World Cup 12 Sign-Up [FULL: look for the WC13 Signup]

With WC 11 starting in less than 24 hours, here is the WC 12 Signup thread.

Newbie question here. How does it work?
A series of football matches are set up - and random number generators used to generate results. Sides then RP the matches - and other stuff related (sometimes very loosely*) to the matches. The tournament is set up to be as similar as possible to the FIFA World Cup.
We have a governing body (World Cup Committee - WCC) consisting of those who have "hosted" the cups. We all babble on and on about what the rules ought to be - then the WCC decides.
Read some of the WC9 and WC8 threads to get an idea of what goes on.

*case in point - me
:D

Some Questions:
How to become a member of WCC?
On which basis do you calculate the matches?
1. You become a member of the WCC by hosting the Cup.
2. The historical offensive/defensive strength, the difference in rank between the teams, the amount that each team has RPed, and home-field advantage are combined to create 'modified defensive numbers' for the two teams in a match. The offensive strength determines the number of 'attacks' that each team gets. For each attack, a random number between 0 and 1 is generated, and if the number is lower than the modified defensive number of the other team, a goal is scored. The goals scored by each team are added up to create the final score of the match.
(Or was that a little more than you wanted to know? ;) )

TnUI, perhaps you should include my explanation in the handball signup thread, since it is a bit more exact than the explanation of SN38. Wew should also link to the last RP thread, so newbs an see how RPing matches is done.

Sounds ok, but how do you decide who wins a game
Like in all NS sports competitions, it is decided by certain formulas based on
* rank
* RPing (if you RP your matches, you get a bonus)
* random numbers

Not really, its just that the only choice we ever get is:

Likeable Regular Nation + Regular Nation
vs
LE + Regular Nation
vs
TBF + Random Nation
vs
Regular Nation + Random Nation

we subconsciously look for the 'likeable + regular' option when we vote. Its like a granted that TBF and LE are going to be fighting it out for second place

Surely teaming up with someone in the WCC is the logical way out?

MAD EVISCERATOMATO HITS OGLETHORPIA
Evisceratomatoes fed with dead evisceratomatoes proven to be 'mad'

By Bill Christmas

OGLETHORPIA (BT) -- Research labs across the nation have reached a general concensus -- that evisceratomatoes distributed throughout the Bureaucratic States may be 'mad' after farmers in Oglethorpia fed their evisceratomato crops with parts of infected evisceratomatoes. While no mad evisceratomatoes have been found, the government is running extensive tests on evisceratomato exports to Tanah Burung -- as well as domestic shipments within the country. Said Preisdent Marvin, "if the ones going to the Belmore Family are mad, then all the better."

"Just kidding," he later added.

Oglethorpian Food, Drug and Food Administrative Association and Federation Director Mike Stumbles said that Oglethorpians -- and Tanah Burungians have nothing to worry about. "It's unlikely that it'll even make it past the FD&FAA&F tests -- so even if there is mad evisceratomato in Oglethorpia, it will not make it into the supermarkets. If, there even turns out to be any mad evisceratomatoes out there."

Local Consolidated FoodMart manager Pete Falls has no plans to pull any of his evisceratomato stock. "It's what the people want for dinner, after all. I trust the FD&FAA&F to make sure any mad evisceratomato doesn't make it to my store."

Oglethorpians in the shopping mall have the same sentiment. "They haven't even found a mad evisceratomato yet -- for all we know there may not be one. Just get the farmers to stop feeding evisceratomatoes to evisceratomatoes, and there's no problem anymore," said one mother of two-dozen.

More on the mad-evisceratomato situation as it comes.

Immediately after the IPA's announcement that the Ice Paladins would be entering WC12, newly announced President Julie Labrique stepped up to the stand and knocked the people off their feet with the following announcement.

"Following secret negociations, the New Montreal States and the Principality of Cockbill Street are now announcing a co-hosting bid for WC12. OK, each World Cup (WC) is hosted by a different nation (nation chosen by the World Cup Committee [WCC]) and the host nation(s) generate the scores. The scores are generated using this roughly formula:

A random Number between 0 and 1*1000-(850+your rank)-your opponents rank+20 if you host+2 every time you RP

You may have noticed above that I was talking about ranks. Ranks are currently calculated by TnUI, effective ruler of the WCC and current host. The formula for rank generation is:
WC9 points+WC10 points+Special RP bonus

To find out how matches are RPed, have a look at The World Cup 11 RP thread (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=110697)

Good, 'cause the formula you've got up there would include 2 RP bonuses (the one in the rankings plus a rolling one) and, so far as I'm aware, no hosts have ever given themselves a bonus (despite the results of WCs 9 and 10).
Rejistania
05-01-2004, 19:21
I think, that TnUI used simply the TBF/Rejis formula, because he was *very* interested in the way I did wcxi.java and he wanted me to tell him the formula. Of course I did, because I don't want a *bleeep* WC because of a wrong formula.
I copied him this part of my program into IRC:
[code:1:edaec95b6a]
if (((Math.random()* 1000)-(864-ht.rank-(ht.rp-at.rp))+(ht.avggf*4)-(at.avgga*4))>1)
{
home++;
}
[/code:1:edaec95b6a]
'ht' is the home team, 'at' the away team, 'rank' and 'rp' should be clear and the 'avggf' are the average number of 'goals for' the according team (you have three guesses what 'avgga' is)

BTW: sign my puppet Abysmalistan up!

Fresh off the legalization of sport this past month, the Nomadic Peoples of Gormith announces it's intent to enter and dominate the upcoming World Cup.

Seeing as how we are nomadic peoples, however, we will have no home stadium, instead playing our opponents on the open fields whenever and whereever we shall meet them. Boundries will be determined by the natural terrain of the land, and time will be kept by the official National Sundial.

Many millions of shiny rocks, however, will be expended in making sure our player's equipment is top notch, and when we travel, our oxen will be first class all the way.

OK, each World Cup (WC) is hosted by a different nation (nation chosen by the World Cup Committee [WCC]) and the host nation(s) generate the scores. The scores are generated using this roughly formula:

A random Number between 0 and 1*1000-(930+(20 if at home)-((your rank-your opponents rank)/2))

You may have noticed above that I was talking about ranks. Ranks are currently calculated by TnUI, ineffective ruler of the WCC and current host. The formula for rank generation is:
WC9 points+WC10 points+Special RP bonus

To find out how matches are RPed, have a look at The World Cup 11 RP thread (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=110697)

So Morawny's a Ravenspire puppet? I was wondering whose it was. I enjoyed the Morawny match reports, BTW.

Thanks. The USAnia ones last cup made them a bit redundant, though, so I sort of stopped. And I'd forgotten I'd signed them up for the current cup. I'll probably do a report or two, but I don't think I want them in from here on -- I mostly added them to 9 because I was hosting and wanted a 'control side' to check my formula results against.

Too bad about the arachnids, though. That would lead to some interesting RP, I'm sure.

sorry, but you cant put forward any motions because you arent in the WCC..... ;)

i understand how frustrated you must be, but the point of having a host is to make sure the world cup runs as smoothly as possible, and to add that 'fun fun fun!' factor to it. If people dont think youre the man for the job, then people dont think youre the man for the job. You can throw as many statistics at us as you like saying how youre good at hosting, but if you keep missing out then theres obviously something missing m8.

Well, TBF had a chance of beating Audiospaam, but they have jackall of beating Lemmy and KP. I think Audiospaam should start looking to host WC13

I see your point... lol :)

But...

I'd like to see Spaam host a world cup since you didnt get to host your own world cup in WC6 (which was, to be fair, your own damn fault :P ;)). IMO, Lemmy and Spaam have similar credentials in terms of World-Cup-Running-Ability and roleplaying, as well as the same amount of the much-needed 'respect' factor, but seeing as Spaam hasnt had a proper shot yet, even if i was a neutral, and even as a good friend of Lemmy, i think i'd give my vote for Spaam for WC12.... and you should too *points and winks at camera* ;)

P.S. good luck to Kingsford and Tanah Burung as well, Audioslavia have never actually played a in world cup in either nation, despite both being initiated into the WCC in our footballing lifetime... 'blames rank-compression and unreliable Kingsford :p'

Sten Mike Easter, aspn wire

A usually reliable source has confirmed the veracity of the leak intimating that the Minister of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages for the Frost-Free Borderlands of Snub Nose 38 shortly intends to announce that the Borderlands is considering the possibility of entering an official bid to host World Cup 13. There are a few loose ends that must first be tied up, which include:

1 - To co-host or not to co-host...that is the question - isn't it?
2 - Should the answer be "co-host" - selecting one.
3 - Can the Minister get out of, and stay out of, Margaret's way that long?
4 - Is there enough beer in Snub Nose 38?
5 - Are there enough uncontaminated live chickens left?
6 - Can sufficient venues be constucted / upgraded to host such an event?
7 - Is The Guy Currently In Charge Of Stuff For The Borderlands Of Snub Nose 38 really this insane?

Scuttlebutt will follow this story closely, and bring you more as it develops.

(Or was that a little more than you wanted to know? ;) )

KP/Lemmy, btw, are provisionally working to the '12 groups of 8' structure used by TnUI/WW in WC11.

14 groups of 6 sounds sweet though :P

BIG OOC

First, just want to thank TnUI for everything he's done for the WCC and World Cups for a VERY long time. He's done some great stuff for us all.

Second - LE, thanks for picking up the ball. Please check the list against those who've signed up. Example - Timway has signed up, but isnt on the list

lastly:

I'd say take 90, have 9 groups of 10 and take the top 3. 2 automatically qualifiying hosts makes 32 into the Cup proper.

I'd RP a bit before you bid to host. We are not willing to leave the World Cup in the hands of a complete newb.

At the moment, AS and I are thinking of 14 groups of 6, which means 84 teams plus us, ie, 86 teams. Means top two qualify, plus 2 spots for the 3rd placed teams.
Snub Nose 38

Well, with MV, we'd have 88 nations.

I'd say take 90, have 9 groups of 10 and take the top 3. 2 automatically qualifiying hosts makes 32 into the Cup proper.

That's just my proposal. The numbers work out, and simple = good = everyone's happy.
10 groups of 9 works (10 x 3). 9 groups of 10 doesn't (9 x 3 = 27)

If the co-hosts auto-qualify, then you have to sign up 92 - because whoever gets selected to host has already signed up, but won't be in a qualifying group. 10 groups of 9 = 18 qualifying matchdays
OR 15 groups of 6, top 2 go through. 10 matchdays.

OR, if there is a lot more interest, you could sign up 102 = 10 groups of 10, top 3 go through and with the 2 co-hosts you have 30. 10 groups of 10 = 20 qualifying matchdays

If the co-hosts don't auto-qualify, then you could take 90 (including the hosts), or 100 (including the hosts), or 96:

90 would be 9 groups of 10, top 3 qualify (27) + a set of elimination matches of the 9 4th place sides to select the final 5. 18 qualifying matchdays, plus five days of elimination matches (3 groups of 3, 2 matches, best 2 record in each group then move into two groups of 3, 2 matches, best 2 records qualify, last in each group has a final match with the winner qualifying

- OR - 10 groups of 9, top 3 qualify (30) + a set of elimination matches between the 10 4th place sides to select the final 2. 20 qualifying matchdays, four elimination days - 2 groups of five, 4 matches, best record in each group qualifies

100 would be 10 groups of 10, top 3 qualify + a set of elimination matches between the 4th place sides to select the final 2. 20 qualifying matchdays, four elimination days - 2 groups of five, 4 matches, best record in each group qualifies

96 would be 8 groups of 12, top 4 go through. 22 matchdays
OR
12 groups of 8, top 2 go through (24), then a set of elimination matches of the 12 3rd place sides to select the other 8. 14 matchdays plus 5 elimination matches (2 groups of 6, 5 matches, top 4 go through)

I suggest the WCC select WC12 hosts now for two reasons:
1. The co-hosts can get started planning WC12 now
2. The co-hosts can decide how they're gonna set it up, and that will determine how many to sign up.

---------------
Got carried away. There are a LOT of possible combinations. More reason for the WCC to select hosts now, so the hosts can get started.

Actually, that's only 18 matchdays ((10 - 1) * 2). Yes, that's the same as 10 groups of 9, but with groups of 10 you don't have to add extra 'bye' days.

Er... well for one, we don't doubt your RPing history in the FHWC, But this, at a guess, would be your first football World Cup. As a result, you can only enter the World Cup as either Grand master Mark or Ana Manu. Not both at htis stage. But, if puppets will still be allowed when WCXIII comes around, you might well be allowed to enter one then.

However, where you seem to have unnerved a few people is where you have expressed an interest in hosting the tournament. As this is your first WC, then the WCC, who vote for the hosts, are not going to vote for you. They are all experienced in WC terms, and know better than giving the hosting rights to a newb (unless they lose all common sense). So you are welcome to enter one of your nations, but we advise you withdraw the hosting bid straight away. If you're still around in a few World Cups time, then maybe you might want to host it then, but not yet.

before I go revolutionary on all y'all, let me propose this idea to you, because it might be used in a Kingsford hosting bid sometime in the future.

Ok, we'll start with qualifying, since it itself is complicated.

You have 102 teams. 2 hosts, auto qualify.

So you split the remaining 100 teams into 20 groups of 5.

Now, you take the teams seated 3rd (41-60), 4th (61-80), and 5th (81-100), and play the following schedule

3 v 4
3 v 5
4 v 5
4 v 3
5 v 3
5 v 4
3 v 4
3 v 5
4 v 5

And the bottom team is then eliminated. It's place is taken by the 2nd seated team in the group (21-40_, and you play a similar schedule. Once again, the bottom team is elimated. The bottom team's place is then taken by the first seated team in the group (1-20). Once again, the same schedule is played with the three remaining teams.

The top two teams from each group (20) + the two hosts (2) + the two best performing 3rd placed teams (2) qualify, for a total of 24

Should there be more than two teams in the third place position for the top two spots, a playoff would be held to narrow the field down to two teams.

So anyways, we have 24 teams. Cool. Onto the World Cup itself.

So you take the 24 teams, and you put them into six groups of four. each team plays the others once, for a total of three games, and the top two teams advance.

So now we have 12 teams. What we do now is place those 12 teams into four groups of three. Each team plays eachother once and the top one team from each group advances. That gives us four teams.

We now go directly into the semifinals. The two winning teams play the final match, and the two losing teams play the match for third place.

So that's it. A new format of the World Cup.

In case you might have noticed, this format is the same as Spain 1982. The qualifying is the original Kingsford work, combined with the Spain world cup. If this idea is well received, then I might implement it, should I get a hosting bid. Hey, at least it's not like 1978 Argentina. Pah.

You can have my place. Due to lack of time, Ariddia won't be participating in WC12. *gasp*

I'll still be collecting hosting votes, keeping up with WCC discussions, and making the official hosting announcement, of course. I know skipping a Cup (or more) will damage my ranking, but, ah well... It'll be a challenge for the team when they come back. ;)

What seems like ages ago, I started this whole thing rolling... and roll it has. You've all contributed to make it into something great. Twelve editions of the World Cup!! I'd never have dreamt of that back in the early days... So, be proud. And, most importantly of all, the one thing to keep in mind...
... have fun!

I'll try to RP in WC11, and then... I'll you all around...

~cries~

Thats pretty amazing though.... 40 years worth of World Cup. (Yes TBF, you are wrong. 11 cups = 40 years. And there was no qualifying in the first cup.) We'll miss you though!

rar rar rar

worst... idea... ever.... the reason they changed the amount of teams from 24 to 32 between Italia '90 and USA '94 was because, at the end of the first round, only eight teams got knocked out, and it was a bit pointless.

Do you just have a trophy case of dreams, ideas, and ambitions that you've killed or shot down?

Oh well, I'm a revolutionary. Sometimes revolutionary ideas aren't always good.

New Idea. We put all the names in a hat, and the first drawn wins the tournament.

What a novel idea. Maybe we could write down ranks on the sheets beside the names so we could all bitch about how crooked the system is when someone who isn't no.1 wins!

The winner is @@NAME@@.

Everyone goes home happy.

Why not just vote for the winner? It should really be a popularity contest, anyway. We could change the name to, "The NationStates World Cup Most Likely To Succeed" award.

I like the "Picking Names Out of a Hat" idea...but only if the Snub Nose 38 Minister of Picking Numbers Out Of A Hat, Anita Brake, does the "picking".

Otherwise, we could...hold a football competition, where the results are determined by...random numbers? this, of course, must be read in a voice absolutely dripping in sarcasm

With the final stages of WC11 underway, it's probably time to start casting your votes for hosts. ;) WC members, just send me your vote by telegram, as usual.

Oh, and thanks to you. I'm touched.

Might be an idea to list whose puppet is who for the benefit of the host to avoid Spaamgate-style incidents (or ones where the puppet is unclear; TnUI drew AR once because the hosts didn't know AR was TnUI's puppet).

Here's the list as far as I know...

Puppets:
Oddslavo (of LE)
Belmorian Scandinavia (of TBF)
Big Butts (of Halfassedstates)
The Master Cooper (of NEWI Cefn Druids)
East Spaam (of Spaam)
Eaglet
Antaeus Rising (of TnUI)
Stalag 5
Abysmalistan (of Rejistania)
Avenging Altos (of Kaze Progressa)
