Try using formulas - like, for example, the following:

Make the US population equal x and your population equal y.

Given that your population is larger, divide your population by the US' (y/x).

Now, take the numbers of the US armed forces (z) and multiply them by the result of the division operation (z * [y/x]); thus, your forces will be the same proportion larger than those of the US' than your population. That should work.

Is there a good place to find a break down of what those forces do, how many fighting men, how many support etc.

2008 estimate of US population: 304,883,000
Active and Reserve military together: 2,885,213
Active military personnel 1,426,713

With the population of my nation that means 3,558,218 should be my military personnel O_o... I'm not a super power, so it is a million people less, it it somewhere in 2 million, which I think suffices, but a bit uneven for my population.

Hope that helps, too.

Rough guidelines:

Realistic: .5% to 1% of your population in the military
Cinematic: 5% of the pop in the military.
