I always thought NationStates was set in modern times, or a decade or so before it, but I've been hearing references to intergalatic empires, so I really don't know. Does anyone know the rough time?

There is no set time.

I think it goes from MT to PMT, or at least that's what has been for me so far. But at the same time, you could always pretend it was FT. I think its kinda up to you.

i think it's supposed to be up to you where you set your nation in time.
my nation exists in an alternate earth with a somewhat different history about a five hundred years from now.:)

Nations can role-play in any time period they like. Issues are written for nations in a modern time period, on an earth-analogue world.

There is several areas for RPers.

Most common is MT which stands for Modern Tech but don't be confused as to what it means, to most people it simply means a modern setting. Technology that is considered years away is often times been perfected for NS MT.

Other Eras are PMT which is Post Modern Technology where things are more advanced; imagine it being a lot like Command and Conquer Red Alert. There is FT which is Future Tech.. think of your favorite science fiction.

There are also Pre-Modern Technology and Fantasy Settings.
