We are SO in, but couldn't we wait to get WC 6 AND 7 finished (or at least get 7 underway) before we start 8? Oh well... even though still waiting for a response for WC 7, Worm Microsystems would like to offer its sponsorship for this major sporting event.

I already added you. WC6 is in limbo and WC7 starts tomorrow. Let me get this straight, you want to finish WC7, then spend 4 weeks getting nation names for WC8, then start WC8?

Nono. I've been reading the WC6 thread(s), just to get used to how it works here, and noticed that it wasn't finished yet. WC7 hasn't even started, so I thought the move was a little premature. Guess this shows my lack of experience in the WC. My apologies if I seemed out of place.

As part of Errinundera's application to host WC8 we will, during the course of WC7, introduce the Committee to the various venues that will hold matches.

Milosis Coliseum, McKillops Bridge

In the far north of Errinundera lies McKillops Bridge, the most famous of the nation's populous northern cities. Built on the banks of the grand Snowy River, which has its headwaters in nations to the north, McKillops Bridge is the usual entry point for visitors to Errinundera.

When you arrive at the docks the first of many surprises awaits you. There are no border controls. Entry to and from Errinundera is totally unrestricted. The only barrier to your entry is an enormous receptacle and the following sign:

Please leave all meat, leather, guns and cars in bin provided.

Most visitors happily comply. The Errinundrian sniffer wombats are legendary.

McKillops Bridge has been built on a section of the river that has bent around to flow towards the north again, before looping around to once more continue its journey south to the sea. With the western side of the city in the eastern half of the country and the eastern side in the western half, visitors are easily confused. That's Errinundera for you - always contrary.

Despite the fertility of the great river, this region of Errinundera is in a rainshadow so you will find no sign of the famous rainforests of the central plateau. Instead the landscape is dominated by white and black cypress pines. As these are quite unsuitable as house trees, the Bridge folk live in ground houses or in caves built into the cliffs along the river.

Sixty metre granite cliffs dominate the western bank here in McKillops Bridge. (Remember, this is in the eastern side of the country). The eastern bank is flat. Connecting the top of the cliff to the opposite bank is the centuries old pride of the city, a staircase 30 metres broad, spanning the width of the river and supported by a pair of beautiful parabolic arches. At the top of the staircase that gives the city its modern name is the palace of the former royal family. A wide avenue leads from the red granite palace to the beautiful white Star Temple, home of a religious sect that was used to hold Errinundera in its thrall. The palace and temple are now national museums.

Until the 1905 revolution the city was known as Milosis. Indeed the upper section of the city still goes by that name. The royal family, priests, soldiers and government officials lived on the upper bank and artisans and workers lived on the lower bank.

In 1889 British explorers arrived in Errinundera. One of them seduced the then queen and was anointed king. A venal and arrogant man, he was despised by Errinundrians. Civil war broke out with resistance led by the queen's younger sister. This culminated in the defeat and death of the younger sister and the complete subjugation of a rebellious nation by the queen and her usurper husband. Resistance continued, especially in the dense forests of the plateau where the queen's army was ill equipped to fight. Finally, in 1905, following a massacre of thousands of protesters upon the bridge, the army revolted and liquidated most of the royal family. A puritanical government took control and moved the capital to First Creek Falls. It, in turn, collapsed in 1941 to be replaced by the current libertarian regime.

Adjacent to the palace upon the cliff-top is the ancient coliseum. This three-sided granite structure has been refurbished to bring it up to international standards. Now accommodating 41,000 fans, it has all facilities expected of a modern stadium, including giant colour screens, heated seating, corporate boxes and state of the art player amenities.

The unusual feature of the McKillops Bridge Coliseum is that the pitch goes almost to the edge of the cliff affording a dizzying view for players and spectators alike. Fans in the top row seats can see far into the east of Errinundera. A secure mesh fence prevents people and players from falling over the edge. The ground is the home of 2nd division side Milosis (The White Guard) and, much to the chagrin of the upper city folk, has become a sort of permanent temporary home to powerful 1st division side McKillops Bridge (The Kingfishers) which has its support among the lower city folk.

There is mild resentment that political power has resided in First Creek Falls for the last century. Bridge Folk see their city as the cultural, historical and intellectual capital of the nation in much the same way St Petersburg natives would view their city in relation to Moscow. The rivalry is not bitter but it is an undercurrent that is always tugging away. The Falls Folk are airheads (they live in trees) and the Bridge Folk are blockheads (the live in rectangular stone houses).

Visitors are free to travel about McKillops Bridge. Walk into any house - you will be most welcome. You'll also get a hearty, but stodgy vegetarian meal: lentil soup or nutloaf. As the welcoming sign on the docks suggest, the great curses of modern civilization, guns and cars, are absent here. A comprehensive tram and rail network will take you anywhere you care to go. And they're free.

Sure, we have a tendency to ban things. It's probably a relic of our puritanical past. So along with guns and cars you won't find cigarettes, gambling, meat or leather, police or armies. These things are considered quite nasty. On the other hand, our drug raves are internationally famous and our attitude to nudity and sex is quite relaxed. If sex and leather is your thing we have no shortage of substitutes for you. It's all a question of what is harmful. I figured you actually had a reason for that. There will (probably) be two hosts, correct? And for everything to work smoothly, we'd need 90 teams *other than* the hosts. (15 groups of 6, top 2 in each group advance = 30 total + 2 hosts = 32) So I figured you just weren't counting the hosts (whoever they end up being) in the total.

THE MOUNT ELLERY CAVERN

http://www.gtaust.com/articles/images/JAS04lr.jpg
Mount Ellery Cavern being prepared for the official opening

By Errinundrian standards, Mt Ellery is an singular place. Here,
people don't live in trees like the inhabitants of the vast central
plateau. Nor do they live in buildings like the inhabitants of the
northern plains or the Snowy River valley. They live underground.
But like so many other people in this green nation they chose
their mode of living for the best environmental and aesthetic
reasons.

At just over 3000m above sea level, Mt Ellery is the highest
peak in the nation. The granite tors on its summit loom above
the surrounding rainforest-clad plateau. On its sides nestle
many towns and villages such as the well-known football loving
Ellery Camp, Goongerah and Goolengook. Just below the
summit is the city of Mount Ellery.

And when I say just below, I mean directly below. In order to
preserve the beauty of their mountain home the Mountain
Folk, as they call themselves, have mined a city into the
granite heart of their home. The red and grey Mount Ellery
granite is prized all over Errinundera and indeed the world.
The ancient city of Milosis (now McKillops Bridge) is entirely
built of the finest ME red granite. So the building of the other
cities went hand-in-hand with the excavating of the city of
Mount Ellery. Granite mining is now strictly regulated ensuring
that the price remains high and that it matches the growth of
the city. The Mount Ellery Mining Co-operative is fully owned by,
and a nice little earner for, the city council or, in other words,
the city inhabitants themselves.

Eight years ago, in order to not fall behind its rival cities in the
Errinundrian Football Association, the City of Mount Ellery
decided to build the largest and most modern stadium in the
nation. At the time the largest stadium was the 32,000 seat
Frosty Hollow Stadium. Clearly, something of this order of
magnitude could not be built on the outside of the mountain but,
equally clearly, the engineering challenges in building it
underground were daunting. A 52,000 seat capacity ground was
calculated as the largest practicable and a seven-year excavating
and furbisment program was anticipated. Unfortunately for the
ambitions of the Mountain Folk, the northern city of Bonang has
since commenced building a 90,000 seat above ground stadium
and First Creek Falls has started construction of a 64,000 seat
stadium a short distance downstream from their city.

The major advantage of an underground stadium is obvious:
weather has no effect on the games. In winter the temperature
outside can be minus twenty degrees Celsius but patrons will
be snug and warm away from any blizzards in an environment
where the temperature varies by less than 2 degrees all year
round. Similarly in summer, there is no trace of the hot north
wind that can bedevil the nation.

In typical Errinundrian bloody-minded fashion, the local
administration is determined to have a natural grass playing
surface. This has created considerable difficulties. The solution
is to suspend enormous sun lamps from the ceiling that, during
daylight hours when the ground is not being used, are lowered to
only one metre above the grass. Automatically computer controlled,
the lights imitate exactly the brightness and wavelength of light
falling on a chosen spot in the outside world.

The Mountain Folk are generally viewed by other Errinundrians as
being somewhat closed and inscrutable. Some theorists suggest
that living in artificial light for 24 hours a day has made them a bit
odd. But what is odd to an Errinundrian? Who knows? In practical
terms it means that it's not considered polite to just walk into
someone's house as you can elsewhere in the nation. On the other
hand, if you start talking to the Mountain Folk sitting next to you
when you're watching a World Cup Match in the stadium the odds
are you'll be invited home for dinner.

Politically they are as rabidly green and left wing as anybody else in
the nation. Due to the constant temperature in Mount Ellery only the
warm lowland towns and cities such as Bemm River, Lilly Pilly Creek
and Martin Creek rival its nudity rates. As in the rest of the nation,
cars are banned here. There is a heart-in-mouth monorail system
that travels at high speed up, down and around the multilevel city.
The locals call it the Big Dipper. Visitors invariably get lost as, unless
you grow up there, coping with the concept of a three dimensional
city is usually beyond the mental capacity of normal people.

The stadium is nearing completion and will have its official opening
immediately prior to the eighth WC7 qualifying match against DePaul.
A spectacular ceremony is planned for the occasion.

THE BONANG CRICKET GROUND

http://www.arup.com.au/images/projects/large/MCG.jpg
An architect's drawing of the stadium

The thing that people always remember when you put the two
words, "Bonang" and "football" together in a conversation is the
nickname of the city's team - the Gonads. When the club started
as some yobbos' excuse for a weekend piss-up they gave
themselves the alliterative and ribald monicker, not realizing the big
strides the club would make. When later, more particular, club
officials tried to change the name; the fans ignored them and
continued to use the name on their banners, scarves and jumpers.
At an official launch of a sponsored new name - The Wombats -
irate fans set firehoses on the officials and sponsors. So,
reluctantly, the traditional name was formally accepted as the
name of the city's team: the Bonang Gonads.

Bonang is the nation's largest city yet tends to be treated with
some derision by other Errinundrians. Lying on the northern plains
it has no geographical feature to distinguish it. Once forested like
the great central plateau, the northern plains were severely
deforested between the 1905 revolution and the 1941 internal
liberation. This clear-felling continued after the liberation due to a
clever legal exploition of a quirk in the constitution that gave the
notorious NGDV Ltd unexpected rights over the plains. The
collapse of this company eight years ago brought an end to the
logging. The cleared land was never re-forested. Instead, the fertile
soils feed the nation and fuel the growth of the great northern
cities, Bendoc, Bonang, Dellicknora and Tubbut.

With the wealth from the logging and farming, Bonang has grown
to be the financial hub of Errinundera, something that is resented
by the "old" money of McKillops Bridge. The rivalry between these
two cities is intense. Errinundrians from the Snowy River valley and
from the central plateau look down their noses at the plains people
as comparatively materialistic (by Errinundera's very strict
standards), provincial, uncultured and a bit dense. This doesn't
seem to worry the Plains Folk as the are smug in the knowledge
that they are more practical, harder-working, wealthier (by
Errinundera's very low standards) and more, well, normal.

Bonang came into minor prominence during World Cup 6 when
fans, incensed by taunting from Lemmitanian radio broadcasters
during the semi-final, trashed the local lammington factory. Two
things can be observed from this. One: Bonangers can be as weird
as any Errinundrians. Two: Perhaps their reputation as being rustic
and a bit thick has some basis.

http://www.mcg.org.au/content/image/00000042-image.jpg
The stadium will enhance the aura of Bonang

Coming late to the sublime and sophisticated sport of football they
have, nonetheless, taken it up with the same passion as the rest of
the nation. After only two seasons in the Errinundrian Football
Association they look certain to be promoted to the first division.
With a bulging war chest, the Bonang Gonads looks set to poach
top-name players from the established first division clubs.

This confidence in their footballing future is reflected in the city's
decision to build the largest stadium in the nation, the 101,000 seat
Bonang Cricket Ground. Why that name? The ground's primary
use for over a hundred years has been as a cricket ground. It will
continue to be used as such in summer although the few thousand
that attend cricket matches will be dwarfed by the stands.

The mayor of the city, kirnerj, also had the World Cup in mind. "For
the World Cup final you obviously need a stadium that can
accomodate around 100,000 people. We saw this as a chance to
stage something of a coup. No other city in Errinundera has the
resources to build something to match it." She is absolutely correct:
the final will be held at the stadium.

The stadium, consisting of two great semi-circular stands (built and
designed by competing companies) is nearing completion. The
Great Southern Stand is already completed and the Great Northern
Stand should be ready in plenty of time for World Cup 8.

http://www.mcg.org.au/content/image/00000060-image.jpg
A model of the new stadium, clearly showing the 2 stands.

BTW, we must admit to Errinundera's biggest hurdle in winning the
right to host World Cup 8: advertising is severely
restricted. Yes, it is a drawback if sponsors are hoping to
advertise within Errinundera. We have no restrictions on sponsors
being allowed to advertise in external broadcasts. (Hey, we may
not like them but we're happy to take their money!)

[WARNING: Lots of pictures in this post. Of course, if you're reading this, your browser is probably already loading the pictures anyway. :P]

Here follows a list of nine stadia that the Bedistan Football Association has authorized for potential World Cup use, should Bedistan and Oglethorpia be selected to host the Cup. They are listed in order from smallest to largest.

[Note on construction dates: Bedistan was founded in 2003, and the current year is 2011.]

Skytouch Stadium
High Mountain, Latia
Capacity: 39,419
Completed: 2009
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/skytouch_stadium.jpg
At an elevation of 7,039 feet, this is the highest stadium in Bedistan.

Cloudburst Stadium
New Town, Novania
Capacity: 44,911
Completed: 2006
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/cloudburst_stadium.jpg
Five years may not sound like a long time for a stadium to have been around, but the fact is Cloudburst is the oldest large-scale football stadium in northern Bedistan.

Stadium of the South
Dennis, Paruvia
Capacity: 49,006
Completed: 2007
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/stadium_of_the_south.jpg
As its name suggests, this stadium is located in the southern part of the nation. It was built as a new venue for Paruvian sports after the former state of Columbia split into Paruvia and the Federal District in 2004.

Westin Stadium
Graceville, Limpania
Capacity: 52,336
Completed: 2010
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/westin_stadium.jpg http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/westin_stadium2.jpg

Hillside Stadium
Hampton, Palladia
Capacity: 55,097
Completed: 2006
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/hillside_stadium.jpg
So named because the stadium is located very close to the side of a 400-foot hill. The second stadium to be completed in the north.

PariMedia Field
Sonoma City, Sonoma
Capacity: 62,947
Under construction - estimated completion late 2011-early 2012
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/parimedia_field.jpg
The only football stadium in the nation to be named after a sponsoring corporation.

Setting Sun Field
Alexandria, Neshoba
Capacity: 70,498
Completed: 2008
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/setting_sun_field.jpg

Unity Stadium
International City of Paripana
Capacity: 75,000
Completed: 2007
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/unity_stadium.jpg
The International City of Paripana was created after the conclusion of the Paripanan War, which was a brief conflict involving the nations of Bedistan, Commerce Heights, Baetica, Boopsylvania, and Lontorica that took place in the mid-2000s. The city was built on the location where Bedistan, Commerce Heights, and Lontorica meet, and is under administration of all three nations. Unity Stadium is meant to show the continuing friendship between these three very different countries.

Holmes Stadium
Columbia, Federal District
Capacity: 82,814
Completed: 2005
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/holmes_stadium.jpg http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/holmes_stadium2.jpg
Holmes Stadium, located in the national capital of Columbia, was the first football stadium to be completed in the nation and remains the largest.

Here is a map of Bedistan showing the locations of these cities:
http://members.aol.com/harleyt1387/bedistan_map.gif
[Note: This map isn't totally up to date. The city of Sonoma has since been renamed Sonoma City. The Sean Empire II is no longer in existence -- the western portion of that former nation is currently unclaimed, while the rest now belongs to the nations of Silverbrook and Karacos.]

WHICH HOST HAS THE MOST?

(From the Daily Crocodile)

After some recent hosting troubles, there should be no problems for World Cup 8, with a number of strong candidates in the running. Members of the World Cup Committee (composed of former hosts) have already been shown some of the pleasures of Errinundera and Bedistan and hope to see some of the other countries before making their final decision.

Why so many plausible candidates? Observers speculate that the Curse of the World Cup, in which at least one host country ceases to exist, may finally be beaten.

Gambling maven Mau Slurp has is accpeting bets on the winner of the right to host the world's most prestigious sporting competition. Two candidates are named as co-facourites, Mau Slurp said: "Gorillalandera at 2-1, that one sounds like lots of fun. Same odds on Oglebedistan, what a Cup they're sure to plan!"

Mau Slurp's odds on other candidate countries: Liverpool England-Timway 3-1, The Belmore Family 4-1, Aquilla 6-1, Haraki 8-1, Pure Evil 8-1, Rave Shentavo 8-1. Those willing to bet on Kingsford are being offered 20-1 odds. "Ya never know," Slurp said. "I think the judge from TnUI can be bought."

Errinundera be successful in its bid to host World Cup 8.

THE B TRIPLE R

Like so many cities, towns and structures in Errinundera, The
Bemm River Recreation Reserve takes advantage of its natural
environment. Built on an island in the centre of the river, the
stadium expanded over the years so that, now, no trace of the
island is visible from the riverbanks. The stadium gives the illusion
of rising out of the river itself.

We are now in the southern lowlands of Errinundera, just below
the plateau escarpment. The tributaries of the Errinundera and
Combienbar Rivers tumble over the edge of the plateau in
beautiful waterfalls - First Creek Falls being the most famous.
Eventually the two rivers join to become the slow moving Bemm
River, meandering through dense warm temperate rainforest. At
1000 metres below the plateau the temperature is much warmer
and the forest quite different in type.

The Bemms consider themselves forest folk just like the plateau
dwellers. They too live in house trees connected by magnificent
skywalks. Indeed the B Triple R, as it is affectionately called, can
only be accessed via just such skywalks that bring the fans into
the stadium through its roof. Someone canooing down the river
may think they are in a pristine wilderness until they round a bend
in the river and see graceful parabolic fingers stretching from all
directions out of the tree canopy and meeting at the admittedly
rather ugly edifice in the middle of the river.

The big advantage that they have, however, is the temperature.
Bemm River is the nudest place in the country. To dress for
important occasions is to be considered terribly uncouth. Patrons
and performers of the city's several orchestras, opera companies
and chamber groups never wear clothes to a performance unless
an unusually cold snap has struck. When this does occur the
Bemms go overboard and dress outrageously. If you have to wear
clothes, then treat it as a bit of naughty fun, seems to be the
reasoning.

The Bemms are more prone than the plateau folk to altering their
environment. Back from the river itself you will find many public
monuments and stoneworks between the trees. They love
ampitheatres and watergardens and statuary. Some of them date
back over a thousand years, showing that the love of
ornamentation has long been a feature of Bemm River life. A walk
between the trees is a serene antitode to the pressures of daily
life. The style is never grand but always graceful and intimate.
Vines trail from the trees, bright green moss covers everything and
staghorn ferns grow wherever they can obtain purchase: on tree
trunks, walls, rocks and statues.

The B Triple R was one of the first large stadiums built when
football was introduced to Errinundera and has therefore been
well and truly overtaken by later developments. A new stand has
increased the capacity to 35,000 and facilities, while not bad, are
only adequate. The lowland clubs have not been successful in the
EFA championship. Only Bemm River and Lilly Pilly Creek remain in
the first division and Bemm River looks like it will join Combienbar
and Bola Mine in the second division.

Continuing the presentation on the venues to be used should
Errinundera be successful in its bid to host World Cup 8.

THE NATIONAL DOWNFALL ARENA

Despite being home to the founder of Errinundrian football, the
nation's capital city, First Creek Falls, has never had a proper home
ground. For the last 12 years the team has shared Rooty Break's
home ground at Frosty Hollow. Part of the reason is the inability to
find a suitable location close to the city whilst at the same time not
harming the extraordinary environment of the area. After
considerable political headbanging a location was finally been
decided upon.

To understand why there has been such difficulty, it is important to
be familiar with the unique splendour of the city and to know the
people who live there.

First Creek Falls is named after and located at the base, the top
and behind the 600-metre waterfall of the same name. The
populace resides in trees at the base of the falls. In order that the
national animal, the long-footed potoroo, may frolic freely, it is
illegal to disturb the ground in any way beneath the trees. All the
trees are owned by the Free State of Errinundera, People rent
trees at market rates from government and build tree-houses of
any design they choose provided the tree is healthy and the
house is built safely. There is a magnificent array of aerial
walkways between trees that grow as high as 130 metres:
mountain ash, alpine ash, shining gum, messmate and cut-tail
(also known as brown barrel). The gullies below feature the most
loved of all the trees - the southern sassafras - with its lime-green
foliage and Enid Blyton toytown shape. The most sought after
locations are naturally close to the falls where the constant spray
from the falls allows magnificent fern and epiphyte gardens to
flourish in the trees.

Other than shops, which can also be built in the trees, all business
and administrative buildings are located on the plateau at the
summit of the falls. Regulations prohibit these buildings from being
visible from the tree houses. An extensive but hidden elevator
network has been mined in the rock behind the falls so that people
can quickly and easily go about their business.

The greatest threats to this idyllic lifestyle are bush-fire and
political skullduggery. On Black Friday (13 January 1939) over
6,000 perished when a crown fire raged through the house trees.
This prompted the then Protector to implement the notorious "War
Against Bushfire" policy which severely curtailed human rights
throughout Errinundera. Historians estimate that somewhere
between 12,000 and 30,000 Errinundrians died as a direct
consequence of this policy. In a backlash against this dark time in
our history, the people began the great, peaceful civil
disobedience campaign which culminated in that particular
Protector shooting himself - the last known gun death in the
country on 7 December 1941, now celebrated as Liberation Day.

On Ash Wednesday (16 February 1983) another bush-fire
destroyed Upper First Creek Falls, wiping out many businesses
much to everyone's glee. This part of the city has been completely
re-built since, with the marshes and creek (river really) being
developed into a beautiful "water quarter" as it is affectionately
called. Transport between all buildings is by gondola. Much to the
embarrassment of Errinundrians the largest (and ugliest) building
in the water quarter had been, until recently, headquarters of
NGDV Ltd, Errinundera's notorious woodchip export company. After
Errinundera qualified for WC5, happy revellers destroyed the
building.

When the EFA began to formulate its plans to host WC8 they knew
that an appropriate stadium was required for the capital city. The
new stadium is currently being erected lower down the
escarpment on a spot that was severely degraded by prospectors
over a hundred years ago. The location, known as Downfall, is at
the base of one of several waterfalls and cataracts downstream
from First Creek Falls.

With stands only along the sides of the pitch, the gap in the
northern end of the arena is dominated by the 50-metre waterfall
that seems to fill it entirely. The gap in the southern end looks
down the Errinundera River Valley towards Bemm River. At night
the lights twinkling from between the trees in Bemm River will be
visible from the stadium. A cable car system is being built to
connect the stadium to the nearby First Creek Falls, which cannot
be seen from the stadium.

The capacity of the ground, when completed, will be 64,000. There
were initial concerns that the shape of the stadium would create a
wind tunnel. Extensive tests have allayed these fears. The
escarpment above the ground and the steep ridges on either side
create a pocket of still air. Spectating here will be a memorable
experience.

There has been much debate between the Bonang and First Creek
Falls over who should host the final. This is a classic battle
between north and south. The final decision has not yet been
made by the EFA.

There are 3 more arenas to describe:

FROSTY HOLLOW

In World Cup 6, Frosty Hollow was the designated national stadium and the official ground for all Errinundera's home games during qualifying. Located on the outskirts of Rooty Break, it is also the home ground of two of the nation's most famous sides, Rooty Break and First Creek Falls. With a capacity of only 35,000 and FCF soon to relocate to their new ground, the Rooty Break club decided that a major overhaul of the stadium was required if they were to continue to host international matches. So, first up, they bulldozed the old stadium. No sentiment here! Of course, this then meant that both FCF and Rooty Break had to find somewhere to play. The nearby Goonmirk Rocks team happily offered to accomodate them. Such is life in Errinundera.

Like the B Triple R in Bemm River, fans will enter this new stadium through its roof. The two stadia, however, could hardly be more dissimilar. Located on the Errinundera Plateau, Frosty Hollow is well and truly landlocked. The notable thing about the new arena will be that, instead of being built above ground, a gigantic pit is being excavated into the ground. All the while, the constructors are taking great care not to damage the gigantic trees that grow right up to the edge of the stadium. "Errinundera is forest and forest is Errinundera," explains construction manager, eservat, "and so the idea is for these magnificent trees to utterly dominate the view from inside the stadium. The outside edge of the roof is only half a metre above the surrounding ground. From inside, what you will see is the illusion of a forest growing out of the roof. The largest trees are over 120 metres high and have a diameter of nearly 20 metres. Compare this with the height from the playing surface to the roof, which is about 70 metres. We aim to give the impression of being in the very heart of the forest." When completed it will comfortably seat 45,000 people.

The town of Rooty Break is in the Errinundera Plateau's football and forest heartland. It is only short distance to other famous footballing cities, towns and villages: Coast Range, Goonmirk Rocks, First Creek Falls, Fanny Moo, Cobb Hill, Kanooka Creek and Sassafras Basin. The geographic name of so many towns in Errinundera is evidence of the people's deep attachment to their environment. In a village like Fanny Moo you could walk right below it without realizing it's there.

Like other Plateau Folk the Rooties are extremely communitarian in their outlook. There is a deep belief in a collective responsibility for the welfare of everybody. If my neighbour is down and out then so am I. This collectivism goes hand in hand with a virulent disrespect for hierarchy and anything that smacks of wankery. By all means be as eccentric as you like but don't make out that, by being so, you are better than the next person.

If you have the good fortune to visit Rooty Break during WC8 you will be billeted with one of the local families in the tree house. The food may be stodgy but, really, it's the company that makes the meal. You will find the Rooties the most charming and generous of hosts.

A word of warning though: don't mention free market politics. Especially if you are upset by the sight of naked people rolling about the floor, laughing their arses off.

Continuing the presentation on the venues to be used should Errinundera be successful in its bid to host World Cup 8.

THE AMPITHEATRE

Let us now travel west from the central plateau of Errinundera. We shall continue past Mount Ellery and head toward the distant Snowy River. Here the plateau breaks up into a series of ridges and valleys with sparkling streams that gradually tumble southwestward through pristine forests toward the great river.

Rodger River is one such tributary of the Snowy. It is probably the most untouched forest in the entire nation. It has its headwaters at Monkeytop, a curving ridge that affords a panoramic view of the bowl-like valley. On the highest point of the ridge is the tree-town of Monkeytop. At a lower point around the ridge is Big Tree Camp. Miles away downstream are the towns of Waratah Flat and, surprise surprise, Rodger River. The four towns are the only settlements in this vast wilderness. Yet they are four of the giants of Errinundrian football.

Just outside Big Tree Camp is the spectacular Big Tree Camp Ampitheatre. It is not actually a stadium as such. From the outskirts of Big Tree Camp the valley falls away quite steeply. A gigantic stone amiptheatre has been constructed on one particularly steep section. At its base there is a flat area just large enough for a football pitch. 20,000 people can sit in an arc around the pitch while the players' facilities are mined into the hillside under the ampitheatre. Like the Milosis Coliseum in McKillops Bridge and the soon to be completed Downfall Stadium in Errinundera, splendid views form a backdrop to the football action. But, whereas the other 2 stadia are only open at the ends, the Ampitheatre is half a circle. Quite simply, the outlook is vast.

Floating: that is the oft-used word to describe the heady experience of a visit here.

The town is unsurprisingly named for its sacred tree, ITEN. This is the largest tree in all Errinundera. Not necessarily the tallest, but definitely containing the most cubic metres of wood. Although Errinundrians are mostly atheists, it is a tradition to visit the tree once in a lifetime and climb to its lookout which provides 360-degree views from the ridge top. Some people claim that if your eyesight is good, the light is coming from the right dircection, and the air is clear, then the graceful arc of McKillops Bridge can be seen sparkling in the far distant northwest.

The people of Big Tree Camp may be remote from other Errinundrians but they share, in full measure, their generosity, compassion and political righteousness.

Still to come: Waratah Flat

Speaking as a potential host, I say either restore it to the original 90, or leave it at 75. Why? Because with either 75 or 90 teams, it's easy to get 30 qualifiers from those (assuming two auto-qualifiers; i.e. hosts ;)). If 75 teams, do 15 groups of 5 and take the top two from each group. If 90 teams, do it the same way Lem and Audio are doing it now (15 groups of 6, top two in each group advance).

As for TBF's suggestion of 80 teams...let's see...actually, that wouldn't be too difficult -- 8 groups of 10, top 3 in each group advance. 18 qualifying matches would take a while, though. While 80 teams would work, I'd have to go with either 75 or 90 in the interest of not having qualifiers take three weeks by themselves.

PROTECTOR OF SPORT COMFIRMS
JOINT BID WITH THE BELMORE FAMILY

In a press release, that frankly hasn't surprised anybody, the Protector of Sport, filthyl, has confirmed that Errinundera will combine with The Belmore Family in their bid to secure rights to host World Cup 8.

"Quality bids from the Bedistan / Oglethorpia consortium and the Liverpool England / Timway consortium clearly demonstrated to us that nations making joint bids had far more resources to throw at their applications," he said. "We are utterly determined to secure World Cup 8 and have accepted that it is unlikely that we will convince the committee to grant us the right on our own. Other than the 2 consortia mentioned, The Belmore Family was, along with Errinundera, the standout application so far. We approached them with the proposal, which was immediately accepted. My Belmore counterpart has been extremely enthusiastic about the synergies involved. We couldn't agree more."

We approached the captain of the Longfoots, moschatuma, for his thoughts on the matter. "From my point of view, and I sure I'm speaking for my teammates here, I would dearly love to play in World Cup matches in front of Errinundrians. Unfortunately, I'd be 36 if we were successful and I think it would be fanciful to imagine I would be there."

antarcticad is more optimistic. "Every cell in my body becomes 100% switched on during a World Cup match. If it were held at home I fear they may all explode in the excitement. I've got at least one more World Cup campaign in me and I would love to share the wonder with other Errinundrians."

We also spoke with gabriellen who was the star striker in Errinundera's first campaign back in World Cup 5. She expressed amazement at how the game had expanded throughout the nation. "To think, only 12 years ago the sport wasn't even played here. Now we are constructing giant grounds all over the place. And people like antarcticad, oreadest, moschatuma and fionar have become household names around the world. Who would have thought? So much credit must go to filthyl. He has organised Errinundrian football from scratch. World Cup 8 would be in very dependable hands."

Now, on the topic of number of teams....

I think 77 is a good number (assuming that there is a joint bid). means 15 groups of 5, which makes things a lot easier, and top 2 go through, plus the two hosts, which makes 32. So yeah. And in that case.... I'd like to enter East Spaam :P

The final presentation on the venues to be used should Errinundera be successful in its bid to host World Cup 8.

FLATLANDS

http://www.mssc.com.au/images/OLYMPICPARK.JPG

After our trip from one side of the nation to the other, from Rooty Break to Big Tree Camp, let us now travel down the long and winding Rodger River to the town of Waratah Flat. Careful now, this river isn't navigable, so pack your compass and camping equipment, we're going bush for a couple of weeks.

After much strenous hiking through dense forest the hiker is always amazed to come upon the strange and legendary Waratah Flat. What is so legendary? Well, despite the romantic name and despite being in the heart of Errinundera's wilderness, Waratah Flat must be the most boring place in the nation. You know the sort of place. Every country has one. A town that is always prospering, always going about its business without the slightest fuss, and never giving offence to anyone. And yet no-one can ever think of a reason for visiting.

And why is this amazing? Well, although surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of rainforest in all directions, Waratah Flat is situated on a small dry plain (apart from the river flowing through, of course). The town wasn't founded until after the 1941 Liberation and extensive surveys have failed to provide any evidence of prior human habitation. The plain seems to be perfectly natural. How is this so? No-one has yet come up with an adequate answer. The best guess is that the shape of the surrounding topography and the direction of the prevailing winds have created a micro-rainshadow area.

Divorced from the forest, the Waratahs have eschewed the homestyles of other Errinundrians. They live in simple mud-brick ground houses. The houses are neat and re-painted regularly. The pathways are well maintained and clean. The football team has a reputation for precision, fairness and stubborness. The Flatlands stadium has a capacity of 21,000 that is just about perfect for the town. It is never sold out and yet it is always full. It is the least nude place in Errinundera but has the highest rate of people marrying their pets, rocks, furniture, footballs, whatever - you name it. So, really, it is a true Errinundrian town. Nothing is as it should be.

You need to do more than say "I wanna host."

Actually I said less than that. I think it was something like "If no-one else is, I will" for WC3

EDIT: Just to clear things up, I'm being a pain in the arse :P

EDIT2: Though a please would've been nice, and is the reason why you get my paper-bag sharp wit :P

EDIT3: Especially since you've never been in a World Cup before. Old-timers could prolly get away with it. But since you do have a habit of incredibly inane posting, its not likely.

Sharp, as in "cheddar"?
Sharp, as in "pencil point"?
Sharp, as in "musically half-tone above natural"?
