Unofficial War Simulator for NationStates

Greetings.

I was the programmer about 5 years ago that did a small programming test to do an unofficial war simulator for NationStates. (I called it nswar) Now I know Nationstates2 will have this option someday. But I want to do a text based one for this game. I will give you updates as I go along. Let me know of any ideas that you may have. When I get done, I will give out the code to anyone that is not using it for profit.

So far there will be 2 - 6 nations that may battle at a time. (3 vs 3 will be the max). All data will be store in flat files (So it will be very portable). All units will be able to be customizable by a moderator (For role play). There will be two options for the war - Text based for copy into a forum, or browser based for those who just want a war.

I will give more details later. Anyone who has php experience is welcome to help. Ideas are always welcome!

I hope to have a 0.1 beta test out by the end of November. I will keep you posted!

Has it accounted for the fact that a fair number of nations (such as mine) have a nonhuman population? If you send a human soldier with a machine gun off against a unarmed Dragon, guess who'll win! (hint: not the human)

All non-human species actually burn when exposed to battles involving man.

The saying, "furries burn in hell", comes into effect.

OOC: Nice idea. I'd offer to help test it.

Lorenya, there would probably be different categories of wars to help keep it fair, I.e Fantasy Tech, MT, PMT, FT, etc.

There will be a section for whoever is the moderator to edit different type of troop stats. Thanks for the reply. And I am not telegraphing people.

This forum will be where I post my progress. I will need a few volunteers to test out the bugs when I get the first version up. But that is at least a week away. Cheers and thanks for the comments so far!

The dragon in Hobbit was killed by an arrow.

I am first working on the engine and core... so if anyone knows html, (and i am not talking MS Frontpage), that would like to make the pages look better - let me know!

Cool. Anyone interested in helping develop this... put a nation of yours in my newly made region...it is just a joke region...but it will be a place I can get information to the others trying to help develop this.

I work LOOOONG days, so my time on will be limited to mostly nights and / or weekends sometimes. But I will keep everyone posted.

Roadmap:
This week:
Working one pulling data from NationStates and saving it into NSWar... possibly creating the whole load engine by this Saturday...we will see. Also - possibly set up a ftp server so other can help contribute to the project.

Next Week:
Saving system to creat the core battle files & saving after turns.
(First turn system...) possibly first core battle system...

After that...
Lets see how much I get done...

Howabout as well as needing military powe and all of that, you need to write a declaration of war?

i will need some people to run test on it when the first version comes out. As for how it will work: It will be a standalone war sim, or you can use it to copy and past into the forum for added role play. I will give more details later. I will need one or two skilled testers to write the manual on how to use it...(I hate writing instructions). I will do some more work on it tomorrow...I hope to have a semi-working demo by this sunday or monday.

My region? I really want people in it right now that can help develop the program... but anyone is welcome to join and help test it when it is ready.

I'll offer myself as a tester. I can help write the manual, as well as test the software. I'll be joining your region shortly.

I may work on a simplier 1 vs 1 version first to test out the war code...

The version 0.1 is not ready to play as of yet... I will keep everyone updated.

Any nation that wants to help... Check the message board on my region. It will have updates on things that need to be done and (in the next few days) a link to see the progress... I may be hosting the test version on my own home computer...so that is why I do not want to release testing versions here in the main forum thread (bandwidth limitations).

Thanks to everyone who wants to help!

Today I am programming the unit selection. Right now it will just be MT. Later it will be PMT, FT, MT or any other units selectable by a moderator and totally customizable. (In other words - you name them, and give the stats of each).

But this is version 0.1 and just for testing. You will be able to 'buy' units based on your defense budget. (how much your country spends on defense). If your country does not have a defense budget, (look up nseconomy to find this info), your defense budget will be a percentage of your national budget.

Attached is the preliminary default units. This is just a preliminary list...it will more than likely change as far as stats, costs, etc.

I also think you should be able to conscript or draft from the populace for the basic ground units at little or no cost (kind of like a militia).

Before I get questions on the weakness column...that is the attack of that unit.... for example, the air fighter has a -75% attack against ground units... so this would not be very effective to attack ground units with.

Let me know what you think.

Perhaps you are right. The first testing (1 vs 1) will be ready soon. (this is to test the battle engine and see if it works...then things will get more complicated and fun... the goal is up to 3 vs 3 in a turn style mode.

How about as well as needing military power and all of that, you need to write a declaration of war?

Good Idea! Although the whole reason of making this is to add to the fun of Nation states... which does not have a war system. Besides, you can write the declaration of war in the forums or in a telegram to the other nation.

I do not think that I will implement this... Although, I will not rule it out at this early stage.

As far ad the military power... Check out the post i made for the basic units.
