OOC: This thread is going to be for, you guessed it, World Cup 9 scores and tables. 8)

We're currently working on setting up for the Cup, and we plan to start within the next couple of days.

In the meantime, a word about the workings of the Cup.

Matches will be decided based on a formula similar to the previous Cup's, taking the offensive and defensive histories of the nations into account as well as their rank. In addition, there will be two potential bonuses. The first is the home-field advantage; the home team will have its defense increased by 20 points -- with the 'average' being 1000, this is a small but significant number, and it applies to all games. The second is the roleplay advantage. Any team which makes roleplay posts to the World Cup thread will receive a bonus based on their 'ratio' of participation. The maximum 'ratio' is one roleplay post per two matches (so as not to penalize those who miss or are late for one or two, when they otherwise participate regularly), and will result in a 20-point bonus. Making even one roleplay post to the World Cup thread guarantees at least a 1-point bonus throughout qualifying. The roleplay bonus applies only during qualifying. I would hope those who make it through to the Cup proper would roleplay it regardless.

A roleplay post is defined as any post that's longer than a sentence or two and describes some or all of a World Cup match. Format doesn't matter; a sportscast, news article, interview with a player or manager, or a detailed statistic overview (such as some teams posted to the WC 8 thread) all count. Posts to related threads, such as the World Cup 9 Roster thread, also count as roleplay posts. What doesn't count? "We win 8-3." Looking at the score thread could tell us that. Make an effort to give us some flavor detail, and it'll count.

There are 80 qualifying teams. They will be arranged in eight groups of ten. Each team will play against each other team in its group twice; once at home, once away. The top three teams in each group will qualify for the Cup, along with the two hosts.

The only reason i complained was becuase the results are total BS. I was ranked 9th in the world and yet didn't managed to qualify but when i was unranked i got in No problems and my 2nd lowest ranked got me in but my high ranks don't. WTF is up with that.

How many games did William Wallace play in?

Wallace played in 52 out of 58 games so far. (including three to date in WC9)
He sat out the final qualifiying game of WC8 against Svecia and then got injured against TBF in the group stage of WC8 and retired.

Hope has played in 42 games. 3 so far in WC9, all 14 in WC8, 15 in WC7 and 3 as starter in WC6. (he also made 7 substitute appearences in WC6)

Well, our best would be Knuckles, but I really have no idea if he's scored 25 or more goals. Whatever, this will be his last WC - he's getting on in years. He is considering the possiblity of managing/coaching, though.

TB's top scorer is Ab Francisco who played in WC2-6, but i haven't kept records. He is, however, our worst coach ever.

Good idea :) amidst the spam I've spotted a mistake - Kegarna beat Soviet Haaregrad but don't have a win to their name in the tables. As a result of this (and possibly another mistake, haven't really looked) there appear to be a total 9 wins and 7 losses, when the two numbers should of course be identical.

Yeah, and it gets weirder. But I did check it, several times, and it works out. In trials, I get varying scores for them.

It just happens that every official score I've generated involving them so far has been a scoreless draw. Randomness does strange things, sometimes, and the results overall still fall well within bounds, although a couple of high-ranked teams are decidedly underperforming so far. Haraki in particular has been extremely unfortunate. I expect they'll start winning a few more, though...

As I recall, this is one of the reasons we moved to two matches against each opponent in qualifiers, instead of one. Helps eliminate the extremes in the randomness.

But it's funny how several of the surprise flops are among the top non-RPing nations. Whether by accident (pure randomness) or design (the RP bonus) this is great stuff to watch.

Heh. Damn annoying timings... it's clear the Timway boys have faced problems, shall we say? (TnuI had the same issues for WC8 and didn't qualify)

And the RP bonus is maxed out with just 50% of games RPed so there should be a comeback any time soon. Here's hoping.

The RP bonus isn't that big of an impact. At most, it's equal to home-field advantage. I believe it's made a difference in the outcome of two games so far over the first six days. (Although it has increased goal difference once or twice without changing the outcome, so I suppose there's some impact there, too.)

Speaking of which, day 5 scores will be up in four to five hours. Day 6 scores have been generated, and will be posted by Europa Brittania some time Saturday, because I'll be out of town. Day 7 scores will be up late -- no sooner than 7 PM US Eastern.

Speaking for Group 8 (and I have absolutey no reason to assume that I can speak for Group 8, but what the heck) Demonic Beings are forgiven. Holiday (or as we call it on this side of the puddle, vacation) is, well...is. You can't RP if you ain't there.

Crap, you're right. I missed a comma, and my autosequencer munged group one. The referents are off starting with day two.

There are a couple of options here:

1. Redo day 1 using the altered referents. Which means group 1's sequence doesn't quite match the other groups', but means no future work needs to be done. Scores and tables would still be off until Sunday, as that's the soonest I can generate a new set of scores.

2. Redo days 2-7 using the correct referents. Means the game sequence will match the other groups, but likely a one-day delay in generating group 8.

3. Keep things as-is, adjusting future days on the fly to avoid triplicated games. No retconning, but it's also the option with the most possibilities of something else going wrong in the future.

Those of you in group 1 in particular can discuss which you'd like done. Personally, I'd favor option 1 as the simplest, but I know it's a pain to invalidate a day's worth of RP.

Well I would prefer something other than Group 1, but that's only because we drew with LE away :D

Seriously, go with whatever's easiest. And invalidating a day's worth of RP is going to suck, but so are all the alternatives. I knew this was a tough group to get, but this is all we need.

I'd say option 1 (which is redo day 1) will be the easiest. for all those worrying about any RPing already done, just wipe them out or redo them. Its just one match anyway.

Nup, there was a MAJOR glitch there.... Zinkoland beat me, which
meant I couldn't qualify - the only time I've not qualified. Zinkoland

They won't have any work once the ubersheet is finished.

ONe thing (and I'm not on either side but this should be taken into consideration), the pure amount of nayions in the qualifying stages means, amoungst others, loads of matches, loads of posts, and loads of arguments (if the plan goes ahead some nation might argue over who will RP a certain match).

I believe that RPing in the qualifying stages should be optional and left to the disgresion of those involved however RPing in stages afterwards I think should be enforced.

Yes I know, as of yet I haven't RPed anything however being on holiday and also finding time to RP a match before yet another result has come in is hard to say the least. I do try and if qualify will deffinately RP then.

Just a couple of points - then SN38 will shut up and follow whatever rules are established.
1. BEFORE we adopt the "Dump 'em if they don't RP" law, I think it should be established exactly what does / does not qualify as a good excuse not to RP. A few that I think should be acceptable are:
Not being anywhere near a PC;
PC breakdowns;
RL emergencies of any kind;
(this one is for the younger set) Parental Intervention of some kind;
(this one is for the young adults) Exams;
RL disasters (for example, the blackout in North America that disrupted stuff when Lemmy was handling his first WC as "Guest Host")
I'm sure there are others.
2. EVEN with # 1, above, there should be a committee (WCC?) that determines by vote who gets dumped - because there are going to be circumstances we don't cover in number 1, etc.
3. Establish two things about the RP requirement:
How many (percent?) matches must be RPed to NOT get dumped?
What constitutes an acceptable RP? (length? content? both? humor that doesn't meet any of the other criteria (I need this one)?...etc.
4. Will there be "warnings" issued to non-RPers (RP or get dumped)? By who? In the thread, or by TG?

I think this discussion belongs in the WC10 sign-up thread. But a couple of points:

- even with an uber-sheet, hosts will still have plenty of work (telegramming results etc) as well as having to RP the hosting, of course.

- maybe a less harsh thing would be to have the sign-up threads say right at the beginning: "this is a role-play." There are plenty of other sports -- and even football -- competitions on this forum where role-play is not necessary. Svecia is running a Cup for their region, for instance.

Yeah, there are plenty of good excuses not to report on every match. Dark Outcasts, for instance, has already established a record as someone who role-plays, even if not so much during this Cup for perfectly good reasons. Quohog could be another example, doing great RP in some Cups and then none in others, and i don't think anyone would propose to boot either of these countries.

There are a fair number of people who sign up and never again make a post, though, and those seem to be the ones this proposal is aimed toward. Fair enough, as long as the RP requirement is made explicit somewhere.

I've been pretty happy with the RP for this cup so far. It would be nice to get more newbies involved, but we're running at about 2 pages per matchday, so about... 40 posts per 40 matches? Of course, that's because some people do multiple posts on a single game, and some games are RPed by both sides, and some are OOC posts, but still, not too bad. We're never going to have 100% RP, because of real life if nothing else, but at least most of what we do have is quality.

Anyway, day 8 scores will be posted in 2-3 hours.

Ravenspire, all I wanted to say is: Give a 3-posts newb a chance, I was one when I first signed up!

I'll probably be the one who lays down the rules. Mainly it's Spaams idea, all he has to do is refine it a little.

Idea:

Give any nation wishing to participate in the WC a chance. If they do not RP after the 1st 1/2 of qualfying send them a telegram asking them to RP. Any RP will do even of it is just "2 great goals scored by Joe Bloggs secured us a 2-0 win over neverwhere...". In the second cup, they would however be expected to RP matches properley.

Idea 2:
The senate, the senate should be 6 representatives that have participated in more than 6 WC that a good RPers that are willing to do certain jobs to help the committee such as judge expolsion. The people in this should be decided by the WCC and you shoulkd serve 2 weeks to 1 month terms.

Idea 3:
To save the backlog on the forum, you could create a new forum (*Cough* *Cough* http://www.abelmore.com/phpBB2/index.php *Cough*) to deal with questions to the committees and deal with tecvhnical matters eg/ problems with the World Cup. All people in the World Cup would be expected to join that forum. Did I mention that I happen to have a spare phpBB forum?

We knew the Arridians had a great offense after their WC7 run, but this has to be their greatest feat to date. :D

I wouldn't like to see the Anti-Nazis offensive record, but the defence should be amazing 1 in 8 = 0.125 goals against per game - holy guacamole batman! as someone may have said at one point in the past!

I hope nobody starts thinking that all defenders are Nazis and all strikers are Communists. :D

Also, I think Timway, God Squad, Demonic Beings and Bullonien are teh top 'unlucky sides' atm... the top 'lucky side' has to be Lanky Dude or Terranos.

God Squad is definitely underperforming this time around. Most of the other high-ranked sides who'd been unlucky have mounted something of a comeback. Akbarland, Antaeus Rising, Timway, Audioslavia, The Lowland Clans, Demonic Beings, Bullonien, and The Dragonian Empire are still a bit low, although part of that is that group 4 has stayed so close -- Timway and Audioslavia are 5 and 6, but both are within 3 points of first.

Kaze Progressa seems to be having the best run of luck; 5-1-2 isn't too shabby in a group that contains 4 higher-seeded sides. Eauz is doing pretty well in that regard, too, as is Aquilla.

Among the unseeded sides, Terranos, Lanky Dude, and Auir II are all performing remarkably well.

Here's a scary bit of trivia for Cup vets: The best-performing side so far is Liverpool England. No surprise there. But the second-best is Gilmeecia. Bit of an improvement, over the last few Cups, eh?

The worst performance is One Blue Dot, who have yet to gain a point. Second is Wildthings Realm, who have yet to win a match.

Due to the performance of Defari in the past two world cups, we have decided to begin to search for a new coaching staff. We hope that our search will be a quick and fruitful one. I say stuff the playoff. Spaam did better than Timway, end of story. If East Spaam pulls out, next in line takes the spot. No reason why there needs to be a playoff, especially when there's no tie to break. If it's wrong for Spaam do move ahead, winning will not make it any more right. If it's right for him to advance, then losing will not make it wrong.

The way I see it there are two choices. The one Rav said, if you withdraw you withdraw both teams. Or you enter Spaam ranked at East Spaams rank, RP East Spaam pulling out and never enter a World Cup with it again.

re: the Spaam/East Spaam/Timway issue

This is what I would have recommended to the WCC and Spaam. I still recommend it for any future such occurances -

If a qualified nation ("puppet" or not) pulls out of the cup competition, then the vacated slot be filled by a competition between the top unqualified nation in each qualifying group. Single elimination, quick and done with.

In this case (leaving out for the moment that Spaam may have pulled out along with East Spaam), Spaam would be one of ten 4th place sides to compete for that spot. Timway, as 5th, wouldn't get to. Nor would any other 5th place side.

BUT...in this particular case the WCC (if they adopt this idea) will have to weigh into the balance of their decision the fact that Spaam (a few posts above this one) seems to have pulled both East Spaam and Spaam out. And the fact that there seems to be a general concensus that Timway should get the spot. If Spaam has pulled both E Spaam & Spaam out, then I think Timway becomes the "next side in line" for Group 4 - and should be one of 10 sides competing for the vacated slot.

If Spaam is still in, but E Spaam is out, then Spaam should be the side from Group 4 competing with nine others for the slot vacated by East Spaam.

I would argue that One Red Dot, Eauz, Antaeus Rising, The Lowland Clans, The Redavic Union, Rejistania, Warnocks Wizards, Bullonien, and The Weegies have as valid a claim to that slot as Timway/Spaam, whichever.

I tend to agree with Audioslavia on this, however this situation is slightly different in that there is a puppet nation involved. Imagine IRL if a colony of one country won a qualifying group. Given that, if Spaam would like to switch sides, let him do so as there apparently aren't guidelines set up for this issue. However, going by the table that LE posted, the switch were it allowed would effect the future rankings of three nations that finished above Spaam in the over all standings/ratings of the cup. Ourselves, Hell Bovines, and Bullonien would all drop a spot in ranking which we earned through the competition. This bothers me. Should Spaam be allowed to take East Spaam's spot, I suggest East Spaam, should it be allowed to enter any future cups, be unranked for the next competition. I didn't want to become involved in this issue, but as the decision may effect our nation, I thought I should speak up on this.

Peru play their subsitute goalkeeper, 2 defenders up front, and various other weird tactical changes. Argentina 6-0 Peru. Argentina went on to win the world cup, without being checked by FIFA. Cheeky rastards :D

Audio: Interesting! I had (truly) no idea this kind of situation had every occured in RL (although why I should be surprised is the real mystery). So, the apparent RL FIFA solution is - the next guy in line in that qualifying group. A couple of things, though.

In RL, qualifying groups are the various "continental" Football Associations - each of which, by FIFA rules, has a set number of sides to enter in the World Cup each time. So, in RL my suggested solution would not work, because it could (and probably would) change that number, and REALLY annoy an entire continent. Suppose when Yugoslavia collapsed, and withdrew, creating an unfilled slot in EUFA, FIFA had set up a competition such as I suggested. And suppose a country from CONCACAF won that competition. Europe would have (justifiably, I might add) errupted in dissention.

But in NS, we select Qualifying Groups at random. That random selection is why I feel the next one in line in EACH group deserves at least a chance.

Regarding the Argentina/Peru thing: What?! They did that?! And got a "severe talking to"?! In my opinion (which counts for zip in FIFA) when that little tidbit was discovered, they should have been banned from the next FIFA World Cup. Period.

So, I'm kind of torn here. I like my solution, but RL is different, and it would mean a delay of getting on to the Cup proper.

Which brings me to the other thing I agree with Audio about - Bottom line is, it's TnUI and Lemmy and Co. that have to resolve this.

I'd say we have a NSWC precedent: when Al Quds dropped out (well, ceased to exist) in WC5 the spot was filled by elimination knock-out among the third-place teams in all the groups (decision by majority WCC vote at the time). That's how Bedistan got in (and Audioslavia had a chance to -- this was actually your suggestion, Audio). And although my memory is hazy, there was some sort of play-down among the various third-place teams for the extra spots in WC6, wasn't there?

So whatever the powers-that-be decide is fine, and i'm very happy to see either Spaam, Timway or any of the fourth-place teams go through, but i think that we should be guided by our own precedent. No matter what happens, a decision on what is done when a qualifying team drops out is needed, so this confusion won't happen in the future. Spaam thought the next-best team would go through automoaticaly, Ravenspire thought that it was unfair to arrange things to get Spaam's main country through, and both are valid positions, but the whole thing would not arise if there was a clear rule in place.

Found it. Back on Matchday 3, I credited TnUI with an extra goal. The final chart has been edited, and the standings will be shortly.

Edit: Done. The shift in GD moves TnUI back one slot in the provisional listing, since Kingsford had more goals-for. Not that that actually affects anything at this point.

When Spaam gets online I'll speak to him and get this all sorted out. For the time being you can draw groups with a space in one of them for the final qualifier.

Personally, I thought this was all going to be fun and simple, but obviously people seem to be quite content with accusing me of cheating.

As a result, Spaam and East Spaam officially boycott this World Cup. This decision is final.

I wouldn't care if Spaam takes over East Spaam's spot, if East Spaam doesn't get to keep their rank. Other teams shouldn't have to drop down a place.

But since it seems over and done with, no big deal discussing it. I personally don't agree with it, but as long as one team outrightly replaces the other (rankings and all), I wouldn't put up much of a protest.

For the record, Tranquillitis is not a colony or anything of Nikea, and if Tranquillitis was 3rd in the group and Nikea was 4th, Tranquillitis would be playing in the WC. I don't personally agree with it, I don't see it as cheating, just not very sportsmanlike.

Nikea has a good point. Get rid of the East Spaamian ranking.

Oh, and as an aside to the Audioslavia IRL comment: Denmark won the tournament :D

Between this and the debate a week or so ago about banning Terranos to let Audioslavia through (back when it looked like he might not qualify; Audioslavia, to his credit, was opposed), and the exclusion of other newbies following the non-qualifications of teams like Tanah Burung the previous year, it's starting to look to me like some of you are demanding that certain teams make it on regardless of their performance, simply because they're vets.

Please tell me that's not the case, and that I'm missing something fundamental here. Because if that is the case... why bother with results at all? If you're going to ignore them or manipulate them, you might as well just RP everything to begin with.

It seems as if I've been pulled into a controversy over the weekend. Aside from my side not performing well, (East) Spaam wants to withdraw, giving Spaam their place. This does smack of trying to prevent Spaam's ranking from falling due to a poor performance in qualification.

As I suggested back in the signup thread for one of the cups, this could all be averted if there were...NO PUPPETS!! I refuse to enter a puppet as I do not wish to potentially take two qualifying spots at the expense of another player who misses out with his/her nation. It's simply about fair play and not being greedy.

While my team did not perform well enough to qualify, I have no qualms whatsoever with neither East Spaam nor Spaam taking the final qualifying spot in Group 4, since this puppet nonsense is ridiculous and such collusion by Spaam is in blatant violation of common courtesy and fair play.

However, I will not accept being promoted into Cup proper, as there are other teams who failed to qualify who performed better than myself. By the same token, if my nation were entered into a playoff system to take the place of Spaam, I would not be opposed to entering Cup proper based on the results of such a playoff.

Boycotting with both nations is a silly thing for Spaam to do, as both teams' players, but especially those on East Spaam will surely feel slighted, since they performed in outstanding fashion over the past two weeks.

I know that I do not have much if any say in this matter, but since I have been pulled into this I felt it necessary to give my opinion.

Furthermore, Belmore, I will accept your invitation to co-host if it is still on the table, but one condition I insist upon in our bid is a puppet-free Cup.

East Spaam may participate. If East Spaam does not participate, then that match will be voided, and Group A will consist of three teams (no replacement). When those three teams are scheduled to play East Spaam, they will instead not play that day.

The first match results will be generated tomorrow afternoon as scheduled.

Hmm... I don't know if I fully support this tri-grouping. Sorry to add my piss to the pot, because we all know the pot is extremely pissy, but I feel that somehow this is less fair to both the current members of group A and members of other groups.

First off, it's, in my opinion, unfair to other group stage members because now only one team in my group will not progress, instead of half of them.

I'd also like to, without accusing _anyone_ of cheating, bring up a similar situation, with OG and BD as hosts, and LE decided on who'd play who in the... semis, or quarters I think, and instead of facing higher ranked Bedistan, LE put himself against lower ranked Haraki.

Once again, not accusing anyone, just reminding.


Now, onto why it isn't fair to the members of Group A.

First off, I now lose my place and 2nd worst ranked team in the group to worst ranked team in the group, reducing my odds of being in the Top 2. Also, in my personal opinion, I just don't think one game less would cut it for deciding who's the best.. I know it doesn't make logical sense, but it just doesn't feel right. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but only playing two games and having three teams in qualifying doesn't seem right to me.

I did not influence, nor had the final say, on the hosts' decision. I was there as a consultant, to clear things up regarding East Spaam, and voice my personal opinons. Perhaps Ravenspire's wording was a bit off.

OOC: I haven't heard from EB yet, but since it's getting rather late, I'm going to go ahead and post scores. Please keep in mind that Group A's results are provisional until EB weighs in on whether to stick to our original decision or, in light of some of the further points that were brought up, to change to the elimination-tournament method.
