:cry: We are just too confused. Above this post, there are a lot of posts with table-y things. All of them talk about who is ranked what when. We find that Snub Nose 38 appears to be ranked 6th, 10th, and 12th at what we think is "now" - but maybe not(?). Since we entered WC9 ranked 20th, all would be an improvement and make us happy. But, we don't know how happy. :shock:

We were able to sort out that the couple of times we seemed to be 5th, or 3rd, were actually just a measure of how well we seemed to be doing in WC9 up to that point.

do the qualifiers not have an impact on final rankings? i mean like, say you qualified on 24 points, and the team ahead of you qualified on 28, and in the world cup you went through your group on 3 points but the side that finished ahead of you in qualifying lost every game...

say if you then lost your second-round game, would the other team still be ahead of you in the rankings, seing as youve only got 27 points overall but they have 28...

OOC: The way I've been doing it, which I thought was the way we'd done it in the past, is that the teams that don't qualify fill positions 33 and lower according to their qualifying performance. Those that do qualify fill positions 1-32 based on their Cup performance (only). Therefore, West Arridia, Nikea, and TnUI, all of which qualified with fewer than 28 points but earned 0 points in the Cup, are ranked ahead of East Spaam, which earned 28 points during qualifying but did not play in the Cup.

My most recent post is the standings according to this system. (Part of the reason for the confusion was that some earlier posts had them ranked round-by-round, rather than through the entire Cup. Mainly this is because I know damn little about football. 8) )

Spaam's posts are his proposed ranking system, which employs odd, arcane calculations apparently based on the real-life method, which I don't even pretend to understand. We may be using those from next Cup on, apparently.

The difference here is, that my rankings aren't calculated purely from this World Cup only, so eliminating a lot of the chance factor with rankings. That is why Spaam is still ranked ahead of East Spaam, even though East Spaam did better than Spaam in this World Cup.

Now as for the arcane method, its really not THAT hard. I'll go through a calculation with you guys, so you can do it yourself!

Europa Britannia beat Liverpool England 2-1
Europa Britannia's has 1392 ranking points, Liverpool England has 1441

Now, the number of points for a match is K * (W - E)
K is the importance of the match - 60 for World Cup matches, and 40 for qualifiers. K is increased by 1/2 if the match was won by two goals, and 3/4 + (N-3)/8 if the match was won by N > 2 goals. ie 3 goals: 3/4, 4 goals 7/8, 5 goals 1, etc....
W is the result of the match - 1 for a win, 0.5 for a draw, and 0 for a loss.
E is the expected result. E = 1/(10 ^ (-dr/400) + 1) where dr is the difference in ranking.

Now lets calculate!

K = 60 (World Cup match, and it was only won by one goal)
W = 1 for EB, and 0 for LE
dr = -49 for EB, and 49 for LE
E = 0.43 for EB, and 0.57 for LE

Therefore, EB gets 34 points, and LE loses 34 points.

Hence, EB now has 1426 ranking points, and LE now has 1407.

Easy! (ish)

Of course, if you guys think we should make some changes to these rankings, then please tell me. Also note that K is only adjusted for the winner.... it stays the same for the loser, no matter how many goals the game was lost by. I did this by interpreting being won as only affecting the winner.... And also, if the match going into PSO, then it is counted as a win, and so equivalent to winning the match by one. Possible changes, could be changing the K so it is increased for both parties, and haveing a match which goes into PSO counted as a draw....

If I could figure out what you just said, I'd ask you to make some changes :wink:

^ is the symbol in computer code for an exponent. So, 10 to the power of (-dr/400).

Personally, I think it's a little too complex for our needs, and I suspect it would make it much more difficult for newbies to advance. (Currently, they're sure to improve greatly in even one Cup -- even OBD, the low performer in WC9, went from rank 150 to rank 82, and so is that much more likely to beat newbies next time, leading to an even better rank; whereas with Spaam's system, they'd be well under 1000 points, and could have a tough time making that up, because beating the newbies wouldn't give them as much of a boost.) It's also harder to spot errors, if any are made -- with the table, it's pretty easy to note a goal-difference mistake (or whatever), but with this, you'd have to doublecheck a lot of math.

On the other hand, it does prevent one good season from having quite as much impact (as in the case of Rejistania, who went from 150 to 38, or West Arridia, from 69 to 32 -- or, in the opposite case, Timway, from 5 to 41).

The ELO system might be going too far the other way. Indeed, if you look at the RL world rankings, South Korea reaching the semi-finals of WC2002 sent them up into the top 15 or so...

My proposed system, which is also based on RL (not the RL world rankings, but the RL method of seeding for the World Cup finals draw):

Results from the last three World Cups with the following multipliers for points (not GD) applied:

Last WC: x3
Second-last WC: x2
Finals matches: x1.5 (in addition to 'recency effect' - so the last WC finals count x4.5)

So for instance: KP would get (29x3)=87pts for their WC9 qualifying, (3x4.5)=14.5pts for their WC9 finals performance, and some other points for WC8 and WC7 qualifying.

Liverpool England would get (35x3)=115pts for their WC9 qualifying, (12x4.5)=58pts for their finals performance (and counting) and lots more WC8/WC7 points.

While many have called for a ranking system that prevents the sudden massive rise/fall that we've seen on too many occasions, we also don't want to go so far that rankings move up and down with the solemnity of, say, chess rankings.

Though I don't have anything specific in mind, I like the suggestion that we use a simple ranking system that takes into account both Cup and qualifiers, and takes into account more than one Cup. I'd be interested in seeing the full rankings post-WC8 and currently, using KP's system. Anyone want to calculate them?

It's realistic but somewhat exaggerated to make it more fun - let's face it, isn't that what NS is all about?

OK, I've completed my analysis of WC8 using KP's proposed ranking system.

One thing I noticed in the middle of this: hosts miss out on A LOT of points by missing qualifying. So I threw in a little something extra: For each Cup, I took the average number of points for all the teams (qualified or not) and gave the hosts qualifying credit as though they had earned that many points. Note that this is significantly less than the average amount for the qualified teams, so it's still pretty balanced. For both WC7 and WC8, this number came out to be 14 points (rounded to the nearest whole point).

Bedistan: I like the variation you've used to compensate for hosts missing qualifying.

It is interesting that a side like Squornshelous, which flopped somewhat in WC8 after being strong in WC6/7 (I assume, I wasn't around for WC6), is ranked 10th. They're probably in an even better position after WC9, even if we did beat them in an irrelevant match :D Also that a side that missed out in one World Cup qualifying (TnuI, Tanah Burung) suffer on points but not immensely - they're ranked around 25th. (Doubly pleasing - Tanah Burung are ahead of Jacktazea, the nation that qualified ahead of them with a lower rank and - equally importantly if not more so - *no RPs* :D)

A post-WC9 version would be interesting. I'm especially looking out for how much benefit the 'breakout teams' get - West Arridia, East Spaam and of course Kaze Progressa ;) I know KP would gain 101.5pts, but obviously we lose points as the multipliers for WC7 and WC8 wear off. (Though, tbh, that's not a lot of points we lose.)

This also reminds me - for the spreadsheet used to calculate points under this ranking system should it be used, the points from each World Cup qualifying and each World Cup finals should be kept separately and the formula for the total should be:

We understand Bedistan must face Liverpool England in a rather important football match. Should the Bedistan Lions wish to employ the services of one "Margaret" in her capacity as - well - shall we say a "convincer" of the random number gods, it can be arranged quite handily. Simply write "Yes" in large, bold letters across the bottom of this note and place it, along with VG500,000, in a plain brown paper bag in the hollow of an old oak tree on the south side of the big pond in Remington Park in Sten, capital city of Snub Nose 38. Or, if you wish the upgrade from rubber chicken to real (frozen) chicken, VG750,000.

"Hey, where'd he go?" Gene Barber searched his office up and down, but he was unable to find the strange man who had just appeared. His eyes soon fell upon the note on his desk.

Barber picked up the phone and dialed it. "Hello, Steve? Yeah, I contacted them. Well, there's this note here on my desk..." Barber read the note into the phone. "You will? Excellent. Any idea what the conversion rate is to the vodka gimlet? No? Hmm, I guess we'll figure something out..."

A few hours later, a Bedistan Intelligence Agency (BIA) operative departed a plane that had just landed in Sten. He placed a brown paper bag inside a tree in one of the parks there: a bag including the note with the word "yes" written across the bottom and þ3,000,000.

þ = bakrani, the currency of Bedistan, equal to approximately US$0.625. The Department of Sports and Games had no idea how much a VG was worth, so they sent a fairly large amount to be on the safe side. ;)

*we are in the library in the mansion of the minister of athletics, olympics, and alcoholic beverages. it is a very large library. margaret is busy in one corner, fussing about with her paraphenalia over what appears to be a marble topped sideboard. the minister is seated in a very large overstuffed chair positioned 'just-so' between a nice oak side table and a massive set of bookshelves. he has a brown paper bag on his lap, and a huge grin on his face*

- Well, at least thaw the chicken. And put on your best robes. I'll go get the fancy candles, and...
