So waitaminit now-- does that mean to play in the next World Cup we'll have to learn to speak Roman? What kind of stupid idea is that? We're only playing if we can do it in good old Gilmeecian, the same language everybody's used for all the previous Cups.

So lemme get this straight. If we wanna play in World Cup 10, we gotta learn Roman and 'Latin?' This is gettin' freakin' crazy. We've gotta protest this.

Point one: Rome was conquered by Italy, like, five hundred years ago. Nobody even speaks Roman anymore. I mean, if the Cup's gonna take place in Italy and we have to learn Eye-talian, that's one thing. We ain't gonna like it, but we'll make do. But Roman? Come on, even the Romans don't speak Roman no more.

Point two: nobody talks Latin but the Papists. And I know they ain't hosting the Cup. So what's up with expectin' us to learn Latin?

Point three: what the hell do we have to go learnin' foreign languages for, anyway? Just tell me what's so wrong with good old-fashioned Gilmeecian, anyway? I mean, it's the Universal Language, for one thing.

Point four: any language that uses the letter X to mean ten is a stupid language and we don't wanna learn it. So screw the Romans and the Latins. We don't need 'em.

Point five: we'd appreciate the WCC gettin' back to us to let us know if we're gonna have to learn foreign lanuagues if we wanna participate in the next World Cup.

Thanks.

The above are the rankings after WC3 using the Elo Rating system ( http://www.eloratings.net/system.html ). Since there were no ratings before this, I gave all teams an initial rating of 1000, and 1100 if they were autoqualifiers into this cup. I'm still working out a nice way of doing this so that we can get rankings up to now, and you have to remember that these rankings aren't perfect, because none of the teams had played more than about 10 games.... But comments would be good :)

Well, as long as you work out the disadvantage hosting, and the pre-World Cup 7 byes that were granded to top ten teams (so those games that weren't played are made up) go ahead and redo all the rankings.

Seeing the WCC take so long to decide, I propose we elect a leader. Back in WC3 I tried a lot of ideas, since then not a lot has changed, we just seem to wander aimlessly.

Here is what I thought was best, all members of the WCC that want this position say so in this thread, then all non-WCC teams that are on the known list get to vote which one of them they think should be the leader.

TnUI - the leader election sounds good to me!

Spaam - I think the new ranking system idea is a good one (although i've looked through that web site a couple of times and still amn't really sure how its all going to be done!)
As Olgy said - the main problem will probably be the auto-qualifier disadvantage, though I remember a few years back in RL that the Czech Rep. was ranked n.1 in the world without ever really coming close to winning anything, because of other countries gaining automatic places, so maybe it's just going to be a disadvantage of hosting. (also you get more points for winning in the cup itself - in the long run it shouldn't be too much of an issue)
The only other issue that worries me is how much weighting will be given to the ranks when the scores are generated, as it may start to put newbies off joining. (although - on the up side it would stop things like TnUI slipping to 49 or whatever while some unknown nation that doesn't RP ends up in the q-finals!!)

Basically - i'd go with it!!

Sounds good to me.

Of the WCC nations, TnUI is the most active (aside from me, but we'll talk about that later) and almost always does rankings and signups, etc. etc.

So it only makes sense for him to wield the majority of the power.

Jactazea qualified for WC9, shouldn't they have a rank under 32 for WC10?

TnUI, no objection to the "leader" idea, since the WCC is getting unwieldy. But you're big on co-hosts, how do you feel about co-leaders (in case the leader's fiance is in town, say? -- insert tongue in cheek emoticon here).

Also World Cup 9 hasn't started yet TB ;) He didn't signup for World Cup 9 and so falls behind the 77 who did.

A President and Vice-President might work. It does in America...supposedly.

How about "First among equals" and "Vice-First among equals"?

Or: "Queen" and "Prime Minister" (the Prime Minister would really run things, but we'd all just love the Queen to death)

Or: "General" and "Sergeant"

Or: "Governor" and "Governed"

I wanna run for Governed.... No, not really.

Which brings up an interesting question, how many regulars are women...all I know about is DO.

Actually, I've recently been thinking maybe we should have a Charter for the WCC, because, as we all seem to agree, it's getting unwieldy. A Charter would set down rules of governance, membership, and authority, and could give some procedures re: the running of the Cup.

I'd like to suggest that whoever is elected Leader and Sub-Leader (Leader-helper? Little Leader? MiniLeader?) draft a Charter for us. Or delegate the responsibility to someone else.

Finally, we ought to have one or two more candidates, so how about if I nominate Ariddia? Or is it gonna be self-nominations only?

23-10-2003, 02:27
Well, since we're going full-on debate concerning the leaning-and-learching-WCC...

Point #1) My title suggestions are either "Premier" or "Director." The cohort- erm, I mean sub-guy should be called...well, I have no suggestions for that position.

Point #2) I agree with Lemmy. A charter is in order.

Point #3) For the hell of it, let's go with nominating others, and self-nominations. Shows you what the WCC members themselves think, and what the others think about it.

And ain't I a woman?

Runaway Moose certainly has some popular ladies. Very busy with international affairs. BTW, Niffiner Moosekopf has offered the Alces Rex official home stadium, The Antlerodome, to Nif and Cannon for their wedding. Though she wants to discuss it with Cannon first of course, Nif wants to invite all the squads who played in WC7 and WC8, to celebrate their love and the sport that brought them together. Rather than the traditional reception, she would going to have internationally mixed friendlies (breaking up those squads, pitting brother against brother, but emphasis on friendly) and a big BBQ (vegetarian option available.) Naturally, she and Cannon have to discuss this option first, but she's hopeful. Any takers?

ooc: I think that far more interesting than gender would be what country people are from (non nation states country that is.)

By just sayin' "hey, I sign up!"

Then when we start World Cup 10 (which is in a few weeks as World Cup 9 is just beginning) you will be either A) telegrammed the results of your games or B) have them posted publicly and you will "roleplay" the results of the game.

Most people do news articles on the outcome of the game; who scored [duh] and anything else like yellow cards or important events.

Some people do TV recaps or live TV telicasts.

Search for "World Cup 9 Roster thread" to take a look at some of the rosters people have put together. Rosters are encouraged, if you plan on RPing a lot.

I encourage you to RP, since most of the "WC regulars" look down on non-RPing World Cup participants.

If we had real FIFA regions, i'd prefer we stay away from using real continent names -- IMO it's best we have a fictional continent and not be restricted by that of a real one.

1) Most of us have countries in the 500-600 million range, which would quickly fill up a "America" FIFA region.

2) Real life landgrabs suck.

I think we should have 'Divisions' And the more expierenced teams are placed in a higher division and so on and so forth. Then, as FIFA does, we should make a specific number of slots available for WC entry for each Division. This would prevent an overflow of top-ranked teams getting all the glory, and allow for smaller/ less expierenced countries to gain ground. i.e Senegal, Turkey...

OOC: I'll be continuing to use the traditional ranking system for WC9. Partly because I don't even pretend to understand how FIFA rankings work.

Also, implementing that system would seem to make it very difficult for new teams to actually get anywhere. As it is, you see definite improvement after even one Cup... with this, you might need three or so before you get much above 150. That's about three months of real time. That's a lot to ask.

It's true that the rankings based on most recent Cup only can lead to some big jumps or falls, but I think that suits the character of NationStates as a whole -- everything's exaggerated here. Plus, it's about a hundred times simpler to figure out.

Actually, Ravenspire has a good point.

I'm a provisional 169th in those rankings, yet I enter WC9 ranked 59th. Ravenspire keeping the old rankings is the next best thing to us co-hosting and hence qualifying automatically

Could Spaam please explain this ranking system? I'm ranked differently in the world than in the top ten... is this the new system, or just for kicks?

Regions would be fun. I don't think we need to worry about new teams not getting a shot. I think it causes more commotion when teams who have been around forever and always RP'ed get booted out early.
25-10-2003, 00:49
Well, Moose, I must say I prefer it when it doesn't happen, because I'm one of those nations that's been around since World Cup 4. I don't want to be booted out early. I'd like it even more if I could actually win this time, but that might be too much to hope for.

No...

The growth of the WC has brought a bunch of nations that don't RP any of their games, even worse when they push out more active RPing nations -- you were fairly inactive, but being away from your computer is a different matter entirely than not RPing at all.

Ok, Oglethorpia/Bedistan.... I need you to record all the scores in a spreadsheet for the archive. The template is here: http://nswcc.tripod.com/archive/WCVII.xls

Eep...that Excel file apparently has some formulas my spreadsheet program doesn't like...I'll see if I can figure it out though.

As much as I hate to throw all the work on you, Ogle, my spreadsheet program simply will not work with this file. I'm afraid I won't be able to contribute here... :?

I just took out Brazillico.... since he's not playing anymore.
I'll do the list again, only with current teams....
Oh, and I haven't added WC8 games yet.
Also, I might change it a bit to only use integers.... mebbe.... the real number would be a pain....

As for regions, we should probably work out how many regions we'd want, and then people can nominate which region they want to be in. With the caveat of course that teams that are in a reallife region must be int eh same region. For instance, the Heartland teams would have to stay together, which are Spaam, LE, Dennisov, Gesamtkuntswerk, Oddslavo, East Spaam, and some others.... Same with the FIFA teams.

What if you have to put Brazillico back in? Also region idea, don't like it.

Then he gets his old ranking back? Or maybe I keep old nations, but they lose 100 points for each WC they miss....
Please note that if you have a low ranking, its easier for you to improve it, and harder for you to go the other way. LIkewise for high rankings.... harder for you to improve it, easier for you to go the other way.

And why don't you like it mister? :P

i like the regions idea, but only if there was a regional tournament between world cups like irl with the European championships etc :)

Itd help fuck up the rankings like irl as well, because we'd have to pretend that each region was as competitive as the next one like FIFA seem to do, hence why Mexico and Columbia always seem to be in the top 10 even tho they both suck :))

having 5-10 'regions' with teams being allocated a certain region. you wouldnt have to move your country anywhere, itd just be something that might make qualifying a bit easier.

It might be an idea to sort the regions in terms of their political alleigance. i.e. extreme left, extreme right, left, right, and centre.

or whatever :)

That does not sound bad. Will you use the UN-classifications for sorting?

I like the idea of regions sorted by political allegiance... but it could possibly distort the rankings. And heaven forbid, it might cause some nations to make wild political swings to get in an easier group...

How do you know what I sit around all day looking at? Have you haxxored into my computer?

Arright, I just made a YIM account. I shall TG it to TnUI and am happy to share it with any other interested parties. I haven't downloaded the software yet, tho.

Guess that means I'm making a bid to be sub-leader of WCC.

I think regional allocation for football based off political alleigiance is'nt the best thing. We should stick with 10-15 regions based off WC expiereince. groups with more expierenced teams should have more spots reserved for them in the WC final and so on and so forth down the line. Like how FIFA awards more spots to more football predominant regions like UEFA and CONEMBOL

I think a good way of doing qualifying to give smaller teams a chance without being too distorting is this:

Groups of six, but playing each other once. Let's say 14 of them (84 teams).

Winners go through automatically (13 teams)

Second and third - 28 teams - go into seven groups of four, playing each other twice. Three of the nine lowest-ranked sides among these 28 are placed in each of three of these seven groups. Top two teams in each group, plus two best third-placed teams, go through.

Edit: TnuI, you should have a telegram from me.

Sounds like it would take inordinately long, KP. How many matches is that? I lost count.

EDIT: 11, I guess. That's doable. But I'm not quite sure how it would benefit the low/unranked teams.

If I'm reading that right, it looks like 11 days of matches.

But the real question is: what's wrong with the way it was done in WCs 7 and 8? Nice and simple, with no complex rules to remember, and everyone with the same chance (ranking and previous performance aside).

Yeah, tbh I do like 15 groups, top 2 go through. Plus it allows everyone home and away matches, which is fun for RPing.

The lower-ranked sides who get into the second group phases are given an advantage, because they are given an easier second-phase draw.

We humbly offer our services as a co-host for your WC11 bid. Our state of the art national stadium, The As Yet Unnamed Stadium at Mount Doom, is nearing completion and will be ready for WC9. We should have several more new stadia completed in time for WC11. And, we may have an indirect link to your nation: our Team Psychiatrist Skaialuk the Insane claims Insane heritage, though it may just be more of his innane babblings.

If you've already chosen a co-host, fair enough, we hereby offer a parternship to any other nation willing/seeking a co-host partner. Yours,
