My question is this:
What is it that makes white people uncool? Eminem seems to be the exception, but other than that, why is it that white people can't be cool?

His father was GOD( and he doesnt submit to any earthly religons) True the actual murdering was done by the Romans but if the jews never wished for his death in the first place Jesus would have never been killed, and so jews take the blame becuase they have instigated the death of christ. BTW it wasnt the Romans who were against his concepts of love for all it was the high jewish council which was against his ideals becuase the ancient kingdom of israel was an extremely racist nation which viewed itself as the most superior culture as opposed to all those around them. Jesus taught tolerance of all and agreed that the jews should integrate and respect the Roman empire. But tolerance is something the jews just wouldnt stand for.

The word 'black' is problematic because it's associated with death, evil, darkness, and all around negativity. 'African American' is often innacurate since not all blacks are African, and not all Africans are black. And of course, not all blacks are American.

But to answer the question, I don't know. I don't seem to have much say in what's cool. I somewhat bothers me that the word 'white' has become a synonym for un-cool. What does one mean when they say, "Dude, you're so white!"?

Agreed. The reason I posted this thread was to answer the question. Everything that we (the whites) do seems to some way copy a trend from another race. Things like JLo, Pokemon, and hip hop are all popular things. Little girls, of all races, are paying so much money for these things especially white upper class kids, but all of the creations are from other races. The whitest sport I can think of is golf and yet that is only really popular because of an Asian/Black kid named Tiger. Tennis is a good example of a white popular failure. Think about it, how many kids run around wearin tennis get ups? Compare that to the number of kids wearing soccer cleats (football in Europe) a game that originated with the Huns. So what is it that makes white people so "uncool"?

Actually, to be far the Crusades would have probably have happened anyway without the existence of Christianity. And in general the activities of the Inquisition have been greatly over exagerated (and DF would have a point if he said that it was a protestant plot).

how about heavy metal? punk rock? grunge? rock? (yes, i know it was partially stolen from black blues musicians, but it was blended with country, which is very white)

but then i have a friend who is half greek and half jamacian (apparantly his mother is really dark too) and he's pastier than me, and i'm probably nearly half british (well, probably less... my mom's side is scottish, irish, welsh, french, german, swedish and finnish, my dad's is irish and eastern european) i'm also quite tan. Well, that -is- cool... unless you're doing it for the sake of eternal reward, in which case, you're as bad as Eminem. He just gets his reward for sure, right now, rather than maybe, later. And just for the note of this thread, I'm visibly white, but have a whole swarm of nationalities. Most of them are European or descended from Europe (Canada, France, England, Wales, Scottland, Ireland, Germany), but I also have two doses of Native American. With proper preperation, I can be visibly any of these, and espouse a cultural bias on to myself to claim some sort of false 'cool' factor by conforming. I can even fake a few other cultures readily enough (I've recently been accused of being Greek and Armenian).

I could also readily fit in to a good dozen sub-groups, (I could pull Emo or Goth off, Biker if I had a bike, and I could pose in a good number of fandoms that I've been vaguely associated with).

I instead choose to be me, without any one culture defining my choices or tastes.

Gets me plenty of action and attention, so obviously not the worst way to live.

Except I believe that all people should be judged as individuals, not for what that person's respective race has accomplished. You're white? Great, I don't care what whites in the past have accomplished. You're black? Great, I'll see you as an individual, not as a symbol for what your race has accomplished. Likewise, does it matter what Jews may or may not have been responsible in the past? I know quite a few Jews. None of them seem to go around celebrating the fact (and I don't literally mean "fact") that they killed Christ.

But to answer the topic question, it's mostly because of the current state of pop-culture. Hip-Hop dominates pop culture presently. This is due to exploitation from the media (radios, MTV, etc). Hip-Hop is the cool thing in pop-culture. Hip-Hop is often associated with black artists (obviously). As such, black people are often instantly considered to be cool because they are representatives of the current dominate pop-culture. And because white people are not black (duh), they are generally not part of the hip-hop culture, and thus, uncool. That's my theory anyway :/

I guess you have to be an old fart like me to see the trends in folks. Every war brings a shift in politics (view point USA). At the beginning you have stuff such as the rather racist and childish comments surging in both media and general conversation. These folks gain a little power because people are scared which leads them to follow anyone with a strong opinion. So you get the Christian right wingers calling for blood and you get the skinheads and the Nazi and what other zealots that happen to be floating around jostling for power positions. After several thousand GIs loose their lives, after the ecconomy bombs out, after various nukes get repointed in our direction, folks back off a little because things weren't easy and tidy like the zealots claimed. This entire nonsense about Christ killers and which race is cool(er) is inane. No race is cool or uncool. It is an individual thing. Some people are nasty and some aren't. You have to judge by the individual. Like I said, I am an old fart and I am not very good at "flame wars" or what have you. But I have seen alot of folks live and die in my time, most of them were good people. It takes a hell of a lot of work to hate some one. (By the way to all you Christians out there, read your book, go over the 10 commandments again. Don't hate, don't kill...that sort of thing). Those folks that insist on hating someone or something are afraid of it. It takes a strong man to look at what he hates and to realize that hate is just fear. Well, the white world has been more successful than the rest for some centuries now. I think its natural that they have grown somewhat arrogant, and too full of themselves, if one may risk a generalization, just human nature, I guess. If the industrial revolution had taken place in China for instance and the Chinese were the superpower today, I dont think they would have been any different.

Well, frankly, that's part of how we GOT people of different appearances.

I, for instance, tend to have a thing for women of Asian descent (My ex is half-Malay, my makeout partner has a teeeensy bit of Vietnamese, and I met her in the Japanese club...). I also tend to have a thing for women who have similar TRAITS, but aren't actually of that nationality. As such, I tend to have a thing for emo chicks and goth girls as well (at least your typical germanic-ish ones), and Native Americans from certain mixes. Dark Hair, Pale Skin, a less-than-massive bust, and quirky but witty personalities, and I'm in heaven. That said, my makeout partner got my attention -before- she dyed her hair black from a light brown, and my best, sexiest friend is a natural blonde, and is damned sexy no matter what color she dyes her hair (which is pretty much constantly).

It doesn't keep me from appreciating other traits and nationalities, but the further from my preffered traits the less my instincts respond.

Heck, I'd date a blonde, busty near-black African woman despite her being about the opposite of my 'reaction' traits, so long as I enjoyed her personality, I just wouldn't be fighting off my hormones quite so much, at least early in the relationship.

Around where I live, the quintissential minority are Native Canadians (about 15% of the city's population), we only have a few hundred blacks, maybe five hundred or so Asians and maybe five Jewish families. I live in a small city in Manitoba, so that's the context I am typing from.

Secondly, 'race' is as much of a social concept as it is biological, in fact, the whole notion of biological races is dubious at best. The genetic relationships of different human populations is considerably more complex than black, or white, or yellow, what have you. Furthermore, if you believe in evolution, the cradle of humanity was Africa (Tanzania to be specific), so at one point, the entire human race was black. The reason why some people have what we call 'white' or 'black' racial characteristics is due to (on the evolutionary scale) last-minute adjustments to adapt to environments.

The reason why black people are 'black' (or dark brown) is due to melanin production, which is natural sunblock. Caucasians are paler due to living in colder climates and pale skin absorbs Vitamin D more readily from sunlight, which is sometimes at a premium in the winter. People of European descent tend to be hairier than others due to colder climates. None of this has a major effect on individual human value. It just means black people might not have to slather on the sunscreen as much as I might.

And about the Jews and Jesus ... that's only one way to read the Bible, and that's only if you read it as absolute, inerrant fact, which I don't. Jesus's teachings are rooted heavily in Judaism and Christianity only became seperate from Judaism later when people like Paul began to convert Gentiles (or non-Jews). Yes, you can quote the Bible. Which actually raises a good point. That the Bible contains contradictory messages, because different people wrote it with different viewpoints. The Bible supports many things that we would view as morally repugnant today, which is why I don't think of it as literal absolute truth, which is not to say that there isn't truth in it, or value in Christianity. Far from it, I actually think Christianity has been on balance, a positive force in the world. But it's also a religion that is, in large part, created and propagated by imperfect human beings and is imperfect. Religions aren't revealed and stay the way they are. They change as times change.

Darwin said what he said because he didn't have access to twentieth century science. Modern science does point towards a singular ancestor, whether or not that means some apes in Africa or Adam. By the way, I believe that the first 12 chapters of Genesis are essentially myth, which is not to say they are without value. Myths are an essential part of any religion and many non-religious viewpoints. They can tell us a lot about a society and some moral truths at the same time.

And that quote had to do with unbelievers, or non-Christians, true. Nothing to do with race, for one thing. And during Paul's time, most Christians WERE of Jewish background. Furthermore, Jews and Christians worship the same God and revere the same holy texts. Christianity came out of Judaism, so an assault on Judaism is really an assault on Christianity as well. Paul argued that the Torah laws shouldn't bind non-Jewish Christians, who did eventually become the majority, but he was of Jewish descent himself and seems to have personally followed Torah regulations.

And who's ahead of the game? I suggest you read a book called 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond that gives a lot of explanation of why it was Europe, and not, say, Africa or Asia that emerged as the huge colonial power. Admittedly, he focuses a bit too much on the environmental, rather than some of the cultural explanations, but it's not a matter of racial superiority.

Ironically, the 'superior' Europeans managed to colonize the Americas in large part because they were filthy and disease-ridden by comparison to Native peoples. Some 90% of the America's native population was killed off within a few centuries of contact, mostly because of disease. I won't list them because it's basically every infectious disease that would come to mind, most notoriously smallpox, but there's a lot of them.

Furthermore, if you're going to mention IQ tests or something like that, IQ isn't an exact measurement of intelligence. Its value is rather in question, and there's a lot of refutations of those classic findings, in which blacks are found to have lower IQ's. For one thing, education factors into IQ tests, and on average, African-Americans, especially back in the day when these studies were taken, didn't have access to the same educational opportunities as Americans of European descent.

An example of how a cultural change can effect these things is best used taken Asians. Early IQ tests among Asian-Americans (although I'm sure the researchers called them all number of epithets behind their backs) showed that they had an IQ rather lower than the average for 'whites' (about 90 or so, and I'll get to this in a moment). Modern IQ testing tends to show an average IQ slightly higher (about 102-105) than the 'white' average (100).

I think education in large part, as well as the relative lessening of prejudice explains this dramatic change in IQ tests. I feel that a test comparing middle-class African-Americans to middle-class European-Americans (might as well use the same terminology) would not show a very different result, if at all. Testing poor kids from the ghettos with rich kids in $15,000 a year private schools is patently unfair.

By the way, the highest scores on IQ tests, flawed as they are, are among Ashkenazic Jews (European Jews, making up almost all American Jews) at about 110-115, or about one average deviation above the mean. I don't think this means that Jewish people are smarter as much as it signifies the great importance placed on learning by them. Although one might argue that you'd have to be smart in able to survive the czar, Hitler and modern anti-Semites and prosper in spite of them.

And now, to 'whiteness'. Well, that was and is an idea in flux. What makes a person 'white'? European ancestry? Well, in the 19th century in the United States, there was considerable debate over whether Hungarians, South Italians or even the Irish should be considered 'white'. In modern Haiti, someone much darker than your (former now?) Secretary of State Colin Powell might be called 'white'. The 'one drop' rule is an American concept and doesn't follow in many other societies. Race is as much a social concept as a biological one, probably more so.

To me cool is being responsible, law-abiding, taking care of your responsibilities, raising your family the right way, and being a good Christian.

I agree with those who say that this thread is becoming somewhat nauseating. Firstly, 'coolness' is a subjective, socially defined adjective and individual value can only be judged on the individual level. Around where I live, the quintissential minority are Native Canadians (about 15% of the city's population), we only have a few hundred blacks, maybe five hundred or so Asians and maybe five Jewish families. I live in a small city in Manitoba, so that's the context I am typing from.

Secondly, 'race' is as much of a social concept as it is biological, in fact, the whole notion of biological races is dubious at best. The genetic relationships of different human populations is considerably more complex than black, or white, or yellow, what have you. Furthermore, if you believe in evolution, the cradle of humanity was Africa (Tanzania to be specific), so at one point, the entire human race was black. The reason why some people have what we call 'white' or 'black' racial characteristics is due to (on the evolutionary scale) last-minute adjustments to adapt to environments.

The reason why black people are 'black' (or dark brown) is due to melanin production, which is natural sunblock. Caucasians are paler due to living in colder climates and pale skin absorbs Vitamin D more readily from sunlight, which is sometimes at a premium in the winter. People of European descent tend to be hairier than others due to colder climates. None of this has a major effect on individual human value. It just means black people might not have to slather on the sunscreen as much as I might.

And about the Jews and Jesus ... that's only one way to read the Bible, and that's only if you read it as absolute, inerrant fact, which I don't. Jesus's teachings are rooted heavily in Judaism and Christianity only became seperate from Judaism later when people like Paul began to convert Gentiles (or non-Jews). Secondly, the Gospel of Matthew, probably the most anti-Semitic (in our modern perception) of the Gospels, was written right after the Christians were removed from the synagogues. Because, before then, it was understood that the Christians, or Nazarenes, were a Jewish sect.

Furthermore, about that claim of Jews being the 'children of Satan', firstly, I don't take the Bible as inerrant, secondly, could the 'children of Satan' have contributed as much to our society as the Jews have? In spite of millennia of presecution, the Jewish faith (or people, because what makes one Jewish is a very complicated matter) has contributed enormously to our society.

I believe that Jesus was in fact Jewish and resent the fact that this logical fact has to be 'covered up'. In any case, he was raised in a Jewish family and lived and died as a practicing Jew in Palestine, ie, Jewish central. If he wasn't Jewish and not meant to teach to primarily Jews, why Palestine and not, say, Rome?

Did the Jews kill him? Well, the answer isn't exactly 'no', the truth is that Jesus was executed by a segment of the Jewish temple elite, plus some Pharisees (not all of them), but that Pilate had to at least give passive acquisance to his execution. All of the players involved lived in the 1st century CE and it's stupid to blame modern Jews for an execution, one of about 100,000 in that area in that century.

Furthermore, I thought the belief of practicing Christians was that Jesus died for the redemption of humanity, that our sins made his death necessary. Did he not say, 'forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do?' (if mostly about the Roman centurions) If that is the fact, then nobody and everybody was responsible for his death. And we should be forgiving not only Pilate and Caiaphas but also Judas, who, if this is true, was a tool of fate.

Oh yeah, and I think using Jesus's life and teachings to justify race-based hatred is absolutely nauseating. And now, brothers and sisters in NationStates, I would like to close this rambling sermon with a quote from the Apostle Paul.

"Cool" originated as a buzz word in Jazz about 50 years ago along with other "hip" words that were unique to that culture. That culture was almost entirely a black institution. This is not to mean that whites didn't have their say. Men like Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan proved to be a large part of that Jazz movement, and were, in fact, involved in the "Birth of the Cool" along with Miles Davis and company.
