where did the threads go? are they periodically deleted? I saw one disapear and reapear. What's going on? I is so confused!

Jokes aside, don't worry. Maybe you saw a thread while a mod was in the process of doing some Mysterious Modly Thing to it. Threads do fade off the menus after a while, but you can still call them up via the Search function.
If you want to keep in contact with a thread, use the Subscribed Threads function on your User CP.
