Maelstrom announces retirement
Mickelson to return

Lemmington

Following the Lemmings' second-round elimination from World Cup 8 at the hands of Timway, national darling Lana Maelstrom has announced her retirement from international play. "I'll stick around the league a couple more season, 'til me current contract runs out, but I'm gettin' too old for this game," said the two-time team captain. "Me knees ain't wot they used t'be, an' the last thing I'd want is a bad case of KJB."

Speculation has already begun that Maelstrom may return as a Coach with the World Cup 9 squad; though rumors have also surfaced of a future for the outspoken midfielder in broadcasting. Though some have suggested that her virulent Lowlands accent might be a detriment to such a career, others have pointed out that the late, lamented Gil Lemson, previous Dean of Lemmitanian sports, never rid himself of a similar accent, and was quite successful despite it.

In other team news, Mick Mickelson has been retained once again to coach the Lemmings in their world title bid; though a poor game in the second round saw a quick exit for the squad in 8, Mickelson's talents were highlighted by a 9-win run through the qualifiers, the best record of any team this Cup.

I propose that the WCC meet sometime soon to decide the host of WC 9.

OMG, TBF hafd a good idea! The world is ending, the world is ending!!!

Since 8 is going smoothly, I vote Bed and Ogle for 9. 8)

Joe Lally of Fugazi is a good start

Dude, you gave away who Joe Lally is. Now you'll have to be killed.

Eh, even now I bet his identity is still a mystery, even with the band whom he owes allegiance to being revealed an'all.

Uh, I think we should wait till WC 8 begins drawing near to it's end before we start looking at the first double-digit WC.

I believe standard protocol is that when one WC starts, the signups for the next start at the same time. So look for the start of WC9 (which should be about a week from now) -- that's about when WC10 signups will begin.

Hey, i just organized a whole pity party tournament. I'm just sorry i closed the entries before you replied to the invitation! (Actually it was pretty good, some virtuoso role-playing by Warnocks Wizards, Nikea and a few others. And it was a good chance to test a RP bonus system -- will report back on that later.)

However, very happy to join you for a pity party. I'll bring the tea and crumpets.

Currently, the final looks like this:
Liverpool England (beat Haraki 2-1 on pens 1-1 AET) vs. Bedistan or Europa Brittania

If the three-way bid gets selected, it will be the

-First ever three way hosting in the Cup
-First cup to be hosted by a previous-cup Final-ist
-Last cup with a single digit (in any case)
Bedistan
18-10-2003, 01:07
Similarly, if Bedistan defeated Europa Brittania, they will become the only host to reach the finals of their own Cup. Did they make it? Find out later, in the WC8 thread. :P

BTW if that happens Ogle will make the score right? I hope I draw you.... I've had plenty of luck against higher-ranked teams

(Errinundera, WC8 Rd1; Squornshelous, Rd 1; Ariddia, Rd1; The Belmore Family, Rd of 16; Runaway Moose, QF; Haraki SF.)

Yes. Throughout this Cup, Ogle has generated all results for my matches and I have generated his. Originally we were going to get a third party to do both, but that took too long and we wanted to get started. ;)

76 have signed up. If it is the 3-way-bid that makes it, we would need 78, a dual-bid, 77.

Wrong way round. The co-hosts are included among the 76. Therefore we'd need 73 qualifying spots if KP/LE/BF win and 74 otherwise.

In which case, I propose the champions of WC8 qualify by right for WC9 if the 3-way bid wins, leaving 72 teams to qualify. A straightforward system of twelve groups of six can then operate, with the top two qualifying, and the top eight third-placed sides entering the playoffs for the remaining four places.

1. I meant no. of teams including the hosts.
2. What if I win World Cup 8?

we used to allow up to the hosts and chamipons and next few ranked nations to quto-qualify, but that was scraped later and so now, only hosts qualify.

i dun think champions should auto-qualify, if they are truly champions and the score generator gods are favourable towards you, the champion would have no problem qualifying. AND it also cleards up how many qualifying teams there should be. right now we have so many problems determining how many nations can join and whether we should have 2 or 3 hosts.

also, btw, the forums are not mad/crazy, i did have a post under one blue dot, but then i changed it to ORD.

It is in line with the real world... Brazil will have to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, the first holders to do so. (Ironically enough, this meant Germany, as hosts, would auto-qualify and Brazil would not regardless of the result.)

Tradition is worth sticking to... ;) was just trying to suggest a useful way of getting round the problem of 73 being a prime number...

right now, there are 76 teams signed up. that makes either 74 (2 hosts) or 73 (3 hosts) teams playing in qualifiers. i suggest:

if 2 hosts:
15G*5=75. top 2/grp = 30. 30+2 hosts=32. (total 77)

OR

if 3 hosts, with one of the following:
15G*5=75. qualifier grp champ + top 14 of 2nd-placers = 29. 29+3 hosts=32. (total 78)
16G*5=80. qualifier grp champ + top 13 of 2nd-placers = 29. 29+3 hosts=32. (total 83)

ORD's 20G*4 might work, but I fear it might be too short.

More radical proposal: Based on presence of 77 teams, minus three co-hosts=74. 6G*9, 2G*10. Playing each other once, not twice, to save time. Top three + fourth-placed sides from groups of 10 + winners of playoffs between other fourth-placed sides = 24+2+3=29+3 hosts=32.

National Football Club Scrambles to Find New Players for World Cup 9
February 17, 2015

In a press release today, the Bedistan Department of Sports and Games announced that a record twelve members of the national football club, the Lions, would be retiring after World Cup 8.

"We've made it to the finals," said forward Jeff Whitehurst when questioned about his decision. "I know I'm not likely to experience that again, and a lot of us others probably won't either. And besides, I'm 36. I'd be 40 going into the next cup, and I don't think I can handle it. Time to give some fresh blood a chance."

The following is a list of all the retiring players:

Defenders
18 - Richard Weiss (starter, on team since WC5, age 35)
19 - Laura Johnson (starter, on team since WC5, age 32)
27 - Mary Nelson (starter, on team since WC7, age 26)
33 - Terry Sargent (backup, on team since WC8, age 25)

Midfielders
1 - Ken Sierra (starter, on team since WC5, age 31)
15 - Sally Myers (starter, on team since WC5, age 34)

Forwards
8 - Johnny Lewis (starter, captain, on team since WC5, age 34)
12 - Becky Taft (backup, on team since WC5, age 31)
16 - Jeff Whitehurst (starter, on team since WC5, age 36)
24 - Adam Eckerley (backup, on team since WC6, age 31)
35 - Sonya Tibbetts (backup, on team since WC8, age 29)

Goalkeepers
23 - Olivia Bream (starter, all-Cup team in WC7, on team since WC5, age 33)

Only one starting defender will be staying for WC9 -- Mike Thomas, age 34, the only player to have participated in every single international match since the Bedistani team's inception. WC8 backups Diego Sanchez, Alan Greene, and Tabitha Morgan will likely be on the starting lineup as well.

The midfield retains two of its four starters, and Lisa Young is expected to be brought back up from the bench again. She was a starter in WC5, dropped to the bench in WC6, started in WC7, and was returned to the bench in WC8. Now it looks like she will start once again. WC8 backup Luis Bean of the Graceville Salamanders is likely to be made a starter this time.

Every last one of the team's forwards is retiring -- starters and backups. Therefore, the team will have all new players playing at the front.

Olivia Bream has served as the team's primary goalkeeper from the very beginning, allowing 47 goals in 49 matches as of this writing. She will be replaced by the man who has served as her backup all this time -- Chuck Mitchell, a good keeper in his own right.

Since Johnny Lewis will be leaving the team, the Lions will need a new captain once again. It is expected that veteran of 55 matches Mike Thomas will fill this role.

And to top it all off, team coach Jim Parker is also retiring after the match against Liverpool England. "I've brought the team from nothing to one of the three best in the world. There's nothing more I can do," he says. Rumor has it that former captain and all-Cup player in World Cup 7 Gene Barber may return to be the team's coach.

We will provide all the latest information as this story develops.

BTW, Nikea recently proposed a new ranking system that I think might have some merit. I don't really think it got enough exposure in the WC8 thread, but what little response there was seems to have been positive. I'll repost it here:

I have a preliminary proposal for a new ranking system. This is all preliminary and can be revised or scrapped depending on response.

I came up with this yesterday, after recalling some World Cup facts. France was ranked tops in the world, yet didn't qualify for the round of 16 in World Cup 2002. Yet they are still ranked number 1 in the world. The Netherlands didn't even make it to Japan and Korea, yet are still number 9. In contrast, as an example, Quahog was ranked number 1 going into World Cup 7; starting in World Cup 8 he was 26th. This 25 rank jump is a bit unrealistic to me. As it stands, any nation that performs significantly well over a long period of time, getting consistent results, can be overtaken for an NS 4 year period by a newcomer team that just bursts onto the scene, and has one good cup.

I am suggesting a points system. This might be hard to implement now, due to the established ranking system already. However, I think it is possible with a bit of calculating, etc. I have come up with a point value system for increasing points:

3 points are added for a win
2 points are added for a draw
1 point is added for a loss
1 point is received per game played
GD is added/subtracted to the point total
Finally, following each world cup, a point total could be added equal to:

(total number of teams [including qualifying]) - (final position + current rank))

For example, say there are 80 teams in qualifying. Timway (using him since he has the last post I saw, first name to come to mind) finishes 4th, lets say. And there are (15*6) + 2 = 92 teams participating. So he would have (92) - (4+31) = 57 points added to his total, plus all the other modifiers (right now, 14 for games played, I don't know the other numbers)

I think that this idea needs major work, but I have a small qualm with the final position = rank system we have now. Consistent, long standing teams should be rewarded for being consistent and being around for awhile.

Any suggestions/comments?

I like the idea myself...

KP, LE, TBF's decision on Qualification

The Belmore Family, Kaze Progressa and Liverpool England Qualify automatically.

Another 78 nations sign up (81 including the 3 (possible) hosts)

They go into 13 groups consisting of 6 teams

The Group Champion qualifies automatically (13 teams)

The person placed 2nd in the group qualifies automatically (13 teams)

The top 6 remaining teams (determined by Points, then Goal Difference, then Goals Scored and then Wins) go into a 2 legged play-off (One home, one away) and the winner on aggregate goes through to the Finals.

As a preview, here's what the Nikean Ranking System would look like for the 32 teams that qualified for WC8 (counting only WC8 results):

1. Runaway Moose (141)

4. Svecia (132)
5. Errinundera (124)
5. Halfassedstates (124)
5. Lemmitania (124)
8. The Belmore Family (122)
8. Busby (122)
10. Timway (120)
11. Giant Zucchini (117)
12. Oddslavo (116)
13. Ariddia (115)
13. Ravenspire (115)
15. Snub Nose 38 (114)
*15. Bedistan (114)
17. Spaam (113)
*17. Europa Britannia (113)
19. Squornshelous (110)
20. Dennisov (107)
20. Audioslavia (107)
22. One Red Dot (90)
23. Kingsford (86)
24. The Lowland Clans (82)
25. Oglethorpia (75)
26. Gesamtkuntswerk (73)
27. Gilmeecia (72)
28. Commerce Heights (62)
29. Antaeus Rising (57)
30. Bullonien (56)
31. Demonic Beings (53)
32. Jacktazea (49)

* = subject to change

One thing I see right off the bat (especially looking from my perspective ;)) is that teams that didn't go through qualifying (i.e. hosts) are deprived of a lot of points. For instance, I'm tied for 15th under this system while I'm currently 2nd in the current system. Oglethorpia is 25th here, but 10th under the existing method.

That doesn't make sense. Your team shouldn't magically get better or worse as the finals begin.

That's happening because as auto-qualifiers, we didn't play as many matches. Thus: fewer points from total matches, fewer wins, fewer draws, and fewer losses. If the hosts of a Cup were given some sort of point compensation, this could be worthwhile... :S

That's happening because as auto-qualifiers, we didn't play as many matches. Thus: fewer points from total matches, fewer wins, fewer draws, and fewer losses. If the hosts of a Cup were given some sort of point compensation, this could be worthwhile... :S

Yeah, maybe like use the WC7 qualifying for points or something.

I read what you wrote concerning the matter, don't worry 8)

Well, in practice, I think all previous Cups would be used, so it might not be so bad in the long run. I just did this as an example.

Any news from the WCC? And OOI, who are the members of it?

Edit: points-per-game, multiplied by the number of World Cups, might make sense.

But the most realistic (and awkward) solution of all would be a system where the rank of the opposition is implemented, like the real FIFA rankings. So for instance, Endray Island would gain quite a few places for their defeat of Errinundera in WC8 qualifying. However this would be *very* time-consuming to do. Maybe it could just be dated back to the last two or three World Cups? (This mimics the nature of the FIFA rankings.)

Well, we've probably got a vote from the Lemmings, for us allowing them a stroll in the qualifying. And we've probably lost a vote from Ariddia, because we got a draw against them in their own stadium.

Seriously... those guys will make a good choice. (Let it be us... :D)

I think a meeting is almost impossible to arrange. Generally people send their votes to Ariddia who tallies them and announces when a majority decision is made. I suggest everyone on the WCC who hasn't done so already, telegram Ariddia and cc. the others.

For my ranking idea with as far as the hosts go, in my opinion, hosting shouldn't equate to an automatic top 32 spot. While a lot of work goes into the hosting, it seems like teams who are always just outside the bubble can be jumped over.

For example, if Kaze Progressa wins the hosting bid (no offence to you), he'd jump from ~82 to a top 32 spot. That's a 50 rank jump just by being a host. While hosts do a lot of work, it shouldn't necessarily equate to a top ranking.

Also, the point system might mean that some teams who didn't qualify but still did rather well (eg. If Nation A has 18 points but his two group representatives had 20 and 21 points, while Nation B had 14 points and qualified) would still be rewarded. Ranks shouldn't be based on how easy or difficult your group was either.

Nikea: I agree, I don't deserve to jump 50 places just for helping out LE and BF :D

'Ranks shouldn't be based on how easy or difficult your group was either' <<< hence the system of more points for victories vs better teams. Kaze Progressa beating Ariddia would earn more points than Ariddia beating Kaze Progressa. And if, as happened in WC8 qualifying, the two sides drew, KP would gain more points, because it was a better result for them then for Ariddia, if you get my drift, because Ariddia were expected to destroy KP.

But I don't know quite how this would work...

Kaze: It was just a preliminary system, I still have lots of variables to work out before I make a final proposal, in which would be further taken apart by TnUI and the WCC :p

Something based on rank of opposing team might work. And I'm still debating the idea of negative point values, but I might just nix that idea.

I thought I signed up already, but I don't see my name on the list at the front of this post. I signed up before I saw that all this extra stuff was needed to join this World Cup, but I had hoped it wouldn't matter. What would a World Cup be without Svecia? We've participated in every WC except for the first one and have won the third place match twice and only failed to qualify for the group stage, um, never? Hopefully this tournament hasn't already filled up without me because I wouldn't want to miss it. Right now I see we're ranked 16th but hopefully a tournament could make up for it. I don't think we've ever been ranked worse than 22nd.

Today, we're going to review the logo for Kaze Progressa, The Belmore Family, and Liverpool England, or as Lee likes to call it, 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.'"

"That's no ordinary logo, that's some crazy eye burning logo!"

"John?"

"I mean, Lee, if you woke up with a big football inside your eye, what would you do?"

"John..."

"I'd probably yell "AAH! THERE'S A FOOTBALL! IN MY EYE! A FOOTBALL!"

"Not so fast my friend, back to the play by play."

"Sorry, I got excited."

"I know."

"Now, to the right of that big nine, it seems like someone has stuck a big Liverpool England Flag. Hey, how'd that penguin get in here?"

"What penguin?"

"Why, that penguin is huge! It's like the size of a person!"

"John, are you ok?"

"I'm gonna get that penguin for ruining a good commentary on FOOTBALL!"

Correct me if I'm wrong, folks, but that's just a ranking list for people who've been in the WC before. Clearwater, as this is your first outing, you have no preestablished record, ergo, you can't be fairly categorized versus your peers.

Look Who's Back On The Street !
Sten, Snub Nose 38 Remington Grey

Noticed making the club rounds in Sten last night were Ben and Eileen Dover, past manager and defensive coach of the Snub Nose 38 Hooligans for World Cups 3 through 7. During World Cup 8 they served as consultants to a new management team. It seems the Ministry of Justice and Real Estate has released them from confinement on Elba. We understand they are on probation, and must report to their parole officer every week. A source who would give her name only as "Margaret" led this reporter to believe that their release was requested by the Ministry of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages. We couldn't help but notice that Ben and Eileen were not accompanied by Justin Case, Peeko Von Dropov, or Morris Better - the management team for the Hooligans during World Cup 8.

The Minister of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages today released the names of the new managment team that will take the Snub Nose 38 International Football side, the Hooligans, through qualifications for World Cup 9. Sal Manela is the sides new manager. Sal previously managed Remington United in the SNFA League. He will be assisted by Offensive Coach Sally Forth, who comes with Sal from Remington United, and Defensive Coach Ivan Tabytcha, whose contract as manager of the SNFA League Enfield Rifles recently expired . Sal Manela's first move as Manager was to add Ben and Eileen Dover to the managment team as consultants.

Kaze Progressa was a deathly quiet place today, as the populace are resigned to the fact Ravenspire and Europa Brittanica are probably WC9 hosts.

The K200 index of leading shares fell 2.3% as traders sold off companies with an international bias - the KPSE's biggest company, Progressair, saw its shares fall over 4.5%.

Just a thought-- How 'bout if we vote on the WC10 hosts one week into WC9, whenever it starts. I'd even go do far as to propse that we select the WC10 and WC11 hosts at the same time.

What do others think of that?

I did think this was a good idea when I first saw it, what was it, a couple of months ago? Anyway, what if the people we decide on do an S&K on us. Best to wait I think. Anyway when I take over the World...I mean the World Cup Committee Leadership, I hope to implement changes that mean if the hosts disappear the tournament will be unaffected. Also I'm gonna bid for World Cup 11.

I am here. And in the event that we are not chosen for WC9 host we would like to co host with Runaway Moose.

Hmm...

Could Aquilla and TBF be one and the same? I wouldn't have credited it. Aquilla baby, say it ain't so!

Can The People's Republic of CallMeBernard make a plea for a late entry for the World Cup?

As a member of the Continent of Crystal Palace, inoffensive democracy or not, there is a certain feeling of unresolved business with Mr Warnock.

Greetings. We believe that sign up for World Cup 9 is closed, so you would be unable to "battle" our esteemed nation on the pitch during this world cup. You could perhaps still sign up for World Cup 10, registration for that is still ongoing. At any rate, thank you for noticing the empire of the Most Holy One. Up the Blades,

No love, I take offense. Aquilla never said anything to me. TBF asked me about a day or two ago. I don't know if they are the same or different, but I didn't know I'd been put down already until Snub told me (that's my dad for those of you who missed it, and I'm his daughter, not son, and certainly not his older sister  )

*cough* Actually, how about we accept all of them, and go with 80 qualifiers, like I've been saying all along I would? 8) That would leave three slots to be filled. Which is not likely to be a problem.

EB and I are now working on getting things started.

alright loves, give us a list of everyone who's coming and asterisks next to people who will be playing in the round robin. we'll make up some teams, paying little attention really to who plays what position, sorry. the couple is still deciding if they want to be on the same team or take the same random chance. any thoughts?
