Help Shape A Nation

Bourgenstein

Hey guys, I don't know if this is the right forum for this, if it isn't, I do apologize.

I'm currently working on a map of my nation, well, there is one small problem with it. I can't come up with names of cities. This is where you come in. I'm looking for submissions for names of cities in Bourgenstein.

Just reply here with name suggestions. The only way that I won't accept a suggestion is if I already have it as a city (ie....Calderon City, Grandon, Kronos) or I think it's a really horrible sounding name.

Thank you very much.

Have a look through this (http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~pound/). This (http://nine.frenchboys.net/) also has a vaguely Latinate name generator.

How about "Springfield"? No one would ever think to use that name!

Since it kinda sounds German or Luxemburg-like, probably use WP and look for city names there.

When I named important cities in my nation most of it was from twisted words, I do the same with names.

Guitar = Kitar (Capital of Bis Province)

Altmer ius = Almerius (name)

Monarch = Monrak (Capital of the Monra Province)

Get in Track = Jitrack (another Capital)

Just find some words you like and twist the spelling and pronouciation, that way you get original yet realistic names. In your case find some German words.

To my mind ,the best way is to go with a naming theme - with your nation being called bourgenstein, i would say a german theme, with perhaps a little french influence (rather like the alsace-lorraine region of france). Also think of the history and geography of your towns. Where are they? What are their major industries? How, by whom and why were they originally founded?

Then go for common germanic/french place name starts and ends (prefixes and suffixes)

Common prefixes are Stahl (steel: possibly an industrial town), Moench (towns founded by monks and abbeys in medieval times) Herzog (town founded by a duke) Schloss (castle, could i ndicate a fortress or garrison town) or names of individuals such as Karl-, Wilhelm- Sigurd etc.

common suffixes are Burg (or Bourg if you want a slighly more french theme), Hafen (usually used for seaports), Stadt, See (for a town near a lake), Bruecke (for a town at a river crossing) Dorf (originally meant small town of village, but can be applied to villages that then grey to towns) Bad (a tourist resort or spa) or Stein (referrign to a town in rocky or mountainous terriory)

So a few sample place names (and the reasons behind them) could be:
Horzogsbruecke (town at a river crossign, founded by a duke)
Stahldorf (village that grew into a town through the development of industry)
Karlshafen (port founded by a man named Karl)
Schlossee (castle or fort by a lake)

this is a fun way to make place names, plus it gives the names some relevance to where the cities are (also encouraging you to put cities in strategic locations where cities really would develop!)

hope this helps!
