Question about National Maps

Forgive me if this belongs somewhere else. It didn't seem like a "Technical" question so I stuck it here.
What are the rules about creating National Maps? Does my nation have to belong to one of the "Earths." Must my region be consulted? A national map is useful to have for a lot of RP. (Should I bother spending money on that frigate if I'm not sure I have a coast? etc.)
Are there any rules or customs I should know about?

Your nation does not need to be exist upon an existing landform of earth many people construct their own landmass to suit their fancy. Many regions group together to create their own continent or archepeligo.

I suggest checking with the other members of your region, to see what they think about this and whether there's interest in setting up a regional map.

The style of your map is completely up to you.
This is the current edition of my map of Kryozerkia/Farflorin (http://www.weaselhut.net/kryomap1.png).

Some people like to have a lot of detail, others like to keep it simple. The main thing you should keep in mind; can it be read? As long as its readable then the rest is secondary. You can easily design your map in Paint. I did. Sure it's not fancy but it gets the job done for all intents and purposes.
