshhorn.si.edu/collection/gallery/images/400/warhol.jpg) or this one (http://www.rcs.k12.va.us/csjh/8th_03/meganG/warhol.jpg)? Another? I'm just assuming it was one of his two best self-portraits.

so how do they make the branding iron? custom designs, or just some to choose from? how was the healing process? did it hurt like a bitch or what?

I'm noy sure what the material is, but it bends easily. My brothers friend owns 23rd Street Piercing. He had just gone someplace out of state to learn and I was sort of a test case. Hurt like a bitch. I told him I should have gotten drunk first, but he said he wouldn't have done it if I was. Healing wasn't too bad, but it really itched.

I have one on my left ankle that myself and my brother drewup and inked after my father passed away....it has 2 large tribal "lines" on the outside that curve around a circle in the middle....in the circle has a cross and flames on top and bottom of the circle.....I have one on my left chest that has a tribal background and gemini symbol on that...the color of the symbol fades from gold to white(self-explanatory)....on my left arm I have a broken circle that the halves loop each other(meaning broken circles of trust can be mended;just in different ways)....last I have a double star on my right arm....the main "star"(sun)is in old stone form....then their is a 5 color sun burst in the middle of that....kinda showed how hope can explode from deep within and you can do anything.....That is all for now....my wife and I are expecting our first child in Sept and I will get a tat for that milestone as well...And I agree only get inked if it is for a good reason...not to be cool...or whatever....think ahead...find a great free-hand artist and see what original work he can do....And last but not least....you get what you pay for.
nice tattoos. Fantastic advice! :)

This is true. If I was to compare the pain of getting my foot inked to that of breaking my arch in when I was 7, I would say the arch was worse.

But having to dance pointe for 5 hours right after getting my foot done was bad, I just kept saying "But its so worth it" over and over...

Bottle. the inner forearm is wicked. i know a guy who got matching ones on each arm, one blue, one black. they were these tribal masks. parents are clueless. when i got my back of neck tattoo, my mom thought it was manic panic hair dye that ran down. when i got my forearm done though, she had a stroke. then she told me i will never have a husband. my dad says- sure she will,he will just be a colorful, tattooed freak like our daughter! my mon says, "i can't wait to see the grandkids"

I wanted a celtic knot, but the guy said it was too complex.
that's very strange, my buddy with a tattoo shop says tribal work is boring but really simple. you just lay down a sensile and then trace, its not even paint by numbers cuz its generally all black. then only problem i could see would be if you wanted it so small and detailed that the lines would all blur together but that's gotta be really fine work for that to be a problem(or alot of years and too much sun) you can certainly tattoo much finer than you can brand or do other scarification.

you definitely don't want to get tattooed drunk, it thins the blood and you're more apt to bleed some of the color out, branding shouldn't matter but a respectable artist won't deal with drunk people cuz they tend to make bad spur of the moment descision and also tend to be a pain in the ass to deal with.

I don't currently have any tat's, but I'm glad you asked! lol
I don't have any yet because of this deathly fear of needles-- I'd say it is full-blown phobia levels-- can't even watch someone get stuck with one on TV.

However, about a year ago, a friend and I were talking about them. I decided on what I would get and where. It would have to be something I would still like for the rest of my life. And since cars are my passion for as long as I can remember, and I don't see that ever changing, I'd get car logos. They would only be logos that are pictures, not words, so unfortunately Bugatti is out. :( The very first one, without a doubt would be the logo for-- you guessed it-- Lagonda, right over my heart. That way I figure if I ever go to interview for a job at Aston Martin and they ask why they should hire me, I'd take off my shirt, show them the tattoo, and say "it's over my heart because it's #1 in my heart and always will be" and hopefuly that would be unconventional and passionate enough to get me the job.

I would get the Bentley winged B logo in between my shoulder blades, like the wings of an angel/demon/anything else that has wings out the back. Then I would get the Aston Martin logo at the small of my back. I'd get the Maserati Trident and the Ferrari Prancing Horse on either bicep, the Lambo Bull on the other side of my chest, BMW roundel just above or below the navel, the Jag and Audi logos on my thighs--- how often do you see a tat on a thigh anyway? And I would also get 2 symbols from a certain album on my ankles.

All of this would be symmetrical. (I've heard that once symmetry gets a hold of you, it'll have you forever-- it's true.) Plus you wouldn't be able to see them under most circumstances, so if I went someplace tats wouldnt be apporopriate, I could easily cover them up. Some might say I'd be a walking billboard for car marques, I say anyone who saw them would know what my passion in life is.

I thought about getting the outline of Mass with the state flag colored into it. Like I said, I want a lot of ink, but I need the money first. The back tat comes first, then the bicep, then the Sox on the calf, then my other ideas.

I dont see how that is norge nazi (not that I know what the hell that is but I dont have any nazi affiliations) and what are you talking about ving?.... I dont see where that comes in. Emperor and windir are pretty good but I havent heard of ulver, I will get some as soon as I get round to it though.
Varg (Christian) Kvisling Larsson Vikernes is a nazi, no question about it. burzum isn't a bad band at times if you can get beyond the fact that varg is a convicted killer and a vocal white supremacist/nazi. listen all you want, but i would get his symbols permanently inked into my flesh unless i agreed with his ideology.

ohh that makes me feel better =)

It is based off a celtic cross pendant I saw some where. But I got my brother to draw it how I liked it in photoshop. So I think it will be fair unique... unless some one comes up with the same idea as me some how.... or some asshole ripps it off the site and gets it stuck into his flesh.

I want to do my full back.

I'll probabally start next fall with this design: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/halydia/Random%20Stuff/snowflake.jpg
as an outline in black just below the bottom of my neck (low enough to hide with a shirt but not that low.)

I'm a pretty "atypical" tattoo lover, I've been told. I'm not heavy into any scene(s) and am relatively conservative in dress and such. If/when I do end up going for it, I'll do my whole back over time.

I don't have any, I'm thinking about getting surf-style flowers (you know the ones I mean!) on my back or a daisy chain around my ankle (although that'd really hurt). It may not be super-original but I'd like to think it's not totally generic. I also think sometimes even generic tattoos look nice. My friend has a rose on the base of her back and it's really pretty.

One on my right outer leg (small pink elephant) above my ankle and another (sun/moon) on the right side of my stomach near my hip. Got the first one at age 18 along with my friend Michelle and the other at 22 with my friend Kim. I don't even notice them anymore unless I'm wearing a dress somewhere .. then the ankle one pops out at me. If I had to do over again I probably wouldn't have gotten a tatto.

i hate ass crack tattoos . thats why i got one on my crotch :D

if you want a tat there, fine, but wear a shirt that covers, you know?

It's not so easy finding the shirt that covers. :( Also the lower back is the flattest place imo. When I got mine I wasn't thinking 'ooh it's pointing down there with it's tail.' but 'I want it to look like it's flying up my back.' It's not my faut people are sexually obsessed enough to look at it the wrong way... :( :( :( :( :(

would one on the shoulder blade hurt? I just migt have too much fun with it then, and about how much would it cost? not too many places around where I live.

It hurts apparently if you have bone underneath or lots of muscle. Same way injections hurt if there's muscle.

I have 10 tats...I had my first one 10 years ago. I admit it's crap, and will get something put over it eventually. I'm going in for a new design on the 17th.

I really dislike people who have the Tazmanian devil cartoon character or the superman symbol tattoo, that is MEGA generic.

All my tattoo ideas are points of personal pride. Whether or not they're original, I don't much care. But they're all representative of things I'm proud to be part of.

I should ask my cousin to give me a Chinese name seeing I helped her choose an English...

Two. Around my left ankle is a knotwork snake that is biting its tail. On my left bicep are 4 celtic eagles knotted together and into/around a tree of life - right now it is only outline. I need to have it touched up and shaded.

I hear ya there. The ones I want may not be original either, but they are all things I feel strongly about. They are on things that you can go out and buy-- granted some of the things cost over $200,000. So it's not like you see all of them everyday. Hell, I can still probably count on 1 hand the # of times i've seen an Aston Martin in the metal outside of an auto show or showroom. I just hope the cost of all the tats don't cost as much as an Aston.

I don't get the Chinese characters or tribal armbands either. They look ok on some people, but it's hardly something special.

Ive been drawing flash art for about ten years now, and I have so many things that Id love to have tatt'd. Theres a few in particular that I really like and have designated 'spots' for them. I'm thinking about picking up a scanner soon, if I do Ill post some images to be dissected in here! :D

Like the Red Sox. I bet a thousand Red Sox Nation members have a tattoo somewhere commemorating the greatest team in existance, so I know it's not original. But it's still something I'm intensely proud of, so original or not, I want to show off my pride.

My problem is that I'm terribly indescisive. I have too many good ideas for tattoos, and have yet to apply even one of them. I have an artist who has told me that he likes my work, and hes amped to get some done - but Ive been a bit of a holdout for that "perfect" idea.

Tattoos are a personal choice and I'm not suggesting that anyone not get them, but for me personally, I have never seen a woman who I thought looked better with a tattoo than without. Nor a man for that matter.

I do know many people who regretted getting a tattoo about five years down the road.
