Yup, we know about it.
Yup, it's planned.
Yup, we'll be back up in about 4 hours.

Folks, the things that happen at update include: Getting new Issues
Population growth
Updating regional influence
Checking endorsements for Delegate
... and anything I've forgotten that changes regularly. Since we're having problems with the update ...
these things will continue to fail when update fails!

We know about it. We're working on it (well, the admins are). If you're having problems with one of the above, you don't need to tell us. If it's something new (or something you reported that's since repaired itself), by all means let us know.

For those that don't want to wait...

Are the upgrades going to be anything "big", as in changing the gameplay in a significant way? If so, can you spill the beans? :p

No.

It's probably just hardware upgrades rather than major software updates... The system wouldn't need to be down for four hours (generally) if it was merely a software update.

So theoretically the system will be faster and be able to handle more things simultaneously but the actual game itself won't change.

AFAIK, anyway.

Ohh very nice.

However, poking around, I just discovered what appears to be a bug:

I logged into my puppet "Eluvataran Isles" (in case it matters the nation-name I used to log in was "eluvataran isles") and sent a telegram to "Eluvatar".

"Eluvatar" got the TG in its feed and everything, but strangely the telegram itself shows up as though from the dead nation "Eluvataran isles".

Any idea how this could have happened?

I hope I'm being helpful rather than annoying >__>.

Pretty good, nice to see the site given a more modern look. But I don't like the fixed sidebar, the main page you could scroll on but the side bar remained unchanged on the left hand side. It's just a bit of a pain having to scroll all the way back up to the top of the page to continue navigating through the site. Particulary so if there are lots of commenting on the regional page.

Ya I got the telegram error too. I think it has to do with the fact that the game is at http://69.60.14.82/ currently and not at nationstates.net

Lol intelligence reports? What in the hell?

I do, however, like the flags next to the nation names in the inboxes. Simple things like that go a long way.

My favorite addition is the non-bureaucratic revival system (flags were a nice aesthetic touch, as well). It's much more preferable to simply do it via mechanics than call attention to one's self, I think. So, thank you, developers, for that.

Glad to see the servers back up...I will have to redo some of my offsite forum features now that you guys have changed the basic game layouts (which isn't a bad thing! :))

Now one thing that is bad, is your move seems to have broken the region XML Feeds:

http://69.60.14.82/cgi-bin/regiondata.cgi/region=the_west_pacific

Loading that XML feed results in errors rendering in Firefox as it trys to put in a standard HTML 4.0 Transitional Doctype in the source code, which of course, violates the XML Standards and causes most XML Readers to have issues...

Also, while were on the subject, since it appears we have Admins looking to improve the game again, I'm wonderin if its worth perhaps sending off a wishlist for new XML Feed Features...not sure if any of them are going to be possible with the site setup but I think I'll have to forward those off to the admin email.

On second reading, I just checked the code of the XML output for the regional data and I noticed it's trying to input the new sidebar and the footer of the new layout around the xml data...so that's definently the reason it's broken.

The little flags are nice, as are the RSS feeds. What would be nice though is if there was a regional RSS feed that if you subscribed to gave you public national happenings for the entire region.

Any idea how this could have happened?Any telegram from nations with more than one word in their name is displayed as if all letters after the first were lowercase: in the case of several of my correspondents this is not the correct format, so it doesn't link to their nation page.

Thank you for all the updates! Everyone in my region appreciates them very much.

It is wonderful to finally see NS recieve updates. It will hopefully breathe new life into the game and attract new nations.

Thanks again. :D

No more frames? Heaven! Now I can finally use Stylish, the extensions for Firefox, to change the entire CSS of NationStates to something different.

Oh and by the way: thank you véry much for those RSS feeds. Now I have one extra feed to track. :D

Kuddos!

Do you think we're overdoing it with all the miniature flags? I think at least the ones next to the Founder's name on RMBs should be eliminated - what with the Delegate's flag right above it (http://69.60.14.82/00871/region=wysteria) being 2-3 times its size. Either make the flags the same size or eliminate the Founder's flag altogether, like before.

This is really more about cosmetics than technical but the new login page, and perhaps this is just a Firefox issue, looks awful.

The massive bolded Arial? font 'Login', the tiny NS logo, it may be personal opinion but I'm not a fan really.

The actual additions, lovely.

EDIT: Also, where newly added, my flag is squished, if I was an actual nation rather than simulated, I'd be highly offended by this.

Just curious... When is the game going to start using the nationstates.net domain name? instead of the IP address?

You should find that the domain nationstates.net points to our new server very shortly, possibly already. Exactly how long it takes depends on your local connectivity.

Until we're sure that pretty much everyone's got the change (a day or two), the game will display an IP addy in your address bar. If we flipped it right away, people who the DNS change hadn't reached yet would keep bouncing back and forth between the old and new server, making the game unplayable. This way everyone can get in; your address bar just looks ugly for a while.

Okay, I'm at 11 posts, so let's try this.

I'm running into a problem when trying to get into the issues page. When I click it, I get a login screen. I have cookies enabled, and logging in just seems to create duplicate sets of cookies. I'm running Konqueror 3.5.8 on KDE 3.5.8, with a Kubuntu distribution. The 69.60.14.82 address version is what's tripping me up, I believe, as nationstates.net worked fine.

Hope this helps work toward a solution.

Yeah, cookies like the ones used in NS are domain-specific, which means ones created for "nationstates.net" don't apply to any other domain, including IP addresses.

Even though nationstates.net resolves to 69.60.14.82 (for me at least) they are still considered seperate, however when in "a day or two" the IP goes back to the domain. You will have acess to all your old cookies again.

I must say, seeing an update for the game is great :) I dont know if my nation is in the middle of the changes or if they have already happened for me. some things are different, but I dont think it is all quite right. Maybe its too early to tell, but if I understand this right, we can add a nation to our dossier, and it will record everywhere they moved on the game, or posted?

Not sure, but thats what it appears.

Awesome though.

Looking Good ....
.... small problem this morning tho'

When trying to Find my Region with http://69.60.14.82/page=display_region/region=Canada I get the Message
Region Not Found
The region "Canada" does not exist.

Simply changing to http://69.60.14.82/page=display_region/region=canada (lower case Canada) fixes it but, if possible, it would save a few people a scare (and get more people logged on) if the URL worked with both upper AND lower case addresses :D

.... the Upper & Lower Case issue Does NOT affect Nation Names tho' !!

This is a small bug and more of a matter of convenience. When I'm logged in as my forum-posting nation at the NS website and I click the "forum" link, I'm not automatically logged in when I reach the forums. I don't know if there's anything you guys could do about that.

REGION The East Pacific not foundIt's not just the feeders; it's any region (or nation) that begins with an article (a, an, the). I've got the impression that it doesn't find exact matches. Only when I looked for "East Pacifi" I got "The East Pacific" as one of the results.
Tried the same with "The United Kingdom" and "United Kingdom" (no results, although I know both exist), but they both appeared in the list when I started a search for "United Kingdo"

;13541259']Until we're sure that pretty much everyone's got the change (a day or two), the game will display an IP addy in your address bar. If we flipped it right away, people who the DNS change hadn't reached yet would keep bouncing back and forth between the old and new server, making the game unplayable. This way everyone can get in; your address bar just looks ugly for a while.

I was wondering why it was doing that.

On a couple of my nations, the "[x] unaddressed issues" link doesn't appear at the bottom of the page, nor do I get the bolded "Issues ([x])" in the sidebar, although I do in fact have unaddressed issues, usually 5.

'Tis only really a minor inconvenience, but I'm not sure why it wouldn't be consistent from nation to nation.

Also, is there a way to change the fonts if you don't like them? <.< *goes to poke around in FF plugins folder*

The first, I had two puppets that I had played back to back, both had issues to deal with, when I had answered one question with an option, the next nation had the same question, and it was answered already the same way. I thought that was odd.

The second, when moving to a new region, you cannot type in the new region's name in full (get region not found) to get to the new region. Have to type in part of the region's name, using the drop down to find the link to the new region.

That starts working once your nation's number of unaddressed issues changes. That is, once a nation receives a new issue under the new code, or addresses an issue, or dismisses an issue, it will from that point onwards know how many unaddressed issues it has. But not before. So if you've had 5 sitting there for a while, you should address/dismiss one.

Similarly new telegrams: the game hasn't tracked which of your TGs were new in the past; it only knows which are new from now on.

Also, is there a way to change the fonts if you don't like them? <.< *goes to poke around in FF plugins folder*

We use more CSS now, so it's definitely easier. If something looks truly horrible, though, it may well be a (browser- and/or platform-specific) bug, and I'd be interested in seeing a screenshot.

Let me know if that turns out to be a reproducible problem. Shouldn't be, though; that'd be a huge bug.

I've deleted my cookies, cleared my cache, and restarted my browser (Firefox), all to no effect.

Is there something else I can do to fix this or is the problem not at my end?

Thanks.

From what I have been able to glean the difficulties are with NationStates and not your machine. They are in a major change over of some type, and I believe are working to remove the Bugs which have come out of the wood work.

Does it work when "www.nationstates.net" is in your address bar, but not if it's the IP address ("69.60.14.82")?

What happens when you go to the login page (with the IP addy in the address bar) and manually enter your password? Are you perhaps allowing cookies for the domain name but not the IP addy?

Hello,
I'm fairly new to this game, however I have noted some bugs that have been affecting me only after the upgrades have taken place. I hope no one has reported this yet, but here they are:

-I have to log on again after every page I visit. (I start logged on, then click "issues" have to log on again, then click "telegrams" have to log on again, etc, this is becoming really irritating, as you can imagine.

-Issues have been doubling up on me (I'm getting the same issue two days in a row) OR my selection for an issue gets chosen, and next time I come back to visit the site, I have to re do it, because it's forgotten my choice.

- (this one has been bothering me since the start) On the issue's page, where it gives you "blah blah blah" says XXX. on that persons opinion, every time you refresh or go back to the issues page, the person's name changes, it's not really anything that affects gameplay, but it does affect consistency. I had an issue once "who needs elections" says your brother Michael something...then once i had chosen my approach to the issue, it said "who needs elections..." says your brother, nancy something...I ofund that quite odd, and it's just annoying the name changes all the time. Thanks for your time, and I hope I'm not repeating known issues :S

Hmm. I'm not sure exactly what's happening here, but I suspect it's domain name related. So all should be well when we flip the switch and no longer run off the IP, which I'll do shortly.

Yeah, that happens. It's randomly generated each time. Not considered a major bug.

I have some tiny problems, I wonder if it's just me?

- I have in my settings the 'Yes' option in "Log in automatically"... Yet, after the remodelling, I always get my nation's page, but when I press anything else (Issues, Telegrams etc...), the system ALWAYS asks for my nation name and password.

- Similar thing in forums. In the old system, when you went to the forums through Nation States, you were logged in automatically. Now, I have to log in manually every time I go to the forums.

Tiny things, sure, but just thought I'd mention...

Now fixed.

Please do, thanks!

Not just you. I'm getting the same things. I suspect the first problem is because of this IP thing.

;13543706']Fixed & fixed. We won't log Delegate approvals of Proposals in National Happenings; that'd be a little too spammy.

UN voting is now via web accelerator-safe buttons.I actually liked the posting of UN votes; it makes Regional UN Delegates more accountable to their region members, and gives the latter more notice as to how their delegates have voted. So I hope you reconsider.

That said, found another sticky little error:

This one is affecting Camino and Safari on OS X, but not Firefox.

Must be something in webkit as both of them have that as the backend.

That's happening because your browser is displaying a cached version of the site with a slightly modified CSS or something; I forget exactly how it was explained to me, but it also happened to me (running Firefox). It should be fine if you refresh/clear your cache/whatever.

Not that I ever use it, but the spellcheck button doesn't work for me either. It loads the window, but there's no way to correct anything. Plus, the button for spellcheck seems to be the only one that didn't get the new design, it's still the same standard button it always was, which looks odd next to that fancy Lodge Message button. Image. (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i214/jratz91/Picture1.jpg?t=1206091823) Safari picks up my horrible spelling (purposefully in this case) but the NS spellcheck does nothing.

On the bright side, I don't have log-in issues with Telegrams and Issues plus NationStates finally plays nice with proxies so we can access it at school again! Those darn panels always tripped up any proxy we used so we could never properly access our nations (or log in for that matter).

I had the same issue, and clearing the cache seems to have worked, except that the name of my nation is now outlined to the right instead of centered (Firefox 2.0.0.12). In IE 7 it's centered.

No biggie as it's only a cosmetic issue and doesn't effect the functionality.

Thanks for the work - the new website looks good!

Some more random complaints: the UN Resolution At Vote expired early (it was supposed to go on at least to 10:30 this morning Pacific time), and as The Five Spheres and Northern Rangeria have already attested, last nite's update didn't happen.

Edit: And now NS is down, which means either they're fixing bugs or the site is just hiccoughing again.

Don't forget, the server is operating in a new timezone, so things that would have happened at 10:30 Pacific are going to be different times (earlier as the UN Vote shows), which is also going to be the case with ANY time sensetive actions the game server does, unless of course the coders choose to use UTC/GMT time to standardize it.

I'm not sure how much of a problem this is, or if this was the case before, but I've noticed that the img tag for the little UN logo for UN members in the list all nations list is missing its >.

I.E. it's printed as: </a><img src="/images/un.gif" hspace="6" alt="UN Member"</td>
(Where the </a> is from the link to the nation and the </td> is the close of the table element it's all in.)

I hope this little discovery is useful.

Yes, now that the servers have changed, what is the new update time? It used to be ~ 11:20 Pacific Time. Anybody know what it is now?

The entire update takes several hours to complete and varies in length based on server load and other variables. Pointing to a specific time and stating "Here Be The Update Time, Yarrr!" has never been an option. The update time was never that precise.

Folks, we don't need 70,457 reports that issues aren't being handled properly. Once we've got 4 or 5, it's obvious there is a bug.

As a first effort, try moving out of your region and back in. This classic bugfix for that issue may still resolve it (by 're-registering' your nation with your region), or it may be something entirely new. Regardless, it can't hurt to try it.

Frisbeeteria, I understand that overposting a problem is annoying, but I had no way of knowing that before my posting you had 70,455 reports about issues already.
Yes, I did browse the forums looking for other people with the same problem, but didn't find any.

I agree. I thought I'd give it 5 minutes or so and it's been half an hour with nothing. What's annoying is that Network Utility (the basic Mac OS tool for checking a network) can easily contact the server, but none of my browsers can load it.

I'll get an alert to them shortly, and they'll fix it when they can.

In Safari, not IE, Nationstates is having some serious issues. When the site was redirected to that IP everything was fine(on the numerical site). Then after Nationstates went back to normal on its own domain it started looking a funked out. This problem occurs only on Safari. Its hard to describe the issue, but I'll try. I'm seeing the Nationstates logo and the toolbar on the left, but the main page is blank with just a dash across it. But then if you scroll down you get to a new page(table) that doesn't have the logo or toolbar, but instead has the mainpage that you should be seeing where the dash currently is, if that makes sense. Its quite an annoyance.

NationStates (unlike jolt) actually crashes relatively rarely, maybe seriously every several months, and this is twice in as many days following the upgrade. Plus it seems to be linked to a phenomenon (vanishing telegrams) that never occured with the older version.

We definitely have a new problem that's causing the server to occasionally spiral into a locked state. Haven't tracked down what triggers it yet, but we're on it.

Display problems that you only see once, until you refresh your browser and then never again: this is caused by your browser caching the previous www.nationstates.net stylesheets and not realizing they've changed. Usually this only lasts a page or two, if you see it at all, but a refresh/reload/F5 will also fix it.

I can confirm this happening. I logged into a puppet, created a feed for it, handled issues, and about half an hour later I noticed the last login time of that nation was set to 22 hours ago. Logged in again, and the feed still had to be created! The bookmark I had for that feed had become invalid, so I re-created that. My issue choices were still there though.

I don't know if this is just me, but it seems that the most basic elements of NationStates are broken at the moment.

1- In the past two days, the nation has grown only once, instead of the usual twice a day.

I have created an open transit region called Issue Bug for people in my region to use, as a small region to reset your issues, by going in and out of. That way nobody goes trampling over the lawns of other people's regions, spamming up everyone else's regional happenings.

This region is free for the use of anyone who wants to make use of it. It's a temporary region that will be gotten rid of once its use is over with for the current situation. Just go in and then leave again right away.

The concept of getting .smallflags is attractive (up to a point) but there are many issues that I think that were not addressed:

the miniature flags are not really thumbnails, they're exactly the same flags of the nations; the same flags that are not checked for width/height and are being deployed via CSS (see bellow)
First issue: if you have disabled CSS (remember the freaking motive why CSS exists and what are the conditions for using it!), you will experience a fumblefunk of problems... you'll get a clusterfun of full-sized flags everywhere. No validation and miniatures... no point of using it.
Second issue: if the flags are exactly the same as your nation, then each one of them will have will have up-to 10 KB, which will increase your downstream usage a bloody lot. The chance of getting into a page with listings (thence, .smallflags) is pretty big... (caching is not a valid excuse, by the way)

I love the buttons. *

CSS describes the site's formatting. If you disable it, a lot more will look wrong than some flags being large.

And if your connection has trouble with a dozen or so 10KB images per page, you must be dialing in from 1988.

The average page has 7 flags, at an average of 8KB: that's 56KB, which is thereafter cached and does not need to be reloaded.

You are recommending I reschedule my time to develop and implement a feature that will have no noticeable effect for 99% of the player base, and for that 1% will make some flags load slightly faster the first time they see them.

Current status: daily updates completed successfully around March 24 2pm, March 24 6am, and March 23 4:30pm [EDIT: SEE BELOW]. These are all New York (EST) times. Apart from these, there were some partly successful daily updates that affected some nations but not all.

If your nation has received no daily issue updates at all for at least 3 days, and it is set to receive at least 1 per day (not weekday), and has not been in Vacation Mode, it's a bug I'm not aware of and you should post details here. Otherwise it's the problem I'm working on. I may have got it licked (last one went through fine without my intervention), but am not 100% sure yet.

Edit: I'm now seeing problems even with those apparently successful updates. Working on it.

I was actaully wake for the update and this is may be helpful.

The United Nations page was reporting an update...delegates changing, dead nations being cleared, everything looks normal.

BOOM: The update hits my region. The delegate shows another day and I've got another issue. (yay!)

So, I click on issue in the sidebar: It shows an issue title called "Karate Kids.."

I click the issue in order to address it and it shows

"--CONTENT--"

This seems weird so I try hitting my home page again. Now it shows my nation as it was before the update. My population is back down and when I go back to issues, it shows the previous issue as addressed, but unresolved.

I know you've been getting alot of these, but maybe this helps?

Two more problems for you guys to address... gotta make you work for your salary somehow, right? :p

1) NS apparently has two featured regions of the day, instead of just one. The featured region will switch partway through the day to a different region. Yesterday, it was "A region with no boundaries," then "The Pacific Defenders." Today it was "The 100 Acre Wood," then it changed to "0000000000000000." I don't know how big of a bug that is, but I have a nation in the Featured Region Followers and it's kind of bugging me. (Sorry for the pun.)

2) The UN Proposals search doesn't seem to work. I was on page five, and searched for the "High Powered Rifle Act," which I knew was on the first page. I clicked "search," and it just brought me back up to the top of page five. No search results or anything.

Thanks!

Since the primary problem appears to be an issue with the update, [violet] has been manually kicking off the update and watching it run. This would necessarily screw up the timings (automated + manual = two updates). Not so much a bug as the results of diagnostic testing. Once we get the issues resolved, we should return to normal timing.

;13552898']Current status: daily updates completed successfully around March 24 2pm, March 24 6am, and March 23 4:30pm [EDIT: SEE BELOW].

First, I love what you've done with the place, the new updates are universally good in my opinion. Great work.

On bugs, I seem to be having the 2 issues a day problem that several other people have already reported. Additionally, several nations from my region (Europeia) report that they are having 0 population growth and I think I am too (I usually don't keep track of my population, but after other nations mentioned it, it does seem like it hasn't went up very much in the last week or so). Finally, and I have no way to verify this, but I think the regional influence isn't updating.

Thanks.

my account is not on vacation mode and it's set to two issues per day but since the upgrade I couldn't get the issues in their usual timing. I mean I do get issues once in a while but not two per day. I guess I've got 1 in 3 days time and 3 another two days after that. Don't know if this is just caused by you people trying to fix our beloved game, but earlier today, when I logged in, it indicated that I had 2 new issues waiting for me, but when I entered the issue page, an old issue from yesterday or so was shown on the page, marked as "Pending Legislation..". Going back to the index page, it no longer reported that I had issues waiting for me either.

And as for most people here, I am set for 2 issues/day, but I rarely receive anyone at all. This goes for both my nations.

Yes, all these things are known issues. I know the problem but not yet what's triggering it. In the meantime, many nations will continue to experience irregular updates (sometimes less, sometimes more), and, conceivably, little time warps where changes to your nation vanish and reappear again.

Lots is being done to track this down. Hopefully we'll have a permanent solution soon.

Hey Violet,

Are the regional lists having trouble being updated? I was doing my usual "welcome" tg to nations, and I nearly sent one to a nation that had moved out 2 hours ago.

National Happenings

Most Recent Government Activity: 78 minutes ago

* 2 hours ago: Munnich relocated from The North Pacific to The Organizzazione.
* 3 hours ago: Munnich was founded.

Oh... He was in the "the south pacific" list and their current region's list.

Edit: didn't change after the update.

Other nations found

Jewtah - listed both in The Tempest and TSP
Ta-Boo-Boo - listed both in Liberty Alliance and TSP

Violet, i'm not sure how this is possible, but someone in TSP is giving endorsements to non-UN nations

National Happenings

Most Recent Government Activity: 6 hours ago

* 7 hours ago: FlagMuffinaslavia was endorsed by FlagThe Preponderance of Goethe.
* 14 hours ago: FlagMuffinaslavia was founded.

As of this moment, Muffinaslavia isn't part of the UN. I've seen it in a few other nations as I do my tour of the new nations.

VincentPrice, YnattirbNosnah, Sunnily, Codjie (twice), Brooklensia, cdsd2, Eibomz, StevenDonnelly, Rabbovitch, kurbekistan, Toscolano Madeno, Darke_Obsidian, (basically from page 237 on to 240)

(this'll make a nice addition to the [violet] = Max Barry thread :P) I was told back then that it might vanish as an ability at any time, I just did not expect it to happen in a "that ain't right" manner, more like "now is the right time to finally change..."

It would, but I'm not sure that would work for you. Your RSS client would see the new unread TG, add it to your feed, and leave it there. So even when the game removed that from your feed, you'd still see it in your client.

Nice job so far. I like the issues feature on the sidebar that tells you how many you have left. I'd had a hard time keeping track before that switch was made. Thanks you for that!!

Just as a new idea, could there be a Embassies(sp?) feature and page on the main sidebar? What I'm thinking of is that we could get our friends involved, they choose if they want their own nation or be an ambassador for ours, if they decide on the Ambassador one, then if the leader of Nation X wants to do an RP war on the forums, but doesn't know if the leader of Nation L will be on, then he (or she) lets the Ambassador know and the Ambassador lets the leader know, and it goes from their. That's just my idea, people can improve on it or change it if they want.

I seem to be seeing (fairly) precipitous regional influence drops (2 full levels and counting), despite 1) having steady regional influence since its initiation, 2) few changes to the region (+2 non-UN; +1 UN), all of which occurred prior to the upgrade with no effect at the time on influence, and 3) no use of influence since the upgrade. Dropped a level with this most recent update, so it seems to be an on-going thing.

Sorry, but even the original source on that was in error. The survey was actually related to quantum decay (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_122.html) testing on kittens (the breed known as Schroedinger's), though I must admit that statistics only gave a 50% shot at reliable answers.
