Corrupt Dictatorship

The Pan African Union

I am wondering why my nation continues to be listed as a "Corrupt Dictatorship". It has been so labeled from the moment I created it. But none of my decisions has been that of a Corrupt Dictatorship. I have granted great freedoms to my citizens, cut military spending, increased social welfare programs and education, and relieved the tax burden for the poor.

Perhaps I am a Corrupt Dictatorship simply because my nation is an African nation.

Cultural bias in Nation States? :(

Ok, since posting this my nation's status has been changed to "Psychotic Dictatorship", which is even worse. It says that my population is ruled by a "psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings." Codswallop. I've been an excellent leader, and I've granted my people great freedoms.

This is very irritating.

That's why every nation in the region Africa (http://www.nationstates.net/page=display_region/region=africa) is either a Corrupt or Psychotic Dictatorship. It couldn't possibly be that the categories are decided on the three freedom levels at the top of your page. Nope. We're all a bunch of racists.

To clarify a little upon my esteemed colleague's post; your nation started as a Corrupt Dictatorship because of the choices you made in the multiple-choice section when you founded it. The classification will, as you've discovered, change depending upon how you answer issues. Issues can have unexpected effects, and you don't always get the issues you want.

It also sounds like you're increasing your civil rights but not necessarily your political rights. The former is Johnny Q. Public's ability to do stuff without getting arrested. The latter is his ability to participate in government. You can have a freewheeling, the-devil-may-care-but-I-do-not approach to your citizens and simultaneously keep a jealous hand upon the reins of power.

Hey, now the Dictatorship is Psychotic! Change is in the air, folks.

Try letting people vote, or putting less restrictions on their civil rights. Killing your economy won't change your freedoms.

I do allow my people to vote, and despite the absolutely ridiculous economic issues that I've had to deal with, I have made consistently good decisions.

You know, I actually assumed this would be an intelligent nation-state sim when I joined, but I was wrong. The issues are immature and have an massive left-wing, anti-religious bias. And you can't get an intelligent response from the people running these forums.

So :upyours: Nation States. Think I'll find a better sim.

Not one for reading, huh? Or familiar with the concept of parody...

Isn't this "simulation" biased towards your politics?

Very possibly. Not intentionally, though. And since there's no ultimate measure of success or failure in NationStates, any bias shouldn't affect much. For example, you don't win the game by having the strongest economy. It just means your nation has a strong economy.

Why is my nation so weird?

Everything is exaggerated a little. Well, okay, a lot. Your decisions affect your nation very strongly, so your country might seem like a more extreme version of what you were aiming for. Unless you have radical politics. In which case you probably think nothing's wrong.

My decision had unintended consequences!

Yep, that'll happen. For one thing, see "Why is my nation so weird?" above. For another, pretty much every decision you make will involve a trade-off of some kind. It's kind of an exercise in choosing the best of a bunch of bad options. You might find this frustrating, especially if you're the kind of person who thinks the solutions to all the world's problems are obvious.

Christ, somebody wokeup on the wrong side :P

It fun and games, it's on the Forums that really defines what your nation is Simulation wise.

So :upyours: Nation States. Think I'll find a better sim.OK, CALM DOWN, Pan Africa. The reason your nation keeps registering lower freedoms is precisely this:

* 9 hours ago: Following new legislation in The Pan African Union, the government awards prizes to television shows featuring stereotype-breaking minority roles.
* 15 hours ago: The Pan African Union was reclassified from "Corrupt Dictatorship" to "Psychotic Dictatorship".
* 15 hours ago: Following new legislation in The Pan African Union, euthanasia is illegal.
* 21 hours ago: Following new legislation in The Pan African Union, punitive tariffs protect local industry.
* 1 day ago: Following new legislation in The Pan African Union, high-income earners pay a 100% tax rate.
* 2 days ago: Following new legislation in The Pan African Union, a well-funded social safety net protects the unfortunate.
* 2 days ago: Following new legislation in The Pan African Union, nudity is frowned upon. All of these decisions dealt blows to your economic, personal and political freedoms stats. Young nations are always left-wing democracies one week and crackpot theocracies the next, because issues have a much more extreme effect on their stats. Keep answering issues in a "centrist" manner, and you'll likely see your national profile moderate considerably. But if stats are the reason you play, I wouldn't join the UN, as UN resolutions often have catastrophic effects on newer nations.
