Mission: Survey Planet 15-89E0. Planet Ecology: Mainly Jungle, Multiple Seas and Lakes, Acceptable Atmosphere.

Just another green ball. At least it keeps me out of the military. But sometimes even that seems worth the risk, what with all that happens on these boring planets thought Captain Gedro Mans, Head of Security, about his job and the planet. He couldn't have been more wrong

On the edge of my perception...I am awake...a hole in space...thoughts leak through...many...oh so many...I awake...the thoughts and minds...will be ours

A burgundy beast runs through the jungle, chasing its prey with the fanaticism of the starving, it has been on the hunt after this creature for days, it must soon either give up the hunt or feed, deep within the beasts mind there stir memories of a different form, a man, of middling height and looks, his only outstanding features are his eyes, glowing with an inner green light, and his right arm, massive and warped by the metal encasing his withered limb, but the memories quickly fade, subsumed by the hunger of the beast...

"Attention crew of the Mendel and White Bird. We are about to leave HT. Begin preparations for landing" boomed the speakers.

The Beast fed, its prey still bleeding out as it ripped gobbets of gory flesh from its ravaged hide, another memory surfaced, a well done steak, perfectly cooked in a fancy restaraunt, the man from the first memory, without the scars and prosthetic, laughing with a woman as he spills sauce on his impeccable suit, and then the memory fades, beaten down by the gore in front of the Beasts eyes...

"Attention crew of the Mendel and White Bird. We are about to leave HT. Begin preparations for landing".

Dr. Kal Martin glanced up in the general direction of the speaker, stifled a mild curse, and returned to examining his equipment.

This equipment was the standard for such missions - sample boxes/vials, a low-tech detector of air-borne bacteria (so out-of-date that Martin was surprised it wasn't fossilised), a portable camera - and a small projectile weapon nestled in at the bottom of his equipment trunk. To his chagrin, he didn't know anything about the inner workings of it, and even less about how to effectively use it, unless one counted pulling the trigger repeatedly.

He left it down there, where it belonged. Even should he need defending, he had an army team to do it for him.

He smiled, stroked his goatee beard, and began to fine-tune the detector.

"All crew members begin final check. We are beginning the final phase of HT Exit."

The Beast fed, and it paused in its feeding to watch a streak of fire dropping through the sky, a third memory bubbling up, watching the night sky with the woman from the previous memory, this time with the prosthetic, as the stars fall, burning tracks of fire through the darkness, the attack starts, and the Beast is born, the man kills all of the attackers, but the woman is dead already, killed by the rage of the Beast unleashed, the man flees from his act, retreating into a dark corner of his mind to be free of his pain, but that simply gives the Beast freedom, after nearly a week-long rampage the man returns to himself, covered in blood and other, less identifiable, fluids, then the memory fades as the Beast returns to its food.

How many checks do we need?

The thought floated through Martin's mind as he performed his allotted section of the 'final checks'. He didn't particularly mind doing them - it gave him, as a useless dead weight whilst on board a ship, something to do until he could get into his real element of... well, finding out nothing important about the local biology then taking off again.

I should've learned astrophysics instead. They get to work with more than one type of godforsaken mudhole of a planet.

He sighed.

Jenny uncurled from her almost cat like sleeping position and blinked her cat-like eyes. Even thought the warning for re-entry and final checks were blaring she shrugged them off as she headed to the food locker. With a stretch, she grabbed something to eat and returned to her cabin to await landing.

At the far end of the Hyper Tunnel, instead of the empty black, the star-filled space appeared as the two ships exited the HT which collpased behind them.

The lead ship, Mentel was the security ship, a long, cylinder-like, blocky thing. Not to attractive.

The rear ship. the research ship white Bird was like an upside down L, with the junction covered by a dome, with two more in smaller sizes, in front of it. Actually pleasing to the eye.

So they have finally arrived...the preparations now begin...they know nothing...and hopefully the thing will be ripe.

The Beast was now sated, and went off to sleep away its meal, until it next became hungry...

The two ships began dropping intop the atmosphere, careful to not go too fast or risk signifigant damage.

Onboard the ships, the alteration in gravity caused a few things to fall. And quesiness in those new to entering a planet's gravity well.

Martin glanced around.

He was in luck. 15-89E0 dominated the view from the windows in his quarters, spreading across the glass, smothering all the other little pinpricks of light that competed for his attention.

As planets went, it certainly was nothing special - simply viewing it made Martin feel vindicated about calling it a godforsaken mudhole. Just to be sure, he gave it a quick and perfunctory scan.

Yup, just a miserable little patch of mud and trees that seemed to crop up in every third system in the Galaxy. Nothing majorly special, though the polar ice caps struck him as a little large.

Perhaps I'll get something interesting to keep me conscious on this one, he thought.

He felt the familiar jolt of landing and clutched his equipment case protectively.

"Officer Gundbar, inform the cpatain of the White Bird that it will have to stay in orbit due to a lack of suitable terrain for landing. Officer Poner, land the Mendel."

The Beast awoke at the shuddering of the ground, this area was not prone to the shaking of the earth, it decided to investigate, if it did, it nmay find more food.

No...The beast will interfere...Distract it

"Sir, we have landed and are ready to set up camp."

This time, Dr. Martin didn't stifle his expletives. Admittedly, no-one else could hear them, but after being told he was to sit and wait - and because the soldiers couldn't find a big enough landing site on an entire planet - he felt as if it was worth it.

Oh well. He could reprogram the detector while he waited.

"We've set up a landing zone. Tell them to send the shuttles."

"And not before time!" Martin cried to the empty surroundings.

It seemed the military had finally managed to find a landing place - swiftly done, yes, but surely it wasn't hard to find one - and the White Bird could finally swoop down, do its somewhat dull job, and swoop back out again - at least, that's how Martin saw it.

He felt the gravity go nuts on him again, but by this time all his valuables were strapped down.

Jenny had, after getting food, had gone back to sleep as the ship remained in orbit. If anyone had been following her movement, they would have realized all she did was eat, sleep and head to the bathroom.

The Gigas did not hunger, it sought acceptance, like the monster it resembled it was lonely, and the Gigas knew that these sounds and smells meant people, those like that which it had once been.

IC: With a burst of mental effort, Martin managed not to anger over his mistake (why had he assumed that he was on a shuttle?) and decided to forget about the blasted detector and to instead open his door, and wander off to find a cup of coffee and something to eat.

Now that they were on the ground, Jenny decided to see what there was to do. She wandered out, and seeing one of the other staff, she decided to introduced herself.

"Hello, my name is Jenny, and you'res is?" Jenny asked Martin.

"I'm Kal Martin," Martin said, smiling. "I'm here as our astrobiologist."

He attempted to take this new face in. Although he was sure he'd seen her at some points during the transit, he wasn't surprised that they were unacquainted - he had stayed to himself for most of the brief flight. He was beginning to regret this, as he gradually realised that conversation would have been an improvement on yelling at the captain every hour or so.

"What brings you here to this little party?"

"Shuttle Group B away. All crew in Shuttle Group C prepare for transit."

That's my group thought Mackor Helden. I just hope that the shuttle doesn't have a fuel intake malfunction. Or a steering problem. Or an AG device reversal. He still got queasy thinking about it. Why oh why did he always have the worst luck?

"I was assigned to be part of the survey team, general purpose. What's an astrobiologist?" She asked as she got some meat form the food locker.

"Essentially, it's about alien life-forms - in other words, ones that aren't native to one's own planet," said Martin. Warming to his subject, he continued.

"For example, I'm here to study the life-forms on this planet. Basically, to figure out how they work, whether they are dangerous to us, and what - if any - use they can be put to.

Most modern medicines rely on our profession for this reason - because antidotes to many poisons, and vaccines to many diseases, are usually found in the natural world first, then copied by us.

That's basically what I'm doing here - my job is to find what useful things I can amongst the local life."

He pulled a drink from out of his jacket. "Come to that, what will you be surveying?"

That's my cue. thought Keleck I can't wait to get down there and do my job. Sure, others might not like it, but anything that contributes to knowledge is good.

"Ah, so you're a xenobiologist." Jenny commented, "I'm not going to be doing any specific survaying, I'm more of a general member."

Why did I have to be near the end? Now it's gonna be heel getting up. thought Redre Adter as he struggled to get up. You'd think I'd have left by now wouldn't you? You'd think they'd have forced me? Damn hiring freeze.

"Xenobiologist? Now that's a good title - I'll remember that one." He glanced up towards the sky, to see the fifth shuttle begin it's descent. "How many more shuttles are we waiting on, I wonder?"

He opened his equipment bag, and quickly scanned through the contents. Nothing broken. Nothing ever was, but he would rather that the one time it happened, he noticed it before he was miles from his spares.

"Everything's still working - I'll take that as a good sign."

"Nothing been broken is always a good sign." Jenny replied as she continued polishing off a nearly raw 16oz slab of meat.

Martin gazed in astonishment.

Although nothing was broken, the fact that the only team member he knew the name of was the kind of woman who ate raw meat like that worried him.

He'd certainly seen better signs.

Jenny looked up at his expression, "What's wrong?" She asked

"Well," Martin began, cautiously. "It's just that... well... I've never seen anyone eat raw meat before." He smiled nervously. "Is that an army thing?"

"Not sure, as I've never been in the army, more of a specieal*(sp) thing." Jenny replied, seemingly oblivious to the fact that she was 'human'.

Cursing himself silently for his second blunder that day, Martin fell silent, waiting for the last of the shuttles to arrive so that he could get his job done.

The Beast stirred beneath the surface, but the despair of the Gigas drove it back down again into slumber, something was not right about this place, more memories, a trauma that could not be identified, an injury of unknown scope that had forced the change on the man beneath the masks he now wore, and another change began, this time the Gigas collapsed, writhing on the ground in apparent agony, but it was truly in ecstasy, the arms thinned, the legs lengthened, hair grew from a previously hairless scalp, clothing was revealed beneath the flesh of the Changing Gigas, a massive gun strapped to his leg, and a large yellow arm revealed the truth, Valentine was himself again, and he had to warn them, he was not sure why, but he did...

Something moved near him, he redoubled his speed, he had to get away from whatever was ot there, he was close, no more than 100 yards from the clearing, he could make it... TREE!!! He never saw it coming, he ran right into it, the injury weakened his hold on himself enough that he fell back into the healing grasp of the Beast, repairing his injury and soothing his mind, but trapping him as well, walling him off from the world, he charged the camp, this tiome he was on the hunt, they were edible as far as the Beast was concerned.

Jenny had caught the shuttle group G and was awaiting transit, as she looked at the other crew, her stomach rumbled in hunger.

Martin had never been comfortable with shuttle rides. On his way down, he sat immobile, his fists clenched, not looking at any of his companions. It was all he could do to keep his eyes open.

The shuttle radio was reporting some garbled story about a large animal life-form... or was it a human? Martin was paying little attention, concentrating on doing nothing stupid, at least till he got down to the surface.

I guess it beats studying plant life. He thought. I'll take a look at whatever this thing is when I get down.

Jenny headed to where the floor plans discussed on the ship said the PO was going to be. Once she arrived she took a seat in the lobby.

Relaxing in the PO lobby, Martin took out a scientific journal and began to read.

And close to a lake we;ve spotted. Your job is whatever your best at, seeing as there's a large enough lack of staff for it."

Jenny exited the office, pulled out a map and headed toward outpost 5.
Once there she began looking for someone to report to.

"Ah yes Keleck. I don't need to tell you much, so just the basics. Well, you'll be the mechanic of Outpost 5, right near this lake. Expect aquatic machinery repair."

"Yes sir."

At Outpost 5, near the gate closest to the Main Camp: "Hello there" the man looked at his datapad "Jenny. I'm Gevan Do, the commander of this outpost. What exactly do you do, as there is no job in your file?"

"Don't have a specific job," Jenny, "At least not one that the survey team needs at the moment."

Jenny had, because of the lack of people, let lose many of her form restrictions. While she still appeared human, anyone really looking would realize something was odd.

Finally a good nights sleep. You just don't get many of those in space.

Jenny continued to relax, "Even this partial form is better than that rediculous human form." She thought with a sigh.

Where were they? He'd just have to give them their assignments tomorrow.

The Next Day:
Barracks of Outpost 5: "Alright wake up. We have a job to do."

Jenny returned to her fully human form, and headed out to report for duty.

"Our mission for today is to cross the lake and investigate unusual readings on the far side." said Gevin Do "The crew manifest is in front of the barracks. That is all." he said as he finished and walked out of the barracks center toward the entrance.

"It's right up here" said Keveck as he pushed aside some plants.
"Woah. Jenny wins the bet" for before them, in a valley hidden by the forest, was the wreck of a a large, long spaceship, parts of which were covered by strange, black growths.

She blinked as her eyes rapidly adjusted to the light. Seeing the condition, her eyes partially lit up, it was somewhat homelike. She carried on in her exploration.

OOC: Homelike is one word that doesn't describe this place. Unless Jenny's homeworld is full of...well, why ruin it?

IC: On one of the wall's was a corpse, still with a large amount of flesh. And yet, despite all the wounds, there was no blood...except far from the tentacles.

There was something different about the exit: It was half-covered by the tentacles...which were growing fast.

"I have yet to meet an organic anything that can bind or trap one of us." Jenny commented to herself as she exited throught the gap.

Out of the hole leaped a beast, black as night and wet with it's embryonic fluid. The beast was similar to a dog, though it looked like it could support itself on two legs and had a longer head. In the middle of the head was a long mouth, full with black teeth, and a long, thin, black tongue. It's leg was thick and long, it's arms and legs thicker and shorter. It's skin looked smooth except the parts were chitinous armor covered it. And it wanted a fight.

Jenny giggled, pulled the pistol out of her pocket and fired two rounds at the 'doggie', with no trace of recoil in her arm.

But the bullets did little to stop as the beast ran staright at her, it's head lowered to ram.

She grinned as the beastie charged, pocketed the pistol again and, as the beast got just close enought, used the animal's head to 'leap-frog' it.

OOC: No. The beast is dog in body form only, and a bit in the layout. The tail is like a lizards.

The beasts eyes widened. This would be an excellent fight. It would sate it's hunger and this form was far more suitable for breeding. It's tongue lashing about the beast leaped at Jenny, it's sharp tongue still lashing.

She slid to the side, lashing out with her hand, razor sharp claws extending.

The beast stopped, but it's mouth closed and slightly swelled as it's head reared back

When the blob hit the tree behind here, the part where it hit and around it was disintergrated. The beast, furious that it had missed, did the first thing it thought of: Leap straight at jenny, it's mouth wide open and ready to bite.

The beast was not the least bit happy. Even though it had just been dryed of it's embryonic fluid, it carried knowledge from it's race. That knowledge made it extremely unhappy with being overpowered.

Within Jenny's mind, a friendly voice cried "It is a Brute. You need not resist, for you shall perish if you do, and survive if you don't."

IC: The beast, angered at the state of the fight, charged at tremendous speed, it's mouth wide open.

At the camp: "So you found the nutcase in a shipwreck, Jenny knocked-him out, left Jenny there, and came back here" said Mirdo Laq.

Out of the growth came 10 dark creatures, They were like the one Jenny had fought. In fact, the one Jenny had fought was among them. But this time they were upright with claws coming out of their fingers on their hands. Upright, they were nearly as tell as the average human. But much more menacing.

Jenny opened up on full-auto with the slug-thrower targeting the lead beast, arm not budging an inch as it took the re-coil.
With the electric rifle she targeted and fired at the beast in second place.

The first Grunt, with green-black blood pouring from it's chest, spit a green, slimy blob at Jenny's face and collapsed. The second Grunts, in pain from the stun-rifle, showed no sign of any emotion but enjoyment as the 9 Grunts surrounded the camp site.

Jenny dropped down under the blob, and brought the slug-thrower to bear on the third beast. She had burned throught half the clip taking out the first beast.

The other Grunts, phazed, soon charged at Jenny, their claws ready to slice.

She partially changed, not enought to be truely noticable but enought. Having shredded the second beast, she tossed the slugh-thrower away and leapt up and over the charging beasties.

In mid-air she pulled out the flame-pistol and shot one of the beasts, while continuing to pepper them with the stun rifle.

The Grunt shot with the thermal pistol, not the least bit phazed by the pain, turned with the restof the Grunts, and leapt at Jenny.

"Just finishing" replied Meller as they ran to the boat. As the other Grunts circled the tree on the ground and in others, one turned and ran at the retreating jacks.

Jenny continued to hold the beasts interest with the flame gun, while targeting the beast that was chasing the others with the stun gun.

But it was not enough as the beast leaped on Meller, turned him over, and bit off the fron half of his head, crushing the bones, making them tear up the face as they jutted outward. The beast, satisfied, chewed the bones and flesh, with the occasional bit falling out of it's mouth, When it was done, it spit a green blob-the same one the dying one had spit at Jenny-onto the bloody chunk of fleash that was Mellers face. Then, it turned back towards Jenny, ignoring the other Jacks.

Jenny flamebasted the green goo, while firing a few more stun rounds into the beasts, trying for mouth, and eye shots.

OOC: 1) The goo has already seeped into the body 2) It's a thermal weapon, not a flame one 3) the stun rifle basically uses electricity as the weapon

Unfortunately, with the Grunts having captured the nearby trees, Jenny had lep into the claws of a Grunt.

She slammed the beast, as well as the combined weight, causing the branch to break. She landed lightly shifted and took off in a different direction to the others.

A large hole had been...disintergated...if that described it...in the comm equipment. And Lerdo's body was nearby, lying on the ground covered with the same things that had covered Kquwev's. My God. Suddenly Ader heard a blood-chiling growl, and turned and saw a monster...

"Ader I found Dero's body. It's covered in those things" cried Opel "Ader?" This is not good thought Opel. I really need to get out of here was what she was thinking when she heard the growl and saw it. It was like the Grunt's Jenny had fought, but Opel had no way of knowing that. But unlike the Grunts this creature was more lithe with a long, thin tale with a stinger on the end and no armor on it's body. My God thought Opel as the beast lunged at her, ripping out here jugular's and spitting a green blob into the wound.

The Next Morning
"Attention volunteers for the expedition. Please meet at the command center for final breifing."

Jenny showed up and began stretching.

"Alright volunteers" announced Gevan Do "You know you're mission. You know that you may die. Armamnets are located in the armory. Your armaments are already detailed on the datapads beinng handed out. Except for you Jenny. But do give us enough to defend the Outpost. Dismissed!"

As the groups filtered out, Kevec found Jenny "So how did you survive a fight with those things?" he asked

"Natural abilities." She replied as she stretched her neck causing a number of crackling noises. "I'd suggest making sure you have lots of slug-throwers and ammo on hand."
