I was wondering how I could make nice looking custom maps for my countries.
I used a program called GIMP, to make some pretty neat maps, among other things. its a free download, and user friendly.
GIMP is a great general purpose and 100% free graphics program, similar to photoshop and the like, far superior to Paint and the like.
Also Autorealm (http://www.gryc.ws/autorealm.htm) - I find it excellent for drawing jagged, realistic-looking coastlines and adding cities. You can do pretty much any kind of map you want, especially in combination with using multiple layers in GIMP.

Or you can just fire up the trusty ole MS Paint.
