I'm not totally clear on how the game works, how do wars work? Apparently the region I'm in has taken over some other regions, how does this work?
Can I trade with other countries?
How does my population grow and my nation become stronger, is there anything I can do besides answering issues to accelerate my growth?

1) In Nationstates, invasions happen when nations that belong to the World Assembly congregate in another region, and endorse their candidate over the delegate that already exists in that region.
2) You can roleplay trading with other countries, yes.
3) Your population grows with time, and your answers to the issues controls how your nation develops.

Apart from World Assembly Mechanics... the only way you can interact with other nations beyond messages on your regional message board or forums are RPs.
RPs are basically you taking on, or 'playing' the role of your nation within the NS 'world' (known as the NSVerse) Wars, trade, sporting events. Basically anything that can happen within, related to, or by your nation you can RP.
