Spam bots
Joined up about an hour ago and allready got two 'join my region' spams.
I expect to have about 50 of these spams by tomorow.
Does this happen to all the new players or did I just join at a bad time?

Nah... it happens to everyone. Expect it to stop after about a week or so.

It happens to all new players, while they're in the feeder regions. (Feeder regions are where all new nations are created. Read about them here (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Feeder_region).
Recruiters are allowed to TG new members in the feeders only. Elsewhere, it's illegal.
To avoid it, move to a new region. Check 'em out first, though. Follow the links on the page or the recruiters' instructions to see what other regions look like.
Or stay where you are, live with it for a while (it dies off) and become an active member of the region you've been created in. To do that, check up the top of your regional message board (RMB) -- you get to that by clicking "Location" on your nation page. If they have a forum, it'll be listed near the top of the page. Copy and paste the address.

Don't worry about that, it's technically impossible, the telegram box only holds 15 messages.

Also, it's the worst right after your nation is created. You might get 5-10 telegrams the first day, but not nearly as many after that. Though you can still get occasional TGs even after a long time, if you stay in the feeders.

Also, just to point out a technicality: those aren't being sent by bots. Such things are banned by the rules and are hunted down ruthlessly. They're just people with a lot of dedication and free time.
Yeah, I remember being sent a 41 line telegram after 11 minutes of being founded!
How do they do it? Some of them seriously need to get a life...

Most likely, they have a recruitment message typed in advance that they just copy and paste.

Generally you know it it isn't a personalised message when you get the waiting message after posting telegrams. The feeders like people more (or at least the Lazarus UN Delegate does) when you telegram nations spam instead of spamming the message board. My Spam Anti Spam Message (which is obviously Spam in itself):
The SPAM ANTI-SPAM MESSAGE:
I don't know how you in Feeder Region Name survive all the SPAM???
These people obviously don't take the time to personalise their messages like do sadly. I used to SPAM like that myself though, lol.
Maybe NS has to develop a sort of SPAM reform club, we have alcohol reform clubs - Why not SPAM reform clubs?

Restrict region recruiting to forums only! :mp5: Now what would those have-a-lot-of-time NS players do......:)
Anyways......I ignored them when I first joined since I didn't know what the....hmm...anything about NationStates at that time. I didn't even know how to check my inbox then :p
I'm against that actually because otherwise the forum would just be filled with a load of Crap and it wouldn't really be a forum.

Recruiting spam is unfortunately for some a fact of the game.
It is the only way player created regions have to get their region "in your face" so to speak other than a regional ad here on jolt, which in my opinion does nothing.
My advice is to not consider it spam but to consider it a chance to take a look and see what each region that tg's you has to offer.
Nothing more,nothing less.
Recruitment TGs don't bother me. When I was a young squirt (in NS), I didn't really know what to do, so I just followed the most interesting looking TG. I enjoyed being in that region for nearly a year, and my experiences there led me to my current region, which I also enjoy.

The same happened to me;), but the next region I went to I found an ad for on Jolt :)

Of course, if you joined because a friend told you about NationStates and they're in another region, you might be able to get into there. That's how I got into my region. It's small, but comfortable.

No;), I found it by random searching on the Internet, I talked in a political discussion site before NS. I must have put in Nation or State and found it with google search.:)

Still though, there are some of us that heard by word of mouth. And you must have gotten really lucky, I joined when I first arrived, but forgot to bookmark the site. Because of that, I tried using Google, Altavista, Dogpile, I even used Windows Live search and got NO hits for the site. I finally ended up asking Dothimir (the friend who told me about NS) for the site again.
I can remember loving to get telegrams sent to me. Please don't ask me why!
