Larkinian Military Command, one month later

Lance General Johnson and Vice Admiral Thompson were having another of their 'heated discussions'.

"I can't believe you're pushing for a court marshall!" Thompson barked at Johnson. "Jesus Christ he saved those refugees from certain death, he's done more than his share of..."

"... of what? I'll tell you of what!" Johnson growled back, "of being a hero in Iansisle and a pain in the ass to us. Maybe you've forgotten Vice Admiral, but he IS a Larkinian Officer first. Maybe he needs to remember who he serves. Christ, I could have him taken out of the military for swearing to a foreign soverign."

"But that was cleared by you, me, everyone in this and the previous administration," Thompson said.

"By the Larkinian Code of Military Justice, he can be, and WILL BE brought up on charges of desertion of post in time of conflict, dereliction of duty and failing to obey orders, any of which is 10 years at Lyone Prison."

"But..."

"Forget it, it's already done. The charges are being delivered as we speak."

Dun Adien Infirmary, Dun Adien Castle

Jeff had been here before...

A group of men walked into the infirmary and handed Jeff an envelope.

Unlike the last time, this officer was embarassed to be here after everything Jeff had done.

"Ummmmm... Admiral Williams, sir? I.. I regret to inform you that you are to be placed under a... arrest, sir," he said looking at the ground. "For charges of desertion, failing to obey an order and dereliction of duty. Under Larkinian Code of Military Justice Articl...."

"... Article 46, Section One, Subsection Bravo, I am to come with you immediately for court marshall at the nearest Larkinian Military Base, or Golden Agate," Jeff finished the statement. "I've read the article. I understand," he said sitting up in bed and reaching over for his wheelchair. "You mind if I finish getting dressed first?"

LNN News

"Welcome back to LNN. We now go to Jessica Rivas, outside the Justice Ministry with a special report."

"Thanks Steve," a young woman with brown hair, hazel eyes and a light tan standing in the snow in front of a tall narrow building. "I've just been informed that due to his actions about a month ago on the refugee rescue from Tharkold, Admiral Jeff Williams is being arrested and sent here for a court marshall in front of a military tribunal.."

"The charges against the Admiral are believed to include desertion, derelction of duty and failing to obey a direct order."

"Jessica, what does that mean for the Admiral?"

"Well the first two charges seem a little iffy," she said, "If they can prove he somehow deserted his post in a time of crisis, then it won't look good for the Admiral. The first charge, desertion, carries a penalty of death by firing squad, while the last two each carry 10 years of hard labor at the Lyone Military Prison at Tertiron Reef"

"And what is the basis for these charges?"

"It appears the Judge Advocate General's office is going to make the case that by allowing the helicopters to return with the refugees instead of the military staff, Williams deserted his post at command of the Arkadia Battle Group. Whether or not these charges can stick, is another story."

"Now what?"

"The Admiral will be brought back to Golden Agate probably for a Flag Officer Tribunal. Unlike the civilian courts, in many military tribunals, the defendant is considered guilty until proven innocent. Which makes this a very steep uphill battle for the defense team."

"Thanks Jessica, that was Jessica Rivas from the Justice Ministry"

---------

"What!?!?" Katherine shot up from her chair in the infirmary. "You have to be kidding"

"N.... No ma'am," the young lieutenant said. "According to the military code of Justice, the Admiral is to come with us for a tribunal hearing. Which I've been told will be held in Golden Agate, as a result of what they claim is his 'abandoning his post."

Katherine looked over at the men, "No! That's not right! Not after what he did!"

"I agree ma'am, the ends justified his actions, he saved all those people from certain death. But we have our orders. Admiral, we'll be waiting by the front gate for you sir."

Takeo Katana read through the report from the JAG team.

Unbelievable, completely, utterly unbelievable!

He knew the codes of military justice, and at this point he was aware he could not intervene, but that means he couldn't at least meddle from the sidelines.

He walked out to his secretary's desk, "Aiana, I'd like complete rundowns on every JAG lawyer in the military. Strengths, weaknesses, everything. I also want a list of the best defense attorneys in Larkinia, cross referenced with the JAG list to see which pair would work together the best."

In Dun Adien Castle

Lieutenant Henry Weber walked away from the infirmary door with his team in tow to meet Jeff in front of the castle. As he walked he felt the other envelope in his pocket. In his excitement to meet Jeff, he'd forgotten, he still had to inform King James he was there to take Jeff back to Larkinia.

He quickly turned, swearing quietly to himself as he walked down another hallway. He'd turned through a couple more corridors and realized that he was lost in the castle. He looked at the oncoming guards and asked, "Excuse me, I'm looking for King James. I'm Lt. Weber, from the Larkinian Judge Advocate General's office with a letter for him."

Takeo sat at his desk, looking at the screens on the walls to replicate the conditions outside, it almost convinced him that his office wasn't two stories underground.

He winced as he sipped the bitter coffee, quickly standing up and grabbing some Irish Cream to pour into the mug. He watched as the computer-generated sun began to set behind the volcanos.

He'd read the dossier of JAG Lawyers and the best criminal defense lawyers in Larkinia and tried to piece together a defense team for Admiral Williams.

Michael Sideman... Hmmmm.. so far he's got an unbeaten record, but he's still young, and very arrogant for his age. Maybe not... He put that file in the "Maybe" pile. Aerospace Major Tasha Fowler, tenacious, tough as nails. Humble? That's rare for a JAG lawyer. Weak in evidence, strong in questioning and cross-exam. Very good courtroom presence. He placed it in the "Definitely" pile.

"Sir?" a young Asian woman, his secretary Aiana, asked as she slipped into the room. "I've sent out the first of your messages."

Takeo nodded and smiled at her as he sat back down at the desk. He'd sent out messages to other world leaders he'd met or heard things about. He knew that he couldn't interfere too much in the trial, but he could make sure that the trial was fair, and asked for observers to be sent to Golden Agate.

"Sir, you do have other duties," she said trying to prod him away from the files on his desk. "There is still a nation to run."

Had it been anyone else, they might have been reprimanded for that, but Aiana had shown Takeo that he worked well with her, and she got away with more.

"Right," he said before turning back to the files on the desk.

He looked at the oncoming guards and asked, "Excuse me, I'm looking for King James. I'm Lt. Weber, from the Larkinian Judge Advocate General's office with a letter for him."

The two enlisted men, clad as usual with Royal Guards in the archaic dress uniforms of the K.I.G., saluted him crisply. The closer one, a young Shadoranite whose nametag read 'Weathers,' stepped forward, rubbing his chin. "I'm actually jus' coming off of duty with the King...he was back in the Honeycomb, reading." Seeing the blank look on the man's face, Weathers smiled. "I'm sorry lieutenant, I'd be happy to show you there. Right this way." And the young man, his silent companion following behind, picked his way through the twisting corridors of the ancient castle, designed to befundle any invaders, eventually going outside briefly and crossing to a different building and rapping lightly on a door.

"Pardon me, Majesty," said Weathers, poking his head into the eerie golden glow. "There's a Lt. Weber, from the Larkinian J.A.G., here to see you."

James, who had been quite unaware of activities in other parts of his home, looked up sharply. He hadn't forgotten that conversation with President Katana yet. "Show him in, please, Weathers," the High King started slowly. "Hello, Lieutenant. Anything I can do to help you?"

(All right! I knew it was Weathers!)

Lt. Weber thanked Weathers with a salute, "Thank you for your time." he said before turning and walking into the Honeycomb.

Weber stopped in front of the king and saluted him crisply. "Sir, I'm Lt. Henry Weber. I've come to inform you that I have to..." he looked down quickly embarrased and collected himself, looking eerily like Jeff when he'd look down embarrassed, "to arrest one Rear Admiral Jeffrey Matthew Williams on charges of desertion, dereliction of duty and refusal to follow orders from a Ministry Flag Officer."

He handed the king a sealed envelope. "These are the charges against the Admiral," he said. "I've already been to the infirmary and informed Admiral Williams that I have to take him back to Golden Agate for the tribunal." He stood prepared to receive the barrage of abuse from the young King.

(heh, I'm sure we were all surprised ;))

James set down his book, hands shaking slightly, and looked up at Lt. Weber as Princeton and Lawrence tried to shrink into the golden walls. He removed his reading glasses, blinking twice at the Larkinian and plopping them on top of his moppy brown hair. He didn't stand, however, accepting the envelope while still sitting, as if he did not trust his own legs. A letter opener flashed, and James gave the contained list of charges a precursory scan. At last, he glanced back up at Webster, no anger in his eyes, only sorrow.

"I...see. Well, I shall have to have my bags packed in a hurry, then." The High King, still sitting, nodded at Princeton, who saluted and left the room.

"Yes sir," Weber says, "President Katana figured you would say that. So he has Larkinia One waiting for you, your staff, the admiral's wife and family. Unfortunately, Admiral Williams will be traveling with us in the A-130 cargo ship. It's standard procedure. I'll tell them when we meet with the Admiral at the castle gates.

"President Katana also wanted me to inform you that he's sent invitations to other democratic world leaders, hoping they will attend the tribunal and ensure its fairness, and he's put together a defense team for the Admiral's tribunal."

Well I dont have anything to do so inform them that I will attend.Pack my bags and inform everyone who needs to know.

Aiana walks into Katana's office unannounced. "Mr. President, we've received confirmation that the leader of Gore_2004 will be attending the military tribunal."

"I see," Katana said looking up from the latest incident reports from Tharkold, they were still unhappy about the rescue. "Set up reservations for him in the Pyramid Hotel, one of the Executive Suites with a nice view of the mountains."

----------

Jeff wheeled the small wheelchair through the halls of Dun Adien. He lingered a moment too long at the painting James had done for him when he and Katherine had returned to Iansisle after the twins were born, reading the title and looking at the ships surging in the waves.

"A Guardian Angel"

He looked back down and started wheeling down towards the gate.

Katherine walked quickly towards the Honeycomb, trying to dial Dr. Niven on her cell phone.

James let a small, coughing laugh leave his body. "I can't say I liked your President Katana too much the first time I met him...well, not counting the Freedom Five conference. However, he certainly does have a way of proving initial reactions wrong." Using a nearby table to steady himself, he rose to stand in front of Weber, with a combination of his own nerves and a twing of pain from the broken leg that had almost been allowed to set improperly after the Veritas Conference nearly forcing him back down. However, he soon acclimated to the posture and shook his head. "I don't suppose it'd be possible to see Sir Jeffery before ... he's taken away?"

LOL: well the short version is, Jeff gets recalled to Larkinia, then has to go try and start a peace-talk again and rescue embassy staff in a third-world Nigeria-esque country, ends up trying to rescue a bunch of refugees, he and the special forces team end up having to fight their way to a beach head (in which Jeff runs across a scene of serious genocide) where they are rescued by Iansislian Marines. *takes breath* Jeff and the rest of the team get fairly shot up and having an F-14 missile strike on their location didn't help (which blew off Jeff's leg) and now he's being court-marshalled for his actions. *takes breath*

Jeff walked, well... hobbled toward the waiting Military Police. He heard a familiar voice pipe up.

"Well, well, well.... it's Long John Jeffie," Captain Markson said from the back of the group.

"Arrrrrgh, Arrrrrrgh," Jeff grinned in his best pirate imitation. He reached the group. "Where's the lieutenant?" he asked.

"Talking to King James," another officer said. "Gave him a heads-up on your arrest sir."

"Why are you here Chris," Jeff asked looking at his friend.

"Same as you Jeff-o." Chris said.

Jeff finally noticed, Chris' hands were shackled in front of him. "Looks like we've got a nice trip ahead of us."

Jeff where are you going , and what in the name of the lords of the nine hells are all of these military people doing here."

At that point Niven's personal transport flys in over the castle and its missile racks unfold from it's sides.

Jeff gave Dr. Niven a shocked smile as he came through the front door and stormed over to the military group. He really hated having to explain this to his dad.

The transport flew over the castle and Jeff suddenly felt more relaxed, having multiple missiles aimed as possible adversaries had that effect on him.

It turns out Jeff didn't have to explain things.

"Sir, we're from the Larkinian Judge Advocate General's Corps. We have to bring Admiral Williams to Golden Agate on a 46-1-B."

Looking at Niven's reaction, he explained, "Articles for a court-marshal. He's being arrested on charges of desertion, dereliction of duty and refusal to follow orders from a Ministry Flag Officer." one of the other officers said, handing Niven an envelope with the charges inside. "We're sorry about this sir," he said turning back to Jeff, "But it's standard procedure, I need to handcuff you for security."

"First, you put handcuff on my son and they are going to send you home in a bucket, son. Second, your second rate bannanna republic should be putting a freakin medal on Jeff rather than handcuffs. Third, I will kill each and every one of you and destroy any air craft that you have before I let you take my son again, you rabid militant kidnappers!" To illustrate his point a missile launches from the transport and hits the c-130. It does not explode, but does leave a dent.

"That was your only warning."

" Persuiant to Celestial order 19-72 section A. A diplomat may declare war on a foriegn nation if he feels that a citizen of his nation is under suffcient threat or duress. The Celestial congress is obliged to back this decleration. Do you want to start a war ? "

"Sir, there's not a man here who would argue against you on those points. He stopped a mass murder from taking place, he shouldn't have to face a firing squad," the lieutenant JG said.

"But we have to follow our orders. And our orders state that as a Larkinian Flag Officer, Admiral Williams needs one Flag Officer from each branch of the Larkinian Military, Army Navy and Aerospace, to file for charges against him. Unfortunately, three flag officers did file. And now we're here. We don't want to start a war, sir, but we have to take him in."

Jeff smiled and hugged Dr. Niven, "Dad, don't start a war on my account. I have to accept responsibility for my actions. A lot of good men died because they believed in me, and that we were doing the right thing. If the tribunal finds me guilty, then I..." Jeff stopped and swallowed hard, "I have to accept my role in their deaths."

Dr. Niven seems to deflate a bit, "Son, if this is what you need to do, so be it. " And if you know me ,boy, you know that is not a hollow threat. Also what I said about the handcuffs still stands. You put them on him, I drop the man who does it. Are we clear ?"

Jeff gave Dr. Niven as brave a smile as he could. "It is. If for no other reason than the families of those who died with me deserve a real explanation why, not the canned one I'm sure Mil-Com gave them. Regardless of what happens, I can look at myself in the mirror and know I did the right thing."

"Yes sir, I.. understand," the lt. jg said, trying to figure out how to explain the breach of protocol.

"Don't worry," Jeff told him, "It's not like they could have held me anyway."

"I... yes sir," he replied then turned to Niven, "Sir, President Katana has sent Larkinia One for you, King James and his staff, your wife," he said turning to Jeff, "and your children to travel on. And he will be waiting at Golden Agate Int'l for your arrival.

"However Admiral, again according to protocol, you have to travel with us on the transport plane."

Chris piped up from the back, "As long as we're taking handcuffs off of people, Jeff? Help a brother out?"

"Dad, we'll be fine," Jeff tried to reassure him, failing. "But Lieutenant, can we take those cuffs off of Captain Markson?"

One of the sargeants in the group uncuffed Markson who quickly popped his wrists.

"Sir, can I help you?" Weber asked as he reached out to help James. "I'm sure we can get a wheelchair if you need it."

"No, no: I'm fine!" insisted James, perhaps a little more harshly than the situation dictated. He didn't want the lieutenant to see just how badly he was taking the situation. "I'm fine," he added, a little more quietly, as the two walked out across the castle's courtyard to a scene of chaos. James' first reaction was that the Imitorans were back for Christin, but the craft's Celebornian markings quickly distilled that thought.

However, it did turn his attention to his blushing bride to be, for whom he had at last set a date for the wedding. She was taking a nap back in their chambers, but all this commotion had probably woken her up. Trying to hide a limp that he never knew he had, James walked up to Dr. the Earl of Niven, frankly a little scared to approach him, with a disarming smile. "Don't worry, doc. I've spoken with President Katana; we've been invited, as world leaders, to attend and make sure this whole thing is fair." He looked at Niven. "Katana is a good man; I trust his countrymen will follow him in doing the right thing."

In the meantime, Christin had proven that there was no keeping a good Imitoran from a potential fight. She had been quite distraught that James would attempt to leave her home for this thing, and quite insisted to come along. It didn't take much persuading.

"Dr. Niven, I think I'll be going on Larkinia One for this trip. No reason to make them fly it out here for nothing, after all. However, I wonder if I could trouble you for a ride to the airport?" asked James, nodding in the direction of Shadoran Int.

"...and we'd prefer not to die of old age on Regal before we even make Adien Bay," finished Christin with a smile.

At Niven's limp question, James scratched the back of his neck. "No, I, uh, don't really..."

"Yes, he is," cut in Christin again, giving James a squeeze around the shoulders. "I've been demanding he see the doctor here for the last couple days, but he refuses to do anything about it. I think it's related to that spill he took in Effit."

"I don't know...I mean it hardly..." started James, looking from one to the other. "It's really nothing at all."

"Potshots, eh?" asked Christin with an arched eyebrow. "That threatens to take me back a year or two!"

James, meanwhile, was watching Jeff and Chris being taken off, doing his best not to think about the upcoming flights. He had barely gotten used to the circa two hundred mile an hour Bankfields; a jet transport was right up there with the Larkinian Eagle as far as he was concerned.

"Don't worry, Jeff," he said with a smile and a hug. "No matter what happens, I'll never let my big brother down."

Jeff watched as his loved ones boarded Niven's ship. He slowly turned and hobbled down to the transport chopper waiting to take him to the C-130 with the rest of the security detail.

After they boarded the plane and it thundered off toward Golden Agate, one of the sargeants walked over to Jeff and Chris. "Sirs, I apologize for this, but as you know it's standard procedure," he said pointing toward a chair where a man with clippers and a straight razor was waiting.

"Damn man," Chris said, "Damnit Jeff, I finally got my dreads out the right length and now we gotta... this is the last time I go on an adventure with you," he grinned.

"Nothing," James repeated with a small smile, painfully aware of Christin pointing at his right leg behind his back. "See you in Larkinia." James stepped back and allowed Jeff to be led off with a slight tear forming in the corner of one of his eyes. He felt a pair of female arms being wrapped around him, and Christin's voice in his ear.

"Don't worry; everything's going to be fine," she whispered, squeezing him.

"I know," he said, trying to laugh but falling short.

20 minutes after sitting in the chairs, it was all over. Standard military procedure, Jeff and Chris were shaved and their heads were shaved close to the skin. Jeff looked around the chair at the auburn piles of hair on the ground. He'd had his goatee since before he was in command of the Defiance...

Chris looked at his dreads on the ground and his beard shaved, looking in the mirror he said, "I never thought I'd see us like this J."

"Me either"

Another man handed Jeff and Chris two grey uniforms. Replicas of regular Larkinian navy uniforms except they were slate grey instead of Royal Blue.

(A note, in the Larkinian Military, dress uniforms are black with a color trim depending on service, blue for navy, green for army and white for aerospace, regular BDU's are the color of the trim and there is a special grey BDU to indicate military prisoners).

Jeff and Chris changed into the grey uniforms and stepped out where they were placed in two seats and read for part of the flight.

Several Hours later

The plane approached Golden Agate International, where it gently landed and began taxiing to a private military gate.

Larkinia One approached the presidential landing strip at the airport, and pulled into a terminal where an anxious Takeo Katana was waiting.

Jeff and Chris walked off of the transport, where they were surrounded by heavily armed and armored security police, some aiming around them, some looking out for snipers.

Takeo shook hands with James, "Your majesty, I am glad to see you also, although I wish it were under happier circumstances."

Takeo looked around the private terminal, "Where is Mrs. Williams and Dr. Niven?"

He listened to James' question, "They did some, public opinion is running quite strong here, and many of those in the military who were questioning his actions before have changed their minds. However, those looking for a trial did find one Naval Flag Officer to sign on, and that's all they needed.

"We must hurry, they are being taken to the tribunal as we speak for the preliminary motions, their lawyers are waiting for them there."

Niven's craft (I gotta give it a name) Landed at the presidential strip and Niven stormed straight out daring any of the military personnel to attempt to stop him. He walked straight up to the president " I should have let that son of a bitch kill you. When I helped free your country I thought that this sort of injustice was a thinkg of the past. I expect that you have a pardon written for Jeff before this sham even begins." Taking a breath " And rest assured that if Jeff is convicted by this little witch hunt, and if he is sentenced to death that there will be more death to follow. Jeff is considered a national treasure by Celeborne, no matter what your tin-pot military dictatorship thinks, and his death will be considered an act of war and we will withdraw from the alliance. We have had enough of the persicution of this hero, yes hero. That was not Jeff's father speaking, that was the voice of Celeborne. As his father, I will make sure that the first missile strike takes out the capital. "

"As do I, Mr. President. Still, it's good to know that most Larkinians are as strong and wise as their leader." James sighed. "After you, Mr. President," he started, waving in the general direction of where Jeff was being taken. Just then, Niven made his storming enterence, and, James coughed to draw attention to himself. That hardly seemed wise, considering the mood the doctor was in, but he steeled himself. "Lord Niven, President Katana here's actually been most helpfull during this ... ordeal. I share in your zeal for defending Jeff, but I think it may be... prudent if we directed it into helping him be aquitted."

"After all," he smiled, "I think there's something in the charter now about attacking a fellow ANH member state."

Katana stood and waited until Dr. Niven finished.

"As far as my 'tin-pot military dictatorship' goes, this is not a military dictatorship anymore, thanks to you and your soldiers who helped us. I do not dictate the policy of a military tribunal, they were crafted to make it very hard to hold one. But after the military had their third flag officer to sign onto it, there was nothing I could do. I made overtures, and offers to all of the officers at the Military Command to keep the remaining ones from signing on. One did, and now he will be dealt with.

"I agree that this is a witch hunt, that the military leaders are trying to make an example of him to those who still wish to act out on their own, without going through the civilian courts, thereby undermining my authority.

"Now if you will listen to me, I will explain to you what is going to happen now. I have Jeff's lawyers already lined up, the best lawyers in the nation, I have checked out each of their credentials personally and they compliment each other nicely. Now we must go, pretrial starts shortly."

Katherine looked at Niven and James, "I... I can't. I'm going to our apartment here with the children," she said almost in tears.

Calming a bit " I am sure that you are correct, Your Majesty. We should be aiding Jeff, and assureing that he never has to return to this godforsaken place." Turning to the president. " There was a time when I loved your country, but all I have seen from your nation is an endless persicution of a man who has done little more than attempt to aid his fellow man." He then turns ice cold " As to the alliance, if Jeff is murdered by this military council, the alliance is over for Celeborne." He turns to Katherine " I am sorry dear. Please go to where ever you will feel comfortable and take the guards from the craft, I wouldn't put it past them to try to kidnap you."

"Of course Duchess," Katana said waving over a group of guards, "Take the Duchess and the children to the Admiral's townhouse."

"Yes sir," One said as they escorted Katherine and the children to a waiting car.

Takeo led the rest of the group to a waiting stretch SUV. He held the door open for them and entered last. The SUV roared onto the main highway into Golden Agate, it's police escort flashing their lights as they shot through town, ignoring intersections and stopping other vehicles.

"It's not just Jeff, Doctor." Katana said, "Any officer believed to have violated orders is being held to a strict standard. Part of the result of Grant having taken power are those who disobeyed orders to stop him. They don't want that to happen again. It's why a split in power was also written into the Constitution, to avoid any one man from taking that kind of control again, however it does limit my control over certain aspects of the nation, and for that I am quite, truly sorry."

"Try not to stay up too late," he said, the joke even sounding hollow in his own mind. Christin gave him the obligatory smile, before turning to try and comfort Lady Katherine.

James held up his hands as he stepped into the transportation, more than a little scared by Niven's threat to take Celeborne out of the New Highlands Alliance. "I understand what you mean, Lord Niven. Iansisle finds itself confounded by certain actions of small elements in the Larkinians military, but we find just as stupid and reactionary elements in our own governmental structure. I'm sure this whole incident will resolve itself without the need for drastic action." Because I don't know what I'd do if they actually try and shoot Jeff, he admitted to himself silently, imagining that he'd rage like Dr. Niven...though Celebornian spaceships may be a tad more effective than prop driven aeroflyers and a .303 bolt action rifle.

"Katana, I am not at odds with you, I am at odds with this military council, and I think that it best for them to understand that there is a world beyond thier myoptic view. They cannot see where thier actions can affect anything beyond thier military. They need to understand that Jeff is a hero to the people of many nations and thier little power play will have repurctions that they may not be aware of or ready for. Celeborne is no Imitora, but Jeff is considered my son there, and therefor a member of our nation. This action will hurt our alliance, and could escilate much faster than any of us are ready for. I suggest that you get a pardon ready. It has been my experience that your nation does not treat Jeff well. Let me remind you that the last time this happened I had to break him out of prison. "I know he is doctor, he is considered a hero to almost all of Larkinia as well. And that was before the four billion letters from Iansisle arrived to support him. He's shown the world he has more courage on his own than all of the people in the Military Command Building combined.

"If I could I would have put him on the military council a while back, but that would have taken him away from Iansisle, and I remember the message I got from you two the last time I even contemplated doing that. Here we are!"

Katana points to a large domed building in the foothills of the mountains.

"The governmental sector, that building is Ministry of Justice, where the tribunal will be held."

The SUV pulled into the private lot and a shorter, hispanic man with piercing eyes in a black dress uniform with green trim opened the door.

"General Rios, how much time?"

"Not much Mr. President," the man said "I've stalled them as long as I can, but we've got to go." He turned to James and Niven and saluted, "General David Rios, pleased to meet you. Sorry gents, no time!" he turned and rushed the team into the building and toward the top floor tribunal room.

"It's no problem, Kate," smiled Christin, helping to put the children to bed. She accepted the tea with a smile, though she wasn't too big of a fan, and with a thank you. She took a small sip and directed Kate to somewhere she could sit down. "I've been talking with James, whose been talking with Grand Admiral Tri. I just know everything will work out perfectly." Two men, in a blue and green trimmed robes and a woman in a white trimmed robe walked onto the dais from their chambers. The woman rapped the gavel on the stand. "This tribunal is now in order. Will the defendants please rise."

Jeff and Chris looked at each other and stood up.

"On the charges of desertion, dereliction of duty and refusal to obey a Minister Flag Officer's commands, how do you, Rear Admiral Jeffrey Matthew Williams and Captain Christopher Ian Markson, plead?"

Jeff and Chris again looked at each other and knocked fists gently.

"Ah, I see. So instead of walking away, the good Admiral took the time to wait for pistols to be brought, then walk ten paces turn and shoot? And in all that time he didn't think about leaving the poor drunkard alone? It does show an intent to go through with ending a man's life, which is also murder. But we won't duel over the word, no pun intended..."

"Objection!"

"Sustained, watch it General.."

"Apologies. Now Ambassador Niven, Admiral Williams has a history of running off on his own, I'm thinking about the next report in his file. Running to Imitora regarding some... elves? Do you remember that? It was one of the many times you had to patch him up."

"Ending a mans life is not always murder, were that the case I am afraid that your court would be tied up with trials for most of your military, but that line of questioning has been closed I think. As to the Imitora situation, I am afraid that I was not overly involved in that , so anything that I had to say on that situation would be pure speculation and I do not believe that the court wishes to waste it's time with the speculations of this old man."

Jeff leaned over to Major Fowler, "don't worry, he's not that old," he said with a mischevious grin.

Johnson continued on, "Ambassador, when you were in command of the Celebornian Military, you did have order in your ranks, did you not? You weren't letting your soldiers running away on the hopes of glory did you?"
imported_Celeborne
29-12-2003, 12:11
"Oh yes, we had and still have order in the ranks. However, there are times when the best thing a man can do is either disobey an order or be creative with the situation that he has. Hunting for glory is not generally the goal of a man who disobeys orders, I am sure that the generals in the room can back me up on this, most men who disobey orders are trying to avoid the situations that would give them glory. Most are looking for a way to run away, not a way to save lives. Most people who get medals are not looking for them, they are simply doing the right thing. We would also allow a man who carries the rank of Admiral to use his best judgement in most situations and not micromanage him out of usefullness."

29-12-2003, 12:16
"So then it's up to each individual to determine whether or not they want to follow an order and how to follow it?" Johnson asked, realizing that he was getting nowhere with Niven. "How on earth did Celeborne advance as far as it did with you at the helm?" he asked in frustration.

A flurry of activity started up then.

"General!"

"Objection to this whole line of questioning!" Fowler snapped.

Jeff burst up from his seat, immediately the security cannons were trained on him, "You're outta line Johnson!" he yelled pointing at the Lance General.

"Sit down Williams or I'll man that firing squad myself!" Johnson barked back.

Calmly Niven looked Johnson over from the floorboards to the top of his head. " So, you are not getting the answers that you are looking for so you move to insults, most unbecomming of an officer. I will be lodging a formal complaint over your uncivil actions. Now to answer your question, Celeborne advanced as far as it has with me at the helm for a few simple reasons, not the least of which is the ability to determine the abilities of a man or woman and allowing them to live up to it." When Jeff Jumps up Niven simply raises his hand to him Sit down, I have this one. " Do you have any more questions or would you like to throw more insults ? "

Fowler stood up and faced the judges, "I call Admiral Jeffrey Williams to the stand."

Jeff nodded to Chris then stood up and hobbled to the stand, the metal peg slipping once causing him to fall to one knee. Fowler helped him stand back up and walk to the stand.

"Admiral, the first question is.. why?"

"Because it was right. Because we couldn't enforce the cease fire, and I didn't have the chance to get talks restarted, which is why I was recalled to Larkinia from Iansisle. Those people would have died otherwise."

"Who ordered you to Tharkold?"

"The Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee."

One steaming-mad President Katana, the legal teams, minus one Lance General, and the judges all walked out of the chambers, looking very grim faced.

"We have taken the recent revelations under consideration, and after consultations, this tribunal will continue. However, that said, these revelations will weigh quite heavily on our decision, and as of now, Lance General Johnson, explanation of no conflict of interest seems solid, but to try and preserve a fair trial for the defendants, he has been removed from the case. James watched the entire proceedings, smiling thinly as Fowler and her witnesses continued to paint Johnson as an ass. He too arched an eyebrow at the accusation of the Lance General, though perhaps he did not fully understand the consequences, and noticed Katana’s hurried departure. Somehow, I don’t think both Mr. Katana and our beloved Lance General will be walking back out of that room alive he grinned to himself, before watching as Niven took his exit. After a moment’s pause, James also regained his feet and followed the doctor out.

“Force it down our throats, eh?” he asked Dr. Niven, patting the doctor on the back. “I should think that RSU doctors were quite pleased with Jeff’s replacement. Back in the day, he would’ve just gotten a stick of oak to shove up there.” He smiled as the corporals walked in, not attempting to return salutes out of the knowledge he’d muck it up somehow. “Gentlemen.”

James blinked once or twice as his mind raced. Suddenly, though there were a half dozen strong examples, he found himself searching for one. At last, he latched onto the Veritas incident - not the strongest, perhaps, but he needed to start talking soon.

"About a year ago, myself and representatives of other world powers were invited to a conference in Veritas, Effit, by Pater Ibrahaim XVIII, with the goal of reducing tensions and increasing the probability of a pan-Tilsitian alliance. During the course of negotiations, I slipped and fell, nearly breaking my neck." His leg ached at the memory. "Sir Jeffery ensured, at great risk to himself, that I was properly cared for."

And nearly started an international war because of it, thought James, inwardly slapping himself. Idiot...if Jeff gets sent to the firing squad because of your incompetence, you'd best throw yourself off the ramparts when you get home! What about the damn coronation incident, or the treachery of Sentry Island...no! You had to chose Veritas, just because your damn foot hurts!

"Your majesty, let's continue the conference discussion, shall we?" she asked as her aide handed her a file. "Now once again, we see Admiral Williams running off half-cocked, disobeying orders. As for the war preparations, I suppose that's technically true...[if he gets cut off]...but really, as the interviews with Mr. Katana proved, Ibrahaim and his lap dog D'Analia were really motivated just out of spite and malice. "In fact, didn't Williams storm into Ibrahaim's castle and threaten the people who were watching over you?"
Katana watched the interaction and the aide working on the laptop, "I don't like the direction this is taking." he whispered to Niven.

"Nor do I. These things seem to be spinning a bit out of control."

James started to panic. "He'll twist everything- he already tried to kidnap Jeff once and kill him---[cut off by a judge of some sort, I assume? ;)]"

He gets out of his chair and walks into the hallway. He presses a button on his watch and a phone implanted in his head is activated.
"Niven residence."
"James, this is Niven. Tell all of the boys that the one who takes care of Pater Ibrahaim gets a 2 million dollar bonus. He has become a problem"

"Well," came the static-filled and accented response, "I must admit that I was a little surprised to see him there, seeing how his government had made no prior arrangments, but we were gathered in peace. The next time I saw him, he was pointing a gun at me and my doctors while we were trying to save the Iansisleans life - which was a mistake I'm sure I won't find myself repeating. Then those Imitorans under his command came at us, shot one of my guards and assualted me, threw gas gernades, and fled the scene."

Jeff swallowed hard as Ibrahaim's voice came over the monitor. He (and Niven can feel this when he returns to the room) suddenly felt rage, rage and fear split his mind as he remembered what happened to him under Ibrahaim's 'care'. He slowly wrapped his hands around the arms of the chair.

Chris looked down at the sudden creaking sound, noticing Jeff was squeezing the arms of the metal chairs into a new... shape.

“Now we’ve seen your actions and the results of them as they deal with multiple nations. If you had a soldier who had a history of violating orders, who showed a disregard to his superiors, who in fact had promised his life to another government and disobeyed you, would you ask for him to be sanctioned?

“That would depend on the end result of his actions and…”

“JUST ANSWER THE QUESTION! Would you expect someone who failed to obey you punished??”

“And what was the court marshal’s results?” Tasha asked.

“I was found innocent of violating the rules of engagement and of disobeying orders.”

“Now Admiral, much has been made of your actions in the past. Do you regret any of them?”

“Regret? No ma’am. I have done what I did with the best of intentions. Not for glory or power. But for my friends, for the people I care about,” Jeff said quietly.

“What about the incident in Effit?”

“If I’d had true malice in my heart, I would have torn that god damn palace to the ground to protect James from D’Analia and Ibrahaim.”

“Admiral, would you please describe to the court what you were protecting the refugees from?”

“Objection!”

“Goes to background and personality your honor.”

The judge thought a moment, “Lance General Johnson opened the door. Objection overruled.”

Jeff looked down again for a moment, “Ma’am, when we were moving those refugees through the forest, we stumbled into a village. It was… front-row seats to a massacre, ma’am. There were men butchered, not just killed, but their bodies were destroyed, women who were beaten to death, their bodies mutilated, children dead in the streets. One body I saw was hanging in the town square, it was… I couldn’t tell if it was a man or woman,” he said quietly, dabbing one eye quickly. “That’s why we were there ma’am. The people that came with us, that were on the helicopters, we were their only hope. The men who died in that forest believed in what we were doing. That the refugees had the same right to survive as anyone else. That they didn’t deserve to die in that horrible way.”

There was a small pause as Jeff collected his thoughts.

“That’s what we were protecting them from.”

A young woman walked into the room and sat down at the witness stand.

“Ma’am. Why did you ask to speak here today?” Tasha asked.

“This should not be happening,” she said quietly. “Those men,” she pointed at Chris and Jeff, “Saved us from brutal death, or rape, or both. They saved our children, our families, they believed in us when no one else did. They did what they did, with no help, knowing they were alone out there.”

"Your honors, I offer the following recon tape into evidence."

"Jeff, I don't know how much more these refugees can take. God knows how long they've been walking before they reached the embassy."

"I know Chris," Jeff said, "But we can't give up on them, and they can't give up on themselves. They have nothing to return to, as do we. There's no embassy now, no safety for us or them. Our only hope is to get clearance for the choppers and meet up someplace open and get the hell out of here."

"They gave up their chance for peace," Bashira said, tears streaking down her cheeks, "for us to live."

"Final statements?"

Colonel Panierre stood first.

"If it please the court, while many of us agree with the end result of the actions of Admiral Williams and Captain Markson. It goes without saying that they violated their orders. Without that order, there is nothing to keep a military together, there is only chaos.

"This is not the first time for the Admiral to disobey orders, to turn into a renegade, his history is full of disregard of people's orders, of doing as he wished. It is time for this court to punish him, to tell him that the ends do not justify the means."

She sat down. Tasha started to stand, Jeff put his hand on her shoulder shaking his head, then stood up and hobbled in front of the judges.

"Lady and gentlemen of the tribunal. Edmund Burke once wrote 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.' Before I am an ambassador, or a knight, or an admiral, I'm a human being, one who believes that to remain human means doing what is right."

He turned and looked at the families of the soldiers that died, "I wanted to tell the families, your sons, husbands and fathers didn't die for nothing. They died believing that these people had a right to go on living. That despite nationality, or orders, or tribal and religious boundaries, we all have a right not to live in fear of pain and death."

He turned back to the judges. "We did not desert our posts, we did not run from danger. We stood on a line, protecting those who could not from the face of evil, evil in its most pure form.

"I do not regret my actions, and those men who stayed behind and the marines from Iansisle who risked their lives to come in for us, they are heroes.

"If you feel it necessary to blame someone for disobeying orders. Then I must accept responsibility for our actions."

Jeff sat back down next to Chris and Tasha.

Katana opened it and read the letter inside. He looked, shocked. "If you will excuse me," he said quickly before walking back into the Ministry of Justice.

----------

A man walked into Chris and Jeff's cell. "Gentlemen, it is time," he said handing them their dress blacks.

Jeff and Chris nodded to each other, "we'll be out in a moment."

The two men changed into their dress uniforms and walked out into the hallway, where they were led back toward the tribunal room.

----------

Jeff and Chris, medals shining and capes flowing as they walked (or in Jeff's case hobbled) into the courtroom. They were escorted in front of the tribunal instead of back to their desk as the three judges walk in.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the head judge said, "This has been a very trying case for us, many emotions have been pulled to the front during the testimony. However, we have finally reached a decision."

"On the charge of desertion, we find Captain Christopher Markson, not guilty.

"On the charge of dereliction of duty, we find Captain Christopher Markson, not guilty.

"On the charge of refusal to obey a Ministry Flag Officer's orders, we find Captain Christopher Markson, not guilty. Sargeant-at-Arms, please escort the Captain out."

Chris and Jeff knock fists quickly.

"See ya on the outside Jeff," Chris says before they lead him away.

"On the charge of desertion, we find Admiral Jeffrey Williams, not guilty."

Jeff smiled, he'd dodged the worst charge, the one worthy of a firing squad.

Takeo turned to Niven with relief, "Well that takes care of the firing squad."

"On the charge of dereliction of duty, we find Admiral Jeffrey Williams, not guilty."

Katherine squeezed Niven's hand.

"On the charge of Refusal to obey a Ministry Flag Officer's orders, we find Admiral Jeffrey Williams, guilty, with cause."

Jeff's head dropped slightly at that. The uproar started quickly.

Takeo turned to Niven, James and Katherine, "It's not that bad. Guilty with cause means they find he had cause to do what he did, but is still partly guilty."

"Order!! Order!! Sentence to be handed out now," the judge said as the Sargeant-at-Arms walked up to Jeff.

"Admiral Williams, this tribunal finds you guilty of refusal to obey order, but we understand, and cheer the reasons you did it. Our cause came from you not at least trying to receive orders to do what you did, and your actions in the past, both for good and ill, were considered in our decision.

"We issue the following punishment for your actions:

"First, you are demoted one rank, from Rear Admiral to Captain First Class," she said.

The Sargeant-at-Arms took Jeff's lapel gently, "I'm sorry Admiral," he whispered as he ripped the Admiral's star from his lapel. Jeff's jaw clenched as he heard the star rip through the fabric.

"Second, you are to lose all command priviledges."

The Sargeant-at-Arms took a hold of Jeff's submariner's trident pin and ripped it off, then ripped off his Naval Assault Wings. He turned and walked away.

"Thirdly, you are sentenced to five years of hard labor at the Tertiron Reef Naval Prison, suspended and pardoned. This suspended sentence has already been pardoned by President Katana."

Jeff looked ahead, still watching the tribunal.

"And lastly, you are to serve those five years as a part of your new permanent station, a station we believe you to be exceptionally suited for. This assignment is permanent and irrevocable, except by Presidential Order..."

Jeff nods slowly, Get it over with he thought.

"... Captain Williams, you are ordered to report to the Larkinian Embassy in Iansisle, where you will live permanently, as Ambassador to Iansisle. This court is adjourned."

James, in the meantime, had returned from the lavatory just in time to hear the judgment and sentecing. He joined the general applause and cheering, and made to follow Dr. Niven down to the floor.

Katherine flew into his arms, almost knocking him off balance. She kissed him over and over.

Afterword

Larkinia Military Command

General Johnson had left the Ministry of Justice after the conference in the judges chambers. Katana, the little bastard, had stormed into the meeting with them to demand the charges be dropped. He'd never understood the military, why did Johnson expect anything different.

During the meeting, Katana had grilled him about Williams' orders, why he'd been sent to Tharkold in the first place. Johnson had told Katana to talk to Parliament. He'd figured that those chuckleheads would keep Katana guessing, for a while at least.

Damn, these were easy orders, why had Williams' disobeyed them. The staff would have been taken out of the country, the new king would have killed the 'rebels' and taken control of the country, and everything would have proceeded as normal.

Johnson punched up his terminal and quickly set aside airline tickets heading into Ziobia for a meeting. Besides, he needed some time away from Mil-Com...

"Exactly," Katana said, smiling at James, "You see, when Lt. Weber handed me the envelope with the court's decision in it, they had forgotten to include the pardoned sentence, and the permanent assignment. So I had to 'remind' them of this. Which is why I had to leave so abruptly, and I apologize for that. And now no one will be able to send the Ambassador elsewhere. And I hope that the Ambassador will be able to behave himself there.

"I'm not so sure the Ambassador will be able to 'behave' himself in the conventional meaning of the word, but Iansisle will always be glad to have him, regardless. And he'll be most welcome in the House of Callahan, naturally." The High King chuckled to himself. "You know, Mr. President, there are times I wonder just what's holding the Commonwealth together, with a thousand different interests tugging it in two thousand different directions. I think it may even be as simple as a hero."

He watched Kate and Jeff celebrating with a pleased sigh. "I think Iansisle's found one at last, for the first time since the days of my ancestors." He gestured up where the Iansislean military men were already fighting over which way would be best to paint Golden Agate red. "I've been meaning to speak with you, your majesty. There has been rumblings of the Ambassador taking an interest in the C.C.P. "Jeff may be a hero after all, but I'm afraid he'll quickly find that the world of politics is a different beast to tame than a battlefield."

James couldn't help but chuckle a little as he replied "In my experience, Mr. President, the only difference between the Combined Parliament and a battlefield is the fact that there's less bloodshed in a war." He wiped his eyes. "Seriously, though, a small time ago, Jeff did indeed address the Combined Parliament, and he managed to actually get both sides of an argument to agree with one another. He has a real gift for speaking, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him holding the Prime Ministership, with any party, within ten years.

"However, I'm not sure he's quite ready to make that radical a change yet. Jeff's just been through several very trying events, and he needs time to recuperate. Not that I expect him to pay any heed to common sense, naturally, but the next General Election hopefully won't be too soon."

"Three hats, no less!" insisted James, crossing his arms with a grin, "Or I may have to tell Mr. Katana here certain stories I heard from Father Tony!"

"I... oh no!"

"Hmmm, I may have to hear more of these," Katherine winked to James.

"Bah, they wouldn't dare!" laughed James. "There are two things that count in Iansislean nobility: money, the support of the crown, and popularity with the masses. Right now, you've got all three!

"Not to mention that I should appreciate some help trying to drag those brutes out of the stone age. And there's no one better to do that with than a war hero." James snapped his fingers suddenly. "That reminds me! Now that you're to be an Iansislean citizen, you'll be eligible for Ian's Cross, First Class! Of course, I'll have to talk to Parliament and the Admiralty about that one, but I'm sure we could swing something," he winked.

"When you put it that way, I guess I might be able to get them out of their torpor. Although I don't know about a war hero..."

"Jeff, accept it, you're a hero. Like it or not, you're a hero," Katherine told him.

"Yeah, come on Jeff," Chris said. "Look at what you did here."

Jeff shook his head at Chris, "Look at what we did here. I'm no more a hero than anyone else there." Chris and Katherine looked at him sternly. "Well, when you put it that way," he winked.

"Ian's Cross?" Jeff asked. "Well, what can I say to an honor like that, other than thank you James."

"Don't worry, Kate," winked James. "I'm sure Jeff would love to tell you them."

"Ian's Cross?" Jeff asked. "Well, what can I say to an honor like that, other than thank you James."

"Pah, it's the least I could do for my brother," insisted James, adding who I let down so badly inside his head. "And Captain Markson, I'm sure we could swing an Ian's Cross for you as well, though it can only be third class, unless you also want to apply for Iansislean citizenship."

"I'm sure he'd love to tell me as well," she said grinning at Jeff.

Jeff looked stunned, "I.. um... well... there was this time at a convent..."

"Whoa whoa!" Chris said, "let's not be hasty here."

"Pah, it's the least I could do for my brother," insisted James, adding who I let down so badly inside his head. "And Captain Markson, I'm sure we could swing an Ian's Cross for you as well, though it can only be third class, unless you also want to apply for Iansislean citizenship."

"Well, I'll consider the application," Chris said with a smile, "And I'd be humbled to receive this honor. After all, when you have such incompetent leadership," he joked, jerking a thumb towards Jeff, "Someone had to step up and lead the team," He concluded winking at Jeff.

"Aw, right before the best part!" winked James, patting Jeff on the shoulder. "I'm sure there'll be plenty of time for stories later."

"Well, I'll consider the application," Chris said with a smile, "And I'd be humbled to receive this honor. After all, when you have such incompetent leadership," he joked, jerking a thumb towards Jeff, "Someone had to step up and lead the team," He concluded winking at Jeff.

James laughed lightly. "And Iansisle recognizes the fine job you did at that, Captain Markson." He glanced about briefly. "In fact, if Sir Richard wasn't already out getting as drunk as an old sailor can in this town, I'm sure he'd love to pin his own on you." (Jeff, I believe, already holds the Third-class Cross...right?)

(oh, and any idea on when's Part III going to start? Or do we still have to party old skewl in this thread? ;))

(I think he does, and we'll get part 3 going shortly, I'm working on it now. It's going to be open invite, since it's the party at the Presidential Palace)

Markson chuckled, "Admiral Tri might want to watch out then, there are some slippery places in town. I believe you were in a few of them for a bachelor party. And speaking of bachelor parties, Jeff I believe King James needs one thrown..."

Jeff grinned and started looking for his PDA/Phone.
