The reception...

On the lawn in the midst of the gardens on the old city walls, next to the Julian Palace, huge banquet tables are arranged for the two Imperial families and their guests. On the balcony above and behind the lawn sits an orchestra, softly playing gentle music as the guests eat their entrées. The finest and freshest produce of the entire Empire has been used to create a banquet of exquisite quality, catering to every pallette. The army of kitchen staff employed to produce the banquet has been working non-stop in a temporarily expanded kitchen which sprawls across the basement, cellars, and free-standing buildings of assorted purposes in and around the Julian Palace, and the fruit of their labours is being thoroughly enjoyed by the guests.

Back at the table, the Emperor Andreus leans across to his Excalbian counterpart.

"What did Your Majesties think of the ceremony?" he enquires. "Was Conomos' English up to scratch? I think it all would've been much nicer in New Rome, but all things considered, I'd like to think that our children found it to their satisfaction."

A cup-bearer refills the Emperor's champagne out of a silver jug.

Empress Elizabeth sits her glass of champagne on the table. “It was a beautiful ceremony, your Majesty. Anna and Joseph looked very happy, so I certainly count it a success!”

Emperor David IV finishes his champagne and sits the glass down near the waiting cupbearer, who refills it. “Yes, yes, I agree. Conomos’ English was fine. I’m frankly amazed at how multilingual your people are, your Majesty – French, English, even Greek. I find myself hoping that Anna will make her new domain multilingual – it might provide a nice incentive for us.”

The Emperor takes another drink and looks around. “It seems your son, Prince Andreus, has disappeared. I was hoping to get to know him.” The Empress, whose sharp eye usually sees much more than she lets on, leans in and whispers to the Emperor. “Ah,” he says. Turning back to Emperor Andreus, he continues, “I do hope that once problems are resolved in New Rome that you will be able to make a state visit to Exacalbia and to our children’s new land.”

"Absolutely Your Majesty." says Emperor Andreus. "As for the issue of our people being multilingual... well, perhaps my family and the courtiers aren't exactly representative of the average Pantocratorian in that regard. The official language of Pantocratoria is French, and has been for some time. Of course, English is such a widely spoken language, fluency in it is absolutely imperative for anybody who intends to hold a diplomatic position at any point in their lives. And Greek, well, Greek is the language of the first Pantocratorian settlers. It is still widely spoken throughout much of the Empire, especially around the Despotate of New Constantinople. We're actually trying to stamp out its usage - too many people speak it exclusively, which creates a bureaucratic nightmare given that every government agency conducts its business in French. But I'm boring you, Your Majesty."

"Since you brought it up, I was hoping to discuss the possibility of a state trip to Excalbia. After the elections and the swearing in of the new government, of course, and at Your Majesty's convenience." says the Emperor. "Perhaps you could suggest a date, if you're able to do so off the top of your head?"

As he talks with the Excalbians, the Emperor scans the crowd for his eldest, whose absence was noted by Emperor David, but he doesn't see him. He also notes the absence of several other Imperial children, but reasons that the others aren't up to the same sort of mischief as their brother.

"A what?" Augustulus Comnenus demands flatly of one of the servants, as he sit at the kitchen table talking to his chefs inside the Julian Palace.

"It is some sort of video game system, Your Excellency." replies the servant.

"A video game system?" Comnenus says, incredulous. "And this is for Prince James?"

"Yes, Your Excellency. Apparently Excalbian children enjoy video games." replies the servant.

"Yes well so do Pantocratorian ones, idiot, just not here in the Exarchate." quips Comnenus.

"All the video games are in French, or worse still, English." complains one of the chefs. "My kids can't understand them."

"Well what do you want me to do about this video game thingy?" Comnenus demands.

"I don't know, sir. I was asked by Princess Zoë to tell you to obtain the latest and greatest video game console with a selection of games for Prince James. Apparently she is under the impression that the young Prince finds the entertainments not to his liking." the servant says.

"NOT TO HIS LIKING?" shouts Comnenus. "Perhaps the Emperor could've given me, oh I don't know, more than 30 minutes notice before moving the entire Imperial Court of Christ Pantocrator here, along with a huge delegation of guests from across the globe for the biggest diplomatic event in his reign? Maybe then the entertainments would be more to the liking of every spoilt little brat and...."

The chefs all stand and bow their heads respectfully. Comnenus falls quiet, and turns right, to see Princess Zoë standing with an expectant look on her face.

"What's taking so long?" she asks, speaking French as opposed to the Greek of the Exarch and his staff's conversation just a moment ago, indicating the servant. "I sent you nearly an hour ago!"

"With respect, Your Highness," replies the Exarch. "I cannot simply manufacture a Rextendo or whatever the blasted things are called out of thin air."

"You said that about the fountains, and you handled that." says Zoë.

"Your Highness, many of those fountains were flown in, at great expense, from New Rome. They were not made out of air." replies Augustulus Comnenus.

"Whatever." says Zoë, disinterested. "Just get one, and soon. The Emperor asked my sister and I to look after Princess Rebecca and Prince James, to see that they enjoyed themselves. And it is obvious from the look on Prince James' face that he's not enjoying himself. He said he liked video games..."

"Note that the Emperor asked her, not the Exarch." sniggers one of the chefs in Greek.

"Oh come on, people, stop assuming I can't understand that backwards language of yours!" says Zoë as she rolls her eyes and leaves the kitchen.

Everyone sits back down.

"I am so sick of getting my marching orders from teenage princesses who think the sun rises and sets simply to provide them with a little illumination..." the Exarch complains as he reaches for a telephone and a phone book, and starts looking for 24 hour computer game stores in New Jerusalem...

Sitting together at one of the head tables are Princess Christianna, Princess Rebecca, Prince James, and Prince Peter from the Excalbian party, and from the Pantocratorian party, Princess Theodora, her uncle Prince Basil, his wife Princess Jacqueline, and their daughters Princess Helen and Princess Marie. There is an empty chair which was occupied by Princess Zoë until moments ago.

Prince Basil is engaged in conversation with Princess Christianna. Princess Jacqueline tries to keep up, but hasn't had much success thus far.

"So tell me about Citadel Excalbia again?" asks Princess Marie, continuing her conversation with Prince Peter.

"When will the dancing start?" Princess Helen asks Princess Theodora impatiently. Theodora shrugs her shoulders a little.

"I don't know. Who do you suppose you'll be dancing with?" Theodora asks.

Princess Helen starts scanning the nearby tables.

"Hmmm..." she says contemplatively.

"Do you like to dance, Your Highness?" Princess Theodora asks Princess Rebecca.

“Your elections are coming up shortly, are they not, your Majesty?” Emperor David IV rubs his chin thoughtfully and casts a brief glance at his wife. “As soon as you can complete your obligations with the new government, we would be happy to host you in Excalbia. Spring has finally come after a long, dark winter and that is really the best time to see our country.”

The Emperor smiles as he continues. “Of course, we will do a formal arrival ceremony at the Citadel, but then, we will have to take the boat across the river to the Summer Palace…”

“Yes, your Majesty,” Empress Elizabeth picks up from where her husband left off, “I believe you and your entire family would enjoy the Summer Palace. The grounds are beautiful in Spring and there are riding trails, fields, ponds and pools. Yes, I think it would be a wonderful time to come.”

“If you are in agreement, your Majesty,” Emperor David interjects, “I will find Ambassador Donnelly and have him contact the Citadel and have them begin making preparations straight away.”

Princess Christianna keeps up her end of the conversation and is charming and intelligent. At the same time, however, she begins scanning the crowd for potential dance partners.

"So tell me about Citadel Excalbia again?" asks Princess Marie, continuing her conversation with Prince Peter.

Prince Peter smiles. His manner is smooth and charming, if a bit distracted. “Yes, the Citadel. Citadel Excalbia was originally a steep hill situated on an island in the Valmiera River. A castle was built on top of the hill as early as 1098. The current Castle Excalbia – what everyone commonly calls the Citadel – was built in 1546. When Alsgood became King of the Northern Lands in 1594 it became his capital. Gradually, a town grew at the foot of the hill, on the same island, and that became the seat of government administration. It was a walled city until King Ragarth’s son converted to Christianity in 1809 and became Emperor Joshua I. So, I guess compared to your people we were heathens until fairly recently,” Peter chuckled. “Anyway, ever since Joshua, the Citadel has expanded to both banks of the river. Now it is a major city of some 5 million people. Still, right next to Citadel Island – where the castle and the all ministries are – we have Imperial Reserve Island. The Summer Palace is there and it is still like the pristine countryside. If you get the chance to see it, it is really quite lovely. Personally, though, I prefer the clubs on the right bank,” Peter adds with a mischievous smile.

"When will the dancing start?" Princess Helen asks Princess Theodora impatiently. Theodora shrugs her shoulders a little.

Princess Helen starts scanning the nearby tables.

“Oh,” Princess Rebecca smiles, “I love dancing! Will there be dancing! Do you think anyone will ask me to dance?” The Princess glances shly towards her father.

And in fact, there are a number of medals the High Command would like me to award to Excalbian servicemen and women who served with Lord Phocas and the Pantocratorian forces under his command in Espario some time ago, perhaps we could arrange to present them during the course of the trip."

Sir Constantine the Hardy is giving his congratulations to the bride and groom as the servers begin to lay out the next course.

"...and I wish you both the very best." Sir Constantine concludes when he notices that Anna is crying. "Anna, whatever is the matter?"

"Oh," Anna says, embarrassed, "Nothing's the matter, I guess I just hadn't thought about how much I'll miss you, and my sisters, and..."

She composes herself and smiles to Sir Constantine and Prince Joseph.

"You know how it is. Please, don't worry Joseph, I'm not having any doubts to speak of." she says. "I just... well I'll miss them. And you in particular, Constantine. You know that you've been like a father to my sisters and I."

Sir Constantine smiles uncomfortably.

"Please do look after them. Especially Theodora, she'll need you the most of all." Anna asks the knight, who nods.

"Of course." he replies.

"Thankyou, Sir Constantine." she says to the Chief Domestic.

Sir Constantine smiles at Anna, and steps back. He bows respectfully to Prince Joseph, and then returns to his place at the proper table.

Zoë returns to her seat at the table with her sisters and cousins.

"We were just talking about the impending dance!" says Theodora, greeting Zoë. She indicates Rebecca. "Her Highness is quite eager to dance, and just asked me who I suppose will ask her."

"Who would you like to dance with?" asks Zoë. She then remembers to try to keep James involved in the conversation as well. "And what about you, Your Highness?"

Princess Helen catches on and nods as if interested in Prince James' answer.

"It sounds like a fascinating country." Princess Marie replies to Prince Peter. "And I suppose these clubs on the right bank of the Valmiera, they play... modern music? From all sorts of people and places?"

She has quite a sincerely curious look about her as she leans in asks the question, and is totally unaware of how stupid the question might sound to some.

As a silver platter covered in the next course is laid down in front of Prince Basil, Princess Jacqueline, and Princess Christianna, Prince Basil pauses to gesture to it.

"You see? This is exactly what I'm talking about. The move to cut the palace budget is pure populism." he says. "Silver platters instead of gold ones. Does it actually make any difference to the tax payer? None, of course, but does it make any difference to those whose food is brought to them on the platter? Absolutely. If the Emperor is entertaining foreign dignitaries, as he is on this occassion, how much more of an impression could have been made on them with gold platters rather than silver? And surely, such an impression is worth far more than the few extra ducats a year each tax payer saves from the switch to silver platters. I love my sister dearly, but she simply has no grasp of these things, Your Highness."

Princess Jacqueline rolls her eyes and holds out her glass to be refilled with more champagne.

Across the courtyard, Prince Andreus and Madame d'Isakiosopolis emerge arm in arm from the Julian Palace - Madame d'Isakiosopolis' delicate evening gown and elaborate hairstyle both somewhat less neat and orderly than before. The two stroll through the formal garden back towards the tables, and stop by an elderly gentlemen, sitting at his place looking generally miserable.

"Ah, my dear Monsieur d'Isakiosopolis," Andreus says, greeting the old gentleman. "Your wife was nearly knocked over by one of those over-excited cherubs, so I took it upon myself to escort her safely back into your care."

"Hmmmmph." growls the old man, as Andreus guides his companion into her seat.

"Madame, as always, it was a pleasure." he says, kissing her hand, before returning to his proper place.

“An excellent idea, your Majesty,” Emperor David IV nods. “And I believe your First Admiral, Lord Phocas, may still be in the Excalbian Isles. It would certainly be appropriate to invite him to the ceremony. And, we may just need to reciprocate in a proper fashion.” The Emperor smiles and turns to look for his Ambassador.

“He really is like a second father to you, isn’t he, Anna?” Joseph leans close to his new wife and puts his arm around her. “I know you will miss him. Hmmm. Perhaps, if we can think of a way to lure him to our new land – what do you want to call it anyway? – at least for some regular visits.”

Zoë returns to her seat at the table with her sisters and cousins.

"We were just talking about the impending dance!" says Theodora, greeting Zoë. She indicates Rebecca. "Her Highness is quite eager to dance, and just asked me who I suppose will ask her."

Princess Helen catches on and nods as if interested in Prince James' answer.

Princess Rebecca giggles modestly and leans over the table towards Theodora, Zoë and Helen. “There are so many handsome young princes and nobles here. I’d be happy to dance with any of them! Or all of them!” She leans closer and giggles again. “We don’t have many dances back home – Father’s face turn positively white anytime I dance with the boys. I think he’s suspicious of every teenage boy.”

Prince James meanwhile is rolling his eyes. He turns at Zoë’s question. “Me? Dance? I don’t think so.” After a few seconds he remembers his manners. “Your Highness!”

Prince Peter smiles, showing a flash of his aunt Christianna’s high watt charm. “Oh, yes! All the latest music, dances and fashions. That’s what the Right Bank is all about. If you know the right places to look. I usually go incognito – no visible signs of royalty or security. It drives my uncle – the Emperor – mad sometimes. And Lord Corman, our Chamberlain. Even Aunt Elizabeth – the Empress – is a little put out sometimes, but Aunt Christianna is usually able to calm them down and convince them that it’s ok. It’s not like the Senate or the Bishops would ever choose me over Joseph to succeed Uncle David. And it’s not like I ever misbehave. Its just the paparazzi sometimes get a few pics of me. Not a big problem.” Peter smiles again. “So, what about you? Where do like to go and what do you like to do?”

Princess Christianna starts to say something then bites her tongue. As a well-known champion of the poor in Excalbia, she has some definite opinions on a few extra ducats for the average citizen versus gold platters. But, she reminds herself that she’s promised her older brother to be on her best behavior. Hence the more conservative than usual dresses and the quieter mouth. At last she nods. “Nevertheless, the meal looks delicious, your Highness.”

"But on to other topics, we simply must come up with a name for this country!" she says. "Do you want to start with suggestions?"

Zoë glances at Theodora, who nods knowingly.

"Our father is exactly the same way." she replies, before grinning and leaning towards Rebecca in a conspiratory fashion.

"Let's scandalise them both!" she says mischeviously as Zoë rolls her eyes and rubs her temples.

She summons a page, and then starts whispering instructions. The page listens in silence, before stepping back and bowing. The page starts weaving amongst the tables, stopping to speak to virtually every young male guest, who almost invariably end up peering over the heads of the other guests towards Theodora and Rebecca after receiving it.

Prince James meanwhile is rolling his eyes. He turns at Zoë’s question. “Me? Dance? I don’t think so.” After a few seconds he remembers his manners. “Your Highness!”

Princess Marie's eyes go wide as Prince Peter speaks.

"I uh..." she eventually stammers in reply, her brow furrowing as if something was only just occuring to her. "I... I... I don't... DO... anything. I sit around in palaces and gossip with vapid courtiers and listen to orchestras and... I'm sorry, Your Highness, but I'd so desperately like to be able to do that sort of thing. To be able to go to a place like the Right Bank and just... do things that a normal person does."

Marie quietens down, embarassed by her own brief outburst.

"If I... if I ever come to Citadel Excalbia... could you show me the Right Bank?" she asks.

"It's been at the forefront of your mind for weeks." murmurs Princess Jacqueline.

A smile broke across Joseph’s face. “As for our new country, I would favor naming it for you, her beautiful new queen. But failing that, I think perhaps something that incorporates your ancestry and heritage. Perhaps even something in French? What do you think, my Love?”

Zoë glances at Theodora, who nods knowingly.

Rebecca notices the looks from the teenage boys and quickly picks up on Theodora’s plan. She smiles conspiratorially at her new Pantocratorian friend and hides a giggle behind her napkin.

At the head table, Emperor David IV pauses in giving instructions to his ambassador, and turns to the sound of his daughter’s giggles. He looks around and sees several teen boys of dubious character looking at his daughter and Emperor Andreus’ middle daughter, Theodora. The Emperor’s face reddens and his fist slowly clenches.

“Calm down, David,” Empress Elizabeth whispers in her husband’s ear, “she is a teenager and you need to start letting her have a little fun.
The red drained from the Emperor’s face and he smiled at his wife. “It’s just,” he said under his breath, “that I still see her as my little girl. But you’re right.”

"Well, if you're too embarrassed..." Zoë says, trying to goad him into agreeing to dance.

“I’m not embarrassed by anything,” James says a little too loudly, jumping at Zoë’s bait. “If you’re daring me, then I’ll dance just to show you. But when you come to the Citadel, you’ll have to play one of my VR games and then I’ll…,” James feels a swift kick under the table from Rebecca and turns to see a sharp look from her before she goes back to smiling at the boys, “um… then we’ll see who gets embarrassed!”

Princess Marie's eyes go wide as Prince Peter speaks.

"I uh..." she eventually stammers in reply, her brow furrowing as if something was only just occurring to her. "I... I... I don't... DO... anything. “It would be my pleasure to show you the sights of Citadel Excalbia – especially the Right Bank.” Prince Peter leans closer to Princess Marie, I’ll even introduce you some of my friends from university who play in a band on the Right Bank. We’ll be their guests and have a blast.”

"Yes, it does indeed. The Exarch has outdone himself, and at such short notice too." he replies. "I'm sorry to have been boring you with all this talk of politics, its just, well, you know, with the election tomorrow, it really is at the forefront of my mind."

Sensing a little bit of tension, Princess Christianna simply smiles and nods. She takes a mouthful of the latest dish and resuming her search for a suitable dance partner.

Emperor Andreus’ displeasure is clear, but the Prince is more difficult to read. “It is unfortunate that you will not be able to join the rest of your family for a visit to Excalbia and your sister’s new nation. Hopefully you will be able to make the trip sometime in the future.”

OOC:
Wow, this is going again? Since when?
Probably since Wyrmberg went inactive, actually - haven't been on for ages due to exams at Uni :/

Oh well, hopefully Wyrmberg should be re-activated soon - is there still a place for me (i.e. for Prince Tharn) in the RP?

Guess that "gift" of his should be due to hatch any time now...

Definitely still a place for Tharn!

I telegrammed Wyrmberg and Excalbia as soon as I got back after about a month of totally unexplained absence for which I am extremely sorry. You probably didn't receive that telegram before Wyrmberg was deleted. Oh well! But definitely make sure Tharn makes it to the reception before the dance!

A smile broke across Joseph’s face. “As for our new country, I would favor naming it for you, her beautiful new queen. But failing that, I think perhaps something that incorporates your ancestry and heritage. Perhaps even something in French? What do you think, my Love?”

"Oh goodness, don't even joke about naming a whole country after me, Joseph!" Anna balks. She then gently bites her lower lip contemplatively. "There is a little chateau in the Loire Valley, in a village called Langeais, in which Ann of Brittany married King Charles VIII of France, thereby uniting Brittany with France, in... hmm... I think it was 14... erm... 1492, or thereabouts. An odd little place for a dynastic union to have taken place, if you've ever been there. But if are looking for a French name for a country ruled by the two of us, maybe Langeais could be such a name?"

The Emperor Andreus follows David's glare and then quickly notices the looks back and forth between various young gentlemen and the two princesses.

"The work of my daughter Theodora, no doubt." he says. "I've no doubt that Princess Rebecca is entirely innocent in whatever mischief is going on over there, Your Majesties. If it is causing you any distress..."

"Leave them be." groans Prince Andreus, a little louder than he intended. He instantly realises his mistake, and vows to lay off the champagne.

"Perhaps Your Highness would be more comfortable with Madame d'Isakiosopolis or Madame de Montmanuel..." the Emperor starts.

"Your Majesty," starts the younger Andreus.

"...or perhaps one of the serving girls. It is, however, clear that Your Highness isn't comfortable here." concludes the Emperor.

Prince Andreus folds his napkin and puts it gently on the table, before standing.

"Clearly, Your Majesty. I've not been comfortable since I left New Constantinople, I think." replies Prince Andreus. He nods politely to the two Excalbians, and then to his father. "Your Majesties, pardon me. It has been a pleasure to meet you."

The Prince then goes over to Joseph and Anna. He warmly embraces his sister.

"Congratulations again, Anna. I wish you a lifetime of happiness with Joseph. Mother would be so very proud of you today." he says.

"Are you leaving, André?" asks Anna, a little confused.

"I'm afraid I must." he replies, before turning to Joseph, whose hand he firmly shakes. "Congratulations, Your Highness. Or perhaps I should start calling you brother? You look after my little sister."

Prince Andreus finishes his congratulations, before turning again to depart, eliciting a barely suppressed expression of shock from most courtiers, not the least of which is Mme d'Isakiosopolis

"Oh please," says Zoë, "How hard can playing an RV game be, anyway?"

She pauses for a moment as Princess Helen snickers.

"Erm... I mean VR." says Zoë. "In any case, you can consider it a deal, Your Highness. You dance, I'll play your... erm... I'll play."

“It would be my pleasure to show you the sights of Citadel Excalbia – especially the Right Bank.” Prince Peter leans closer to Princess Marie, I’ll even introduce you some of my friends from university who play in a band on the Right Bank. We’ll be their guests and have a blast.”

Princess Marie smiles broadly. They even have stage bands in this Right Bank! she thinks to herself.

"I look forward to it very much, Your Highness." she replies happily.

Sensing a little bit of tension, Princess Christianna simply smiles and nods. She takes a mouthful of the latest dish and resuming her search for a suitable dance partner.

Sir Constantine the Hardy approaches the table. He politely acknowledges everybody, before leaning over Theodora's shoulder to speak to her.

"Whatever you're doing, neither your father nor Emperor David look particularly pleased about it." warns Sir Constantine.

Theodora blanches a little, but doesn't falter in her resolve. She sees Prince Andreus leave our of the corner of her eye.

"Perhaps I shouldn't be so concerned about what pleases Their Majesties so much as what pleases myself and Princess Rebecca." ventures Theodora. "We're not doing anybody any harm, just having a bit of fun."

Sir Constantine looks over to Prince Andreus leaving through the formal garden, past the champagne fountain.

"Your brother can get away with more than you can, Theodora." Sir Constantine warns. "Look, have your fun, just... just don't say I didn't warn you. I guess I'll start trying to smooth things over with him."

Sir Constantine shakes his head and rolls his eyes.

“Langeais,” Joseph says, being careful of the pronunciation. “I think that would be wonderful. Should we tell our fathers then?”

The Emperor Andreus follows David's glare and then quickly notices the looks back and forth between various young gentlemen and the two princesses.

David IV looks momentarily uncomfortable. “I apologize if my show of, erm, anxiety caused you or your son any discomfort, your Majesty. I fear that I am at times overly protective of my daughter. My wife, in fact, had just reminded me that Rebecca is no longer the child I tend to see in her, but a young lady. And that certain attentions from young men her age, within proper bounds, are to be expected and, I suppose, tolerated. I hope that this has not caused any undo problem.”

Empress Elizabeth observes the tension for a moment then notices an excited look on Joseph’s face across the way. “I am sorry to interrupt, your Majesties, but it seems Joseph and Anna may have something to tell us. Perhaps they have finally named their wedding present.”

Princess Marie smiles broadly. They even have stage bands in this Right Bank! she thinks to herself.

Prince Peter smiles and dives into some of his trademark light-hearted and inconsequential talk. All the while, however, he is making plans to give the princess a memorable trip.

Meanwhile, Princess Christianna finishes the dish and politely excuses herself. Her tastes in male companions has never been clear or conventional and Sir Constantine, though hardly her normal physical type, has struck her as one of the most interesting men at the reception. Unobtrusively, she follows him away from the table where the young princes and princesses sit giggling and chatting.

Anna beams back.

"Indeed it does." says the Emperor as the newlyweds approach the Imperials. Andreus turns to David IV. "You needn't apologise for anything, Your Majesty. It is my son and I who should be apologising to you for that little outburst. My eldest son spends most of his time in his own court at New Constantinople, you see, and so when he comes back, I don't know, I suspect he feels it is his duty as an elder brother to intercede on behalf of Theodora when she misbehaves. Both he and I behaved appallingly, and I apologise to both of your Majesties."

The two newlyweds arrive.

"You tell them, Joseph." Anna prods eagerly.

James jumps to his feet and extends his hand to Zoë. “In that case, a deal is deal. Let’s go. Your Highness!”

Prince Peter smiles and dives into some of his trademark light-hearted and inconsequential talk. All the while, however, he is making plans to give the princess a memorable trip.

Oblivious to Prince Peter's scheming, Princess Marie glances over at Prince James and Princess Zoë, about to start dancing, and then turns back to Peter.

"Your Highness, it would appear that some of the members of our table are beginning to dance..." Marie hints.

"Don't beat around the bush, just ask him, Marie." says Helen as she rolls her eyes. Marie shoots a look at Helen and mouthes the words "Fermes ta bouche!", before turning back to Peter again.

"Your Highness, would you like to dance?" Princess Marie asks.

"You tell them, Joseph." Anna prods eagerly.

Joseph smiles and bows to the two Emperors. "Your Majesties, Anna and I have finally settled on a name for our new nation - Langeais." Joseph turns towards his new father-in-law. "Unfortunately, your Majesty, we will need to borrow your architect. My bride has some very splendid, but very definite ideas about a new residence and I understand your architect would be perfect for bringing them to life!"

"But I..." Zoë starts. She had planned to get James to dance with somebody else, but since he had put her on the spot, she stops herself, and takes his hand, and lets James lead her out onto the dance floor as Princesses Helen and Theodora snicker at her.

Seeing Zoë’s surprise, James scores the move as a victory and smiles. With all the exaggerated courtliness he can manage, Prince James begins moving the young princess about the dance floor.

Peter stands and bows gracefully. "Your Highness, it would be an honor." The prince extends his hand and leads Marie to the dance floor. Soon, he is dancing with style and grace, making it clear that he is familiar with more than club music.

Seeing Zoë’s surprise, James scores the move as a victory and smiles. With all the exaggerated courtliness he can manage, Prince James begins moving the young princess about the dance floor.

The princess looks a little embarrassed to be dancing with the younger Prince James as the two pass some of the young men with whom Theodora and Rebecca have arranged to dance.

Well, I was called, wasn't I? she thinks to herself as the two dance.

Peter stands and bows gracefully. "Your Highness, it would be an honor." The prince extends his hand and leads Marie to the dance floor. Soon, he is dancing with style and grace, making it clear that he is familiar with more than club music.

Princess Theodora stands and whispers to Rebecca.

"Now we have to out-do our cousins." she whispers, before introducing Rebecca to some of the waiting young nobles. After some brief formalities, another pair of princesses make their way to the dancing floor with their partners.

Princess Christianna smiles at Sir Constantine's quavering eye. "Yes, Sir Constantine, you may be of great assistance. The dance has begun and I am beginning to feel a bit like a wallflower. "Uhh..." starts Sir Constantine, taken aback. "You want to dance... with me, Your Highness?"

Sir Constantine catches Theodora dancing with a young man in the corner of his eye, and traces a line of sight back to the Emperor's disapproving gaze. He turns back to Princess Christianna with a big smile on his face.

"Your Highness, it would be an honour and a pleasure to dance with you." he says. "So I will accept your offer... on the condition that we put on such a show that we distract my lord over there from mulling over his daughter, Theodora, dancing with that spotty young count over there! Not that I need any more reason to want to dance with a beautiful, and charming princess, of course, but we really would be doing your niece and Theodora a favour... and besides, we'll have such fun doing it!"

Sir Constantine gives Christianna a mischevious smile.

Beside him she spots her own brother white as a sheet with narrow eyes following Rebecca's every move across the floor.

“Well, your lordship, it seems that your lord is not the only one who needs distracting,” Christianna whispers into Constantine’s ear. “My brother’s temper seems to run cooler than your lord’s, but his trust of young boys dancing with his daughter seems no greater.”

As the pair begin to dance, Christianna notes with satisfaction that many eyes turn to follow them. Her smile grows as Emperor David IV catches sight of her and begins staring with a slight frown. A moment later, Emperor Andreus’ gaze also finds its way to her and Constantine. She giggles, not the high giggle of a girl, but a soft, deep sound chuckle. “Our plan is working, Sir Constantine. IC:
Realising that he had arrived rather later than he intended, Tharn's entrance was less than conspicuous. "It's odd," he mused as attempted to thread his way through the throng without drawing too much attention, "how this kind of function always makes nervous - here I am, a Prince of the Drakerealms, sneaking in like a schoolboy late for class!"

He did not feel too guilty for his lateness, however. After the wedding, he had returned to the encampment to find his men throwing a celebration of their own - hardly surprising, seeing as his Wing would take any excuse to enjoy themselves, and was known among the other Wings for their occasional, yet infamous "Day-Ending-In-A-Y Parties"!

Naturally he had to stay a while, he told himself - after all, it was for the good of the Wing's morale. (And of course, he told himself, it had nothing to do with the fact that he always felt more at home among his men than among the ruling classes. The main reason his men followed him so loyally, in fact, was that he was not simply "like one of the men", but quite obviously considered himself to be more a Drakerider than a Prince).

Satisfied with his reasoning (knowing full well that it was merely an excuse), and only a little sad to have left the Encampment just as the party was getting interesting, his glance passed over the gathering, looking for anyone he recognised.

Let us now give them a show to remember!”

The Emperor Andreus arches an eyebrow as his eyes follow his champion dance with Princess Christianna. His stern expression melts away, and he almost looks amused. Sir Constantine is a little clumsy, but his lack of coordination is almost made up for by his enthusiasm, and most onlookers are watching the Excalbian Princess anyway.

"I had no idea Constantine could dance." says the Emperor, more to himself than to anybody in particular. He is so distracted that he doesn't notice Prince Tharn's entrance. Inconspicuous as it is, the entrance or exit of a courtier is almost never missed by the Emperor, who remembers the names and faces of everybody who visits his court - an ability absolutely essential to the ruler of such a massive empire. Despite these impressive powers of observation, so perculiar is the sight of Sir Constantine dancing, and of course, Princess Christianna would stand out in any crowd.

Princess Theodora, however, doesn't miss Tharn's entry. Looking over the shoulder of the spotty-faced young courtier tripping over her feet, she scans the crowd of young gentlemen to pick one with whom she'd like to dance next - none is a particularly appealing choice. When the striking figure of the Drakerider slinks through the crowd, Theodora notices it immediately. At the end of the dance, she briefly thanks her dance partner, and directs the next young man who steps forward in the direction of Princess Rebecca.

"I'll be right back, I've just seen somebody!" she whispers excitedly to the Excalbian before rushing after Tharn.

"Your Highness!" she calls out to him to get his attention.

“Thank you, your Majesty,” Joseph says with a bow. Then, seeing the dance floor fill up with guests, he adds, “With your permission, your Majesties.” He turns to Anna. “May I have this dance, my Bride?”

Anna beams, and offers her hand to Joseph, who takes it and leads his bride onto the dance floor. "I'll be right back, I've just seen somebody!" she whispers excitedly to the Excalbian before rushing after Tharn.

Princess Rebecca watches Theodora dash across the garden and smiles. Must be ‘somebody’ serious! She then turns and curtseys to the young man Theodora had pushed her way, takes his hand and joins the dance.

Anna beams, and offers her hand to Joseph, who takes it and leads his bride onto the dance floor. The assembled guests applaud, and clear space for the couple as the orchestra on the balcony behind the imperial table begin to play. Anna has never looked quite so happy nor so beautiful as she does as she and Joseph start to dance.

David IV shakes his head as he watches his sister prance about the dance floor with Andreus’ less-than-graceful champion. His grim expression slowly lightens. Then he turns and sees his son and Anna on the dance floor. His heart finally melts and he smiles. The Emperor turns to Empress Elizabeth. “They make a nice couple, don’t they, my Love?”

“Yes they do, David.” The Empress beams as she takes her husband’s arm. “Once upon a time, people said the same thing about us when we were on the dance floor…”

“Oh, they did, did they? Do you suppose they still would?” The Emperor smiles. “May I have this dance?”

“Yes, you may.”

The Emperor turns to his host and bows. “Would you excuse us for a moment, your Majesty?”

* * *

Some 15 minutes later, Emperor David and Empress Elizabeth return to the table and take their seats.

“A wonderful celebration, your Majesty,” David says to Andreus.

As he is about to say something else, a member of the Imperial Guard approaches and hands the Emperor a note. The Emperor’s face grows pale as he quickly hands the note to his wife. “Your Majesty, I am afraid there has just been an incident back home. A member of Upper Virginia’s ruling council has been assassinated and my Government believes a full-scale coup d’etat maybe underway. We have long feared that the violence in our northern neighbor may affect our border regions. Nothing has happened yet, however, I feel I must return to Excalbia.” David looks at his wife and sighs. “As soon as the reception is concluded, of course. The Empress and the rest of the Imperial family, with your agreement, will remain to complete the rest of our scheduled visit. I am very sorry for the intrusion of such events on such a lovely day.”

The Emperor spots Anna and Joseph out of the corner of his eye as they continue their dance. “Also, I wish to assure you that the territory I granted to Anna and Joseph for their new domain is well removed from Upper Virginia and should be unaffected by the troubles there. Also, Excalbia will certainly defend Langeais as if it were her own territory.”

Seeing the Princess heading towards him, Tharn's expression of mild concern disappears as he forward to meet her. "Hello again, your Highness" he greets her with a smile. "I hope my absence was not too greatly missed - there were certain... matters I had to attend to back at my camp." (He certainly did not intend to let on that he'd missed the first course to attend the start of his Wingmen's own celebration!)

Then, with a grin, he adds "And when did we go back to being "Your Highness," Your Highness? Whenever someone calls me that, I always feel as if I'm on state business. How about we go back to being Tharn and Theodora again?" He winks, and adds in a mock-conspiratorial fashion, "I won't tell if you wont!"

"I didn't want to shout out Tharn for all the court to hear!" says Theodora, playfully. "They're dreadful gossips. Besides, you are on state business, I'm making a formal request to your government that you agree to dance with a nominated representative of the Imperial Government. And sir, I have the pleasure to be that nominated representative!"

The Emperor Andreus considers his Excalbian counterpart's words.

"Of course, Your Majesty's duties must lie with Excalbia. You have my personal assurance that Her Majesty and the rest of your party will be not only safe, but will enjoy every comfort Pantocratoria has to offer while they remain here." says the Emperor. "I will instruct the Imperial High Command to place the Pantocratorian assets in and around the Excalbian Isles on high alert - please consider Lord Phocas and his fleet at Excalbia's disposal."

"Thank you, your Majesty. As soon as this evening's feast is concluded, then, I shall take my leave and return to Excalbia. I will look forward to seeing you and your family there in the near future."

Tharn laughed, replying "Well, if only all state business could be as enjoyable!" Taking her hand, he added in a mock-formal tone "I am honoured to grant your request, Representative." Then, in a more normal tone - "Might I have this dance, Your Highness? Unless, of course, it is already spoken for by some other gentleman..."

OOC: DAMN THESE FORUMS! I thought I had replied to Wyrmberg days ago!

"Who cares what the other gentlemen have and haven't spoken for." Theodora replies, taking Tharn's hand. "Maybe after this dance we could go for a stroll in the gardens..."

Theodora indicates the formal gardens in which Prince Andreus and his favourite were walking earlier that night, complete with a champagne fountain, although the children dressed as cherubs have long since fallen asleep amongst the flower beds and lawns.

OOC: Hey, many apologies for the Über-delay in posting, but exams kinda took precedence for a bit. Should've said something. Anyways, back to the story:

IC:
Tharn smiles as he and the princess make their way to the dancefloor. "Yes, I'd like that - it'd be good to get away from all the ceremony for a bit." His smile becomes a grin for a second as he realises that, despite having just arrived, he's already looking for a way to escape. Although, to be honest, the fact that it'd mean spending time alone with Theodora is probably more to the point...

A thought dawns on him, and he asks Theodora (half-jokingly) "You don't think we ought to find a chaperone, do you? I mean, I remember what happened the last time we were 'alone' together - as alone as you can be in a tent full of Riders and Drakes, that is..."

Theodora looks a little sullen, and bites her lower-lip. She knew very well that her father wouldn't have made such a big fuss about Anna or Zoë going unchaperoned, and remembering the humiliating dressing down she had received embarassed her.

"I suppose that... would be a good idea." Theodora sighs. She looks around for Sir Constantine, but sees that he is still dancing with Princess Christianna. She shakes her head, looking a little bemused, and so starts looking for one of her brothers, her eyes finally settling on Prince Constantine.

"I'll ask my brother." she tells Tharn, before scampering off to Prince Constantine's table. She finds her brother on a cellular phone, his forehead in his hand.

"Constantine," she says in a tone which Constantine knows well. "I was wondering..."

"What do you want?" Constantine asks, covering his phone's mouthpiece.

"I'd like to go for a stroll with a young gentleman and I was wondering whether you could chaperone me?" Theodora asks.

"Just a moment, Jean." Constantine says into his phone, before covering the mouthpiece again. "Chaperone you?"

"Well after all that fuss when all I did was go to see Tharn's camp..." Theodora says.

"I'm busy..." Constantine protests weakly.

"But you're hardly involved in the party. You could come along and talk on your phone as easily in the garden as you could here..." Theodora suggests.

"Fine... fine..." Constantine says, conceding defeat. He resumes his conversation as he follows after Theodora back to the waiting Tharn.

"He'll stay on his phone and not cause us any bother." Theodora murmurs to Tharn as she takes his arm. The three enter the formal garden, passing sleeping cherubs, the champagne fountain, and a couple of young courtiers who are so far along in their romantic activities that it appears that they will soon retire for the evening. As the sound of the dancing and the orchestra fade into the background, Constantine starts lagging behind Tharn and Theodora, giving them a little privacy as he continues his phone conversation.
