We do try. When Randy/Lex first came on the scene, everyone tried arguing with him. I did too. But after two months of the exact same attitude about everything, it was obvious that nothing we said made any impact upon him. The same thing can be said about TRA. When he first came around, liberals and conservatives alike came together to try and point out his fallacies. But what do people do now? They ignore his threads. Why? Because it became painfully obvious that nothing we said was going to change his mind one bit. You can't convince a fish to get out of water.

I guess this is probably true. Well, I'm sure it is true. I just always feel like it's a personal failing when I can't reach people. Admittedly, I haven't been trying to do too much of that on this thread because it caught me on an odd bounce, but still, like Crownguard said, these are the exact people (and they exist on both sides of every issue) that seemingly deserve the most effort. Perhaps I'm a masochist or working off middle-class guilt issues or something.

I doubt it is even on the radar of many Americans. I was watching several US news channels on satellite, and the issue was hardly covered. Just a tiny announcement between Michael Jackson being a pervert and the sports news.
Fox News was very into it.
Their coverage was hardly "OMG, this means an alliance is taking shape which will eventually seek to destroy us with nukes!" Not even close.

Chuckles* The purpose of news media is to make money, not report news. Any good cynicist knows that. And when ignorance is a majority throughout the Earth, wonder where the cash is.....

In that case the cash is in Texas. I don't live there.

Very true, I'm watching Fox News as I type this and all they said was that this new and expanded European Union has "the potential to rival" the U.S. economically.

Maybe I missed something, but I would say that Fox would be close to that quoted opinion, if you are telling Lex that Fox is a bad place to receive your news. Basically you said Fox WASNT like that....

Dont patronize me, considering some of the posts I saw earlier by you.

What I said was the way TG phrased it made it sound as if Fox DIDNT espouse "OMG the EU is going to nuke us".

Seeing as how he is complaining about Fox being biased, a reasonable person would find that slightly odd, no?

Oh yes, and its 2 am so maybe that MAY have something to do with it, when I had 3 hrs sleep last night.

Sorry; TG said that Fox probably wasn't being alarmist, I was trying to confirm that by describing the Fox report I had just seen that only said that the EU's expansion would increase its economic influence, which is true and unbiased. I sugest we all take two asprin and go to bed (but not Tylenol, I hear it's bad for you).

The point of all this (I think, for me anyways) is to try to keep my reputation as a civilized and intellectual debater worthy of making good points. Whether I succeeded or not remains to be answered.

Anyway, it's been great arguing that the EU is not bent on world domination and a nuclear holocaust, and I hope everyone has been reassured on this score. I will be off now. Later.

Not to get off topic but I'm genuinly interested in why you would think that Fox News sucks.
The fact that its international news coverage is typically 15 minutes in ever hour, and is usually bitesize, followed by anchors and pundits making threatening statements, sometimes on behalf of the US to foreign governments. Most recently, Canada. It's just silly. It's not news, it's like wrestling commentary.

Initially, the EU consisted of just six countries: Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom joined in 1973, Greece in 1981, Spain and Portugal in 1986, Austria, Finland and Sweden in 1995. In 2004 the biggest ever enlargement takes place with 10 new countries joining.

That is not this:

Austria
Belgium
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Germany
Greece
Finland
France
Hungary
Ireland
Italy
Latvia
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Poland
Portugal
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
The Netherlands
United Kingdom

But still, Thanks! :D

Why should the U.S. care? We already trade with all of Europe anyway?

The largest trading bloc, with more say in the WTO and a common external tariff. The demand for American goods have now decreased because cheaper labour and technology transfer in Eastern European countries will eventually flood the European markets with cheap goods. Who needs America then?Yeah, who nees them? Who is going to create all the new drugs? Who is going to create all the new innovations?
