Because I have too much free time on my hands (and little drive to actually finish up my weaponry projects), I've decided to take up the mantle of flagmaker, since the old one seems to be dead and gone.

[Some quick notes]
The "Nordic cross" flags are based on the Dannebrog, the flag of Denmark, in use since the early 1200s. It is used by people who have a connection to Scandinavia.

Certain vertical-banded tricolors were used after and during the Enlightenment-era rebellions against monarchies, where the flags themselves were seen as a rebellion against horizontally-banded bicolored or tricolored flags, associated with the "old style". Others have adopted this style, having no connection to the original intent behind the ninety-degree turn of the bands. Instead, the designer may have simply liked the design, or the country flying the new flag had a cultural heritage connected to another country that had or has a tricolor (see Cote d'Ivoire and the Pan-Slav movement).

The red cross on a white field is called St. George's Cross, and is used in places where St. George is the patron saint, or in places related to those places.

I do all my work in Inkscape, so that means I work in SVG initially, then export into a PNG file with 90 dpi (i.e. 1:1 translation of pixels). This will, unfortunately, make it too large for NS, so I'll also include a version that is under NS' 10 kb limit.

If I get really ambitious, I might open this up for coats of arms and national emblems. Maybe.

For this nation (http://www.nationstates.net/st_edmund) I'm currently using the flag of its former colonial master, 'Godwinnia': The flag that was adopted after independence should really have a golden dolphin (drawn, not an "imported" photo, and not too detailed...) in place of -- and a bit smaller than -- the golden dragon. Can and will you help me with this?

Sure. What's the pose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge_%28heraldry%29#Fish) of the dolphin that you want? I'm guessing naiant, but I'd like to be positive.

'embowed' (or 'naiant embowed', if that's a more proper term), please... and hopefully a bit more realistic than those in the arms of Dauphine...

I`d like a flag that`s similar to the one I have now without the purple background, and were the crosses meet, I`d like a circle, inside the circle I`d like the two headed eagle like on the Russian Imperial Flag. If you can do this that`d be really great thanks.

You've got some seriously impressive designs here. Would you be willing to do a flag for the League of Imperial Ocean-faring Nations (LION)? It should have the word LION printed on it, and a lion/lions head/ lion symbol on it, but other then that, go wild. If you need more detail, just ask. Thanks.

Could I have a golden hammer and sickle surrounded by ten five pointed stars in the center of a rich purple circle on a field of burgundy red with golden, rigid stylized wings that extend from the rim of the stars to the left and right edges of the flag?

The hammer and sickle, encircled by the ten stars, should fill about 3/4 of the purple circle. There should be a small space between the wings and the stars. And yes, the Aeroflot wings were exactly what I was thinking of, but with the traditional hammer and sickle at their center. Thanks!

This should be easy: I'd like a white sun on a black background, with three horizontal white lines (thin lines not stripes) on the bottom.

Belkaros: Your flag's ratio is (officially) 11:17, just to be different. It's kind of fudged when exported. I was going to make it e:pi for great success, but decided not to (exponential flags are kind of hard to draw :p).

How about a white flag with a Monster truck (red maybe) and a blue star in the top left corner.

I was wondering, would it be possible to create Political Party banners for my upcomming election thread? I`ll not bother posting the details until I know that you`ll be able to do it, thanks. By the way, they`re not that complicated.

The flag I have in mind is a bit on the complicated side so bear with me.... I want it to be a dark blue flag with a white circle in the center. And inside the circle there will broken cross with snake wrapped around the lower half and head pointing towards the right. I'd like to get a flag for my nation too. I don't have any idea what it should look like - it should just express the unique nature of my nation (which you should be able to guess from its name) - either literally or symbolically.

Note: PS&W is not a federation of equals - the pigs and wolves exploit the sheep unmercifully, and the sheep are not bright enough to figure it out. A flag that expressed this in some subtle way that would not be obvious to the sheep would be perfect.

It's important to note that this is a triangular flag: the bottom triangle is transparent. That'll be lost when NS converts it to JPG, unfortunately.

I was just wondering if you do banners? Because if you do I'd like to have a dark red banner with a gold cross (kinda like THIS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flag_of_England.svg) but gold). In the four corners there should be (going clockwise from top left corner) a white double headed eagle, a white lion (sort of like THIS (http://flagspot.net/images/g/gb-sc-rb.gif)), the white double headed eagle again, and lastly the white lion again. In the center should be the same ring of 18 stars that are on the flag. The dimensions of the banner should be similer to...this is a really bad example...similar to THIS (http://www.militaryantiquesmuseum.com/img/Thumb5736.jpg).

Not a bit like what I was expecting, but very distinctive. The Wolves especially like it.

Could you do a flag for Shining Ys? Basically, a walled city (like a fortress) with a single gate, circular, in the middle of the sea (with the gate at sea leve). The flag (i.e. the same flag that the flag is on) should be flying above the city in enough detail that you can make out what it is. The sky should be blue with a white cloud on either side of the city, and written over the sea below the city should be "Take This, Eat This". The flag should be split in half horizontally by the sky/sea divide, the sea should be dark blue (waves would be a nice touch, but not absolutely necessary), and the ratio should be 1:3

Also I'd like to request a simple goats head in black and white facing forwards on a sand-coloured background, 1:2

Yea...I'm back. Just wondering if you could make my political party flags...thanks ahead of time whether you make them or not.

There are four Rinvian political parties: Rinvian Constitutional Party (RCP), Rinvian People's Democratic Party (RPDP), His Majesty's Royalist Party (HMRP)*, Socialist Reformers Party of Rinvia (SRPR).

RCP - a dark blue flag single horizontal white bar through the center (thinner than a center stripe would be) and the same ring of 18 stars as on the national flag. Only these will be gold.

RPDP - A white flag with two hands holding up the letters 'RPDP'. A red strip should be diagonal from top right corner to bottom left corner. And the same ring of 18 stars (I use these a lot :) ) around the hands and letters.

HMRP - A royal blue flag with a gold strip through the center (blue-gold-blue tricolor) in the center should be the same ring of 18 stars; and the letters 'HMRP' should be in the center of the stars. On the right blue stripe should be the double headed eagle from the banner you made me and on the left blue stripe will be the lion (also from the banner you made me).

SRPR - A red flag with a gold strip running diagonal from top left corner to bottom right corner and a single white star in the center.

*Not surprisingly His Majesty's Royalist Party hold the majority of seats in the Rinvian Parliament.

Slow turnaround is slow because of job and business elsewhere.

I was wondering if you could make me two flags, one with horizontal alternating yellow and black stripes, with three white stars in the center forming a triangle.

The other would have a dark blue background with two vertical white stripes on both sides of the flag, a white star on the top half of the flag, and the letters RN in the bottom half.

The flag would be a standard St. George's cross. The top left and bottom right cantons would have a simple sun design and a simple moon design, respectively. In the center (Where the arms of the cross meet) would be a small but noticable circle (with a red outline) with the imperial coat of arms of the German Empire (1871-1918) in the circle.

I was wondering if you could make a flag roughly like the Finnish flag (a blue cross with the same off-center look), but a black, rather than white background. In the center of the cross (where the lines intersect), if you could put in an Iron cross (no swastika or anything weird like that, obviously), that would be great.

I would like a flag with a platypus in the colors teal, yellow, and navy. You could maybe use a platypus posed as it is here-

I designed the Flag, based on the old German one. Then I took a Polish coat of arms and erased the motto and the crest inside. I took a Spanish coat of arms then erased the symbols then inserted German Eagle and a clip art cross.

Even the smaller flag is to large for NS standards. Sorry to bother you again.

Also, could the text be Black where the flag is red, and red where the flag is black? A bit like a ying yang. Also, put a Vlacon with the same split colors in it, Black on the half with red, and red with Black. Thank you.

Since Lyaria is a German/Nordic nation I have included the Nordic cross, and since Sweden is my favorite Nordic nation I have used its colors. I was going for something simple yet elegant. What do you think?

I visualized the eagle being smaller, as this is going to be an NS flag as well, but basically. I also imagined it in a more epic pose, such as the american symbol, and not a realistic one like that. I really can't pass judgment on it until I see the actual flag, but pretty much.

Hey! Getting good mileage out of your flag. I was wondering if you could do some others? If you can only do one or two, these are in order of priority.


Old Clomata Empire: Black Background. Bottom center: a white sun with seven white rays pointing out (only half the sun is showing, as if it's setting or rising). The middle ray, pointing straight up, is a sword. (Standard looking sword, straight, cross hilt, nothing fancy.) The sword should be larger than the other 6 rays.
Bio-Tech Alliance:Black background again. A planet in the center, wheat sheaf symbol in the upper left corner, cog or gear symbol in the lower right, sword in the upper right, shield in the lower left. The planet should have clouds, continents and oceans but should not be Earth. Corner symbols can be colored as you think looks aesthetically pleasing, or just plain white.
Autarchy of Agnals: Looks kinda like this spaceship-and-sun (http://www.slawcio.com/foundation/sunshipc.jpg), but with changes: The ship silhouette should look more like this ship (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/clomata/ClomataPatrolShip.jpg), and there should be curved written text outside of the sun rays, at the top and bottom. The text should be abstract, alien-language symbols that look somewhat like these (http://www.omniglot.com/images/langsamples/udhr_mars.gif), but which you should try making up if you can. There should be 4 of these letters at the top, and 11 at the bottom. One or two of the ones on the bottom can be repeated. (These characters can't be lifted from actual languages because I hope to write a conlang with this as the basis! For which you will get due credit of course.)

Below follows an extensive and lengthy description of the design of the Monavian National Flag. I have gone through all of the trouble of typing up a page-long description of the objects, colors, and overall design of the flag in order to make it easier to create the design.

The field or background is white. The main device is a red shield, which is modeled after a traditional European shield from the medieval period. Upon the shield is a two-headed eagle, in this particular case a golden eagle, which should have medium-length necks.

The eagle holds an ornate sword with a long and slender blade which tapes to a point, and has a golden hilt. The pommel should be round and have a small ruby set into it. The place where the hilt meets the blade and guard should also have a round diamond set into it. The sword is held in the Dexter claws of the eagle.

In the sinister (left) claws, the eagle will be holding a scepter of gold with a large diamond set into the top. On both of the eagle’s heads should be a small gold crown with purple cloth/mantling inside. A red ribbon runs behind the two heads of the eagle, and has a bend in the middle. Over the bend is set a gold orb surmounted with a Latin cross.

The eagle also wears a blue shield with the same shape and proportions as the red one upon its chest. The shield is blazoned with a yellow budded cross in the center.

Around this main charge of the red shield and eagle, there runs a pair of olive branches in green. Underneath the olive branches is a cream colored scroll with red edges on the top and bottom. Inscribed on the scroll is the phrase “MONAVIA EST NOVA MUNDI ORDO”. The scroll should have a wide central portion and two short ones on its ends, the ends having cinnabar colored Maltese crosses on them. The words on the scroll should be a cinnabar red color.

Above the red shield with the eagle should be an elaborate golden crown, with cinnabar red mantling/cloth inside the gold bars/cage of the crown. It should be red with white diamonds in a brilliant cut pattern, and be topped by a budded cross set with amethysts. At its base is a narrow horizontal band set with miniature sapphires and emeralds. Below that is a narrow strip of ermine/stoat fur.

Finally, the flag should have a height to width proportion of 2 to 3. I would like it in two Sizes, 100 by 150 pixels, and 200 by 300 pixels. Also, I would like it to be able to be copied and pasted into a Word document so hat I may store it on a flash drive/jump drive and a desktop folder.

I didn't mean you actually had to invent a conlang. Just some chicken scratches that plausibly look like letters.And a spaceship can just be a silhouette of something with a pointy end, some wing-like things. It's not so hard. It's easy. Easy enough that I can do it, so you...

I like the first one (although the first and second bars going from top-down technically break the rule of tincture at least in Western tradition, although I don't think cendrée is found much outside Western Europe); second needs a device for the bear to be emblazoned on, rather than a rectangle (also breaks the rule of tincture, but is in keeping with the Russian flag arrangement partially, even if the official color arrangement of the Pan-Slavic movement differs so that it follows the rule of tincture—not sure why it's black and not white); third's canton is complex (mainly the continents), although it's not that big of a deal, and needs more room to "breathe" I suppose you could say, which is more important (and I recognize the use of the border, but it's really too thick and distracting; maybe a 1- or 2-px border of a lighter color would work); the bars of the Nordic cross on the fourth are disparate in width, which throws it off (not sure I like the white square in the middle either), but I like the colors there. Sorry if it feels like I'm grilling you, but you did ask what I thought. :

This look right (I switched the colors, because a blue star looked odd and the flag would have otherwise resembled the flag of Poland, which I'm not sure you want to emulate if your nation is Russian-derivative like I imagine :P and because I wasn't sure if a red star would be appropriate or not)?

Um, rampant/sejant/passant/statant/couchant/dormant is used for beasts. . .Valkyries would not fall into that category: http://dragon_azure.tripod.com/UoA/AnimalBlazonry.html Sejant also means sitting on haunches, which if applied to people would roughly translate as kneeling, and I am not drawing a woman kneeling. Just no.

As you see the image, it will have the sword on the left and the scepter on the right. This is what you wanted, correct? It's easy to get mirrored right and left confused, so I'm just making sure.

Not any problem at all for the criticism, its what I was looking for as it will help me improve my work...

Could you possibly do me the huge favor of fixing the flag with the bear on it? As the National Flag, it is quite important to me and I would prefer to have it done by someone with your skill. (The black stripe instead of white is primarily because I like the combination of the three colors)

I love the design so far, indeed this is the best I have ever seen my flag. I will definitely tell other players of your skill with flags. :hail:

While the design is excellent, as it is a work in progress, I will list five things that will improve its overall apperance. These should aid you in interpreting the description I gave to you earlier.

1. The shields should be slightly larger.
2. The maltese crosses on the scroll should appear as if they were drawn/printed on the scroll. If this requires that the scroll be left witht he ends flat when facing the bearer, that is fine.
3. The ribbon at the top shoult be lowered about a 1/4 inch.
4. The wreath of leaves could be made larger, say about a half inch in diameter, so it looks more open.
5. The scroll should be below the wreath.
6. Finally, the shields should be given a top with curves that are a bit shallower. They should also have a little more elongated shape in terms of height. The left and right sides of the shield, as they approach the top, should become more vertical.

No, you misunderstand. I don't mean resting, I mean at ease. So, if she is holding a sword, she will be standing with the sword inverted, point at her feet. Or standing with her sword sheathed, with one hand on the hilt. It is meant to convey being at peace, but ready to fight. Do you see?

Almost perfect. It could not get much better. There is, however, one wee error that needs correcting before it is completed.

The motto on the flag should read "MONAVIA EST NOVA MUNDI ORDO". The current motto says "MUNDI ORDO NOVA MONAVIA EST". The words are out of order.

Otherwise, this is the best national flag I have seen you make.

Blast, to not bother you with a request I can make by my own, I'd just like for some advice for the following flag, because I always see something that seems a bit off, or that isn't properly fit or aesthetically pleasant for one or another reason. Basically my primary doubt lie with colors. As it is it is a bit... resembling of Germany flag, although all its colors are justified. The black represents anarchism, the red socialism, and the yellow and purple are basically reminiscent of the RL Second Spanish Republic to which the Confederacy history and nature relates, while the red and yellow also are a reference to the flag of Catalonia.

I'm unsure if, to improve its aesthetic factor, I should remove the checkered red and yellow, make it flat rather than diagonally set with the black star, or simply fill the entirety of its mid section with a checkered pattern.

CTSS: Maybe if you changed it to be less weighted? Either flip one end vertically or make both sides of the checky pattern the same width, should make it look better. Side note—the purple should have moar blue to match with #9053A0 or thereabouts, looks too muted as is.

How about making it a black/red/purple tricolour, with the yellow as a vertical stripe down the centre?

Myedvedeya would like to request a replacement for our national flag.

After reading your post on how the flag goes against the rules of tincture, we have decided to change it. The new flag would be a tricolor in the style of the mexican flag, with the bars being in this order, blue, white, and red, in the style of the pan-slavic colors.

The shield:

The bears rampant used should be as similar to the bear rampant on my current flag as possible.

Above the shield is placed the crown of yarosavl oblast, without mantling.

The wrapping of the wheat is blank, unlike in the Soviet coat of arms, and the bottom portion of it, where on the Soviet arms it becomes a scroll reading "ПРОЛЕТАРИИ ВСЕХ СТРАН, СОЕДИНЯЙТЕСЬ" Should read on the Myedvedeyan "Славься Отечество Наше Свободное".

If possible, can I have 3 flags made? One is the current flag of my nation, the other two are historical.

Flag 1: Can I have the Hammer and Sickle in the centre of the image at the top, enclosed by a double line, colored gold? In the middle two stripes, 1 Black, the other White. On the white line, have a black circle in the centre, and on the black line, in the centre, please put a white circle, to add that Yin-Yang effect. The backround should be a semi bright socialist red.

Flag 2: Can I have two golden plus signs in the middle of a red circle. The red circle with the plus signs inside is located on a white backround.

1. Save it as a file, in a suitable format (PNG, GIF or JPEG) and at a suitable size.
2. On the menu at the top left of your nation's page, click 'Settings'.
3. Scroll down the page to which that link takes you, and you'll see your nation's current flag with a "Create your own flag" link under it: Click on that.
4. You'll now be confronted by a text-box, with buttons to "Browse..." at its right and to "Upload!" underneath it. Type anything in the text-box, hit "Browse...", and wander around until you reach wherever you've stored the flag: Click on its file's name, which will then appear in the text-box.
5. Click the "Upload!" button and then, when your chosen flag has replaced the previous one on that screen, scroll down the page and click the "Update Settings" button. That's it.

Sorry to be posting every day here, not that I'm an impatient person, I just need to know how long it will take, its critical for planes that I have set up... any response on the nature of when and if the flag can be made, would be extremely appreciated.

Those pictures are usually meant for nation flags on NationStates, although there may be some people who use them on NationStates 2 as alliance, continent, or, if they're ambassadors, nation flags.

Sorry, I'm not the owner of the shop. I only made that flag for Olspher because he/she seemed to be in a hurry, and the flag seemed simple enough.
