"We're in," commented the Acting Minister of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages when asked about World Cup 9, "People wouldn't stand for it if their Hooligans didn't participate."

When asked if he meant the Snub Nose 38 International Football side known as "The Hooligans", or the Cheerleading Squad for them, also known as "The Hooligans" the minister looked confused, stuttered an incoherent response, and wandered away in a daze.

"Both," said his secretary, Beverly. She refused to make any additional comments.

28-09-2003, 01:18
Liverpool England are in, and this is how we propose our 3-way format with TBF and Kaze will work:
80 OR 90 qualifiers
With 80 qualifiers, 10 groups of 8, let top 2 and best third placed in = 21 + 3 hosts = 24
With 90 qualifiers, 15 groups of 6, let top 2 EXCEPT WORST SECOND PLACED (by Points-GD-GF) = 29 + 3 hosts = 32
With 80 qualifiers, Main Round 4 groups of 6, let in 4 per group = 16
With 90 qualifiers, Main Round 8 groups of 4, let in 2 per group = 16

Then continue in knock-out fashion. With 80 qualifiers, there will be 15 matchdays, compared to 90 qualifiers where there will be 17 matchdays.

EDIT: Rank for WC7: 28, played in WC: 6, 7, (and as it stands now 8 )

Well - if you are open to a bit of help - a long, long time ago i was an illustrator. the logo is nice, but a little busy. if i were doing it, i would

1. take out the little flags on the top and bottom. leave the ones left & right
2. instead of the logo being 1.5 times as tall as it is wide, i'd make it 1.5 times as wide as it is tall - it'll look more like a flag that way.
3. stretch the "9" a little from left to right, so the football looks round.
4. then just clean up the white area inside the "9" and around the football.

It's really a good design that needs a little tweaking.

Guys, I've been working on a trophy for the cup. I thought it too long we've gone without actually having one. It took just too long to make it for WC VIII, however I am humbly submitting the design for WC IX.

We do plan to put in a bid to host the Cup. If Europa Brittania is amenable, however, perhaps we could bid to co-host? It seems a shame that a nation with their history of involvement in the World Cup has yet to host.

Hmm...Well TBH I don't think I'd be capable of running a cup. The number crunching for a start doesn't seem an easy thing to deal with. But I'm always open to new challenges, And Ravenspires idea of a co-host is certainly interesting.....

I understand it's mostly spreadsheet-based. I'd be happy to handle most of the numbers until you feel more comfortable with it, though. You've obviously got artistic skills I lack, so I'd call that more than even. And we can still collaborate on the logistical issues, like setting up the groups.

Input from others?
Ravenspire
30-09-2003, 01:49
If Ravenspire and Europa Brittania succeed in their bid, I was planning on one of the following:

* 80 qualifiers, arranged as 10 groups of 8. Top three in each enter, for 30, plus 2 hosts = 32. The main round would then be 8 groups of 4, with the top two in each proceeding.

* 90 qualifiers, arranged as 15 groups of 6 or as 10 groups of 9. Top two or three in each enter, for 30, plus 2 hosts = 32. Main round as above.

(I'm leaning toward fewer groups with more in each group, because I think it's more interesting when there are more seeded players competing for slots. But 10 groups of 9 would lead to one team not playing on any given match day, which I would like to avoid. Plus, I'd need to see what EB thinks about the matter.)

75 would work for us, though it would lead to some teams having days off:

* 75 qualifiers, arranged as 15 groups of 5. Top two in each enter, for 30, plus 2 hosts = 32. Main round as above.

Five is also a rather small group for qualifying, though. I'd really prefer to go with 80 qualifiers, since that number allows for some decent-sized groups. Would the extra five teams really add that much work?

Hmm... come to that, I think it should be possible to generate a table from the spreadsheet result data, though I'm not sure how well formatted it would be.

Seven or eight teams in a group makes things a bit more exciting.

But if we do do seven or eight teams, two matches against each team = a crapton of matches. In WC4 and WC5 teams only played each other once, lowering the amount of games played quite a bit and I think that setup worked pretty well.

I mean, WC6 and we had 14 matches for qualifying. It's almost bad for the really good teams since they'll end up winning/drawing 10 and the last 4 will not matter for them.

I think it'll be okay as long as we keep things moving during qualifiers -- an extra four days shouldn't matter that much. WC6 had some delays drawing things out, IIRC. Plus, my gut instinct is, it actually improves things for unranked teams, because they get more games with which to improve their standing for next time. One loss might not matter much for a top-50 team, but one win can make a big difference for a newbie.

If people think it would be a problem, we could try releasing two results per RL day. It'd probably cut down on the RP a bit, but very few teams RP every match as it is, and quality of RP posts means more than quantity does.

Five is also a rather small group for qualifying, though.

TnUI's capping idea mightn't be a bad one, although we would need to have some kindda probation list thing i feel.

Already in my qualifying group for WC8 the 2 unseeded teams look likly to 'disappear' (if they haven't already by now) when i checked yesterday, one had been inactive for 19 days, one for 20.

If we are 'limiting' numbers, it would be advisable to weed out these kind of nations before the start of the tournament to give those really interested the chance of joining in

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/395015/logov2.GIF

Their suggestion is for thirteen groups of seven (81 teams) with the top two going through automatically for 26 places. All the third-placed sides bar the one with the worst record meet in a two-legged playoff (randomly drawn) with the winners taking the final six places.

This is very similar to, but bigger than, the European qualifying for the 1998 World Cup.

My favorite so far, I'd say, was TB's for 5. Though I rather thought Audioslavia's for Seven was pretty clever. Come to think of it, that was a play on his flag.

My favorite so far, I'd say, was TB's for 5. Though I rather thought Audioslavia's for Seven was pretty clever. Come to think of it, that was a play on his flag.

Now, should Gilmeecia ever host (which we won't), our flag would definitely be worked into the logo. And you'd see the damn thing everywhere.
The Minister of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages thinks deeply (well, as deeply as he is able) about the message from Gilmeecia to all WC participants, regarding WC logos. Several things come to mind (well, if you can call that a mind):

1 - He can't remember what the logo for WC5 was. Or WC6. Or WC7. Or WC4. Or...
2 - He remembers the WC8 logo...at least, for now.
3 - The prospect of a proliferation of Gilmeecian flags causes a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.
4 - What would the logo for a Snub Nose 38 hosted WC (a distinct impossibility) look like? Many pictures come to mind (see above comment regarding "mind), none of which are pretty.

He will have to ask Margaret about this. 8)

Well...that way, you solve one problem, who's going to do the tables. But I think you would also create two new ones-
1 - What happens when the Curse 'O The Cup strikes?
2 - Nobody's checking the tables. Right now, even though it's a pain (particularly to whoever is doing the tables), people are catching the mistakes.

That's a good idea. But the hosts would have to make sure to make some considerations into putting responsible, RPing nations into each group so as to have someone to do the tables: if there were no rankings to consider, I would've grouped all the nations I know for a fact that don't RP and put all the serious-RPing nations together.

But, alas they must be split up for the fairness of the international game.

That's why the first round is so fun.

Anyways, final-summarized statement: TnUI, if we find the correct people in each group to do their own group tables, that'd be a whole lot better because doing 1 table right is a lot more managable than having to do 15.

Getting the nations in the group to put their own tables will be a good idea but then you guys have to make sure that every group would have at least one nation that WILL do the tables. Can that be certain? It's possible, but I'm not too certain about that.

And also something too add to the above, once all 15 group tables (or more or less, depending on what happens) are collected, then someone could put them all on the SCORES thread so that there would be a central place to put them so that others can look back at them OR for archival purposes, etc.

In a press release today the Ministry of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages supported the entry of Hell Bovines in World Cup 9. As a show of friendship the Ministry is circulating a petition, "World Cup 9 Won't Eat Hell Bovines" (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=77525&highlight=). Other like-minded sporting nations who will participate in World Cup 9 are invited to sign.

The Ministry also announced that the Snub Nose 38 Hooligan Cheerleaders simply can't wait for the Hooligans to play Hell Bovines. Apparently they have a few ideas for appropriate (this reporter thinks it's more likely "inappropriate") cheers.

Ok, this is my rant.

Tanah Burung didn't get into the first round.

Jackatazea did.

One of them did no RPing whatsoever. This needs to be the Cup where actively RPing nations get the upper hand. The ones putting the time into rosters and RPing their games deserve more attacks in the equation since it makes no sense to advance teams whose players have done nothing besides take up space in a Cup.

Worst case scenario? We have semi-finals with nations who haven't even looked in the World Cup topic a dozen times.

I don't think TnUI's list of posting nations and less active nations will do it. We need to identify people who have less than a dozen posts in World Cup topics, even if they have at least a hundred elsewhere.

I'm talking Haraki primarily here. He's got 9,000 posts, but I garantee 99% of that is spent in other places than the World Cup.

Because it's pretty lame to see Tanah Burung's spot taken up by someone who doesn't care if their nation wins the World Cup.

I've got to agree - seeing TB knocked out by a no-show doesn't seem right. RPing has to count. I don't know exactly how to do it, but I'm sure the idea is right.

I appreciate the support guys, although them's the breaks and i'll randomly toss insults at you both even without having qualified. Anyways, it can be fun to RP losing. I'm gonna miss TnUI being in the Cup too. (See, TnUI, that's what happens when you say "i'm not going to RP the qualifiers." )

I was suggesting an RP bonus a few Cups back, and although i'm not pressing for it right now, here's some thoughts. I tried an RP bonus in the first field hockey Cup, giving one extra attack or one fewer attack against for a team that RP'ed its previous game, to a maximum of +/- 4 attacks. This affected the results of a total of 3 matches in the opening round, and none in the finals. So i think it might work here, although the down side is it would greatly reduce the rank and attack/defence bonuses in the current formula. KP will presumably be able to tell us how much an RP bonus affects finals when combined with rank after FHWC2. So consider that a dry run that future hosts can consider or not, as they like.

If memory serves, Lemm suggested earlier that teams that entered but never RP'ed might be barred from entering in future Cups. That's another method. I don't actually mind being out, but i'd have no objection to exluding a team like Jacktazea that has not as far as i know RP'ed anything in the World Cup ever (and did not RP in the field hockey either). Not because there's anything against them, but i hate to see the Cup proper have groups with silent teams.

Edit to add: i see that KP is incorporating an RP bonus by having the team's rank fall by one for each match RP'ed. Interesting idea, will be interested to see how that plays out.

I think the "mess-around-with-formulas-based-on-RP" is a better idea because this will allow team to enter if they want, but in the long run, it will be most of the RPers that enter the cup (hopefully). Banning is not so much of a good idea because it discourages newbies from joining. And with less teams, it will be less fun, right?

Edit to add: i see that KP is incorporating an RP bonus by having the team's rank fall by one for each match RP'ed. Interesting idea, will be interested to see how that plays out.

It seems not to have had much of an effect in the eight second-round matches for the following reason: ranks didn't matter much because the 'unranked' sides were given 20, but there was no modification to the formula for each attack from the WC8 results (I think: the formula was a random number up to 1000 and subtracting 850, a positive number resulting in a goal). Hence Wildthings Realm collapsing to first-round humiliation (hell, it gave them RPing opportunities - and besides, what happened to France in Korea-Japan 2002??? ) and a clutch of good performances from unranked sides.

But I think it could work (and is easier to do IMO) - so long as the rank difference is significant enough to encourage RPing. We might have to make the rankings change by more than one (maybe dependant upon RP quality as determined by the host and/or user feedback) to make the bonuses match up to the benefit of extra attacks as utilised by TB. This is the system I will recommend to TBF and LE if we win our bid for WC9. (Apologies for shameless plug :D)

I'm a big fan of RP bonuses... but then, seeing as I regularly RP but am not yet established enough to stand much of a chance of qualifying (I was ranked 82nd, or something, for WC8 qualifying) I'm going to. Hopefully, people won't call me a hypocrite for this...

OOC: But counting of RP posts to the World Cup thread (and maybe related posts, like the roster thread) might be a good way of handling it. It rewards participation in the Cup, and ignores posts racked up elsewhere.

If I were doing it this way, I'd probably peg the scale so that the benefit "tops out" at 1 post per 2 matches. That way, you don't penalize a regular RPer who misses a game now and then, but you still encourage regular RP posts.

Not sure exactly how I'd set up the scale, yet, though. Ideally, "quality" would play a part, but that's a little too subjective for my tastes.

IF EB and I host, I will be instituting some form of RP bonus, at least for the qualifiers; I just need to play with the numbers a bit before I can say exactly what.

*the minister of athletics, olympics, and alcoholic beverages reads the press release regarding the entry of the free land of evisceratomatoes into world cup 9. he pictures a match between this new nation of sentient vegetation and our hooligans. after wondering for a moment how sentient vegetation will move about the pitch, he catches himself. giant zucchini has solved this problem for sentient vegetation everywhere. then, he remembers "the eauzian pelting incident"*

If my count is correct, there are 74 nations signed up. The three way bid calls for 75, 80 or 90 qualifiers.
75 nations = 15G*5 top placed team per group plus all the second placed except the weakest second placed team. = 32
80: 20G*4 top two per group + best third place = 24
4G*6 top four per group = 16
90: similar to 75 nations

Round of 32/24:
75/90 nations (Rd of 32): 8G*4 let in top two per group = 16
80 nations (Rd of 24): stated above

If we get hostin this is what I would suggest.

Messa tinks 74 should be allowed in (not including TBF, LE and KP)
Random nation out of KP, LE and TBF has to qualify
15 groups of 5, top 2 go through.
Simple.

your solution above will produce 44 teams, shouldnt it be:
80: 20G*4 top per group + best third place + 3 hosts = 24
4G*6 top four per group = 16

There are 74 by my count... not sure who's missing.

Of course, that 74 includes the people who've bid to host, so we've actually got only 71 or 72 qualifiers, depending on who's hosting.

I'd prefer to have 80 qualifiers, as I stated earlier; that'd mean 8 open slots, if EB and I are hosting.

81 teams of which three are KP, TBF and LE, the hosts.

Remaining 78 teams: 13 groups of 6. Top two from each group go through by right. Top six third-placed sides meet in two-legged playoffs, winners take the final three spots.

Here are some puppets I'm considering founding, to enter in the Cup:

Puppetmeecia

Pooplemoosica
Pampelmowse

And I'd say the original Master of Puppets, Metallica, but someone's prolly already used that name.

Gil/Lemm/DA, I challenge your Lemmitanian team to fit in as many musical references as possible.

I could simply name all the players after musicians-- Audioslavia did that for a while. Lessee, I think I'd go with Mel Collins, Bill Bruford, Peter Sinfield (not technically a musician, perhaps), Toyah Wilcox, Trey Gunn, John Wetton, Sara Lee, Boz Burrell, David Cross, Pat Mastellotto, and Greg Lake. Coached by Robert Fripp, of course.

Joe Lally of Fugazi is a good start
