How did you choose your nation's name?

Mine was the name of a road that has special significance to me, what about your country?
Krangkor

Mine was the name of a road that has special significance to me, what about your country?

My name came from a movie that was played and commented upon by Science Fiction Mystery Theater Hour 3000. The evil space villian was from Krangkor.
Glorious Freedonia
29-09-2008, 20:28
Part of my name came from a Marx Brothers movie. I tried to have my nation named simply "Freedonia" from the Marx Bros. but alas it was taken.

i chose a random set of letters and then used them to make a name that sounded cool. ^.^

I like the Freedonia name, lol, quite original.
Brittanican Adenia
29-09-2008, 22:15
Mine was consensus by about 4 people randomly chucking British-sounding names at each other until we found one that sounded alright.
Ruccola
29-09-2008, 22:23
I named it after a vegetable, except I added an extra "c": rucola (a.k.a. rocket or arugula). :p

Coincidentally, my capital is named Arugula.

And I am proud to say that I am one of those four people.

My name just came to me. After reveling upon it, it seems to have some sort of a British sound to it and just kind of fits.
Urgench
29-09-2008, 23:00
My current obsession with central and western asian history led me to name my nation for the ruined city of old ( Konya) Urgench in Turkmenistan south of the Aral sea, once the capitol of the Khwarizmian empire and a staging point in the career in world conquering of Jenghiz Khan.
The Aaronian Empire

My first name was my inspiration. I've been using this country name on civilization III for a few years
Dalmatia Cisalpina
29-09-2008, 23:59
My nation name is a made-up Roman province.
Yannia
30-09-2008, 00:20
In English, i tend to write my first name (Jan - Dutch for John) as Yann, since that is a closer approximation of the correct prononciation.
Asteriatos
30-09-2008, 02:05
Mine was originally supposed to be Asteria but it was taken. So I just added 'tos' to the end.

Lord Tothe
30-09-2008, 05:51
I saw 'to' and 'the' without a space in between and decided that it'd be a good name. Of course, every good name requires a title of some sort, so I gave myself one. I have a suspicion that others on this forum might prefer to give me a less flattering title...
Stoklomolvi
30-09-2008, 05:56
I mixed up Vladivostok and something else to obtain Stoklomolvi. Whee!

Stok -> Vladivostok
lo -> Vladivostok
mol -> Molotov
vi -> Vladivostok

Ruccola, that's ingenious. I need a country named the "Land of Glorious Aubergines" with "Durian" as its capital.
Natzailey
30-09-2008, 07:06
I heard some idiot in my class say randomly:

"Italy is full of Nazis!!"

I thought "Nazi Italy?"

I used that name for a while on other forums, and someone misspelled it:
Natzi ataly
Natzailey was born somewhat from that after a couple of days of deliberation :)
Novanicstan
30-09-2008, 07:22
Natzailey lol. board game wasnt it and me and the other guy were tesing u bout it?

My name came from watching full metal panic and hearing Hellmajistan. the i figured add stan to just about anything and you have a name:) Novastan was taken so I aded an NIC and yep.
Stepharus
30-09-2008, 07:35
I crossed my name (stephanie) with a country (belarus), and ended up with Stepharus. I'm happy enough with it.
Blouman Empire
30-09-2008, 07:39
I got this current name from the German word Blouman (the word might be slightly different spelling but pronounced the same) which translated means flowers. Hence in English we refer to flowers as blooming

Anyway the reason I choose that was I had just got back from a holiday in Germany and I wanted for RP purposes to have something along the lines of the old German Empire and my people to have a German way of life, so I picked out this word since it had man in the end. It is also why the short name of the Empire is Bloumany
Barbie Ana
30-09-2008, 08:32
Well I really wanted my nation to have my name in it so I chucked in my name and I thought my nation should be a nation of vain little girls so I chucked in the name Barbie. Haha I love it although not very creative. XD
The Most Glorious Hack
30-09-2008, 12:51
After failing to come up with a name several times (and this was back in '03!), I just started typing random words and ended up with this.

Something of a mess, I'm afraid.

I always thought your name was because you hacked into the computers in the White House, discovered that Bill Clinton lives a secret life as a dragqueen named Maria, and then blackmailed Clinton and paid Lewinsky to fake the entire Zippergate affair as cover for you hacking the Pentagon and implanting a virus that gives you effective control over the nation's nuclear armaments.

Nah. He's the one who tricks you into giving him your identity, then uses it to purchase five million leotards in your name before selling your identity back to you at twice its worth.
Ordo Drakul
30-09-2008, 14:54
Mine comes from an order of knighthood one of my ancestors formed with backing from Otto III of the Holy Roman Empire. I'm not sure if it survived, since Vlad III was betrayed by his boyars, but it's a cool sounding name.
Omigodtheykilledkenny

My name is a not so subtle tribute to that gay stripper they kicked off "American Idol." Either that, or a subconscious expression of my secret, decades-long man-crush on Alan Greenspan. Didn't matter how the Fed voted that day, he always raised my key interest rate by 0.5%!

Or whatever.
Rejistania
30-09-2008, 19:51
Well, I liked the sounds when I first made up an imaginary nation (but it still had a Germanic ending at that time: Rejistanien) and eventually thought of a rejistanian etymology for the name (Rejis-tani-ha=the unified nation). When I read about NationStates, I tried a more English version and it was not taken, yay!
Hryvatia

Fail, unless you're Random House

After failing to come up with a name several times (and this was back in '03!), I just started typing random words and ended up with this.

Something of a mess, I'm afraid.

I always just presumed that it was lifted from the "book".

Hryvatia is a Greco-Slavic nation, basically an alternative Croatia and neighbours (http://wikistates.outwardhosting.com/w/images/7/7f/Location_of_Hryvatia.png) in its region; the Mediterranean Sea (http://www.nationstates.net//page=display_region/region=mediterranean_sea). The name "Hryvatia" itself comes from the Croatian name for their homeland; Hrvatska, crossed with Croatia itself.

"Ardchoille" is the war-cry of the clan McGregor.

Like a nation that spends about 1% on its military needs a war-cry.

Like a nation that prides itself on diplomacy and utter compliance with the law needs the clan McGregor ...
Brutland and Norden
01-10-2008, 07:28
Brutland - a name I thought I made up completely, but upon reading the FAQ (http://www.nationstates.net/page=faq#politics) again, I realized that my subconscious got it from there.
Norden - my initial vision for B&N is a Scandinavian country, so I combined the names of two Scandinavian countries. As it turns out, Norden is the Scandinavian name for the Nordic countries.
South Lorenya
01-10-2008, 07:44
I needed a bunch of names for something, so I banged a bunch of letters together. I felt that Lorenya was quite good, so (in 2003 or soemthing, wehn they had only 30 issues) I used it for this. Eventually the nation died. Early 2007 I returned to NS, and since I didn't feel like harassing a mod about nation revival, South Lorenya was born. Ever since, people have been confusing South Lorenya with South Lizasauria. Sorry about that.
Anemos Major
01-10-2008, 07:59
A long time ago, there was a GBA game called Golden Sun; in the sequel, there is a hidden level called the Anemos sanctum, and nobody knows what Anemos was so I took the name.

War cry, interesting. How is it pronounced properly?

Nice work, if memory serves me well some of your RP on your nation reminds me of a Scandinavian country, is this true or was I just making assumption?

Altacet is a name of Polish cure-gel, which I had to use on my sprained ankle when I was registering my nation. :D

War cry, interesting. How is it pronounced properly?

According to some of the learned gentry of the WA, it's pronounced something like "Arrrrr-*cough, hack!*-illy".

According so some of the less learned gentry of the WA, it's pronounced "Artichokeville".
Satanazes
01-10-2008, 13:12
My vision for my nation was an idealic caribbean island. There is a Portuguese map from the 1420's that shows two Islands, Antilia and Satanazes, in the north Atlantic. Most believe these represent islands in the Azores. Some though believe they are Islands in the West Indies indicating that Columbus was not the first European to reach the Caribbean.

I like this second explanation and chose Satanazes as my island's name because I thought it sounded cooler. Also, the name Satanazes (Devil's Island), matches well with the flag I had picked out which, in keeping with my Caribbean theme, is the flag believed to have been flown by Blackbeard the pirate.

Am i right in thinking that it means "High Church" in Scots gaelic? I think it's Irish equivalent means something like that.

Or backwards... Or more changed.
Just mix sylabs, letters, delay some and add some - spell three time - change to be more able to pronounce and you have it...

I'm told in Scots Gaelic it means "For the Old Pine!" -- they have a pine tree on their coat of arms, because the McGregors claim descent from the MacAlpins.

(This does not mean that the tendency to make dreadful puns is hereditary.)
Sjevoslavia
02-10-2008, 02:42
My main nation is Neo-Erusea, I wanted to pick Erusea which is from my favorite PS2 game, Ace Combat 04, but it was taken. I had learned around that time, about things such as the Neo-Assyrian empire and Neo-Erusea had a good ring to it...

This nation's name means "Land of the Northern Slavs" in Croatian, Sjevo is derived from Sjever which means North. Think of Yugoslavia, where Yugo was derived from Jug which means South.

This isn't the first thread to discuss this particular topic, also. =P

My current obsession with central and western asian history led me to name my nation for the ruined city of old ( Konya) Urgench in Turkmenistan south of the Aral sea, once the capitol of the Khwarizmian empire and a staging point in the career in world conquering of Jenghiz Khan.Urgench was also one of the "portage" points for the sea-going variant of the Silk Road. Most of the silk trade went by the land route, through Samarkand and so on into Persia and the Mideast. But it was possible to go by boat: from Mongolia down the Jaxartes (or "Syr Darya") river to the Aral Sea, then across the Urgench Portage to the Oxus (or "Amu Darya") river, which used to miss the Aral Sea and flow westward to the Caspian. The empty valley where the Oxus used to flow, and especially the large indentation in the east coast of the Caspian where it used to have its delta, are still visible: but the river was dammed and diverted to flood and destroy the old city of Urgench when Jenghiz Khan took his vengeance on the place for holding out against him for so long.

Once you sailed down the Oxus to the Caspian, you had to go up the Volga and across the Khazar Portage to the Don, then down the Don to the Maeotian (or "Azov") Sea, and through a narrow strait at the east end of Crimea, controlled by the Prince of Tmutarakhan.
