Nation Inspirations?

Kostemetsia
10-01-2008, 09:04
I'd like to know where you guys got your inspirations for your nations. This is stuff not covered in the factbook. What tech level? What era? What national basis?

----------------------------------------
Kostemetsia is based on the real-world Commonwealth of Nations, except that instead of Nations, Kostemetsia is more of a Commonwealth of States. Each of the six orbiting bodies in the Unified Republic is a state of its own.

The segments of the military mainly use anglicised Belgian ranks. The Air Force and Army use these ranks.

The Maritime Guard ranks are derived from those of Poland. The Star Navy uses Royal British Navy ranks, and the Marine Corps uses United States Marine Corps ranks.

Pretty much everything is a weird mix of British, American, and the non-English-speaking parts of Europe.

My nation is sort of an unusual mix. It's really more like a steam punk more so than a modern tech. It still uses the old wooden ships for transportation around the ocean, most don't have electricity. But some modern appliances have snuck into my country. It's a bit of Japan, Europe, fictious Japan a few Anime series and their characters.
Vontanas
11-01-2008, 02:47
Vantanas is a mixture of Ancient Greece's and some Roman culture, with modern Anglo-American flavorings, a Vantanian republic government, a Japanese-esque economy, and an Anglo-American military.
Vojvodina-Nihon
11-01-2008, 03:01
Vojvodina is a province of Serbia, and Nihon is a name for Japan. Put them together and they're absolutely meaningless. So is this nation.
The Vuhifellian States

A it's mostly original in history and culture.

For everything else I took from Halo, Combat Instinct, Ace Combat, and various animes.

All my nations start out where the bed-time stories my mother told me started out: her memories of an Australian country town in the 1930s. But the minute they get onto any sort of world stage they start to develop quirks.

My ultimate aim is to make them sort of like what the waste-paper basket contents would be if Terry Pratchett, Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Katherine Kurtz, Ursula Le Guin and JRR Tolkien tried, while somewhat fuzzled and distracted by aimless and half-hearted sexual advances from the Monty Python team, to write a group letter of complaint about the Vatican footpaths to an Anglican diocesan council.

It's basically just the song "American Idiot" by Green Day, with all the "Americans" taken out and replaced with "Kennyites," and minus all the "don'ts" (because if there's anything Kennyites can't stand, it's negativity), some fanatical metrosexual Catholic natives who misread every passage in the Koran and mistook it for the Bible thrown in, then some stripper commandos to make the natives so horny they forget all about their divine mission to "Go ye therefore and kill all nations," and a bi-curious secretary of state for that minty taste.

There was also a fair amount of alcohol involved, if I remember correctly ... which I don't. Probably because of the fair amount of alcohol involved. But I can't be sure.
The American Privateer
11-01-2008, 07:37
The American Privateer started off as just that, a group of Privateers, with a Letter of Marque and everything, that had been stranded in a strange universe following a mishap with an FTL unit. As such, they are primarily Conservative and Libertarian Americans, though we are now going out and trying to recruit Kel Dorans, Sangheili, Twi'leks, Dwarves, Elves, Huragoks, Andorians, etc.

As for NOVA Corp. Go watch Swordfish, I liked the idea of an Ultranationalist Group that operated both For and Against the nation depending on whether or not The American Privateer is at war.
Imota
11-01-2008, 08:16
The Holy Empire of Imota is intended to be a fusion of the community spirit of socialism and the work ethic of capitalism. Everyone is expected to be productive in some way, and help is available for those who have fallen on hard times. Technologically, Imota is a modern nation, with running water, electricity, sanitary sewage, regular garbage collection and mail service, and internet access available inexpensively to most of the population.

The military forces are a mishmash of variations on former Soviet tanks and planes, American surface ships, and uniforms based on American and Japanese designs from World War Two. The rank structure is based on the modern Japanese system and has unique names for each rank and a differentiation between the rank and title of "Captain", but the names themselves are based on those for the modern US forces. An exception is the Air Force, which takes its rank names from both the US Air Force and the British Royal Air Force.
Brutland and Norden

Brutland and Norden is a Roman-influenced [more of like, Italian] present-day Nordic country whose policies largely reflect my political beliefs.
Bazalonia
11-01-2008, 09:55
I have alot of inspirations for my nation and various puppets...

Bazalonia - Fairly Australian, though more city-based Australia
The Garbage Men - Was the result of hearing "The Garbage Man Can" from the simpsons
Atheistic Right - No reall attributation except I wanted a terrorist like nation
The Mice of Miceland - Just attribute this one to me being crazy
Aquantantis - Communist Mermaids... I dunno where that one came from
Nova Bazalonia - Dinotopia... in spaaaaaaaaacceee
Shielas and Bruces - outback Australia given the Python touch
Nong Nang Ning - Inspired by Spike Miligan's classic poem "On the Ning Nang Nong"
Free United States
11-01-2008, 10:20
well, i got in a debate about how the Soviet Union would have worked if it had truly been socialist...and that's basically my country's political structure. military is basically taken from Ace Combat, US, Macross, Gundam SEED, etc. internally, very much old Soviet Union, ie. GRU, SVR, KGB,FSB etc. actual cities come from various animes and from Ace Combat (yes, i know 'again'). the people are homogenous, but there's also a lot of diversity. tech is usually MT, but some near-FT exists (Macross/Gundam). i really like to use gauss guns and linear cannons/catapults* etc.

*linear catapults are real. the USN is developing the EMALS (Electro-Magnetic Aircraft Launch System) for the next class of carriers; first of which is the USS Gerald R. Ford.

Third Spanish States

-----------------------------

I forgot my alts, and no, I won't use images for them in respect of 52k users

Solar Communes: I guess it doesn't draw much from any already existing sci-fi as it is basically the FT version of Third Spanish States, though it share some elements with Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, as it is a mostly hard sci-fi Solar Civilization in its early colonization struggles. Decentralized Direct Democracy workable thanks to a Non-hive Group Mind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_mind_%28science_fiction%29#List_of_non-hive_group_minds) done through Brain-Computer Interfaces almost everybody has installed in their brains(They are not borgs!) as nobody is forced to implant them, Communism + Mutualism economics like Third Spanish States, cities floating high above a Venus-like planet, gene therapy to make genetically adapted humans to different gravities from 0 to 3g, relativistic C-ships (http://www.fourmilab.ch/cship/craft.html), no "WW2 in Space", no sound in space, GRASERS (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6991030.stm) instead of LASERS.

Prazinia: Russian Tribulation Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribulation_Force) esque democratic nation with a different view on whether the Revelation is inevitable or not and with a somewhat aggressive foreign policy. They believe the United Nations are the bringers of the Antichrist and that all dictatorships and most "democracies" are ruled by the hands of Satan...

Northern Rangeria
12-01-2008, 15:31
Well, I started Northern Rangeria as a mirror-state of my homeland (Finland), but I mixed that up with some elements that bad American movies always have about small, non-existant European kingdoms: namely the fact that I went for a Principality and not a Republic, plus a touch of the Balkans in the form of a recently-independent state with a powerful and hostile neighbour. Wherever possible, I use Finnish military ranks, and all names are "internationalized" versions of Finnish names.

Curious fact: Finland was supposed to become a kingdom when it gained its independence in 1917. The Finnish government had already invited a German prince to come and be their king - but those plan were sacked when Germany got its posterior handed to it in the First World War.

Greater Rangeria - the former colonial master - is a mixture of Czarist Russia, Soviet Union and overall despotism.
Komekong
12-01-2008, 16:23
Komekong
Well, I just wanted to make some nice asian country, in some kind of North-Korean style. So I took the name Komekong, I came up with it because I first used the Hong Kong flag. The nation itself feels a little like som overreligous military state, minus the religion.

Future-World
Well, I firstly wanted to make this nation when I listened to Helloweens "Future World" because that song would be perfect for a national anthem.

Futur-World could be called the result if you take metal-fans and capitalists and then make them hate each other, and finally put them on a island where they can build a civilisation. Then you add a french native population, the punishment of execution for all that's listening to softer music then AC/DC, an enemy military organisation known as the "Russian Fez Army" occupying the northwest land and replacing the handshaking with doing this: :upyours:

Shortly, a wonderful place.

The Ministry of Shadow
12-01-2008, 18:23
Mine came from my imagination, and originally started out as a way to simply organise my thoughts. After I left I came to the realisation that there are parts of my book that are still unclear, and have returned to hammer out various parts of my literary creation, thus its all based on my own creation, which is in and of itself inspired by ancient mythologies, Sci-fi, and modren day authors of various genres, including the entire teams of people it takes to make some video games ( like Final Fantasy). I took the parts I really liked, and distilled it into Warhaven.
Cobdenia
12-01-2008, 18:31
Cobdenia has evolved quite a bit.

Currently it is basically 1930's Rajist India, but slightly more democratic, bits of steam punk, and a very confusing existance - it exist in a time warp to the Modern (and modern RL) World, as well as existing in the 30's. Thus a Cobdenian newspaper would have articles on Hitler's appointment as chancellor, the 2008 American election, and Kenny's latest ill thought out drunken invasion.

Originally, it's was based on 1950's Australia. For some reason...
Snefaldia
13-01-2008, 05:09
I was walking in the winter last year and there were some very interesting snowdrifts with little bits of grass poking out, and I thought to myself "I wonder what a place where everyone lived under the ice would be like" and Snefaldia was born.

It changed rapidly from a frozen society of hunters to a theocrat-republic stuck in the mountains. As I read more books and studied more, I added little elements I found interesting in anthropology and the soft sciences and we are where we are.
Rykarian Territories
13-01-2008, 06:03
My idea for a nation stems from my fascination with world war 2 german technology, and fascism. (I'm quite evil, yes indeed )

My nation is more of a Post modern fascist dictatorship, a military superpower, i mainly based my military forces off semi-futuristic tech in development and in the prototype stages of today, and i use alot of equipment from the German military, it's all good. :P
Jufonce
13-01-2008, 08:51
Jufonce is almost a utopia run by a King/Queen, a King at the moment. Jufonce are against any type of pollution. They have banned everything-gas-operated. They usually ride around the streets on bikes or by horse and buggy. It's based around today, so all the bad is around them, but it is like heaven on Earth compared to any country. Since they are anti-pollution they are the world's most cleanest community.
They believe that everyone should live happy and free. They throw massive parties at certain times called Peace Day, they host free concerts on those days, just because they are big with music, mainly rock. Smoking is banned, but marijuana along with beer, which is legal anywhere throughout the country, except for most schools and stores/restaurants, they usually require it to be bought from them. Their only problem is they have a huge problem with crime. Which is why they are at war right now.
Philimbesi
17-01-2008, 17:03
Philimbesi is based on America mostly but with the house and senate combined in to one legislative body, and the military combined into one "Armed Forces"

The characters in the government are based pretty much on the characters on the TV show The West Wing.
Mexar
17-01-2008, 17:52
Mexar is a 3rd-world dictatorship. It would fit in with the "banana republics" of South & Central America. It also wouldn't be out of place in the Middle East, as it has oil and Muslims, some of whom are hardcore enough to get bad press. But it's not all bad. The current President/General is regarded as benevolent, and could probably win in an honest election, and though the people are poor by first-world standards, they are better off than most 3rd-world nations.

My nation is union of very many small communes wich have they
own laws. They heave representants to local councils wich send their representants to parliment.First Secretary of Great Council was elected for 5 years.I's crossover between XVII century Poland (without king and Liberum Veto and with election laws for everyone.), parlamentary system and socialism.
It's result of thinking about economy, democracy and place of nation in country.
In technology my country is PreModernTech nation wich was closed from tehnology in recent years (something around 70's of XX century) wich now contacts with PostModernTech technology (something around 20's of XXI century).Small technological shock. They have mix of high technology with old style.

In Poland we have politician Janusz Korwin-Mikke.
My idea is simply BE OPPOSED TO EVERYTHING WHAT HE SAY!! Because he's ideads is idiotic, senseless and extreme...

Depoe Bay, Oregon claims to be the world's smallest harbor. I thought it was fitting for a new nation.

Politically, the nation will follow my gut reaction to daily issues.

Economically, I will try to find a balance between capitalism and humanism (if such a thing exists!).

Militarily, I admire South Africa and Sweden, so I expect I will have similar concepts.

Westby and-or Eastby
19-01-2008, 10:58
I was inspired by the default choices for official form of government. In amongst "Republic", "Kingdom" and so on was "Disputed Territories". How, I wondered, could a country officially describe itself as "disputed"? In a flash, I saw the answer, and Westby and/or Eastby was, or were, born.

Westby and Eastby are remote mountain valleys. Think of them as Swiss cantons before the confederation was fully worked out--except that in their case it never will be, as the people have gotten used to the ambiguity of not knowing whether they have one state or two. By now they're proud of it. Foreign relations are handled by representatives from one town or the other, or from both, as chance may have it. Neither town can be sure that the other will abide by laws or treaties the first one has made; there are enough cases of defiance to maintain the proud distinction of "Disputed" in the country's (or countries') name.
Dostanuot Loj
19-01-2008, 11:46
Dostanuot Loj was a failed experiment I gave up on. I've since been playing as Sumer, with this account because Sumer, and many variations of it, are unaccessable to sign up as "reserved" nations.

As for Sumer, in terms of RP.
Think what might be had Lugalzagesi whooped Sargon's butt hard, and instead of the Akkadians taking over the area, the Sumerians did, and then went and took over other stuff. And then add a Roman-style Republic developing in place of the kingship afterwards, some wars and isolation, and let the fun ensue.

Godwinnia
19-01-2008, 14:19
I'd been reading quite a bit of Dark Age & Early Medieval history shortly before I joined NS, and writing 'alternative history' material (as a possible RPG setting) based on events in & around England during those periods...

Godwinnia (http:www.nationstates.net/godwinnia) was the first nation that I created here, and its origin story involves a migration of Anglo-Saxon refugees, a few years after the Battle of Hastings, to a group of islands that are situated in the Atlantic Ocean (on one of the many differing 'Earths' that are around...) a couple of hundred miles to the west of Ireland. It remained fairly isolated for several centuries, but came under increasing English influence from the 16th century [AD] onwards. Nowadays it's about as davanced as the best of the other 'Modern Tech' countries on its original world (none of which are actually NS nations), although with a few quirks such as still having airships, and controls territories that spread across a number of other (previously-uninhabited) Earths -- thus providing space for its billions of people -- too. Its government is similar to the modern (but pre-Blair) British one in structure, but with the King retaining more power over the executive, and its terminology tends to use words of 'Old English' origin rather than ones that modern [RL] English aquired from French or Latin e.g. a minister (in the government) is a 'FirstThane'.

St Edmund (http://www.nationstates.net/st_edmund) was the second nation that I created here. It was intended for use as a 'UN puppet' by Godwinnia, so I made it a former colony of that nation. Given the location of Godwinnia, and historical patterns, the obvious location for it was in the Caribbean, and as many of the islands there are named after various saints [in RL] I decided that naming it after one of the Anglo-Saxons' most important saints made sense. It's culturally similar to Godwinnia of course, but with a population of much more mixed origins and with some typically 'Caribbean' features (e.g. 'Carnival', calypso singing, steel bands... and voodoo...) added.

wouldbe, couldbe, shouldbe, alternative present, alternative everything else.

all those after the fall stories of a positive nature, le guine's always coming home, paxon's westfalia, to a lesser degree some of the less well known, my own inspiration really, intigrating all of them, some of lafferty's short stories too.

indiginous outreaches to the dominant culture.
the kind of "ecotopian" considerations i see sentience on earth requiring.

NOT anything that i'm awaire of about existing earth nations.

my dream/memories of my previous lives on other worlds.

'tec level', near, but VERY alternative 'future', that could even, with a few accidents of ('ancient') history having gone VERY plausable other ways, be simply an alternative present.

also the dreams i have when i sleep now, take place in such a parallel world/universe.

Terror Incognitia
20-01-2008, 12:31
Incognitia comes in four main flavours:

In medieval and earlier times, it is very much akin to Anglo-Saxon England, with thanes, shires and hundreds, and etc.
Over the following few centuries, the Witan-equivalent, called the Consilium, gains a wider membership, ever more of which is elected. Not least as a result of this, the aristocracy withers in importance and is largely replaced by great trading magnates.
By the 1500's Incognitia is somewhat akin to the Dutch Republic, if a little less fractious.
After industrialisation and mostly 'soft' empire (trading influence and quiet agreements with local governments as opposed to holding colonial territory) Incognitia enters Modern Times as a mature, stable democracy, with a broad-based economy capable of everything from vast steel production to advanced financial services.
Early space exploration is conducted, culminating in the despatch of one great slow 'generation-ship' in the 2100's. Once they've arrived, my focus shifts to the colonists in their new system, imaginatively named Incognitia.
The FT nation is, for the notional 'present' time, a single heavily populated system; competent in FTL and ship-building, but excelling in the biological sciences, with the peak of the biological success being the 'Uplift' of dolphins descended from those taken with the original colonists to human levels of sentience and intelligence. My FT nation thus consists of two intelligent species, and Incognitia in many ways judges the nations she makes contact with by their reaction to the 'fins.
(Respects must be paid to David Brin, from whom I blatantly stole the idea of Uplift.)
Neo Kirisubo
20-01-2008, 12:43
the main version of Neo Kirisubo is a FT 'Federation of Planets' type of goverment who mainly explore the galaxy peacefully. They also value the old ways of Bushido and are my UN nation.

They are an off shoot of the Kirisuban Empire I used to run here until I had techinical problems and I couldn't post in jolt.

I might create the old empire again which was MT and based on a modern Japan with the Samurai class and fully gender equality.

It was also a past tech version based round the full feudal Japan and Terror and myself were allies.
Terror Incognitia
20-01-2008, 12:52
Yah, Kiri, we should RP something again some time. I miss the old Incognitia, I've not used it in a while.
Neo Kirisubo
20-01-2008, 12:56
Yeah we should meet up somewhere in the depths of space in the meantime although :)

Their story picks up from the disaster that wiped New Kirisubo of the galactic map and the exodus to the star system in the Federal Union which became their new home.

They've since resumed peaceful exploration trying to pick up from where they left off but this time crews are all female and only 10% of the population is male.

All men must remain on the twin homeworlds and all women must have at least one child so the population can be rebuilt. Family units are usually built round two women and their adopted children but sometimes the partner is a man.

This is also the main reason why there are very few Starfleet officers serving on ships over the age of 30. They can remain in the service but are no longer part of the exploration fleet.

20-01-2008, 13:24
:sniper::headbang:

Kolanderaz is loosely based on the romans or Alexander i.e. "beating the crap out of everyone else" when the time comes of course.
It was founded by English settlers, who were subsequently killed within minutes of arriving, nonetheless it was put on the map.
A notoriously confused state it has been known to start a war,be attacked, then complain to the UN about the country.
Fortuately for everyone else (for a while,of course) the king is only 3 at the moment but does not want to have his country ruled by "helpers".
