Ok so you have to have 500 mil people? does that mean 500 million nations join yours or what? How do you grow citizens? Where exactly are the How tos? I'm a bit of a techno-tard and i have yet to be able to find a newbie how-to. Can someone please X-post a link to a general walkthrough? Is there a technical manual that i can look at with controll options and a listing of how to do stuff? From what I have read so far all I can find is how to make war and join the WA. And that's about it. I was told it was easy to play this game but it seems to have changed from what it used to be apparently.

All of us started with 5 million, and the population grows by a few million every day. Thus, it can be a rough estimate of how long the nation has been in existence (read: how long has the player been on NS).
The 500 million mark is the threshhold at which you can have a custom nation handle (The ***** of <your name>). For now, you only have a list to choose from ("Republic", "Kingdom", "Democratic Republic", "Most Serene Republic", "Queendom", "United States", etc.). Once you get past 500 million (which will take you ~3 months) you can make your own. But you don't need to have 500 million to play or post.
Oh, NS is very easy and free form to play. The in-game features are the WA and the issues, But apart from that, most of the playing and activity occurs in the forums. There are different forums, catering to different areas. NationStates and International Incidents are for in-character role-playing, in which you play as your nation, a person from your nation, or whatever ingenious to crazy idea you have as long as it's related to NationStates (NS) nations. The World Assembly forum is for drafting, debating, and discussing WA Resolutions. The Issues forum is for submitting and discussing issues which can appear in-game. General forum is where anything goes.
In each forum, the top 3-4 topics in the list are 'stickied' topics. These "Sticky" topics contain the guide/s to playing, and posting in the respective forum. It is advisable that you read them before posting. ;)

I believe you can also submit issues once you pass the 500 million mark.
